The Ayer Keroh Sessions Court in Melaka on Wednesday (April 8) handed down fines ranging from RM500 to RM700, along with community service orders, against three men who admitted to littering cigarette butts in public spaces.

Crucially, this marks the first prosecution in Melaka under Section 77A of the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007, also known as Act 672.

00:1328-year-old Mohamed Fayez Sali, Yeo Hong Huat, aged 57, and Kay Dinesh, aged 29,
00:21entered their pleas after charges were read before Judge Raja Noor Adila Raja Mahyaldin
00:25at the Iyer Kero Sessions Court on Wednesday.
00:27Under Subsection 77A Subsection 1 of Act 672, offenders face a maximum fine of 2,000 ringgit,
00:35along with a community service order of up to 12 hours, to be completed within six months.
00:39In mitigation, the three accused, none of whom had legal representation,
00:44appealed for lighter sentences, citing family dependence, recent employment, and health concerns.
00:50But SWCorp prosecuting officers pushed back, urging the court to impose sentences
00:55that would serve as both rehabilitation for the offenders and a strong deterrent to the public.
01:00The court agreed.
01:02Mohamed Fayez and Dinesh were each fined 500 ringgit and ordered to complete 12 hours of community service.
01:09Yeo received a slightly heavier sentence, a 700 ringgit fine and 10 hours of community service.
01:14All three must fulfill their community service obligations within six months.
