00:03how are you everybody it's Tyler Ward aka Wardy here and we're back at it with our latest straight
00:08out flushing podcast live from our studio here in Manhattan we're going to deep dive New York
00:12Mets that are not going to be returning for the 2027 season for a multitude of reasons we want
00:18to hear from you Mets fans and baseball fans in general in the comments down below your thoughts
00:22about these players and ultimately why you see them not returning which ones do you agree most
00:27with versus disagree with and everything else in between and of course make sure to hit that like
00:32and subscribe button for all things New York Mets here on the New York Post Sports YouTube channel
00:36now let's get right into this conversation let's begin our player today that being in Tobias Myers
00:41now what is the trend with Tobias Myers that we've seen with other pitchers that have come along from
00:46Milwaukee Brewers under the David Sterns regime the simple answer is they just haven't performed in
00:50Flushing Queens from Adrian Hauser to Freddy Peralta to Tobias Myers to a lesser extent Devin
00:56Williams all these players have not been able to live up to the hype or the standard that was
01:01expected when they initially arrived here with the New York Mets and for Myers who was initially
01:05looking like a nice piece along the puzzle that was Freddy Peralta heading into the 2026 season
01:11not only colossally failed but in how the New York Mets utilize a 28 year old right-hander
01:15didn't really benefit things either you know Myers was thrown in various situations early and often
01:20this year mainly as a reliever that we saw but did of course have some looks as someone that could
01:25be
01:25thrown out there as a spot starter and what we saw last year with the Milwaukee Brewers was far more
01:30dominance in his final year there as a reliever than a starter where he had his most success in the
01:352024 season where he was pitching against the New York Mets allowing just a couple earned runs across
01:40five innings or so in the 2024 wild card yeah that same wild card around that had Frankie Montas
01:45pitching against the New York Mets I know and speaking of Frankie no one was worse talking about
01:49former Milwaukee Brewers to New York Mets than himself and the David Sterns regime and that trend
01:54has just sadly continued here with Myers you know this past season for the New York Mets and 53
01:59innings for Tobias mind you he only started three games out of 32 outings he had we're looking at a
02:04roughly 7k per night at 2.68 walks per night but an inflated one and a half home run per
02:09nine that
02:09really came to bite him a five and a half year ray and a 4.1 expected year ray so
02:14the fit and expected
02:15fips aren't great either for Tobias he definitely had a luck not on his side last year also was thrown
02:20down at times what felt a little premature to be sent to Syracuse and when he was in Syracuse
02:25he did fluctuate with his success as well so for the Mets and looking to properly position themselves
02:30for continued success in 2027 and by continued I'm referring to a bullpen that's coming off of
02:36otherwise a really good year for the New York Mets all things considered even before and then after
02:40the trade deadline does Tobias Myers fit into their plans as someone who's under club control till 2031
02:46or is he someone who could find himself on his way out because he's boxed out by other players who
02:51could impress more by time this season gets to starting and potentially utilizing Myers and a
02:56deal elsewhere even if it is to a lesser degree we shall see but there is rightful reason to believe
03:01that Tobias his time may have already come to an end with the New York Mets and we want to
03:05know how
03:05you guys feel about that in the comments down below now as we go on from Tobias Myers let's get
03:10into another player at the major league level for the New York Mets and that is going to be someone
03:13who
03:14has the least experience probably at the major leagues that you may see in today's video and
03:18that is going to be yes Ronnie Mauricio now Ronnie had huge opportunity massive runway to have pretty
03:25much everyday playing time in the 2026 season when Francisco Lindor went down one injury was out for
03:30a calendar month or so unfortunately for Ronnie not only did he not take advantage of that opportunity
03:35but the worst scenario imaginable happened Ronnie just a couple days into getting consistent starts more
03:40at the shortstop position replacing Lindor for that month span he goes down with injury and he's out
03:45basically the exact same time frame so for Ronnie this season he only had himself a cup of coffee
03:51at the major league level that we saw for the New York Mets and for the 25 year old in
03:55just 20 games
03:56and 62 play appearances had four home runs seven runs scored eight RBIs this included three home runs
