00:11I've been in emergency relief for a number of years now
00:14and I have not seen a surge like this since COVID.
00:16The St Vincent de Paul Society has seen a sudden surge in callers,
00:20many reaching out for the first time,
00:22struggling to cope with the soaring cost of petrol.
00:25And with a fleet of more than 60 vehicles,
00:27the charity is feeling the pressure too.
00:30There's an increased cost of fuel for us as an organisation
00:33and that's bearable at the moment,
00:36but if that continues that becomes a significant issue.
00:40Jason Chalker runs a team of gardeners
00:42and he says some are considering a temporary price increase
00:45to cover rising fuel expenses.
00:48Everyone's in the same boat unfortunately,
00:50everyone's out there trying to make a living supporting their family
00:53so it's definitely tough times.
00:55The cost of filling up has got businesses altering their operations as well.

01:03so you're not having to drive as far, things like that.
01:07But yeah, definitely feels a little bit like COVID again.

01:13whether Federal Parliament should return to COVID-style operations
01:16to limit the need to travel to and from the capital.
01:19It's getting to a point where it's extremely concerning
01:22and we need to lead by example and show the Australian people that
01:27if we can do it, you can do it too.

01:32may be turning to public transport to get around.
01:35Last week there were nearly 400,000 trips on buses and light rail,
01:39the highest number of any week so far this year.
