As fuel prices rise daily and some pumps run dry many Canberrans have been continuing to feel great pain at the hip pocket. Costs rose for small businesses and even real estate agents felt the strain from the war in Iran and the Middle East. And there was mixed opinion over the federal government's changes to fuel excise.

00:01Hoping for a reprieve from rising fuel costs, but trying to make do in the meantime.
00:07It's really hard. It's not just a black and white decision. You don't really want to impact customers.
00:12With a fleet of diesel delivery vans to run, employees who are feeling pain at the pump,
00:17and costs being passed on by suppliers and distributors,
00:21this Canberra business is being squeezed from several directions.
00:25We'll get stock less frequently. It means the impact on us is we have to hold more stock.
00:29And while new fuel levies are appearing, other costs are hidden in invoices.
00:34You've got to go through each individual line item on an invoice to see where those costs might be coming
00:38through.
00:38I feel financially worried.
00:42Because of the fuel prices, we just can't afford to go away.
00:45I think it sucks. I'm a support worker. I do a lot of driving.
00:48Even the property sector is beginning to feel the ripple effect,
00:51with less speculation from buyers and more cancelled inspections.
00:56People are not going to drive around for 12 hours on a Saturday,
00:58looking at as many properties as they possibly can.
01:01There could be a return to more online sale activity.
01:04And while the peak group for agents wants longer term certainty,
01:07they welcome the federal government's cuts to the fuel excise.
01:11It's not going to solve anything, but it's certainly a step in the right direction.
01:14Too late, too small.
01:15Yeah, it'll make a bit of a difference. I can buy a bit more food.
01:20Now they've changed it. I think it's good.
01:22I think the broader issue is can we get supply, you know, into April.
01:26Canberra livelihoods at the mercy of a conflict overseas.