04:02in his final two games of the year against the Washington Nationals on the road at 220 average and batting
04:07right around nine percent below league average as a pitcher with a um you know a slug at 441 and
04:14an
04:14offense and defense you know that leaves a bit to be desired obviously in this small sample now for
04:19Ronnie the reason why us Mets fans have bought into him for so long is mainly because of the raw
04:24potential
04:24that comes along with them it's not just because he's having scorching home runs at 110 miles per hour
04:29off the bat in spring training what feels like every year it's more so because Ronnie has exemplified
04:33an ability to have Mets fans myself included at times buy in so that pure athleticism what could
04:39really transition to something special at the major league level I mean let's not forget it was
04:42a couple years ago that we were hyping Ronnie up so covetedly to the point that we were putting him
04:46in a similar class as to if everything goes right this could be in similarity what you have in an
04:50L.E. De La Cruz or in O'Neal Cruz for example from the respective clubs and the NL Central
04:55now
04:56obviously that has not at all come to fruition but Ronnie on the triple A level is a man possessed
05:01batting north of 300 a well over 800 OPS and the guy that looks like a true quad A player
05:06where he's
05:06way too good for the triple A level but not good enough to get consistent reps of the major league
05:11level now begs the question how the New York Mets done a proper job in giving him ample runway
05:16uh you could argue no the Mets have not done a great job with Ronnie his development the past couple
05:21years because we know guys like Beatty and Vientos having more success at times as well as Ronnie again
05:27from being out for a counter year from sustaining an injury with his tear a couple years ago in the
05:31Dominican Winter League that did not help either because he was really supposed to have a great
05:35impact on the New York Mets heading into the 2024 season initially and that obviously came
05:40nowhere to fruition so for Ronnie between the lack of health lack of consistency and from what I've heard
05:45around the organization a huge lack of optimism that this is someone that could really thrive
05:49with the Mets given the lack of availability in the infield more so because the Mets are not confident
05:54and Ronnie Reese's ability to be an infielder at the major league level at least not for them from
05:58what we've seen thus far uh people have stated me and I've heard around as well that it looks like
06:02he could be a better profile in the outfield than anything else could provide value to the New York
06:07Mets but at the same time are the New York Mets really going to position themselves to keep Ronnie
06:11another year where you essentially don't have any minor league options left now entering his age 26
06:16season you're diminishing his value do you want to try to get something to return for somewhere that you
06:22could actually benefit by maybe adding to your bullpen or a different area of need I think it
06:27goes without saying that Ronnie just really doesn't have a spot on this Mets team unless the Mets really
06:32feel comfortable with him being someone that they utilize off the bench and he's someone that takes
06:36complete advantage of that opportunity every now and then time will tell but Ronnie does feel like
06:40one along with honestly could argue the majority if not all these so-called baby Mets and the
06:45Francisco Alvarez's Brett Beatty's and Mark Vientos is the world separate from Ronnie of all guys who have
06:51failed to meet expectations in Queens and most Mets fans will be content with parting ways with all
06:56if not most of them so let us know your thoughts in the comments down below regarding Ronnie and last
07:01but not least from my picks in this one because I'm sharing three and Dex will have his as well
07:06we're
07:06going with a player that we talked a lot about in our last episode here on Straight Out Flushing
07:10covering the New York Mets and on my new and on my YouTube channel at Wardian Wham and that's the
07:15veteran of Marcus Simeon guys let's call it how it is okay did the New York Mets acquire Marcus
07:19Simeon solely for talent or was it more so for contrast contract swap knowing the Mets would
07:24save north of 30 million dollars in differential with Simeon only having two more years left on
07:29his deal at the time of his talking and Nemo having more than two that's really what this boils down
07:33to it was about giving runway to Carson Bench to have opportunity to be a starting outfielder in a
07:39spot that would have otherwise been taken over by someone like Brandon Nemo to start the 2026 season
07:44that worked beautifully for David Stern's the New York Mets and you can give him credit there
07:48but when it comes to acquiring Simeon as essentially offsetting the deal and the contracts a bit
07:53Marcus Simeon not only struggled to provide defense which is what he's supposed to be known for his
