00:00Against a hitter like Castor right now he's in trouble.
00:11Out of play left side another fastball.
00:1697.4 Gossman you know he knows what inning it is.
00:19He knows what his pitch count is.
00:21He knows he's getting close to the end.
00:23He is finishing with some of the best velocity he's had all day.
00:36Again the 1-2.
00:38Splitter taken low.
00:55Johnston out of second.
00:56And a swing and a miss to get him.
01:00Another runner stranded and strikeout number 10 for Kevin Gossman.
01:30And a half of 2-1.
01:31Has to be a good one.
01:32I have to.
01:32I have to.
01:36I have to.
01:43I have to.
01:47I have to.
01:54I have to.
01:58I have to.
02:59And Sanchez here, bottom six, in a tight game.
03:03The Blue Jays one and the Rockies nothing.
03:06And out of the Colorado pen comes Anthony Sensatella.
03:09Sensatella made his season debut on Sunday against the Marlins.
03:13He went two and two-thirds scoreless with a few strikeouts.
03:15It's his first season debut from the bullpen since 2018.
03:19A long-time starter.
03:22Fastball average around 95 miles per hour.
03:24A lot of fastball slider to these righties.
03:26It makes it the curveball as well.
03:34Starts Kirk with a strike.
03:37Alejandro 0 for 2 on a double play ball and a pop-up.
03:45One run, five hits for the Blue Jays.
03:47No runs on two hits for the Rockies.
03:53And Kevin Gaussman appears to be done for the day.
03:57The way that he is now relaxing, talking, and Tyler Rogers is up in the bullpen.
04:06Boy, that is two outstanding starts for Gaussman.
04:09That is 12 innings, three hits, one run, no walks, and 21 strikeouts.
04:18That's incredible.
04:19That's a pretty good start to a season.
04:21He's just been really dominant, too.
04:23But both lineups that he faced, he really had the meeting out of his hand,
04:27especially with that splitter down in the zone.
04:33Back-to-back starts where he's had a real good feel for that pitch,
04:36and he told me something interesting the other day
04:37where there are some days that he's just got a good feel of it coming off his fingers.
04:42And it's a funny thing.
04:43Some days he doesn't have that, so he's got to battle it.
04:45Maybe go to his fastball more on those days.
04:51Popped up by Kirk.
04:55And Rumpfield in foul territory for the first out.
05:00So with Sensatella in, the day has also come to a close for Kyle Freeland.
05:04And again, a veteran guy, knows what he's doing out there,
05:07and he pitched very well today.
05:08Yeah, the Blue Jays had some chances, but overall he was very good.
05:11I thought the way he mixed his pitches,
05:13he was able to mix in the curveball and the sweeper.
05:16He was using that cutter, really moving the ball all around the zone.
05:19It didn't look like Blue Jays hitters could ever sit in a particular zone and be right.
05:27Clement goes after a high fastball and sends it down the line out of play.
05:51That one more to his liking right down the heart of the plate and he lines it into center.
06:02Just a very smart hitter, he certainly knows what he wants to do up there,
06:06but you're not going to sneak too many fastballs by Ernie Clement.
06:09He will be ready for it. Drives this one into right center.
06:13Now two for three as Sanchez comes up.
06:17Jesus has flied out and was hit by a pitch.
06:31And did he get hit again?
06:33Foul ball.
06:33Foul ball.
06:34Did he swing?
06:35Brian Onora has not made a signal that I...
06:38Now it looks like he just made a little signal for foul ball,
06:42but I didn't see anything initially.
06:43John Schneider wants a little clarity here.
06:51Yeah, bat.
06:53Definitely got the bat.
06:57I don't think Brian Onora saw it because he would have put his hands up.
07:01He was kind of feeling the situation out a little bit.
07:10Addison Barcher may be called into action here.
07:18Foul it off 0-2.
07:23Miles Straw is on deck.
07:27But Warren Schaefer's got his one lefty up.
07:30Brennan Bernardino, we have reached the chess point of the afternoon here
07:34where both managers may be making moves back and forth.
07:37Well, Warren Schaefer knows with the starting lineup of the Blue Jays,
07:40he's got three pretty good left-hand bats on the bench.
07:42Barger looks like he's the first one up.
