The top prospect seems certain he will be selected with the first overall pick in the NBA Draft.
Transcript
00:00A.J. DeBonsa was at Game 4 wearing a suit again
00:06and kind of telling anybody that would listen about the Wizards
00:12and what he thinks is going to happen and if he likes Washington.
00:17So let's let A.J. DeBonsa, the BYU forward, 6'9", scorer,
00:23I believe led the country in scoring,
00:27an absolute baller, a very real prospect to go number one overall to Washington.
00:32Let's let A.J. DeBonsa talk here.
00:35Dallas and Atlanta went back-to-back. I knew I was going D.C.
00:38So we're taking the bus.
00:39I knew it, bro.
00:41Dallas was 8.
00:43My mom next up, Dallas, 8.
00:44I'm like, oh, I'm at Atlanta 7.
00:48Atlanta 7. I said, I'm going D.C.
00:50John Wall looked at me, bro.
00:51John Wall looked at me. I was trying not to laugh.
00:53I said, it's quiet, but I'm going D.C.
00:55Oh, you know how many people on Twitter was calling Wizards?
01:01I mean, they had highest odds, though.
01:04He went on to say of Washington,
01:07I don't know how much the young man, how much time he has spent here,
01:11but he went on to say, I know that's a basketball town.
01:14It's a sleeping volcano.
01:15Maybe he's a dormant volcano of a basketball town
01:18and how he can't wait to get here.
01:21He is certainly operating in a fashion that suggests he believes
01:28he's going number one to Washington.
01:30Mm-hmm.
01:32Do you care?
01:34I don't care about what I've talked before.
01:36When it happens, it happens.
01:37If it doesn't happen, then he got some egg to eat.
01:45I wonder, and I don't know, but we had Chris Miles on yesterday.
01:51He has assumed that he's going number one no matter what
01:54because he said, I knew I was going to Washington
01:56because he figured Washington was going to get the number one pick.
01:58He is not acting like somebody told him anything.
02:01You get what I'm saying?
02:02Yeah.
02:04I find it interesting that he seems so confident.
02:09Meanwhile, Chris Miles was on with us yesterday
02:12and said in certain terms that he knows the Wizards
02:19are at least checking out Darren Peterson, the Kansas guard.
02:24And I think with Peterson, there is some thought
02:31he might be the highest ceiling guy of everybody.
02:35I don't know this.
02:36Have we heard or seen Peterson at all?
02:41I mean, I think he did one interview on ESPN
02:43and that was really it.
02:44Like the day of the lottery?
02:47I feel like we haven't seen him at all.
02:49Yeah, he's kind of just been quiet.
02:50Yeah.
02:53Maybe that's just kind of his style.
02:55I don't know.
02:56It may be.
02:57But I find it interesting the difference in approach.
03:02I'm not sure.
03:04I don't think there's a right or a wrong approach, right?
03:08But I'll be who you are.
03:10Totally.
03:10And if DeBansa is kind of an out there guy,
03:14like out and about talking, discussing that he wants to go one,
03:20whatever it is, that's cool.
03:25I just, I wonder if, I don't know.
03:29I'll open the phone lines on this.
03:31800-636-1067.
03:33800-636-1067.
03:38Is it off-putting at all?
03:41Huh?
03:42Is it off-putting at all?
03:43What do you mean?
03:44That DeBansa is just like openly talking about,
03:47I knew John Wall looked at me like, I'm going to DC.
03:49I can't wait.
03:51But I don't think it is, but I'm just curious.
03:53I don't know what it is.
03:55I think this is all in his mind of what he thinks.
03:59And he was, he's talking like, well, okay, I knew who had eight,
04:05who had seven.
04:06And he knew the Wizards was going to get it.
04:08And he'd say, John, look at him.
04:10You remember when John talked to us?
04:13John didn't know until they called who was two.
04:18So when he looked at him at six or seven,
04:20John was just nervous as hell because he didn't know where the pick was coming.
04:25Agreed.
04:27It's interesting.
04:28I love, if you're drafting somebody number one overall,
04:31I want them to be confident, right?
04:33Like I want that level of confidence.
04:36I just, I find it interesting that this dude feels so confident
04:43that it's what's going to happen.
04:44You know what I mean?
04:45Have you heard much from him prior to the draft stuff?
04:49Throughout the year, did you hear anything from him?
04:52Now that you say, I don't know that I did.
04:56I mean, I saw him play enough.
04:58He's currently.
04:58Has someone told him you have to start being more outgoing and stuff like that?
05:02That's kind of what I want.
05:03Sounds like a PR person to me, right?
05:05It kind of does.
05:06Hey, you wear the suits.
05:08And nobody's going to wear it.
05:09It's going to make you look different.
05:11Nope.
05:12Nobody cares.
05:13Just play.
05:13If you can't play.
05:15Like, I wonder if there is an effort to, I don't, I'm looking at his social media right
05:25now.
05:26And he, I mean, he's got almost a million followers and I don't know.
05:33He seems like he's active on social media, but there's no wrong answer, right?
05:41Was he, white bride, nobody watches more college hoops than you.
05:44Was he like this outgoing, confident guy?