07:57entire career but he's someone that also moved the needle and know which way shape or form for the
08:02club in ways that you wanted as a veteran now from a mentorship and leadership perspective I'm sure
08:06Marcus is fantastic and inside and out of the clubhouse he was a fantastic captain during his time
08:11with the Texas Rangers helping them to a 2023 World Series championship when he initially signed that
08:16massive north of $200 million long-term contract while the Mets have the tail end of that deal
08:21just because they have the tail end does not mean that they need to commit to it and what I
08:24mean by
08:25that is is that this is the Robinson Cano situation all over again everybody okay what do the New York
08:29Mets have at second base as David Stern's famously said himself when saying he's going to be non-committal
08:35as to who will be starting at second next year and that is rookies prospects knocking on the door
08:41from the farm so when you look at a million Petrie who they acquired the traded line batted over 300
08:45after being acquired the organization from AA to AAA and over 800 OPS and had the best K to walk
08:50ratio among all eligible minor league players in the minors this year out of north of 800 for
08:55context to someone in Mitch Voigt who heavily blossomed and yes as pretty as he looks on the
09:01outside he is just as good when it comes to obviously the bat to ball skills the defense and
09:06the personality he's really is the true package when you look at Mitch Voigt he's someone that batted north
09:10of 400 for the majority of time that he was moved up to AA with the rumble ponies this year
09:14and is going to be touching Syracuse with the Mets there on the AAA level before we know it
09:18and last but most certainly not least in this conversation is Jefferson Rojas the Mets top
09:23prospect who's officially ranked 68th best prospect in baseball and that will be Pipeline's
09:27latest rankings that came out over this past week at the time of his talking Rojas who like
09:32Voigt and like Petrie are shortstop prospects but can play second and can play third have had
09:37reps at those respective positions this past season no different was the case for Rojas who was
09:42absolutely phenomenal batting went north of you know 30 home runs over 90 RBIs well over 100 OPS
09:47and was well above the average as a hitter stole a boatload of bags over 30 or so that we
09:52saw
09:52and someone who could really bring a lot to the table for the New York Mets as a north of
09:57five
09:57tool athlete for the 21 year old so for Marcus Simeon who finished his 2026 campaign with 15 home
10:03runs the same that he had last year 49 RBIs at 215 batting average and batting quite literally 26%
10:09below league average it's not going to get the job done for a both net negative offensive and
10:13defensive player and while Simeon does have some solid value when it comes to his base running that
10:18maybe could someone justify him off the bench as more of your mentor for the young guys to begin next
10:23season as no longer an everyday player and someone who needs to accept the role and eliminate a role
10:27because he's still getting paid the big bucks at 25 if not 26 million dollars next season I believe
10:32it's in the best interest of the New York Mets to just cut this dead weight entirely as he did
10:36with
10:36Robinson Cano in the final years of his deal give full runway to the young guys they're at second
10:41base as we have seen the Mets ability to succeed with the young movement of top prospects in the
10:47outfield and AGU and Carson Mench to the rotation and Noah McClain to Zach Thornton to Christian Scott
10:52to Jonah Ton etc to obviously what I believe will be the wave of the infield breakout here in 2027
10:57whenever the season may begin Simeon is entering his age 36 season was a liability in multiple
11:03facets for this New York Mets team is owed 46 million dollars across the next two years but
11:08here's what I'm going to say to each and every one of you who maybe have skepticism on this thought
11:12process what do you think is the better option for the New York Mets option a holding on to Marcus
11:17Simeon trying to utilize him in a limited role when he's a net negative offensive and defensive player
11:22and may not even be able to transition well off the bench and someone who again while he loves to
11:27be
11:27Iron Man is someone who again may very well be coming off ice cold off the bench as someone who's
11:32usually not used to that position and someone who obviously has been passionate about being an
11:37everyday player throughout his career but just doesn't have have it like he used to he literally
11:41had one of the worst qualifying OPSs in baseball last year at just over 700 he was nothing short of
11:46garbage that we saw with the bat and the defense did not leave much to be desired either so you
11:50want
11:51option a with Simeon staying on the roster on the bench when you could have a better option there or
