00:08Have you ever heard the saying, busy as a beaver?
00:12Let me introduce you to Justine.
00:14She's a busy North American beaver here at the San Diego Zoo.
00:19Justine takes part in our Camp Critter Show.
00:28It's so cool to see a beaver in action.
00:35Beavers live in ponds, lakes, streams and rivers, so they do a lot of swimming.
00:46Beavers look a bit awkward when they walk, but just watch Justine swim.
00:52To swim like a beaver, we would need to put on flippers.
00:57No other animal has a tail quite like a beaver's tail.
01:00It has large scales instead of hair.
01:02And what does her tail remind you of?
01:04A paddle?
01:05An oar?
01:06A beaver uses its tail like a rudder to help steer through water.
01:14Justine has two sets of eyelids, one that's clear.
01:17It helps her see when she's swimming underwater.
01:19Pretty neat!
01:24Justine has small front feet with five fingers.
01:26She can use her fingers just like we use our hands.
01:32Her back feet are much larger.
01:34What else do you notice that's different about them?
01:36They're webbed to help her swim.
01:45She can stay underwater for up to 15 minutes.
01:48Beavers have a thick coat of fur.
01:50It's oily and waterproof to keep their skin dry while swimming.
01:56Justine loves to have her back scratched.
01:58That feels good.
02:00Smile, Justine.
02:01Yikes!
02:02Her teeth are orange.
02:03That's because they don't have enamel covering them like we do.
02:06But that's okay.
02:07And guess what?
02:08Her teeth keep growing and growing.
02:10So Justine has to keep chewing and gnawing so her teeth don't get too long for her mouth.
02:23It's fun to watch her eat lettuce.
02:26But beavers really like to eat fresh wood.
02:29Yummy!
02:30We give Justine a variety of fresh cut logs.
02:32Her favorite wood is from a mulberry tree.
02:35With her sharp, strong teeth, she chews off all the bark.
02:39Justine is always busy.
02:41Swimming, chewing her wood, or moving branches and wood strips here and there.
02:48She's one busy beaver.
02:49We're so glad she's a part of our zoo family.
03:05We'll see you next time.
03:05We'll see you next time.
