00:03how we doing everybody it's tyler wardy here aka wardy to many of you that know my content on
00:08youtube and today for the new york post sports youtube channel we're gonna deep dive our latest
00:13new york metropolitan straight out of flushing podcast solo style as the mets faltered and
00:18their latest series in st louis two games out of three against the st louis cardinals not only are
00:23we gonna deep dive the good the bad and most certainly the ugly takeaways from that series
00:28for the new york mets will also get into previewing their upcoming matchup beginning later on this
00:33evening west coast a gauntlet of a west coast trip beginning against the san francisco giants let us
00:39know your thoughts in the comments down below if you're watching this on youtube and make sure to
00:43download wherever you get your podcast now to hop right into this let's begin with the obvious okay
00:48the mets offense is absolutely putrid to begin the regular season there is no if ands or buts about
00:55it this is a new york mets team that on opening day had so many mets fans including myself feeling
01:00excited feeling like oh my goodness gracious this lineup is as advertised regardless of the defensive
01:06blunders with guys like o'neill cruz and center the mets have the bat on the ball early and often
01:11grinded out at bats work counts and did a fantastic job in doing so since opening day that offense has
01:18completely been non-existent in game two and game three against those pittsburgh pirates the offense was
01:24nowhere to be seen and while you could say yes it's frigid at city field going from 70 sunny to
01:3040 and
01:30freezing over a couple days span that absolutely threw wrench into things as the pirates didn't
01:35have much offense to show either but now as you now transition into that series in st louis to begin
01:41a gauntlet of a road trip a cardinals team similar to the pirates in the sense that they should be
01:45very
01:46beatable for this new york mets team to at minimum secure a series victory and this is not at all
01:51a slight
01:51or to discredit the cardinals and their players but when looking at roster build alone the mets should
01:57be in greater standing than all those three teams including themselves so when you look at this
02:01cardinal series game one gets off to a solid start for the mets in the sense of they get the
02:06victory
02:07even though that there was still a lot of things that you were not loving as a fan seen from
02:11the
02:11decision making of these batters you know a lot of guys who were grinding out at bats in the first
02:15couple games against the pirates weren't really doing that nearly as much that we saw in that mets
02:20victory as they went on to win by a final score of four to two and they did out hit
02:24the cardinals in
02:25that game one matchup 10 to 5 but the most notable thing out of this one was most certainly the
02:29fact
02:30that the mets really were not able to clutch up too much with runners and scoring position until
02:34boba shed who heard the boo birds from mets fans concluding his opening series there at city field
02:40stating to the media himself that i'm honestly surprised that i wasn't booed sooner you know i had
02:44terrible at bats and michette to his credit hacks went off saws went off to the opposite side
02:50with two outs with runners in scoring position to drive in a pair and ultimately give the mets the
02:55victory and that 42 victory while falling down mind you this same boba shed was the man who helped
03:00drive in the first round of the ball game via a ground out that got the runner in at third
03:04as
03:05francisco and door let off the game that we saw with his second triple and as many days so while
03:10the
03:10mets again didn't have an abundance of offense in this matchup and didn't do anything crazy with
03:15runners in scoring position it was guys like boba shed were able to come through in that three hole
03:19that you were desperately looking for jorge polanco who i honestly have been very encouraged with so
03:24far this season many mets batters have not stepped up but polanco has kind of been one of them while
03:29dealing with a nagging achilles it's not just the five walks you worked against the pirates it's also
03:34him having a couple hits including a double there that we saw in that game one matchup beyond that
03:38we also saw guys like jared young smoke a double into the gap gain the rare start at first base
03:44there because of again polanco needing a dh rep and the mets not wanting vientos in that righty
03:49righty matchup to begin the day young smokes won roughly 114 off the bat into the gap which is in
03:55itself drove in a run and juan soto did his thing driving in a run as well juan soto at
04:00the conclusion
04:00of this series is still the only new york met this year to have recorded a hit and every single
04:05game for
04:05the mets throughout their first six games this season so while juan soto has been in certainty
04:10sadly the rest of the offense farthest thing from the truth and pitching for the mets in that matchup
04:14was solid as clay holmes went just under six innings of work would have liked to see the walks a
04:19bit
