00:12Really jumps off the wall, doesn't it?
00:17She's going to fly ball to left field.
00:20She's gone!
00:21Hang it in the loop.

01:28... zorigy, which is not my goal of Bill and you
01:33Wednesday afternoon baseball for you here as the Rockies and the Blue Jays wrap up this series if
01:40the sound sounds a little different today it's school day here at the ballpark thousands and
01:46thousands of young loud fans are here inside Rogers Center today hoping the Blue Jays can
01:53win a series and head to Chicago with a record of five and one the Rockies in their road purples
01:58again they are one and four on the season they'll go home for their home opener after the game today
02:05and a look at manager Warren Schaefer's lineup includes Troy Johnston who hit a home run on Monday
02:12Hunter Goodman hit a home run last night these guys have some pop and they like to run they are
02:18second of the majors on the young season in stolen bases eight in five games something definitely
02:24for all of the Blue Jays beginning with Kevin Gosman to be aware of and we have seen teams take
02:29advantage of Kevin Gosman not holding runners real well something to keep an eye on for sure today
02:33Gosman in the last year of his five-year 110 million dollar deal deal with the Blue Jays and all
02:39four
02:40have been very very good 30 plus starts each season ERA's in the threes and for Kevin at 35 years
02:47old
02:47now turned 35 in January the strikeouts been down a little bit the last couple of years but when I
02:52asked him about his start opening night the splitter was coming off his fingers perfectly and he took
02:58full advantage of athletics hitters defensively behind Gosman this afternoon Davis Schneider gets
03:04his first start in the series he's out in left field the goal Glover Miles Straw will be in for
03:08the
03:08left-handed hitting Dalton Varshow in center and Jesus Sanchez his more familiar territory he's out in
03:14right and the infield is the same Okamoto and Jimenez on the left side Clement and Guerrero on the right
03:20side and Alejandro Kirk back in there after Tyler Heinemann did the chores behind the plate in game
03:29two the Rockies winning Monday night 14 to 5 the Blue Jays with just kind of a clean methodical five
03:36to one
03:36win last night got three in the seven to put it away Max Scherzer was great flew Hardy Fisher Hoffman
03:42did the
03:42rest out of the bullpen as we mentioned the Blue Jays get on a plane go to Chicago after the
03:47game tonight
03:48but just got word about 20 minutes ago tomorrow's game has been postponed already there is bad weather in
03:54Chicago they did have an off day to play with Friday as teams often do on the opening days of
04:01the season their home
04:02opener so no baseball game tomorrow it's now a 2 10 Eastern time start on Friday more on that later
04:10but first Gosman and the Rockies first pitch swinging and Johnston fouls back a fastball and we are underway
04:21Johnston in right field three for eleven with a home run on the young season a former Miami Marlin
04:38second pitch in a Francis of the game
04:38pulls a ground ball to first Guerrero the underhand toss Gosman covering one down
04:48Kevin running his sprint over to cover the bag out a little chuckle with Vlade he will take his time
04:52try to catch his breath now after his first sprint of the day
04:55Now, what can be so funny about that's his routine of 3-1 put out as there is?
04:59Because I think, glad we see him so often go and take it himself.
05:02Right.
05:02But he was going to, but they thought, oh, we'll make Kevin run a little bit here.
05:07Gossman, by the way, a native of Centennial, Colorado.
05:10That is a suburb of Denver.
05:13The Rockies pitcher today, Kyle Freeland, he's a Denver guy as well.
05:21Faceball in for a strike to Hunter Goodman.
05:24Normally the catcher for the Rockies, he is DH-ing today.
05:27As we mentioned, hit a home run in last night's game.
05:29This is probably the most dangerous bat in the Rockies lineup,
05:33although T.J. Rumfield, the rookie first baseman, has had quite a series.
05:41Slider down and away, 1-1.
05:44Kevin will mix in that slider more so to righties,
05:47and it can be an effective pitch at times.
05:49Get some swing and miss with it, but for certain it's his third pitch.
05:53You don't want to get beat against a dangerous hitter like that with that pitch.
05:58His goal is to throw the slider harder than he has in the past.
06:02He just threw another one there, and it caught a lot of the plate.
06:06In the past, typically his slider was 82-83.
06:09He wants it 85 and above.
06:11The first one he threw was.
06:13The second one was more like 84,
06:16but he says the numbers show
06:17there's a big difference in damage done between, say, 82 and 85.
06:21And location, location, location, so important.
06:27Splitter low, two and two.
06:30Among those looking on, Cody Potts.
06:32And again, the unfortunate knee injury suffered a couple of days ago.
06:36John Schneider telling us before the game
06:38that Potts will go to California Monday
06:40to see Dr. Neil Elitrash to evaluate the situation further.
