00:01Are you ready for the Leeds City Council local election on Thursday 7th May?
00:06The first step in the voting process is being registered to vote.
00:10The deadline to do so is midnight on Monday 20th April.
00:14This includes anyone who has moved home and needs to register at their new address.
00:19Registration takes five minutes and can be completed online.
00:22The next step is choosing which method to use to vote,
00:25either in person, by post or by appointing someone trusted to vote on your behalf,
00:30known as a proxy vote.
00:32Under new government rules, all registered postal voters
00:36needed to have reapplied by renewing their details by the end of January.
00:40Leeds City Council has since contacted all of those who didn't respond by that deadline
00:45with guidance on their options.
00:47Anyone previously registered to vote by post who didn't complete that renewal in time
00:52and wishes to vote via post again will need to reapply before 5pm on Tuesday 21st April.
00:59For those voting in person on Election Day,
01:02the election will continue the national system of a valid form of voter ID
01:06needing to be shown at the polling station.
01:10Residents are being asked to check the details on their poll cards when they arrive
01:14to ensure that they're correct,
01:15and also to note the location of their polling station, which may have changed.
01:20The results for the election should be confirmed by Friday 8th May,
01:24and the Leeds Elections team can be contacted to address any issues beforehand.
