00:13K. Kelvin Raj pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before Magistrate Nurul Farha
00:19Sulaiman on Friday. He was charged with having excessive levels of alcohol in his body while
00:25driving. This resulted in an accident along Jalan Temyang at 1.25 a.m. on Monday, August 18,
00:32that claimed the life of 23-year-old Naim Mullah Mohamed Afandi, who was on his motorcycle when
00:38the accused's car allegedly struck him. The victim was attached to the Jalan Campbell station.
00:45Kelvin Raj was charged under Section 44, Subsection 1B of the Road Transport Act, 1987, for causing
00:53death or injury while driving under the influence. He faces a jail term of between 10 and 15 years
00:59and a fine of between 50,000 ringgit and 100,000 ringgit upon conviction. He can also be barred
01:06from holding a driving license for a minimum of 10 years. The prosecution sought bail of 60,000 ringgit
01:12with one surety as the accused was facing a serious charge and also a flight risk. Kelvin Raj's lawyer
01:20A. Krishnaveni said the proposed amount was excessive as her client comes from a poor family
01:25and there was no reason for him to jump bail. She added that he has another case at the sessions court
01:31and never missed proceedings. Krishnaveni said bail would be posted by the accused's mother,
01:37a single parent who has to provide for four other children. Magistrate Nurul Farha then set bail at
01:435,000 ringgit with one surety and fixed October 16th for mention. She also ordered Kelvin Raj's
01:50driving license to be suspended until the disposal of the case.
