00:00How can you not be romantic about ending a game with the first ever ABS Game Ending Challenge?
00:08That's what happened yesterday. The Rangers do lose.
00:11They do lose the game 8-3, and they lose the game at the very end on a challenge
00:17that was giving the Orioles the victory with the correct call being made.
00:24What did you guys think about the ending with the challenge and all that?
00:28Well, it's fine. I mean, I don't love it, but I've seen games end on check swings before.
00:33Is it going to be a difference like we have in the NFL where it's like,
00:36all right, we can do overtime like this, but when the playoffs happen, we're going to change it.
00:39That's what you want. That's what it seems like you want.
00:41I would like to. Yeah, I don't know what you could do because I wanted to get the call right.
00:45Just turn the ABS off.
00:47See, I hate, I don't like, I really hate whenever they go like,
00:50all right, this means more, so we're just going to change the rules now.
00:53Right.
00:54That's true. Like, you don't want to, yeah, you don't want to.
00:56But I do like it in the NFL where they change the rules.
00:59I don't mind it in the NFL postseason when it's like, this is not going to end in a tie.
01:05Yeah.
01:05Oh, sure. Yeah, you can't have a tie.
01:07So, like, yeah, I agree with that.
01:09I do wish they would just play out an entire overtime quarter and just like it.
01:15That would be, I know they'll never do it,
01:16but my preference would be just do another 15 minute period
01:21and run overtime until the period's over.
01:24I, um, yeah, I like that they change it up in the NFL.
01:27I obviously, I do not want three on three hockey in overtime in the playoffs.
01:32You know, it's shootouts.
01:33Right.
01:33So, you know, and obviously I don't want the ghost runner in baseball in the postseason.
01:37And they don't do it, thankfully.
01:39Yeah, I mean, the ghost runner, I would just like to get rid of period.
01:42I know nobody else wants to get rid of it at this point.
01:44They don't do the ghost runner in the postseason?
01:47No, it goes right to old school, play 18 innings, whatever.
01:51Yeah, I like that it's different.
01:52Yeah.
01:52I don't know that anybody's on a better streak in the history of being a commissioner, though,
01:57than Rob Manfred.
01:58Whoa.
01:59In terms of presenting something that everybody was saying this is going to suck
02:05and then him being right.
02:06He's done it, like, with five straight moves.
02:09Like, it's clock.
02:10The pitch clock.
02:11They did start stealing more bases when they expanded the bases.
02:16The commitment to the World Baseball Classic has become more popular.
02:19He's been right about the challenge system when a bunch of people didn't want to do that.
02:23The ghost runner, I don't like it, but most people seem to.
02:26So, like, he's generally knocked these out.
02:29Adam Silver needs to call him.
02:31He sucks.
02:32I hate Adam Silver.
02:33Man, I'll tell you, you know, it's because, you know, college basketball ratings were up.
02:36The World Baseball Classic baseball ratings were up.
02:39People like baseball and basketball.
02:42Baseball got bogged down by it was too slow, and, you know, he needed a commissioner.
02:48The joke is that Rob hates baseball.
02:50Well, you know what baseball needed?
02:51They needed a commissioner who wasn't, you know.
02:54In love with the current product.
02:56In love with the history of it.
02:58Draw me in.
02:58Yeah, and bogged down by, well, we can't change this because this is how Mickey Mantle did it.
03:03Isn't Bettman that way?
03:05Like, Gary Bettman was the guy who I think I remember getting killed early on of, like, not a hockey
03:09guy.
03:09He used to be regarded as the absolute worst commissioner.
03:12And Manfred was there, too.
03:13He's an NBA guy.
03:13He was under David Stern.
03:15I don't know.
03:16I mean, that could be, like you say, talk to Manfred, Adam Silver.
03:20That may just be what the NBA needs next.
03:22It's just go hot.
03:23Like, the next commissioner needs to be somebody who's not associated with the NBA at all.
03:26Yeah, just doesn't care.
03:27Rob was a labor lawyer.
03:29You know, somebody who just doesn't care about the history of the sport.
03:31We'll see.
03:31I would say there's one really good thing about yesterday's game.
03:34That's got Josh Young going.
03:36Got Josh Young going a little bit.
03:38Other than that, they kind of struggled.