07:44That's a possibility.
08:06Swung on and missed by Sanchez for round number two.
08:12Good velocity on that four-seam fastball at the bottom of the zone,
08:15and it really just looked like it surprised Sanchez a little bit,
08:18swinging right through it.
08:19And it is Barcher who has come out of the dugout
08:22and is going to be announced into the game as a pinch hitter for Miles Straw.
08:29And now what do the Rockies do?
08:31Sensatella has already faced three batters so they can make a move if they want.
08:36But it looks like they're going to leave the hard throw with a right-hander in there.
08:45Interesting move on many fronts because you know what John Schneider is trying to do?
08:49He's trying to add on to this lead.
08:50Even though he has a 1-0 lead, he probably still wants his best defense in the game.
08:55That includes Miles Straw, but he likes the matchup with his lefty banger against the righty.
08:59If it's a 4-0, I don't think he does this.
09:02He leaves Straw in, but right now because it's so close,
09:04he wants to try to add to that lead.
09:06We've seen this kind of pattern from Schneider over the years.
09:17Straw had a good day.
09:19Two for two.
09:22Interesting though, no lefty for Barcher because Bernardino looked ready.
09:30So much so that he might be sitting down.
09:33Yeah, he sat down now.
09:34The next hitter was also a left-handed batterman, Jimenez.
09:38But after that, it's a whole run of right-handed batters.
09:40So if they didn't go to Bernardino, then they won't for a couple of innings.
09:46Breaking ball there for a strike.
09:48One and one.
09:50And remember the first day when we met with Warren Schaefer, he talked about that.
09:54It's about matchups.
09:55They're doing things differently now.
09:57They'll think a little bit out of the box.
09:59And we see more and more teams doing that now.
10:01Maybe he likes this matchup for some reason.
10:05Hold foul.
10:07That one had some cut on it.
10:09Had it broken his bat.
10:11Got in there just a little too much.
10:16Yeah, there's that cut.
10:17You're right on.
10:23What hurts more, off the end of the bat or when you get sawed off and you break your bat?
10:28Neither is good.
10:30You feel that tingle in your fingers.
10:32You can still...
10:33Do you still have flashbacks to the stinging of the hands?
10:36It happened too much.
10:39There goes the runner.
10:40And it is fouled back by Barger.
10:43Clement got a big jump, but obviously Barger's in a two-strike count,
10:47so he's got a swing to protect himself.
10:49But they weren't paying any attention at all to Ernie over there.
10:53Ernie trying to time it up, and he timed it perfectly.
10:57The benefit of that is if Barger does find a gap or does something down the line, he's scoring.
11:06Cal remains one and two.
11:12Foul up the third baseline.
11:15And you see where they're going.
11:17They're crowding it.
11:18We may see more teams doing that against Barger this year now that they know him a little bit more.
11:24Four seamers in, cutters in.
11:26His strength is the ball a little bit away from him.
11:29More middle in middle out over the plate.
11:32Coming in again.
11:35And got him to elevate out of the zone.
11:37He strikes him out to end the inning.
11:39Another runner left on by the Blue Jays.
11:41And it is still just a one-run lead.
11:48For the first round color.
12:09How the first abnormal order.
12:09So now, I'm going to get back to...
16:32And now Jordan Beck and one of the things of the many that Tyler Rogers does very well
16:37is get ground balls and wouldn't he love a ground ball in this situation.
16:41And Ritter runs very well.
16:52There is the ground ball.
16:55Backhanded by Clement.
16:57Flip to Jimenez to get the out.
17:01Behind the back flip by Ernie Clement to force the lead runner and Tyler Rogers can't help
17:07but smile.
17:09Everybody's going to be smiling about this one.
17:11We keep talking about the middle of the infield defense Jimenez and Clement provide.
17:15This was slow developing but watch Ernie.
17:18Once he backhands this baseball there's only one play.
17:20It's behind the back.
17:24That's called improvising right there.
17:26These guys are fun to watch.
17:28Get used to this all season long.
17:31This will be as good a middle infield combo as there will be in the majors this year.
17:39One of the things the Blue Jays talked to Tyler Rogers about when he was deciding where
17:46he wanted to sign and play was hey the defense here is pretty good and you get a lot of
17:50ground balls.