06:46Is there a chance they can avoid surgery?
06:48Is there a chance he can pitch again this season?
06:52All of that is up in the air right now.
06:54Even if it's the best-case scenario,
06:57John Schneider used the term significant
06:59in terms of how long he'll be out,
07:01and you just feel for him.
07:02But just, again, just back to the big leagues
07:04after three years in Japan, one in Korea.
07:07Swing and a miss.
07:08Good spot for the fastball, two down.
07:11And a guy, Joe, he would have started a lot of games,
07:15pitched a lot of innings,
07:16and we only saw a little bit in the spring,
07:18and then two and a third
07:20in his opening start a couple of nights ago.
07:23But you can see there's big league ability in Cody Potts.
07:26Certainly what we saw from him all spring,
07:28and this is the best version of Cody Potts probably ever,
07:31and he knew that coming over,
07:32it earned him a nice contract with the Blue Jays,
07:34but just devastating for us all to see that in his first game.
07:39Two down, here's Willie Castro,
07:40who swings over the top of the splitter.
07:44Castro with second base today,
07:46three for 19 with a couple of doubles on the young season.
07:56And kind of a check swing tapper up the middle.
08:00Andres, he has, what a good play.
08:03Kevin Gaussman, three up, three down.
08:05A couple of ground outs and a strikeout.
08:07Kyle Freeland making his way to the mound.
08:09We'll be ready for two guys.
08:13We're on average.
08:14And that's when we created a little bit?
08:20Apart from the ground?,
08:24we promised the 내일 of the night here.
08:25Are you ready for now?
08:29Under thefounder of the broadvar expense.
08:29There will be the number one
08:30and one will be the number one
09:38Sanchez, he said, I just like the swings.
09:41I like the quality of the bat.
09:43So Sanchez, who has not hit lefties historically very well at all in his career, he'll get a look at
09:50one here this afternoon.
09:51Kyle Freeland is 32 years old.
09:53As you mentioned earlier, Dan, a native of Denver, Colorado.
09:55He is the first-round pick, eighth overall back in 2014.
09:59He is now in his 11th season with the Rockies, pitching at home last year in 31 starts, 5-17.
10:06The 17 losses were the most in Major League Baseball at ARA, just under five.
10:11He's a guy that's not going to walk many.
10:13Blue Jays hitters should be looking for him in the zone.
10:15Pitched into the fifth inning opening day against the Marlins, just allowing two runs, but took a loss.
10:21Yet another one.
10:22I mean, he's got about as much experience pitching at altitude as anybody who's ever played the game.
10:26That is not an easy lot to spend ten years as a Rockies pitcher.
10:31Springer with a couple of home runs in the early going this year.
10:35That's a little high as well, and it's 2-0.
10:43Freeland's career ERA is 4-54, and it's not as different home and road as you might think.
10:534-88 at home, 4-22 on the road.
10:56Everybody knows offense is inflated out in Denver, but you know what?
11:00All those starts, 116 starts at home at a 4-88 ERA.
11:05That's not too bad.
11:06It's tough out there.
11:08Breaking ball catches the corner, 2-2.
11:12He'll use the four-seamer at the top of the zone, and it's that curveball that he'll get a lot
11:16of swing and miss with,
11:17but he's not a big swing and miss pitcher.
11:18He's not a big strikeout pitcher, contact-oriented.
11:21He will get some chase, but that's hard to do with balls in the air in the Mile High City.
11:30It is his second career start here, but Rodgers Center started a couple of years ago,
11:35allowed four runs on seven hits and a 5-0 Rockies loss to the Blue Jays.
11:48Springer swings through a fastball, one down.
11:53For Freeland, defensively behind him for the Rockies.
11:57Jordan Beck is back out in a left field.
11:59Brenton Doyle, the gold glover, in center.
12:00And Trey Johnson gets his third start in right field of the series.
12:05Karos and Tovar on the left side has been a fixture and will be for the Rockies.
12:09Castro and Rumfield on the right.
12:10And Brent Sullivan gets the start behind the plate with Hunter Goodman de-aching.
12:15David Schneider gets a start against a lefty.
12:20Just as he did in the second game of the season with Jeffrey Springs on the mound for the A's.
12:26Schneider went 0 for 3 in that game, but hit a home run.
12:32The next day, he did not start the game, but came in and hit a home run.
12:36So he's 1 for 4 with a homer on the season.
12:46There's that curveball again, in for a strike, one and two.
12:53He will bury that curveball down and into righties like that.
12:56He'll also backdo it on occasion, so they have to cover both sides of the plate.
13:00Works the change up away.
13:02He's got a lot of different shapes and velocities.
13:08A crafty lefty?