11:55go
11:56with an option B where you eat the 46 million dollars the next two years and you eat it because
12:00no one in
12:00their right mind is going to take on that contract because the only way that an opposing team would
12:04likely take on that deal is that the New York Mets either give a massive sweetener like giving up top
12:09prospects which they most certainly shouldn't do in both when they just bolstered their farm this past
12:13deadline or the other route which is that they're going to do a trade where it's another contract swap
12:17which is again doing the same mistake over again from what they just did with Brandon Nemo so option
12:23B here would be to cut the dead weight of Simeon outright and acquire a player separate from your young
12:29guns that you're expecting to blossom because you still want someone I believe off the bench that
12:34has not only some veteran leadership but someone that is more accustomed to the role and what would
12:39be asked and say a limited part-time player off your bench and you know this past year there was
12:44a
12:44player that fit that profile so well for the corner outfield NDH initially and yeah you remember
12:49Mike Tauchman who he raved about a lot that man sadly never played played a single game at all in
12:54the
12:54major league season this year because a torn meniscus at the age of 35 in spring training
12:59just dismantled his entire season but the point though was that at the time that was a player
13:03profile that made a lot of sense for the club and really a fantastic player in a platoon role who
13:08is
13:08one of the better players in the game for knowing his role there as a veteran corner outfielder and
13:14someone who's handled this market before New York during his time with the Yankees a number of years ago
13:18for the Mets they should go and look in similarity for the infield acquire a player in the range of
13:23anywhere from 5 to 15 million you know essentially take the sunken cost from 46 million and add that
13:29to either you know 56 if not 60 million but would you rather have 60 million dollars but you're still
13:37getting positive production out of a player just at you know an egregious rate by adding what you
13:43acquired in the free agent market and that utility player that role player for a year at 5 to 15
13:48million
13:48you know adding that with a sunken cost of 46 or 46 million dollars that you're eating entirely and
13:56it's a net negative player on your roster and he's holding you back from having more success than
14:00what you otherwise should be having listen for context everybody it's high France for the Mets were in the
14:05market of this past offseason like a couple other clubs that we saw didn't commit to him as a first
14:11base option my god should they have he goes the Padres signs a minor league contract not even a guarantee
14:16major league deal and he has north of 30 home runs north of 900 OPS for the San Diego Padres
14:21this year
14:22now did the location of San Diego factor in this and that lineup and you know Petco Park and the
14:27vibes absolutely but still tie France was a fantastic defensive web gem at first last year would have
14:33made plenty of sense for the Mets and a guy that could put too matured yawn and the Mets really
14:36thought
14:37it was in their best interest to go with Mark Vientos again I digress but the point here though is
14:41that
14:42you can find hidden gems on the market you know at a fraction of the cost for you know otherwise
14:46paying continuing to roster a player that is on a massive overpay a contract that you did not
14:52initially commit to the Rangers did not the New York Mets here so there should be less bias into it
14:56than ever before no different than the Robinson Cano contract was signed with Brody Van Wagenen during
15:01his time as just solely agent for Robbie during his time with the Seattle Mariners and then of course
15:07Brody gets hired as the GM of the New York Mets and talk about you know I don't know um
15:12some
15:12connection going on here and the Mets acquire that same contract and then you know when Steve's here
15:17he's like you know what yeah we're not going to deal with that we're just going to cut this outright
15:20because that's what's best for the club and that is what is best for this New York Mets team of
15:25Marcus
15:26Simeon so Mets fans we definitely want to know how you guys and gals feel in the comments down below
15:30regarding players that we do not foresee to return next season for a multitude of reasons let us know
15:35what players you agree most and disagree with and why and ultimately be on the lookout as we're
15:39going to have various different topics regarding the New York Mets from latest news as the offseason
15:44will be officially punished shortly with the playoff run continuing right now and a boatload
15:49of various topics to get into regarding the club I think you guys and gals are going to enjoy so