17:51We think this is a good partnership.
17:55And I think Rogers is buying right now based on what he just saw.
17:59And the best part of that at bat by Jordan Beck that he swung at the first pitch.
18:04So it took away the stolen base opportunity for Ritter if he was thinking about it because of his speed.
18:11And now it keeps the infield intact.
18:15Got a runner now on first up not quite as fast as Ritter.
18:19A couple of strikes on Brett Sullivan.
18:31There's the ground ball rate 98th percentile.
18:34Always among the league leaders in appearances.
18:37Each and every year very efficient because he's always in the strike zone getting quick ground ball outs.
18:43A lot of sinkers to lefties.
18:47Look foul.
18:48We see a shake once in a while from Rogers and I asked him the other day there were a
18:52couple shakes going on.
18:54And it was about his pitches to lefties.
18:56He wasn't quite still trying to get on the same page with Alejandro Kirk.
19:00He does not throw many sliders.
19:01He threw a slider to run field and he drilled into the right field corner.
19:04You're not going to see many sliders to lefties from Rogers coming into that.
19:08There's one.
19:11Missed outside.
19:12That's safer spot though.
19:13And such an unusual look for hitters.
19:16We've talked about it over the course of the spring and into the season.
19:19You just don't see guys throwing from way down there.
19:29So you get a lot of kind of funky swings.
19:35If you're watching this game and watching this pitch you would think it was 97 by the hitters reaction.
19:41But they're just not picking it up.
19:43That ball's actually coming up and it looks like it's coming down and that's why they clip the top of
19:47the baseball so often.
19:58And so it looks pretty tight outside.
19:59Two and two.
20:11He behind the back flip from Ernie Clement to get a much needed out.
20:15He's got a big out here in the
20:16seventh now the two two line
20:21drive base hit Barcher over to
20:25get it but back or guess back
20:27here to make the turn and come
20:28to third and the Rockies have
20:30runners on the corners now with
20:31two down Brett Sullivan get an
20:38opportunity to play today
20:40behind the play with Hunter
20:41Goodman D.H. in his first hit of
20:44the day but he squares this one
20:45up pretty good as it's coming
20:46into him lining it into right
20:52So the tying run is at third with
20:54two outs here in the seventh
20:55inning and the batter is going to
20:56be Brenton Doyle 0 for 2 on the
21:00afternoon and a slider for a
21:08strike and I think if the runner
21:12goes at all you might see
21:14Alejandro Kirk eat the ball not
21:16throw down I would take my
21:18chances with Tyler Rogers against
21:20this hitter not let them try to
21:21steal a run on the base pass not
21:23going and it is popped up back of
21:26first down the line long run
21:29I think it's going to be going to be
21:31get there as he Guerrero and
21:34Barger all got in the vicinity but
21:36no one could quite get there in
21:38time that didn't just have trouble
21:40written all over it it had danger
21:42written all over all three fielders
21:44coming together and it lands among
21:47them but that's a dangerous
21:48dangerous play if just one of them
21:52runs into the other there's a three
21:53guys going on a high rate of speed
22:05a two strike count now on Doyle
22:13and the pitch slider away Tommy
22:24Nance back now sir to second
22:37baseman Clement on to Guerrero to
22:39retire the side Tyler Rogers getting
22:43a couple of ground balls and
22:45getting a little bit of help from
22:47his second baseman what a play by
22:50Ernie Clement of the Blue Jays
22:51still lead
23:06and of course we are going to be
23:08uh
23:16uh
23:17uh
23:18uh
23:21uh
23:22uh
23:23uh
23:26uh
23:27uh
23:30uh
24:28Well here's something perfect for
24:30the ballpark or the rink
24:32be among the first 15,000 fans
24:34of the ballpark Monday April

24:47slash promotions
24:48that'll be a ball game on a
24:49Monday night against the
24:51Boston Red Sox
24:52we'll have to talk to Ernie about
24:54that Ernie loves hockey
24:56has played some hockey huge
24:58Buffalo Sabres fan
25:00and I think he probably I'm
25:02betting Joe he probably thinks
25:03it's one of the coolest things
25:04in the world that there's an