13:10Yeah, crafty lefty and the velocity.
13:11He'll be up over 92, 93 for the most part.
13:16How come there are no crafty righties?
13:18Well, there used to be a lot of crafty lefties, but now there are a lot of lefties.
13:21Those are over 97.
13:22Yeah, that's true.
13:2297.
13:23A lot of crafty righties don't last long in the game.
13:26No.
13:26I never say crafty righties.
13:28I just say crafty lefty.
13:29And enough for the fastball to get it by Schneider.
13:32Two down.
13:34Well, there's nothing crafty about what he has done to the first two Blue Jays hitters.
13:38He's just reared back.
13:39Good fastball again.
13:40You see a lot of those secondary pitches, the curveballs and the sweepers, the breaking stuff.
13:45And then a fastball at 92, 93 can probably appear to be 97 to a hitter right by him.
13:53Last night, starter and winner Max Scherzer looking on from the Blue Jays dugout.
13:57Two down bottom of the first here is Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who was described by his manager pregame today as
14:05having been, quote, boringly good so far.
14:09Getting his singles, taking his walks.
14:12Six for 16, a 375 average.
14:15His on-base percentage is over 500.
14:20But Schneider said he's got a pretty good feeling that Vladdy wants to hit one over the wall before the
14:24team gets on the airplane by getting number one out of the way before they head out on the road.
14:29And were you intrigued, too, by the fact that when John was asked that question, he almost just grimaced and
14:34he almost chuckled when you think, like, how's Vladdy?
14:37Is he okay?
14:37Well, yeah, Vladdy hasn't really done anything yet offensively, but he's doing really well.
14:41He just hasn't locked it in in terms of contact and getting his extra base hits.
14:47Pretty good pitch there by Frillian to get out in front one and two on Guerrero.
14:52It's a harder changeup at about 88 miles an hour there.
15:10Ooh, everybody but the man who matters, Brian Onora, thought it was a strike, and they are challenging.
15:18Catcher Brett Sullivan has asked for a challenge.
15:22And it is a ball by the narrowest of margins.
15:30My word.
15:34I mean, it is what it is, right?
15:36The technology is the technology.
15:38Can't argue it.
15:40Not a bad challenge with Guerrero up there.
15:42Can't blame Sullivan.
15:44I think that's the second one we've seen this season by less than a tenth of an inch.
15:52And, you know, even with technology, you could argue maybe it was on the plate.
15:55That's how close it is.
15:56There is a margin for error that that could be.
15:59But those ones, you're right, we just have to live with because you need something to dictate whether it's on
16:04or not.
16:07Guerrero with a grounder out to Tovar at short.
16:11And that'll be that.
16:12Like the Rockies, the Blue Jays go in order in the first.
16:29The Green Lantern team is going to come out as well.
16:30And it's going to be known forizada at full skills.
16:33But just a 12.03 strike.
16:35Your place for kids calling them your rear.
16:38And 163 yards this season, closing on 183.37, which runs third.
16:43And these are the biggest goal.
16:45And with the two of her, the most of you have been on the sixth and 11 of the 60
16:49teams.
16:50With a selection on 293.274.5.
17:20Welcome back to
17:23Rodgers Center. Well, after a productive spring, Kevin Gossman came away feeling ready for the season. Gossman was able to
17:30check off just about everything on his to-do list, including and most notably holding his velocity throughout his spring
17:38outings, a sign that the work he put in to develop a solid foundation was working. Gossman's durability starts with
17:46how he prepares his body and knowing he'll shed weight over six months, he shows up to camp as heavy
17:52as possible and eats
17:53aggressively. He entered the 2025 campaign around 220 pounds and finished closer to 185. I can drop 10 pounds and
18:03gain it back in three days, he told me.
18:04I feel like I move and throw better when I'm a little bit heavier. And it certainly has paid off
18:11in Gossman's season debut, Dan. His last pitch was a fastball that clocked in at 96 miles per hour, one
18:17of his hardest of the game.
18:19Good for him because he does tend to lose weight. I mean, how about the ability to gain or lose?
18:25Gossman said 10 pounds within three days. Most of us are trying to take the weight off during the offseason.
18:30He's trying to put the weight on.
18:32But it is remarkable the year he had last year coming in heavier. And it should never be forgotten. Two
18:40things, really. He's 35 years old. And look at how durable and successful he has been. And he pitched a
18:46month more than just about everybody else in baseball last year. So not only more innings on his arm, but
18:52less time in the offseason to rest, recuperate, start building up again for this year. And he looks just like
18:59he always does.
18:59Yeah, and I think velocity alone, we're going to keep an eye on that because it's not just today or
19:04his next start. It's throughout the month of April in May and see how that impacts him at all. But
19:08he's a guy, too. Like, you might see the odd 90-92. And I've talked to him about it. He'll
19:12do it on purpose. I told him, I look up there. It's like, what is that? And he just chuckles.