05:47Yeah.
05:48So his recruiting story was pretty widely covered and he ended up going on first take to announce
05:52he was going to BYU.
05:53It was like a big deal.
05:54It wasn't LeBron decision level, but in terms of college basketball prospect type, that was
05:59kind of the deal.
06:00So not scared of the limelight.
06:02Yes.
06:03Okay.
06:04Nick is in Leesburg.
06:07Nick, what'd you make of AJ DeBonce a game for?
06:11Hey, what's up guys?
06:12Um, I think AJ DeBonce is honestly just, he's confident he's going number one, whether it's
06:17the Wizards or I think if the Wizards think Darren Peterson is their guy, they should trade
06:22back to two.
06:23And I think he understands he could go number one either way.
06:28And I think his confidence really shows that.
06:32Is he, did he say anything about Utah?
06:36Like, was he asked about Utah?
06:37Was there any of that conversation?
06:39Like, cause not that I saw.
06:40No, I guess here's what I think.
06:42Yeah, go ahead.
06:43I think he knows in his mind, he's the best player in the draft.
06:47And I think he, from what he, I've seen from him throughout his whole career, his confidence
06:55is he thinks the Wizards should take him number one.
07:00That's what I get.
07:01I think he wants to go number one.
07:02It's cool to think that way, but he doesn't know.
07:04Right.
07:05I also wonder, the tone to me has shifted from.
07:12He's a guarantee to, it could be somebody else.
07:15No, maybe that.
07:17But the tone to me has also shifted, I'd say.
07:21Remember the night, the day of the lottery, he was there.
07:23And did the, I think Chase Hughes talked to him.
07:26Like, he did some media that day.
07:29And it seemed kind of muted at the time about Washington winning the lottery.
07:34Like, his excitement didn't seem what it was last night.
07:37Because maybe he thought he was going to Utah, or Utah got two.
07:40I don't know.
07:40But like, when was the lottery?
07:42About a month ago?
07:43Yeah, about a few weeks ago.
07:45I think, like, the most exciting part about this is that this is now a couple different players in the
07:51last few drafts that are excited to come here.
07:53Alex Saar forced his way here.
07:56Last year, Ace Bailey tried to force his way to Washington.
07:59I'm not saying DeMonts is going to force his way.
08:01The Wizards have the number one overall pick.
08:03But he sure seems excited to come here.
08:05Trey Young forced his way here.
08:07Wanted to be a Wizard for whatever reason.
08:08And, like, people are excited about the future, and the players, and these stars, they want to be here.
08:14As a Wizards fan, we have never had that in our lifetime.
08:17And now we actually finally have that cool, sexy cologne that the Lakers have, or the Spurs have, the Celtics
08:24have.
08:25We kind of have some of that at this point.
08:27That's exciting.
08:27You're going a little far, but anyway.
08:29The one guy who they really hope they want to be here, he don't want to be here.
08:34Anthony Davis?
08:35Yes.
08:36I mean, do they want him here, though?
08:38He's a social media guy.
08:40He knows a lot of stuff.
08:42You know who said they want to be here, and the fans have lost their mind?
08:47Brandon Aiyu.
08:48Maybe he said, oh, hell, that's the way you get up on your side?
08:52Maybe he changed my little mindset a little bit here.
08:56It's a stretch, but anything happens.
09:00Kids think differently these days.
09:03I think he wants to go number one.
09:05Here's my read on it.
09:07When the Wizards won the lottery, I think he kind of wanted to go to Utah.
09:11Now I think he wants to be the number one pick.
09:16I hope he wants to be a champion more than he just wants to be the number one pick.
09:22Because sometimes people put so much emphasis on where they go in the draft, and they don't do anything else
09:27afterwards.
09:29Totally.
09:30I don't think, though, this is the type of dude that dogs it later.
09:38You know what I mean?
09:41I don't care who it is.
09:43I just want them to be right.
09:44Same thing I said about the commanders with the seventh pick.
09:48This team can use help everywhere.
09:50You just got to nail the pick.
09:52Whatever the pick is, you just got to nail it.
09:54That's my only requirement.
09:56My only rule is you got to nail this pick.
10:00And if A.J. DeBonsa now wants to be here, I'm good with it.
10:05Talking about this draft for me, is it like A.J. DeBonsa or nothing?
10:11I don't feel that way.
10:12I don't feel that way.
10:13I think there's a lot of ways they could go.
10:15I still think you could trade to three and get a whole bunch more picks.
10:22Oklahoma City, as much as they've built, they still have a boatload of picks.
10:26Hell yeah.
10:27And in a crazy NBA salary cap world, there is nothing you can do better
10:33to build your team long term than not having to pay every good player
10:39that comes up.
10:40Yeah.
10:41Because if it's all about draft and develop, more picks helps you draft
10:45and develop.
10:45Like, I almost – I like – but if they keep the pick and go with DeBonsa
10:50at one, I'm cool with it.
10:52I do not think the door is closed on Peterson.
10:54I do not think the door is closed on even Boozer.
10:58I do not think the door is closed on a trade.
11:00I think all of that remains in play, and we'll see how this all shakes out.