25:06Ernie Clement replica hockey
25:07jersey being given away and
25:08that's pretty cool number one
25:09you've got a jersey with your
25:11name on it but also that it's a
25:12hockey jersey come on get any
25:13better than that
25:16and I don't think he's watching
25:17his double play ball there I
25:18think he's watching on that
25:19bat I'd be watching this double
25:21play ball
25:25Andres Jimenez hits a bouncer
25:26over the mound out to Tovar
25:29who will make the play that's
25:30three players who all played for
25:32Venezuela in the WBC
25:34Sensatella the pitcher Jimenez
25:35the batter
25:36Tovar the infielder all being
25:38involved in the same play
25:40big championship club what a fun
25:43tournament that was to watch
25:44and follow
25:48now George Springer over to
25:50with a walk
26:18one and one on Springer with Tommy
26:20Nance still up so it looks like
26:22Nance is going to get the top of
26:25the eighth inning
26:27Nance pitched on back-to-back day
26:29Saturday and Sunday
26:31he's got a couple off so he'll be
26:33good to go
26:37Louie Varlin threw 30 pitches on
26:39Monday night so maybe he is not
26:41available
26:42Jeff Hoffman threw 15 last night
26:46he should be available but the
26:48Blue Jays have consistently
26:49shown that they they will use
26:52Tommy Nance and leverage
26:52situations if the situation
26:54dictates that they trust him
26:56and he's earned that trust
26:58and I think you say that because
26:59it's a spot for Louie Varlin right
27:01that would be his eighth inning
27:02spot that we've been accustomed to
27:05or it could be Varlin seven
27:07Rogers eight two but sometimes
27:08it depends on what part of the
27:09order is up
27:14and that's a foul tip so Springer
27:16strikes out
27:18George thought maybe his bat hit
27:20the catcher's glove
27:23could hear him say something to
27:25Brian Onora the home plate umpire
27:26but he just went off his bat
27:28and into the catcher's mitt
27:34somehow Sullivan caught that so a
27:36foul tip
27:37for out number two frustrating
27:40he's had a few of those today
27:42those swings right
27:43the decisive
27:47here's Nathan Lucas getting his
27:49first in bat
27:50came on defensively in center field
27:53in the top half of the inning
28:15and it'll be Karos the third baseman
28:17and that's a one two three inning
28:20for Sensatella
28:21it is still one to nothing now
28:23with the end of seven
28:23and time now for a Blue Jays
28:25central update
28:26let's send you to Jamie Campbell
28:28and Kevin Pillar
28:29it is still seven and then
28:29there's a two in the top half of the
28:29quarter of the inning
28:29by Kholye
28:29and I think his O'Khost
28:31most likely to be
28:31more than one of the
28:32good and I think the
28:34I think the reason
28:35bigger or better
28:35I think the
28:35big one of the
28:36of the big ones
28:38to be
28:38and the big ones
28:52especially
28:52as team
28:52and the big ones
28:58are
30:04The Canucks have a big one tonight on Scotiabank Wednesday night hockey there in Denver to face Nathan McKinnon.
30:12And the Avalanche coverage begins with Hockey Central at 8 Eastern, 5 Pacific, right here on Sportsnet.
30:20So you go from the Rockies and the Blue Jays into the Yankees and the Mariners and then into the
30:25Canucks and the Avalanche.
30:27It is still just 1-0.
30:28Again, the Rockies give it to the Blue Jays.
30:30All they can handle here this week, it is Tommy Nance into the game here at the top of the
30:35eighth.
30:35Tommy's had a couple of scoreless outings early this season, both in the Athletic Series.
30:40First time the Rockies have seen him.
30:47Kyle Karros, the number nine hitter, leads it off.
30:52And takes outside, ball one.
30:54Karros today, 0 for 2.
30:57He'll be followed by the leadoff man, Troy Johnston, and then Hunter Goodman, the big power hitter.
31:0231 homers a year ago.
31:08Nance had a 199 ERA in 30 appearances for the Blue Jays last year.
31:15Was on the Division Series roster, was not on the LCS or World Series roster.
31:19Bassett Scherzer came back on.
31:21And that wound up costing him his spot as he falls behind 3-0.
31:25But he has been a really good story.
31:28A guy who was not drafted, Joe, either out of high school or out of college,
31:33and has made his way to the big leagues.