19:16Weak contact. Ground ball up the middle. Clement charges and makes a good play.
19:22There's something to be said. And you said crafty righty earlier, but that's what pitching is. Pitching is changing speeds.
19:27And if you're always 94-94-94,
19:30mixing in a 91 on occasion is good. Rear and back and touching 96 is good, just so hitters are
19:35not all over one speed.
19:36Well, does it kind of make one of your pitches into multiple pitches?
19:39Absolutely. Just like moving around different locations.
19:44So one down, here's T.J. Rumfield, who is six for nine with two doubles in the series.
19:51The rookie first baseman.
19:54It's split there and it's 0-1.
19:57Got to be so tough on a young hitter that has not seen a Kevin Gossman splitter.
20:04And that swing right there looked like it.
20:06It's been swinging about very well early in the season here.
20:11And he's not having any fun right now.
20:13Oh, and two.
20:17These are the counts that always intrigue me.
20:19We saw Scherzer knew this last day.
20:21Do you come back with it again a third time?
20:23Or do you elevate a fastball first and try to get him to chase?
20:26And if not, go back down to that pitch.
20:28Two real good splitters down there from Gossman.
20:37Why not throw him another one?
20:38But this time he checked it, says Laz Diaz.
20:42That one a little further off the plate outside.
20:45Did he go?
20:50Boo!
20:52Hey, Laz.
20:54Uh-huh.
20:56John Schneider not happy.
20:59Grounded fair.
21:00Guerrero to Gossman again for out number two.
21:05And they're going to have another little conversation.
21:08Well, that time, Vladi had to flip it.
21:11That ball just missed the first base bag.
21:13So Vladi ranging to his left is able to make the play.
21:16But once again, Gossman rushing over there to cover the bag.
21:19He's going to take his time coming back to the mound
21:23and getting the ball back from Alejandro Kirk.
21:28I always want to get that ball to the pitcher as quickly as possible
21:31so he can catch it and then with his eyes find the base.
21:36Two down.
21:37Here's Jordan Beck.
21:38He is in left field today.
21:40Two for 13 with a couple of doubles so far on the season
21:44as he swings through a slider.
22:03Gossman, and he does it almost exclusively to the righties,
22:06but he's very comfortable so far today with the slider against the Riders.
22:09I think we're going to see maybe even a little more of that this year.
22:12I remember talking to him in spring training,
22:14and he just wants a different look, something going away from them,
22:17different from this four-seamer, and that split her down.
22:26And then 95 on the fastball, foul back.
22:32Kevin turned back after that pitch.
22:34Oftentimes you'll see pitchers after the pitch,
22:36the turnaround, the look up at the scoreboard.
22:38They're picking up not just their velocity,
22:40but some of the metrics of the pitch.
22:47Pulled foul.
22:50Probably more likely the movement than the velocity at this point.
22:55Pitchers, they just speak a different language
22:57than they spoke 10, 20 years ago.
23:00Induced vertical break.
23:01How much it defies gravity?
23:03I mean, this is, pitcher, you'll hear this every day.
23:05My vert was this.
23:06It's just.
23:10And he gets a lot of that arm side movement
23:12on all of his pitches anyway.
23:18Ball one.
23:24Tried to keep that splitter away from him.
23:27Alejandro is actually set up away there.
23:29You don't want that splitter to come down and in
23:30in case you leave it in the zone at all.
23:31That's a little happy zone where you can drop the barrel,
23:34setting up away again.
23:39Just outside.
23:40Gossman thought they had it.
23:42You saw a couple of steps toward the third base dugout.
23:45It's in Kirk's hands, generally, if he wants to challenge it.
23:49And Alejandro didn't.
23:50Looked away to me.
23:51I think Alejandro was set up out there and really brought it back.
23:54That's why you don't let pitchers challenge.
23:56Ha, ha, ha.
23:58Swing it and it is.
23:59How about that split?
24:02Gossman with his second strikeout of the afternoon,
24:04and he has set down all six Rockies he has faced so far here today.
24:14This game.
24:15has a victory.
24:18Yeah.
24:25Yeah.
24:32Yeah.
24:39Yeah.
24:41Yeah.
25:42Download the app for the latest odds.
25:50Welcome back.
25:51Final game between the Rockies and the Blue Jays.
25:53Roof closed.
25:54Of course, again, it is school day here at Rogers Center.
25:57There is a big crowd and every ball put in play could be the most exciting event of the day
26:04if you listen to the kids.
26:05But that's the kind of natural enthusiasm they have.
26:08So everything is fun on kids' day.