04:19down because he was working a really early count that we saw i believe he's at 24 pitchers are so
04:24similar to noel mcclain's first inning against the pirates in that series finale but he finished with
04:28a final line of just two earned runs on 90 pitches tobias myers brooks railing devin williams all did
04:33their job they were as advertised so again a level of encouragement for mets fans through the first
04:39game in st louis but as we got into game two and game three this is where again it reared
04:44its ugly
04:45head yet again in game two of this matchup the new york mets are shut out for the first time
04:49this
04:49season and the clear takeaway from that game to defeat to the st louis carnals is no one has offense
04:55the mets simply couldn't buy it and while you can tip the cap and give credit where credit's due to
04:59a
05:00guy like andre plant who is starting against this mets team what's also true is that plant or
05:04planty however you want to say his name is someone who was terrible in the cardinals rotation last year
05:09posted a 5.3 year array and over 30 starts so on paper he was looking like the most favorable
05:15favorable pitching matchup for this mets offense and in reality no one knows how to hit him
05:19outside of juan soto who of course had himself a double in this game and a pair of hits jared
05:24young
05:24got a second straight day with the start at first base and the only thing that i really was head
05:29scratching about was why wasn't brett baity starting from the jump as baity has also been
05:34fairly consistent to begin the year when the mets haven't had much consistency not that baity has
05:38been laying the world on fire but he has been to a degree productive in ways that a lot of
05:42other
05:42batters want their nine for the mets haven't done that nearly as well to begin the season so baity came
05:48in later on in this game he did not record a hit but i would have really liked to see
05:52baity
05:53get this started either dh or give marcus simian an off day at second base because the mets think
05:58to themselves okay we're gonna ride mark vientos at dh for this game two matchup and a ready ready
06:04matchup in which he absolutely faltered i mean there was nothing that was overly encouraging about
06:08vientos and that's why he only batted twice before you saw baity come in this game i understand why
06:14to give reps to players especially early in the year off the bench by the same time knowing that
06:18mark vientos was a certainty to start game three of this series it makes it all the more head
06:22scratching as to why you decide to start him in game two in a matchup that clearly was not going
06:27to benefit him or this mets lineup so the offense was undoubtedly the biggest to blame no question
06:33about it but what can also be said is dickie lovelady being utilized again in a game 70 pitches across
06:40four games or so almost consistently is a massive problem and this is something that i've said on my
06:46youtube channel i'll say here to each and every one of you is carlos mendoza purposely doing things to
06:52get under mets fan skin of course not but when you see dickie lovelady utilized any tied ball game and
06:59extra innings in game two on that saturday against the pirates and if it wasn't for a louis robert
07:03walk-off the mets may have very well lost a game because they had no offense going lovelady gave up
07:09a run the ghost runner but wasn't his fault was an infield dribbler going down the third baseline 50
07:15miles per hour that just stayed fair when they were hoping it would go foul now as we get into
07:19the next day
07:20this is where it becomes all the more frustrating from a fan point of view brooks rarely after pitching
07:2511 pitches on that saturday against the pirates is supposedly not available the next day now if he
07:30had just returned from tommy john this would make a level of sense but no brooks rarely appeared in 30
07:35games for the mets post tommy john surgery for the 2025 season so your most reliable and your quickest
07:41option in the bullpen to work those quick counts and outs is not available and devon williams according
07:47to met skipper carlos mendoza wasn't available that game because oh yeah he pitched not only the
07:52day prior but because he warmed up on opening day thursday but never actually went in the game
07:56and you had an off day that friday that's why he wasn't available again make it make sense i can
08:02understand the devon williams aspect more because he threw 17 pitches a day prior whereas you saw brooks
08:07really throw just 11 that's really where it comes down to but lovely goes in that game and we see
08:14love
08:14lady get absolutely rocked you know you see it to be to the mets detriment as you get into that
08:20series finale and if love lady did not get rocked who knows the mets may have very well rallied all
08:25the way all the way back to win that game because they got no offense going in games two and
08:30three
08:30until the pirates start attack on and extras for the most part that we saw and the reason why that
08:34is relevant to the series i'll explain in a second but you need to understand the context of the build
08:39-up