31:35Didn't become a big leaguer until he was 30 years old.
31:42Close as he walks Karros on four pitches.
31:46Well, you get a lot of sliders from Tommy, especially against those right-handers, curveballs as well.
31:50He fell behind 3-0 in those sliders, came back with a fastball, and was not close.
31:55And Pete Walker concerned enough after four pitches to go out to the mound to make sure Nance is all
32:00right.
32:03Well, Trey Johnston has turned into a bit of a dangerous hitter.
32:06He homered yesterday against the Blue Jays.
32:12Or in Game 1 of this series, double last time up in the 6th inning.
32:26Get game-changing internet in Canada's most reliable internet, Rogers Xfinity.
32:31We got you.
32:35A 1-0 lead for the Blue Jays.
32:37Nance just walked Karros, who has left for a pitch runner, Jake McCarthy.
32:4120-plus steals three times in his career.
32:45And now he got the leadoff man, Troy Johnston, in the box.
32:481 for 3.
32:49He doubled in his last at-bat.
32:502 for 3.
32:553 for 3.
32:552 for 3.
32:563 for 3.
32:56Runner goes.
32:57Pitch taken.
32:59Throw down.
33:00Not in time.
33:02McCarthy steals it.
33:05Well, wasting no time.
33:07Not sure Alejandro Kirk had much of a chance there anyway.
33:09He had to rush it, and that throw got airmailed up high to Jimenez.
33:14He has easy bag for McCarthy.
33:20Tying run in scoring position, and nobody out with the top of the order up here for the Rockies.
33:26And Mason Flewharty has gotten up.
33:30Nance still has to face this batter and one more.
33:34Keep that runner close at second base as well.
33:37Jimenez will take care of that.
33:44One and one.
33:51Important for a pitcher when you're looking a runner back at second.
33:54Try to make him stop.
33:55Make his feet stop, and then deliver the ball home.
34:01Curve ball fouled off, fouled off the foot of Johnston.
34:05It looks like one and two.
34:13Backflip.
34:15Wow.
34:18Tommy to use the curve ball more generally to left-handed batters, the slider more to righties, and that one's
34:23coming straight down.
34:23The curve ball's a pitch that's more of a strikeout-type pitch because it's got a lot more break straight
34:27down.
34:27It's tough to keep it in the zone.
34:29He can command the slider better, but yeah, the curve ball is more of a wipeout put-away pitch.
34:45Out in front of Johnston, one and two.
34:54And that's a base hit into left field.
34:57McCarthy is getting the wave, and he will come in to score as the Rockies have tied it.
35:10Another good piece of hitting.
35:12Troy Johnston's becoming a problem.
35:18It's a sinker, and he kind of just shot it the other way.
35:21The ball got real deep on him.
35:22Okamoto way off that back.
35:23That's a good job by Sanchez.
35:25Not trying to do something heroic here, throwing home, keeping the batter runner at first.
35:29So it's a brand-new ballgame here in the eighth inning, and here's Hunter Goodman 0 for 3.
35:55This is popped up back of the plate, and it'll find its way back into the seats.
36:03What have you learned about Goodman watching him over the last three days?
36:06He does not get cheated.
36:08He does a really good job on the breaking pitches, but I think that's where he probably will do more
36:12damage.
36:13But I'm not sure Tommy Nance has the fastball to blow up by him.
36:16So he's a breaking ball hitter, and he's a breaking ball pitcher.
36:20That's advantage Goodman.
36:23Dribbled up the first baseline.
36:25It spins foul.
36:270-2.
36:36That's when your Nance on the mound against a hitter like this, you've got to have your best one now,
36:41and you get ahead 0-2 like that, whether you go curveball or slider.
36:45Keep it out of danger zones because he will do damage with it.
36:49That's what he did to Max Scherzer on an 0-2 curveball yesterday that backed up and stayed inside.
36:530-2 pitch here, bounce third base side foul.
37:07Ryan Ritter a couple of spots away.
37:12Still nobody out.
37:13The Rockies with a walk, a stolen base, and a single to tie the game.
37:190-2 again.
37:20Got it.
37:21That is a good put-away curveball.
37:23Out number one.
37:24That's the one we're talking about right there.
37:26You have to throw a good one against a dangerous hitter, and he did.