26:10They all look like homers.
26:11They do.
26:12It looks like that off the bat of Okamoto.
26:15Kazuma Okamoto with a couple of home runs already.
26:22And he's got a hit in every one of his games.
26:24So he's on a five-game hitting streak.
26:26That's the upside.
26:27The downside is a lot of strikeouts in the early going, which is something that he was not prone to
26:32in Japan.
26:37Outside.
26:38Boy, I'll tell you, the way Brian Onora, when that right arm comes off his knee as he stands up,
26:43it makes me think like he's going to call a strike.
26:46But it's just his way of kind of standing up between pitches.
26:50Got a lag, don't you?
26:55So Okamoto has struck out nine times in 20 at-bats.
26:58And again, that's not who he has been in Japan.
27:00And we're talking about an incredibly small sample size.
27:03But why do you think they've been able to strike him out so much?
27:06Well, I think we're starting to see a little bit more spin.
27:08And it was yesterday's game where it's like he was not picking up the ball real well.
27:11And that's not sure if it's the spin or the pitch or the pitcher.
27:15He hooks this one in the left for a base hit.
27:19And we continue to see him pull fastballs.
27:23Now, this was 93, not 99.
27:25But still, he is hitting fastballs hard.
27:27And it's just interesting that Freeland went to the fastball after a couple of curveballs, a changeup, a sweeper.
27:32He didn't really look like he was on anything.
27:34But he was all over the fastball from Kyle Freeland.
27:39So now he hit in all six games.
27:43Here's Alejandro Kirk.
27:52And Kirk is challenging.
28:01Wow, wow, that got a lot of the play.
28:05So, like the Rockies, the Blue Jays are now down to one challenge.
28:10Again, the earlier in the game, the more you want to be sure.
28:13You always want to have one in your back pocket if you can.
28:17That's really surprising for Alejandro Kirk.
28:19Yeah, the ball entirely within the strike zone.
28:28And the strategy continues to evolve with all teams.
28:32Who's got the green light to challenge?
28:34Who's got the yellow light?
28:35Who's got the red light?
28:36How much leverage is enough leverage?
28:39But first pitch of an at-bat, second inning, probably not a real leverage spot.
28:44And they'll have discussions about that.
28:46I'm sure John Schneider's thinking over there, not a great time.
28:57Grounded to shore.
28:58And the Rockies will turn the double play with ease.
29:07Kyle Freeland can get ground balls.
29:10Wouldn't call him a ground ball pitcher, but this is a change-up.
29:13This time it gets out of hand with just out front a bit,
29:16coming around that baseball and beating it into the turf.
29:18And once that happens, that's an easy two for the Rockies.
29:25So two down and the base is empty for Ernie Clement.
29:29And Clement, who went one for four in last night's game,
29:32had an RBI double in that three-run seven.
29:37He'll see a first-pitch breaking ball for a strike.
29:40Got a couple good breaking balls with the sweeper and the curveball.
29:50Gave him another one, and Clement finds a hole for a two-out base hit.
29:56A lot of pitches early in this ball game.
29:58First time through the lineup to Blue Jays.
30:00Hitters from Kyle Freeland have been away,
30:02so I think the righties can keep looking out there.
30:05This is a breaking ball that was out there as well.
30:08And Ernie gets out and around it, but finds the hole on the left side.
30:14He could have been thinking fastball right there.
30:16You gear him for the fastball,
30:17but that's that adjustability you want in the swing,
30:19and Ernie has that.
30:20So now Jesus Sanchez getting a start against a lefty.
30:27The Blue Jays have enough left-handed batters
30:30where at bare minimum one,
30:32much more likely two and even possibly three
30:34could be in the lineup against left-handed pitching.
30:37Sanchez, as we mentioned,
30:39does not have good numbers last year or career against lefties.
30:43So Nathan Lucas, Addison Barger,
30:45both on the bench at the outset of the game.
30:49Five ball, well hit, deep left,
30:52but caught on the warning track.
30:56Sanchez gives it a ride to the opposite field,
30:59but not quite far enough.
31:23the
31:42we're trying
31:54.
