00:04What's the best part about being an animal care specialist at the San Antonio Zoo?
00:08Lion training. How do you train a lion? Very carefully.
00:13Today we're going to start our training with Tao.
00:15Tao is our dominant male and he's the dad of the three cubs.
00:18So the behavior that Tao knows, Tao can open his mouth,
00:21Tao can stand up, he can put his paws on the fence,
00:24and we use these behaviors to be able to check out his health.
00:26We open his mouth, we can check out his teeth and make sure his mouth looks good.
00:30We put his claws on the fence and we can check out his claws and make sure his pads and
00:33his feet look good.
00:34And we check his belly as well when he's standing up.
00:36Mom and Dad love to do training but the cubs also do as well.
00:38The cubs are very active, they like to run around, they love to play.
00:42They also love to come up and they love to work with the trainers.
00:45They're very excited to show off the behaviors that they have learned.
00:47It's a great way to keep their minds active and stimulated throughout the day.
00:51We have five lions in this pride and they all have different personalities.
00:55Mom is Sarabi, she's very protective, she likes to watch over her kids.
00:59She's also the dominant top dog in the group.
01:02The best part of my job is to be able to work up close with such strong and powerful animals.
01:07They really are the kings of the African savannah and the kings of the San Antonio Zoo.
01:11So, we'll see you next time.
01:12I'll be right back.
01:12I'll see you next time.
01:12Bye.
01:13Bye.
01:13Bye.
01:14Bye.
01:15Bye.