03:39But he had a pretty good game.
03:40Drove the ball.
03:41Big spot.
03:41Runners on.
03:42Runners in scoring position.
03:43He didn't look like he was flailing at anything like he was in the first couple games.
03:49I loved that they put him right back out there.
03:52They gave him a day off.
03:53Mental reset.
03:53Schumacher talked about that in the post.
03:55They gave him a mental reset.
03:57Put him right back out there.
03:58Go get him.
04:00If it works, it works.
04:01If it doesn't, maybe we'll look at another mental reset.
04:03Both teams off today.
04:05Rangers starting McKenzie Gore for the home opener tomorrow against the Reds.
04:10Man, and I'll tell you, this start of theirs got a lot.
04:13You know, I didn't hear anybody asking me, can you help me out with opening day tickets?
04:18But in the last 24 to 48 hours, several requests.
04:23Oh.
04:23Several requests.
04:24I'm like, I got nothing for you.
04:26I don't have any hooks on that.
04:27Josh Hamilton was right.
04:29Baseball town.
04:30I mean, that's the reality.
04:33Aikman's always had the line, and it's the most accurate one.
04:35Dallas is a winner's town.
04:36If you win, though, they show up.
04:37Rangers opening day in Arlington, though, is my probably top FOMO of going to an event.
04:44I would recommend.
04:46I would try going if I didn't have all the friends coming in town, unless, you know,
04:50Spittle and Tim want to give me the suite, which I imagine could be occupied.
04:54Could be occupied.
04:54I would recommend anybody who is thinking about, like, oh, I'm kind of on the fence.
04:59I kind of want to go.
05:00I've never gone before.
05:01I would recommend you go.
05:02But, like, opening day, there's, like, real, I feel like there is, like, magic in the air.
05:06There's a nostalgia.
05:07Yeah.
05:07It's similar to Rudy's dad walking out onto the Notre Dame field for the first time.
05:12There's just an energy about it and an optimism when you start the season.
05:15I like opening day.
05:17One thing I don't like is, obviously, it's so crowded.
05:21It's the most crowded game of the year other than a playoff game.
05:23Yeah.
05:23For the most part.
05:24And you're always, I always like, you know what, let's get the first couple of games out
05:29of the way to work out the kinks of the traffic for this year.
05:31Right.
05:31Let people figure out, oh, I forgot.
05:33This is where you got to go.
05:34Because some of these games, you go to a regular Ranger game on a Wednesday.
05:38They're playing the Brewers, a random team, right?
05:42It's fine.
05:43You get the Dodgers.
05:44You get the Yankees, the Cubs.
05:45It's like amateur hour out there.
05:47Like, nobody's been to a game.
05:48You got all these fans that don't know what they're doing, where they're parking.
05:51You know, let's go, baby.
05:53Let's go.
05:54I got time.
05:55I don't schedule.
05:56I still like the old ballpark more.
05:58Like, I've always been a bigger fan of that.
06:00The thing they get an A plus for is I have found that getting in and out of there for
06:04traffic is way easier at the new ballpark than the old one was.
06:07Like, I think the parking setup at the new ballpark is much, much better.
06:11It is Diamond Cavs here on 105.3 The Fan.
06:14If I didn't have my daughter, like, I'm playing around with possibilities.
06:17If I didn't have my daughter tomorrow, like, I think both kids are out of school.
06:20How many innings?
06:21I can babysit.
06:22Does she get, like, if there's movement, will she be stimulated enough to sit still?
06:27Or some babies, like, there's movement stuff and crowds.
06:30They're just looking around.
06:31No, Bobby's seen it.
06:32She's great.
06:33I'm a big fan.
06:34She didn't like it.
06:35She very much is like, I'm going to do what I want.
06:38And you can tell me, and I'll laugh at you, and then I'm going to go do it.
06:42Yeah.
06:42It's just two games, but so far against the two lefties, and they're two good ones with
06:47Sanchez and Rodgers.
06:48Their batting average is 40 points lower than it is against righties.
06:53They're on bases, 60 points lower, slugging 50, OPS 110, all lower than they are against
06:59right-handed starters after two games.
07:01Very small sample.
07:01Don't even worry about it.
07:02But just thought I'd throw that out there.
07:03I'm looking at the game time app at the ticket prices.