32:38well how about this a world series rematch is just around the corner here at rogers center
32:45the los angeles dodgers will be here monday evening tuesday evening and wednesday afternoon
32:52into one of the most highly anticipated matchups of the season some tickets are still available get them now at
33:00bluejays.com slash tickets that is going to be quite the scene the energy in this building it's not going
33:09to be like october because it's not october but by april standards it's going to be cooking pretty good in
33:15here i think it's going to be a lot of fun for the fans john schneider was asked about the
33:19other day and he just said it's
33:22three more games yes it's the dodgers but he even said that it's great for for the fans of both
33:27teams especially here in toronto with the dodgers coming so early but
33:30he knows the particular day he was asked he said i'm worried about the colorado rockies too i'm worried about
33:35the chicago white sox this weekend he's got other things to take care of first
33:39but we can talk about it absolutely it's for us he didn't tell us we couldn't brett sullivan the backup
33:45catcher getting a start behind the plate today it's a little roller to second
33:50very easy play ernie clement we can tell you what the pitching matchups look like if nothing changes
33:56kevin gosman would start the middle game of the series it looks like it would be max scherzer kevin gosman
34:02dylan cease for the blue jays under the heading of there are no accidents
34:07that this is the way they wanted to line it up design yes and from the dodgers side if nothing
34:14changes
34:14both shohei otani and yoshinobu yamamoto would get a start in that series
34:21looks like scherzer otani in game one gosman yamamoto in game two and it would be cease and emmett sheehan
34:32in game three
34:38couple of strikes on brenton doyle the center fielder number eight hitter for the rockies
34:44see hitters give that slider a little bit of a funny look sometimes because they're still not
34:48really expecting it he's such a forcing fastball splitter pitcher but
34:52that slider is putting another thought into the right-handed hitter's minds
34:580-2 and he got him with a split for his third strikeout of the ball game
35:04the splitter has been absolutely perfect for kevin earlier this season he is bearing it right where he
35:11he wants to just below the strike zone
35:15strikeouts are brought to you by subways new all-dress sauce inspired by ruffles
35:20try it on your favorite sub today
35:24and are blue jays starting pitchers piling up the strikeouts in the early going
35:30a strike to kyle karos
35:35the third baseman for the rockies has started all three games again the son
35:38of longtime big leaguer eric karos who
35:42most of his time in the big leagues who's with the dodgers played a little bit for the cubs and
35:46the a's as well
35:50a bit of a resemblance yeah i think so in the face
36:06fastball and he's late on it one and two
36:11that's right there though and we were talking about karos earlier this morning
36:15if you're going to get to kevin gosman you've got to get to that fastball that he leaves in the
36:19middle of the plate
36:20if you don't you're asking for trouble because you're going to probably get mr splitter after that
36:26going back up there
36:31we've seen times where they've got the splitter on their mind so much they're either late on the fastball
36:35or they'll take a fastball that gets a lot of the plate for strike three
36:38and that's a tougher fastball there to handle but when you get that one in the middle
36:41that might be the only pitch you get to hit and you're at bat
36:44by the way that was ninety six point six from gosman
36:50you get some funny bits of contact too on the splitter
37:05when he is dialed in he is just peppering the bottom of the zone just below the zone that's what
37:10he did in his first start he's been very good in that regard again today feeling good out of his
37:14hand
37:18two and two
37:19if you're watching at home you can see when kevin lifts his leg we can see his hand
37:24from the center field camera you can see the splitter grip
37:28hitter can't see that we love that information
37:34right when it comes out of the glove
37:38fastball
37:38take it at the bottom of the zone for strike three call
37:43ones through the order kevin gosman has been outstanding nine up nine down four strikeouts and not a single ball
37:52hit out of the infield
38:05at the left
38:06key
38:06you
38:13and
38:14you
39:50Max Freed has been outstanding twice.
39:53As Miles Straw is going to drop one into left field for a leadoff base hit here in the third.
40:00The Yankees like the Blue Jays four and one on the young season.
40:04John Carlos standing off to a great start.
40:07The Yankees are going to be the Yankees again for sure.
40:11This ball got in on Miles just enough to drop it in front of the left fielder.
40:19Miles is making the most of his playing time right now.
40:21He's three for four.
40:23David Popkins loves that.
40:24Here's Andres Jimenez who shows bunt and takes ball one.
40:29And there was bunting conversation around Jimenez in John Schneider's office before the game.
40:35And last night, as is often the case, it's up to him sometimes whether he wants to bunt.
40:40I specifically asked John that question.
40:41If he put the bunt on two on, nobody out in the fifth inning.
40:44It was a scoreless game at the time.
40:45He squared to bunt, pulled back, and swung the bat.
40:48But John said, no, that was on his own.
40:50He'll do what he feels best at in the situation.
40:53I disagreed with him because I thought Jimenez is looking pretty good at the plate, strung
40:56in the bat.
40:57Well, I'll take another shot, him and then turning the lineup over.
41:01Bunts through it, throw down to first.
41:03Straw dives back in.
41:05Yeah, the difference here today is you're facing a left-hander, tough left-hander in Freeland,
41:09so maybe he doesn't feel as comfortable at the plate.
41:11But I can say as a left-handed batter, it's never a lot of fun bunting off the left-handed
41:15pitcher either.
41:16So either way, you're kind of up against it.