08:39beyond carlos mendoza deciding that dickie love lady who is a inevitable dfa candidate for the
08:45mets sooner rather than later is not being put in positions early in the season where he is making or
08:49breaking ball games regardless of the offense not showing up is up to the manager and whoever else is
08:55helping make those decisions from front office down to put the mets in the best position to succeed
08:59every single game but already you can tell the mets are viewing things longer instead of what's right
09:05in front of them they are thinking oh we have a gauntlet of a road trip coming up we might
09:09as well
09:09just throw the rubber arm out there and see what happens even though you're in a tight or a tight
09:13ball game that's what they're deciding to do so for love lady to get rocked the way that he did
09:19when he
09:19was used in back-to-back days tell me how that is at all a logical decision for carlos mendoza
09:24and the
09:25new york mets and you don't have to answer because it's as simple as this it was not logical it
09:29was in fact
09:30illogical and you can make the argument about saving other arms but at the same time those arms need to
09:35be
09:35ready especially when called upon especially when they didn't even get worked much the day prior
09:40but love lady can go out and throw 20 plus pitches each day and that's perfectly fine he can go
09:44ahead
09:44and dictate ball games and winning losing for the mets when he will not be on this roster more than
09:49likely just a couple weeks from now if not sooner again these are players that don't have a long
09:54lasting impact and stay in the organization they should have no business being in any position to
09:58dictate a ball game for the mets they should be in nothing but solely low leverage and nothing else
10:03he made the bullpen on the final day of the year before opening day began yet okay it's a logical
10:09reason to go ahead and use him not only in game two and game three and then oh yeah we
10:14see more
10:14dicky love lady in the saint louis cardinals series and as we see that three to nothing loss there in
10:19game two against those cardinals love lady who comes in in a two-run deficit of a ball game a
10:25two-run
10:26deficit so just to paint the picture it's not like the mets were getting curb stomped it's not like the
10:31mets were in a position where they were down 10 runs and it's time to just bring in the garbage
10:36time reliever no the game was well within reach and grasp and while the offense is still most to
10:41blame from that outcome and from this series loss a thousand percent you can rightfully critique more
10:46than one thing believe it or not and in the case of carl smendoza's decision making he decides to run
10:51out dicky love lady when the mets are down just a pair still trying to figure out a way to
10:56rally
10:56there's still time you're only six innings into the ball game right so you're entering the seventh
11:00you still have nine outs to work with to try to make something happen and the mets have shown
11:04already this year their ability to be somewhat resilient and rally back later in the game they've
11:09done that so why not put them in best position to succeed to do that again instead carl smendoza
11:14says you know what let's put love lady in here and what does he do he gives up a bomb
11:18as soon as he
11:19faces his first batter love lady then goes back out for the eighth inning where he surprisingly does not
11:23give up a run but the white flag was already waived by carl smendoza and you can make the argument
11:29that these kind of decisions are in the mentality of essentially punting a game prematurely instead
11:35of focusing on what is right in front of you because i think and not only do i believe this
11:39but many
11:39mets fans in the community believe this at the moment is that if you are carl smendoza making
11:44these decisions what is logical again about putting dicky love lady in a circumstance where he can
11:50impact a game negatively for the mets when they're within reach if you're within reach by two runs or less
11:57there is nothing to justify putting love lady in the game with the sole exception of every other
12:03other reliever is not available but that wasn't true and the mets didn't use any other relievers at
12:09that point in the game it was just kodai sanga who was brilliant who was as advertised did exactly
12:14what i thought he would do against the cardinals lineup that is very hungry young and swinging through
12:20their shoes so because of this sanga i predicted heading into that matchup would give the mets at least
12:25six innings hopefully eight strikeouts or more and don't allow more than two earned runs and if it
12:30wasn't for luis robert literally looking like o'neill cruz in center from opening day where he
12:35completely misplayed a ball and played shallow and then instead instead of throwing to the cough man
12:39the next play threw all the way to home which allowed a single to become a double which again those
12:44runs ultimately came into score after the fact that doesn't happen kodai sanga may very well have had a
12:50scrolls outing so he dominates touches 99 on the gun throws the kitchen sink of his entire seven pitch