07:06The cheapest I see is 95.
07:0995, 99, and they're just jumping around 135, 150, 163.
07:14This is all in the outfield.
07:15And that $95, that's not the Sean Sharif seats.
07:19That's the Fred Blake seats.
07:21Hey, man.
07:21RJ Choppy got the best seats.
07:23128, 139, 113, 143, 137, 108, 291.
07:30This is not behind home plate.
07:31Not behind, behind.
07:34252, 151, 194.
07:37All right.
07:37Yeah.
07:39Not worried about Evaldi.
07:41He was a little off, missed some spots on his pitch.
07:43A little wild, not terrible.
07:45You know, if he was giving up a lot of walks or hits with two strikes, that would concern
07:48me more, but he wasn't.
07:49He had 10 batters and he got the two strikes on.
07:52He got nine of them out.
07:53I think he was just a little bit off.
07:54I think he was just a little bit off.
07:55He's not sharp yet.
07:57I don't think it's anything remotely.
08:00Remotely, not remotely.
08:0111-4-2 ERA.
08:03Not yet.
08:04Not yet.
08:05Besides, I mean, look, the Phillies are a good team.
08:08Right?
08:08The Phillies are a good team.
08:09Yeah.
08:10Baltimore, they put a lot of money into this team last year.
08:13They got Alonzo in the offseason.
08:16So a lot of people pick them to make the playoffs.
08:19So I'm not going to panic just yet.
08:22If we make it to May and he's still got an ERA above like seven, six, five even.
08:28He's, I feel like he's one who, you know, we'll ask sometimes when somebody's going through
08:32a slump in any sport, we'll be like, are they hurt?
08:34Are they banged up?
08:34I feel like he is the easiest one to tell when he's hurt.
08:37And I don't think for these first two games, he doesn't look hurt.
08:39I think he's just been getting hit.
08:40But like, he's one who usually there's like, there's something wrong with him on the mound
08:45right now.
08:45You can see it physically.
08:46I want to talk to you about the ABS system, the ball strike system.
08:50Did you see this yesterday?
08:51This came out last night.
08:52Baseball quietly admitting to the umpires union that they have it wrong on where the ABS is
08:58picking up balls and strikes.
09:00What?
09:03So they have the ABS system picking up balls and strikes midway through the plate.
09:09So you got your plate as like a half rectangle, half triangle, right?
09:14So it's picking up balls and strikes where the triangle begins.
09:18So the whole front of the plate is not being counted.
09:20So these curve balls that are dropping towards the front of the plate are being called low or
09:28these sliders, right?
09:29They're being called below the zone and they are going to change this.
09:34They're going to keep everything the same.
09:36And that's kind of like a, it's, it's a black guy, a little bit of a black guy, but I
09:40also
09:41it's like, all right, they, they, they, they did it for a week and they're, they're correcting
09:44it, which is good.
09:45I don't know.
09:45Like to me, if that's the way it's being counted, I actually like it the way it's being
09:49counted.
09:49I like it being counted that way.
09:50Cause that was, you remember there, there was the famous Joe Nathan strike out of Ben
09:54Zobrist at the end of the, the raise game where he threw that pitch and it was this biting
09:59curve ball that ended up in the dirt and it was called a strike.
10:02And when I looked on pitch tracks, it like technically did have some, it technically was
10:06straight, but in all reality, you look at it and go like, there's no way that's a strike.
10:09That's never been a strike in the history of the sport.
10:11I agree.
10:11I would rather them count it further back because I don't want the thing to just tip the very
10:17front corner of it on a curve ball that goes down.
10:20That's, that's not a hittable pitch.
10:21Yeah.
10:21We're not in this just for the tip of it.
10:23We want absolutely.
10:25How about Will Clark?
10:27Friend of K and C friend of K and C.
10:29He was on, uh, with, uh, he was on, I was on that segment during the, uh, with Derek Holland.
10:35Was it a thrill?
10:36It was a thrill.
10:37Now, Will does a, uh, a podcast, a no filter network with Eric Burns.
10:41Now, Will is an old school curmudgeon.
10:44Yeah.
10:44He's got a, he's got that Jim Palmer, had that Jim Palmer type reputation.
10:49Yeah.
10:49That is a very old school curmudgeon.