41:18Jimenez, eight for 18, a 444 average with a triple and a home run.
41:22On the season.
41:33Boy, on school day, they can turn on you in a heartbeat when you throw over to first.
41:38The kids were not happy.
41:45Watch it, foul.
41:47One and two.
41:49Well, this is what I mean about the comfort, too.
41:52This is a good curveball from Freeland, but as a left-handed batter, that ball's coming
41:55from behind you.
41:56Watch him jab the bat at the ball, really push it out there.
41:59What you want to do there is lower your body by bending your knees.
42:03If you squat down there, the bat stays the same and keep it fairly horizontal.
42:07He used the bat to jab down at the ball while in the zone.
42:18And strike three called.
42:20So Jimenez unable to execute, get the bunt down, advance the runner, and that is our number
42:26one.
42:26And that is our number one, George Springer.
42:33Tough at bat.
42:34No matter how you look at it, I think he gave up on that pitch because it looked like he
42:37was at him.
42:38And that's the challenge of facing a lefty as that sweeper comes right back over the
42:42plate.
42:44Now George Springer.
42:49Straw looks like he wants to go over at first.
42:52Now there's a lefty on the mound, and that makes it tougher.
42:55Maybe Straw's just trying to plant the seed in the mind of Freeland.
42:59But he's a little antsy over there.
43:02Freeland much better last year at holding runners.
43:07But you're right, usually you're going to go first move.
43:10It's going to be a guess if you take it off against the left-handed pitcher.
43:12It's going to be a good one here.
43:17Freeland struck Springer out in the first.
43:31Looks like Sullivan there was telling Freeland, hey, you're flying open a little bit.
43:35Touched his shoulder with the ball before he threw it back out to the mound.
43:39Such a common issue for pitchers.
43:41He's pulling off, coming out of their delivery.
43:49Check swing, tap or foul.
43:52And you can see George mumbling to himself.
43:55Someone who prides himself on getting off his A swing more often than just about anybody else.
44:01And so this is not the kind of act that he wants.
44:05Obviously, he was going to hold up and make contact with it.
44:13The appeal didn't go and it's full.
44:17That indecisiveness tells you a lot about the pitcher.
44:20I've often said, don't worry about the radar gun, what the numbers say, what the velocities are.
44:25Watch how the hitter reacts.
44:26And right now, George is not having a comfortable at-bat.
44:31Do they start the runner at three and two?
44:33They do not.
44:36And it is ball four to Springer.
44:43So the Blue Jays have runners at first and second with one out.
44:50I said earlier, he is not going to walk many batters.
44:53Kyle Freeland is going to make you earn your way on.
44:56But a pretty good plate appearance by George there waiting him out.
45:02And a runner in scoring position now.
45:04The first time today either team has had a runner in scoring position.
45:07The Rockies haven't had a runner at all.
45:09So first and second one out, a good opportunity for Davis Schneider, who struck out in the first.
45:22Brian Onora is getting me every time, Joe.
45:24The way he stands up.
45:25And I, you're right, I got a way to beat.
45:28The right arm comes off his right leg.
45:31But is he going up with a strike call or is he just, you know, that's how he steadies himself
45:36as he stands up.
45:41That's a strike.
45:42One and one.
45:43So I think what we're looking for is we're looking for that right arm right away to shoot out right
45:48away.
45:48If your right arm doesn't come right away, that's where he takes you at the body.
45:51Yeah.
46:02Two and one.
46:22Right down the middle, two and two.
46:25See Davis kind of flinched right there, and I think he's thinking he missed a pitch.
46:29But from where that's coming from, it wasn't a strike all the way.
46:33It comes in there at the very last split second.
46:35By then, it's too late to pull the trigger.
46:38Straw at second.
46:39Springer at first.
46:41Line drive.
46:43Base hit.
46:44Straw is getting the wave.
46:46The throw is coming to third.
46:49Springer is safe.
46:51Schneider into second.
46:52One-nothing Blue Jays.
47:02Good piece of hitting by Davis Schneider.
47:05This is a hitter that's not trying to go the other way.
47:09He's got an approach, and he's usually trying to use the big part of the park and pull side.
47:13This gets a little deep on him.
47:14A good swing.
47:15But George Springer does the job with a fantastic slide into third base.
47:21Straw scores easily.
47:22But George reads the flight of the throw.
47:24It's behind him, but he sees the third baseman go to his left.
47:27So that tells him, I've got to go far to my left.
47:30Watch the left arm avoiding the tag from Karros.
47:34Good heads up, baseball.
47:35And this is something we saw consistently from Springer last year.
47:39We talked about what Gaussman's doing at 35.
47:42How about what Springer's doing at 36, running the bases like that?
47:46It gets him 90 feet.