12:56mix utilizes the cutter good amount that we saw a bit more than usual and have that ghost fork working
13:02where it wasn't even its sharpest but was getting swing and miss out of his own kodai sanga was
13:07unbelievably encouraging and what was you could argue almost a master class of an outing the new york
13:12mets give them a nice slice of humble pie the same way that they did pretty much every single time
13:16jacob de grom was on the mound for this mets team over the years giving dominant outings every
13:21single time out there while the offense again was nowhere to be seen you know it also reminds me as
13:26a hockey fan uh the prime days of henrik lundquist with the new york rangers where he's having himself
13:31a 40 or 50 save type of game but the rangers still lose two to one you know because the
13:37offense
13:37again is just absolutely anemic so this most certainly applies when you see a kodai sanga do his thing
13:42but the offense is nowhere to be seen and then as we get into game three of this match of
13:47the series
13:47finale it goes from bad absolutely worse the cardinals go on to win this one two to one and
13:53there's so many things that are a problem with this game and it all starts and unfortunately ends
13:57with francisco lindor lindor thinks he has different outs than what he has in the ball game to start for
14:05freddie peralta so freddie has to work the inning longer than he should have and if that did not happen
14:10freddie peralta would have absolutely went six strong innings for the mets and if freddie peralta
14:15went six strong innings the mets likely win that game and win that series secondly the mets could
14:20have won that game and they just had their base runner actually stay on first for juan soto who
14:26smacked his first home run of the year that we saw in the sixth inning but instead lindor's caught
14:31sleeping between first and second with an obnoxious lead having no clue what he's doing i appreciate the
14:38fact that lindor held himself accountable post game but it doesn't change the fact that especially
14:42for a player like him making the money he is making that can't fly that can't happen and that needs
14:49to
14:49be the only time this season that lindor looks that bad fundamentally as a player because it is
14:54inexcusable what you forget the outs that you have you have been in this game for over 10 years
15:00what are we doing or about 10 years you look at the base running you know you're so much better
15:05than
15:05that what is going on here genuinely and the offense matthew liberator color me shocked he
15:11carves up the mets he had a great opening day outing for the cardinals he's a crafty south bomb
15:16that's hard to hit and this mets line put so many ready batters in looking to hit bombs we're not
15:21able
15:21to do it mark vientos got his second straight day start at dh this time or pardon me first base
15:27and he wasn't terrible he didn't look like a massive liability defensively and he was able to rip
15:33a double off of liberator who he i if i'm not mistaken now is three for six in his career
15:38against her along those lines because he hit that walk-off home run against liberator that we saw
15:42a couple years ago when he was called up in 2024 that really cued the dramatics for him
15:48so when you see the matchup that made sense that made a lot of sense but tyrone taylor getting the
15:53start in right field and brett baity is nowhere to be seen in the starting line for a second consecutive
15:59game i don't care that's a lefty lefty matchup baity has shown his ability and value to hit
16:03lefties before he smoked hits against the best lefties in the game last year specifically garrett
16:09crochet of the boston red sox casually one of the best starters in baseball and at the time
16:14one of the better relievers in baseball and i'm gonna butcher his name right now i want to say
16:19bernandino who is no longer now with the red sox because i believe he got traded to the rockies this
16:24past offseason but the point here is that we have seen baity hit against very good lefty pitching
16:30and in order for a guy like him to continue to advance his game you have to allow him to
16:35get
16:35these lefty lefty splits a reps rather instead he comes in the game after liberador's day is done
16:41and after vientos had an encouraging sign of success and he's gonna go ahead and face a ryan stanick
16:47who's a fastball heavy pitcher and vientos is a fastball heavy hitter it made a logical sense to
16:53keep him in the game there and instead of maybe putting baity in right field after tyrone taylor who
16:59should have never started the game to begin with i know tt does better against lefties and righties
17:03but there was nothing to truly justify tyrone getting a start there on a serious finale after
17:09you dropped the prior game with no offense to be seen but again you guys may disagree with that
17:15that's fine this is just coming from my opinion as someone who's a diehard and someone who's been
17:19locked in with them for what feels like forever now now to talk not just on tyrone taylor carson
17:24bench who would be the detriment of the new york mets at the end of this game that in itself
17:29could