37:30Got Goodman to chase.
37:37When you throw your best breaking pitches, usually life is pretty good.
37:41It's when you don't that you can get hurt.
37:44In key situations like that, you need your best.
37:46Now Willie Castro.
37:48A switch hitter.
37:51Fastball low.
37:57Flew Hardy looking on from the bullpen ready if his number is called.
38:20winner Johnson way out there.
38:24The low throw cannot be handled by Jimenez and runner is safe.
38:32this was very slow developing Tommy Nance it took him a while but he did step off the pitching
38:38rubber in time but you'll see when he throws it he almost slings it off balance on the mound
38:43steps back
38:46is almost sliding or losing his footing as he approaches the bag
38:51so a stolen base for Johnston the go-ahead run is in scoring position
38:58and now a curveball bounces away from Kirk and a wild pitch will send Johnston to third
39:10boy a walk a low throw two steals and now the Rockies on the cusp of taking the lead
39:17Kirk just trying to stop that anyway he can't Nance just spike to that curveball straight into the ground
39:24the infield comes in
39:33three balls no strikes
39:40we have not seen Tommy Nance fight his command as a Blue Jay last year seven walks
39:46in thirty one and two thirds innings but he's walked one and he's three you know here
39:53ball four
39:58and looks like John Schneider is going to make the move
40:10so there's the call for Flew Hardy a tough one for Nance today as the Rockies have tied it
40:16and even with righties coming up Schneider is going to go to Flew Hardy
40:21Nance walks a couple here this inning
40:26so we will step aside a 1 1 game here with the Rockies threatening in the top of the eighth
40:55in the next 2 70я
41:02the leading right now is on the back four
41:14is on the mark
41:17oh
42:08The Rockies have tied it and
42:10Mason Flewhardy will inherit a
42:13first and third one out situation
42:15here in the top of the eighth
42:16inning.
42:17Flewhardy's fourth appearance in
42:19five days.
42:20He certainly has been worked and
42:22you've said it it doesn't really
42:23matter lefty righty here Mason can
42:25handle both sides but he just had
42:27to go to another arm and hopefully
42:28he can try to limit the damage
42:30here and try to keep this thing
42:31tight.
42:36Infielders are playing in fairly
42:38shallow right now trying to cut
42:39down the run of the play when it
42:40comes to that as Flewhardy starts
42:43Ezekiel Tovar with a sweeper in
42:45for a strike.
43:07And the Rockies wanted four on the
43:10season.
43:11But would they have a good flight
43:13home for their home opener in
43:14Denver if they could take two out
43:16of three here.
43:20Got it.
43:22Swing and a miss.
43:23And Tovar strikes out on three
43:25pitches.
43:27Well that's what Flewhardy has the
43:29ability to get that swing and miss
43:31and they needed a strikeout right
43:32there and he got one.
43:40Now can he finish it off with Ryan
43:42Ritter coming to the plate.
43:44The middle infielders can back way
43:46up right now.
43:48Okamoto still is even with a bag of
43:50third Guerrero holding on the
43:51runner at first.
43:52First.
43:52First.
44:22I'm sure John Snyder doesn't love
44:24using Flewhardy four times in five
44:26days.
44:27But I think clearly Farland and
44:30Fisher are down today and now they
44:32do have an off day tomorrow.
44:33It's already been announced that
44:34tomorrow's game is postponed and
44:36they'll play Friday instead and
44:38they're kind of in a jam right
44:39here.
44:41And Flewhardy certainly has worked his
44:43way into the circle of trust.
44:48Farland through 30 pitches on Monday.
44:51You think two days later he might be
44:52available but clearly not today.
44:5730,000.
44:5837,280.
45:00And if any of them standing in support of
45:02Flewhardy as Ritter uses his time out.
45:11The 0-2.
45:13Take it down and in.
45:32The 0-2.
45:33Now the 1-2.
45:47The sweeper is the pitch to try to get
45:48Ritter to chase.
45:57He wouldn't chase and it's a full count.
46:01That's the one you're not going to get
46:02is chase as likely as more down and in
46:05because the one down and in is more on
46:06the plate to start.
46:07It looks like it's a strike to the
46:09hitter.
46:09That one was never really a strike.