47:48It gets Davis Schneider 90 feet.
47:50And it forces the infield in for the Rockies.
47:54The batter is Guerrero.
48:02Swung on and missed 0-1.
48:04Well, this is the exact situation we were talking about this morning in John Schneider's office
48:08with this open base, and Vlade's been getting locked a couple times in front of Okamoto.
48:12They are choosing to pitch to him.
48:22Way down and ended it hit him.
48:24Vlade says it hit him.
48:25I heard it.
48:27I heard something.
48:28But I don't think Brian Onora made the signal that it hit him.
48:32So if the Blue Jays, they'll have to challenge to get this done.
48:35Vlade's pretty certain they're going to challenge and win this one.
48:38You can almost hear the distinct sound.
48:40And they will challenge.
48:42I always find these tricky, though.
48:45But that was under the gun right there.
48:46That's right, yeah.
48:47John Schneider knew he was running out of time.
48:49Hurried, went to his ears.
48:52Could hear something before it got to the catcher.
48:57So the call is no hit-by-pitch.
48:59Immediately, Guerrero turned in motion to the dugout.
49:02If it didn't hit him, he's not going to say that because he knows that they wouldn't win.
49:10But I think these are the hardest.
49:11Unless it kind of bounces off his shoe and you can see, you know, the seams start going a different
49:16way.
49:19These are going to be really tricky.
49:25We know Vlade does this sometimes when he thinks he wants to challenge him.
49:29But I thought I heard something.
49:30And for a hitter, you don't react that quickly if it doesn't hit you right there at the top of
49:35his foot.
49:35It's hard to tell.
49:36I don't know if there's enough for them to overturn it.
49:40But you don't react like that.
49:42After you do, the call is no return.
49:44It is a hit-by-pitch.
49:48A successful challenge by the Blue Jays.
49:52So remember, ABS challenges, balls and strikes, that's separate from the one challenge you get for the other stuff.
50:00Out or safe, did it hit me or not, fair or foul.
50:02So the Blue Jays retain their challenge.
50:06And now they've got the bases loaded, one out for Kazuma Okamoto.
50:10And based on those two pitches to Vlade, maybe that's what they were doing.
50:13They were just going to bury the cutters and sweepers down and in, see if they can get him to
50:17swing over top of one of them.
50:19He clips him and he's on first, so it's just like intentionally walking him anyway.
50:34Bring the colors of the ballpark to your home with Beauty Tone Paints' Toronto Blue Jays collection.
50:40Only at home hardware and building centers.
50:44So Guerrero's at first, Schneider's at second, Springer's at third.
50:48A run-in already on the Davis Schneider RBI.
50:51Single and the bases are loaded with one out for Kazuma Okamoto, who had a line drive base hit to
50:57left his first time up.
51:01On a fastball, see how Freeland handles him this time.
51:07Breaking ball fouled off.
51:28Takes it high.
51:33Freeland will throw that cutter like that up and away to right.
51:36He's almost trying to backdoor and catch the top of the zone like we saw Chris Bassett do a lot
51:40last year from the right side to left-handed hitters.
51:48In there at the belt.
51:50And Freeland out in front, one and two.
51:52Same pitch, just caught a little more play with it.
52:08There's the big breaking ball down and in, taken by Okamoto, two and two.
52:20Blue Jays looking for a big inning here in the bottom of the third.
52:29He went around, says Chris Siegel down at first.
52:33Okamoto strikes out for out number two.
52:36Pretty steady diet of secondary pitches.
52:39Two of them were the cutters, which are cut fastballs, but they're almost mini sliders.
52:43But he went right back to that curveball.
52:46That's the one pitch that he will get a lot of swings and misses with.
52:51And Okamoto went a little too far.
52:54Freeland trying to minimize the damage.
52:56Two down.
52:57And the batter now is Alejandro Kirk, who grounded into a double play in his first at-bat.
53:09Just game number six of the season, but Kirk is off to a quiet start.
53:14He is one for 13.
53:15The one was a big one, though.
53:18That home run in the ninth inning in the second game of the season that extended it, or forced, extra
53:23innings.
53:26Alejandro's a bit more of an upright hitter at times, and his move can get pretty big forward toward the
53:31pitcher.
53:31John Schneider mentioned the other day, sometimes you can get a little big, a little long.
53:35When you do that, you work around the baseball.
53:43Broken back pop-up caught by the second baseman, Castro.
53:47And that ends the inning.
53:49The Blue Jays leave them loaded.
53:51Did they get just the one run in the inning?
53:53That run, courtesy of Davis Schneider, with an opposite field base hit to bring in a mile strong.
53:591-0 at the end of three.
54:02Haven't changed, hadn't much to say.
54:04But man, I still think them catch...