17:29have been avoided if you just comfortably put brett baity in right field after tyrone taylor had a
17:34couple at bats why take vientos out when he's one of your lone certainties in offense this entire game
17:39when you're barely hitting again make it make sense but oh because the righty's coming in vientos
17:44can't hit again like what are we doing here how do you expect a player to build confidence and
17:49consistency especially a guy like mark who is so jekyll and hyde in his playing time when he is
17:55producing when he's actually out there doing things in two of the three games that he's played
17:59this year he's recorded a hit that's better than multiple mets right now it feels like right the
18:03mets are one of the worst teams they're actually ranked if i'm not mistaken 29th in baseball right
18:07now in overall offense and we'll get to runners in scoring position trust me we'll get to that here
18:11shortly because i got some choice words to say about that but baity could have not only been
18:16utilized in the right field he also could have been at second base and knowing that he could
18:21have been at second base to lessen the workload of marcus simian on the series finale when simian
18:26has been one of the most non-existent bats for the mets this entire season thus far six games in
18:31he's a veteran 35 36 years of age makes so much sense that if you're going to give a guy
18:36either an
18:37off day or end his day prematurely allow baity to be that exception who's a swiss army knife who can
18:42play multiple positions infield and outfield comfortably where he will not be a liability
18:47for you so carlos mendoza decides to not opt for that baity's 0 for 3 after he comes in so
18:54he
18:54provides nothing sadly and the offense again had nothing jorge polanco ripped a leadoff double
19:00late in this ball game and the mets strand him they do they do nothing juan soto had that solo
19:05shot
19:05to right his first of the year should have been the game winning home run for the mets if it
19:09was just a
19:10two run shot with londor being competent and staying that second pardon me first rather
19:13that didn't happen and freddie peralta again did exactly what i thought he would against a team he
19:19knows so well and a ballpark he knows so well during his many years in milwaukee peralta goes 5.1
19:24innings
19:25three hits warner and run seven strikeouts two walks fantastic outing his best yet between his two
19:31starts freddie was dotting the corners i really liked his off speed and breaking pitch makeup a lot to
19:37be encouraged by what peralta is outing against a young hungry and against swinging through their
19:41shoes type of offense for the st louis carnals yet because of londor's blunder peralta's pulled from
19:48this game at 92 pitches and 5.1 innings huasca brasband who has been one of the few really really
19:55good relievers so far this season for the new york mets and i shouldn't just say a few there's been
19:59there's been a number of solid relievers for the mets with the exception of pretty much
20:02love lady and louis scarsey everyone else has been pretty much nails for the most part
20:06but brasband comes in and the one bugaboo with brasband which goes in hand with last year that
20:11we saw is that when it comes to inherited runners he's not the same guy as he is when he's
20:15out there
20:16base is cleared just for him to work three outs but as we continue on with this brasband comes in
20:21allows one of those inherited runners to score and that would be how the cardinals tie this ball game
20:26and then bring it to extras that alone could have been avoided again if londor did his job properly
20:32from the start of this game all the more frustrating to see how this is unfolding brooks really dominant
20:38yet again luke weaver awesome devon williams works around a leadoff walk against mason win without a
20:45problem and tobias myers gives up that inherited runner and extras but it's not him it's the offense
20:52the offense had bases loaded less than two out in extra innings and they were not able to drive in
20:58a single run so as frustrating as some of carlos mendoza's decisions can be had and be argued
21:05absolutely what is also true is that the new york mets offensively did nothing nothing not a squat
21:13to position themselves to have success in this series especially with it being a rain delay especially
21:19with it going the pace that it went every time that it's a rainy day in st louis it's a
21:24bad time
21:25to be a new york mets fan i really cannot recall the last time that the mets had things in
21:29their
21:29favor when they go to st louis and it's not great weather like this is to it see how they
21:35perform so
21:35much of the time at city field they don't enjoy the weather and i don't blame them but they need
21:40to be
21:40able to handle that kind of adversity because that in itself is a problem the mets were north of 13
21:45games
21:45below 500 last year and now already they have a losing record again you got a lot of games to
21:50be
21:50had i'm not saying this is at all the end of the world but making sure that you don't have
21:54such
21:54drastic success or lack thereof from home to away is so imperative for the mets to find consistency