10:51But he's been great on the radio with them.
10:54Amazing.
10:55Yes, he is.
10:56Um, so here's Will talking about.
10:59He's got a face too that projects.
11:01What are you looking at?
11:02What are you looking at?
11:03Yeah.
11:04You know what I mean?
11:04He's got his eyes.
11:05I always felt like his eyes were two different levels.
11:07He's got, he's got RBF.
11:09He's got a little bit of resting B face.
11:11Yeah.
11:11Or did.
11:12Yeah.
11:12I don't know.
11:12He has those crazy eyes that look just crazy.
11:16Yeah.
11:16So here he is on the no filter network talking about, uh, the ABS and he doesn't like it.
11:21I kind of disagree with him here.
11:23You cannot take the human element out of the game.
11:27Can't do it.
11:27What are you going to do?
11:28You're going to put a robot up to hit next.
11:30You know, I don't want to be there with a joystick running the robot.
11:34Come on, man.
11:35I don't want a robot to hit.
11:38I don't want a robot to pitch.
11:40I want a robot to call balls and strikes though.
11:43Because.
11:43You know what?
11:44That's you.
11:45That's you.
11:45I just want it to be right.
11:46That's you.
11:47Because you motherfuckers wanted it right all the time.
11:51You wanted everybody to be absolutely perfect.
11:54And I'm telling you right now.
11:55When I play.
11:58The umpire, yes.
11:59You better swing motherfuckers.
12:01Because that would be that far outside.
12:03Ooh.
12:04They'd bring you up.
12:05Okay.
12:06So don't give me that.
12:08Don't give me that.
12:08I want it right all the time.
12:10I want it right all the time.
12:11F*** you.
12:13Man up.
12:14Hey, guess what?
12:15Guess what?
12:15If you didn't miss the fastball or the breaking ball two pitches earlier, you wouldn't have
12:18got to that point.
12:19No.
12:20Hey.
12:20All of us can't run into Angel Hernandez in the hotel bar and buy him some f***ing beers
12:26to get calls the next day, man.
12:27Angel Hernandez wasn't going to take the beer I buy him.
12:30He took beers, though.
12:32Holy f***.
12:33You played the system better than everybody else.
12:35Man.
12:37I disagree with Will.
12:38Now, I love the fact that he would buy beers for umps and get some calls.
12:44Dan Hurley.
12:44Like, that's game in the system, right?
12:45You got to game the system a little bit.
12:47You know, basically say it's your fault for not being friends with the umpires.
12:52Yeah, look.
12:52That's an old dinosaur.
12:54It's not realistic anymore.
12:55If the only thing you have justification to complain about this system right now is
13:03if they're screwing up the call.
13:05Yeah, it's too accurate.
13:06It is.
13:07Just if it's not right.
13:08Yeah.
13:09Like, no one has complained about that so far.
13:10And as we told Brett Boone yesterday, you old fogies, it's adding some entertainment to
13:19your boring sport.
13:21Drama, man.
13:21They're adding some drama.
13:23Someone has finally mastered the tennis replay.
13:27Yeah.
13:27Someone has finally copied it.
13:29The oohs and ahs in the crowd.
13:31The intrigue.
13:31It's quick, too.
13:32It's lightning fast.
13:34The only thing to complain about is the machine and the technology is getting it wrong.
13:38Otherwise, shut up and enjoy it.
13:41Not you, Will.
13:42In case you come back on 105.3 The Fame.
13:44I think it's fun.
13:45Good lord.
13:45I think that thing is fun.
13:46They go there.
13:47And it's fun when it's like a team is five for five.
13:50Yeah.
13:50And the umps having a bad day.
13:52Yes.
13:52And you know what?
13:53CB Buckner is getting killed with this new system.
13:56He is.
13:57That poor man.
13:57But I'll tell you this.
13:58When it's a quarter of an inch off, I don't see that as an umpire looking bad.
14:04Totally agree.
14:04It's a quarter of an inch off at 100 miles an hour.
14:07Totally agree.
14:08The worst, the most inaccurate challenge reversal we've had so far, Matt Wallner had a 4.8
14:12inch error in judgment.
14:14That's bad.
14:15That's bad.
14:16A third of an inch?
14:18You can't get mad at the umpire for that.