22:01this season so when you see the bats collectively go just under one for 30 with runners and scoring
22:09position this series that in itself is unbelievably alarming because the mets on paper last year
22:14weren't actually terrible with runners and scoring position they were actually proficient in certain
22:18areas but if you are an actual fan and watched with the eye test you and i both know very
22:24well
22:24when it came to the clutch gene the mets simply never had it there's a reason why they went over
22:2970
22:30entering the ninth inning trailing a run or more last year okay absolutely historically bad from a clutch
22:37standpoint so runner and scoring position numbers only mean so much if you're not really producing late in a
22:43game especially when you need to rally in those leverage moments that fully warranted so far the
22:49new york mets are showing you unfortunately this is more of a continuation of what we have seen and
22:55to make matters even worse carson bench who comes in after tyron taylor in right field someone who again
23:01i wasn't opposed to seeing come in the game we know he's been outmatched at the mlb level so far
23:06with
23:07this hitting but a ball with so much hanging time and extra innings with mason win should have been a
23:12clear fly out and right carson bench not in proper position bolting slides short the ball drops and
23:19that's the walk-off winner i mean a very fitting fashion for the mets to lose a series in that
23:24way
23:24i just hope for carson bench he doesn't hang his head too low on such a thing because that's his
23:28first
23:28kind of no no can't do that at the major league level kind of moment so fundamentals just simply did
23:34not
23:34exist throughout this and i would like to partly blame keith hernandez for not being on the broadcast
23:39the entire way i know he's dealing with back young man i hope keith heals up and gets better with
23:43that
23:44i'm just saying this jokingly but as keith especially as the former cardinal and matt will famously say
23:49about bad fundamentals and he's shaking his head i mean that was on full display and to make matters
23:54even worse your offense is nowhere to be seen while your pitching is absolutely nails i mean your pitching
23:59is not the reason why you lost these games nor is your pitching the reason why you've lost any games
24:03this year you just have yourself to blame the mets are showing themselves in the foot live in real
24:08time because they are already showing you they don't have the unity when it comes to the offense
24:13there's clear gaps and finding that consistency right now and some of the things that they were
24:18doing so brilliantly in the first couple games of the year they did very little of in that second
24:22series against the cardinals in the sense of grinding out at bats working counts working walks
24:28again pale in comparison in the cardinals matchup versus how the season initially began against
24:33paul schemes of all people why because baseball so while it's just six games of the 162 and you
24:39know the mets will get in a flow at some point when they do they'll play really good baseball i'm
24:43sure
24:43this year every game counts not only was last year an example of that even though they were 13 games
24:48bowl 500 from mid-june onward they still didn't make playoffs because the final game of the year which
24:52is crazy but we have seen many times under the steve con regime of this mets team again falling short
24:59because of just a couple games whether it's winning the division or making playoffs whatever the case
25:04may be this is not something they're unfamiliar with so it's imperative that for carlos mendoza
25:09who especially missed the mark and more ways than one as manager for the mets last year dealing with a
25:14lot of turmoil and didn't handle it overly overly well depending on the circumstance he did and he didn't
25:19depending on what area we're talking about but adding that with everything else going on it is so
25:25important for the troy snickers the newly appointed mets hitting coach the jeff alberts that's
25:30officially at the mlb level as your heading director the jd martinez's that you just hired as your special
25:36advisor to david stearns to be around the team more constantly you know all those things are good but
25:42those people need to come together early and help bring more unity with this team and then it comes to
25:47the players right you have a lot of change you have a lot of new and polanco and bichette and
25:52simian and
25:53robert but these batters are such a pivotal piece to your core that when they collectively are not
26:00performing you have yourself a much greater issue then you add in a francisco lindor and a juan soto
26:05if they're not doing their thing it makes it even worse right thankfully juan's been doing his thing
26:10and lindor has had levels of success offensively this year but you need to find that consistency
26:15and the longer that you wait to find it the more you are going to lose games that you are
26:19going to
26:20regret so heavily down the stretch because you had dominant pitching when there will be stretches
26:24this year where you don't think about it how many starts did the new york mets have from june 12th
26:30onward last year when kodai single went down with his injury how many starts did they have of a starter
26:35going north of six innings and allowing two runs or less not all that much okay not only did they
26:42struggle heavily to get length out of starters but they struggled mightily get to get quality
26:46out of them so wasting these kind of outings will only be to the detriment of this team as we
26:52move
26:52forward this year goes without saying they need to wake up and it needs to happen sooner rather than
26:58later doesn't matter that's game six of the 162 last time i checked every single game matters just as
27:04much as the next by time this season has concluded so mets fans i would love to hear from you
27:08especially
27:09in the comments down below what are your thoughts and key takeaways from the mets faltering two games out of
27:14three what was a very winnable series in st louis and what's your collective thoughts about the mets
27:19three losses this year having everything to do with the mets just shooting themselves in the foot
27:23getting in their own way i mean the mets know how to beat themselves more than most teams in major
27:28league baseball but we can say this as fans i can say this entering my sixth season now covering this
27:33club every single day we've seen live in real time that even when you break up a core and change
27:38up a
27:39vibe sometimes you can only do so much at times about the stench or the lack of aura that comes
27:45with this organization at times when things really aren't going right and thankfully we're not in a
27:50doomsday scenario we're not in oh my god sky's falling we got a lot of ball to be had and
27:54i'm
27:55looking forward to seeing the mets hit their highs i'm not looking forward to seeing them hit their lows
27:58but one does have to hope those lows most certainly do not outweigh the highs the way that that was
28:04for such
28:04a large part of the 2025 season now as we get into their upcoming series that begins tonight
28:12against the san francisco giants let's give you guys a quick rundown on the pitching matchups and
28:16then we'll get into what to look for from the mets point of view versus the giants point of view
28:20game
28:20one again thursday 9 45 p.m eastern so my sleep schedule is completely cooked the next number of
28:26days i have to do post game coverage for it we see your david pearson's towing the rubber after having
28:30a really good first time for the mets in which he did not allow a single earned run
28:34against robbie ray it's a lefty lefty matchup again mets against lefties are so jekyll and high
28:39you don't know what to expect sometimes they look good and a lot of times they look bad and
28:44for the righty hitters that the mets have in this live from simeon to bichette to the switcherters
28:49and bilanco and lindor to robert to everyone else in company simeon there is a lot of potential to do
28:57well against left-handed pitching but it's up to this mets team to make sure they're waking up on the
29:01right side versus the wrong side of the bed and actually look like they're going to be able to
29:05grind out consistent at bats throughout this ball game and he's one through nine game two of the series
29:09friday 10 15 p.m eastern is your start noel mcclain is towing the rubber after what wasn't his most
29:15dominant outing to begin the year but was able to settle down nicely and have a big strike out there
29:19to end his day that we saw against tyler mailey who's getting the start who didn't have a great
29:25outing but not a terrible outing to his first one he just won four innings so be great if the
29:29mets can
29:29work that pitch count early against mailey someone who's really fighting trying to find consistency
29:34really really hasn't had much of it since he's been gone from honestly i mean cincinnati since he's
29:40been traded from the reds on the 2022 season mailey has not been able to put up consistent numbers he
29:45hasn't had more than 16 starts at the major league level since the 2022 year and in 2025 with the
29:52texas
29:52rangers he did post a just over two-year rate in 16 starts but when you look at the expected
29:57numbers
29:57metrics he had a lot of lady luck on his side kind of like david pearson at times so it
30:01might
30:01not be to his detriment we'll just wait and see game three of this matchup also a 10 15 eastern
30:07that
30:07you're going to see or my apologies everybody it's actually going to be a 905 eastern and that's going
30:12to be clay holmes towing the rubber for his second start of the year he has a 3.18 year
30:15ray against the
30:17young right-hander that being in a land in a roop if that's how you pronounce his last name if
30:21it's
30:21rope rope potato potato let me know he won an awesome six dominant innings his first time out
30:27there including seven strikeouts for the san francisco giants so he has been off to a great
30:31start this year and the serious finale is kodai singa looking to do more dominance but he's going
30:36to have to do it against the logan webb who's looking to bounce back obviously after having a
30:40not so ideal first start of the year against the new york yankees on netflix and then having a much
30:46better start against a san yugo padres team that wasn't hitting this mess team is not hitting either so
30:51hopefully they can get some type of groove and consistency going by the series finale here
30:55because that game may very well dictate who wins this matchup so it's a four game series so ideally
31:00for the mets you want to at worst split the series that maximum sweep i don't see a role where
31:05they're
31:05going to sweep i would love to see that happen they'll have to see to believe it how the mets
31:10can
31:10secure three out of four is the following they need to take advantage of a giants lineup that again can
31:16at
31:16times be very jekyll and hyde on what you're getting one thing that strikes me about the giants
31:20lap is how much it feels like they don't have unity it feels like they just have a lot of
31:24players
31:25that they kind of threw out the wall to see what would stick and maybe you can make that argument
31:29with the mets two to two to two degree i'm not saying you can't but for san fran there's a
31:33reason
31:33why they have plateaued and stayed around a 500 club for the past number of years and tony vitello their
31:39new manager coming straight out of college which is a very unique and rare thing to see in today's game
31:43you know the way that he approaches the game is very different than a lot of traditional managers in
31:48baseball so we might see some unique or complex decisions that he decides to make either to the
31:53benefit or to the detriment of the giants throughout this series but for san fran it'll always come down
31:59to their offense not producing the way that they need it to and that's where the mets need to pounce
32:03in this series while they have some farewell pitching matchups and offensively it goes without
32:07saying they need to take advantage of these matchups when it is in their favor now the pitching
32:11matchups look pretty good against the giants like the giants actually have some really good
32:15pitchers in this between webb robbie ray and the youngster rup who looks so good as first outing
32:20that should have you levels of concern but as we know in baseball sometimes the best pitching
32:24matchups on paper become the biggest slug fest and if opening day is a prime example of that i don't
32:30know what is not that the mets completely tore up paul skeins but one way or the other he was
32:34charged
32:34five earned runs and exited the ball game in this point two innings right so things to think about
32:38as we hand that matchup and i have to say an x factor for the mets undoubtedly needs to be
32:43again some of the newcomers you need more from boba shett you need marcus simian to finally have
32:48a series to actually show a bit of his worth it would be great if carson bench depending on how
32:52much he starts in this series too just settles down a little bit you know again i know this is
32:56an
32:56exciting but anxious time for him and the more that he finds a groove in his playing time i think
33:01naturally the consistency with the bat will come and follow as well i'm not worried defensively with
33:05bench it was just a terrible terrible way for that series finale to end and to drop the series
33:11against the cardinals francisco alvarez did not look overly encouraging at all and that cardinal
33:17series after he got off to a great start we'll love to see alvarez bounce back and have a quality
33:21series here and san fran in the bay area uh luis robert as well again would like to see more
33:26out
33:26of luis after he had a very good first series against the pittsburgh pirates and tied juan soto
33:31for the most hits that series with five apiece francisco and dorn knows what he needs to do so i'm
33:35not
33:35going to go on that spiel and what mendy does with the bullpen will be really important here it's a
33:40four game gauntlet depending on the length or lack thereof you get from your starters is going to
33:44dictate how taxed your bullpen is going to be the mets have a bunch of games without off day right
33:48now so that's where when we think of the dick you love ladies among others it may inevitably be one
33:54of those things that rears its head again where you see those decisions made it comes back to bite
33:58the mets and we sit here kick and scream about it because you saw from a mile away the hope
34:02is that
34:02the mets again can either take two or three wins if you can sweep them electric never going to complain
34:09about that as a mets fan but to be determined as to what is going to happen in this late
34:13series
34:13against the san francisco giants team that to begin the year right now are two and four on the season
34:18and the giants are very well team that might not make postseason play again they're going to hope
34:22it to make postseason play but they just have a lot of good guys and not a lot of great
34:26guys and for
34:27the mets they have some great guys and hopefully those great guys can help lead with the rest of the
34:31good guys in order to have success that they need throughout the whole 162 but everybody let us know your
34:36thoughts in the comments down below after recapping the st louis carnals previewing the upcoming matchup
