The Orioles are 2-2 to start the season and the sky is DEFINITELY NOT falling, but there have been some early season concerns so what is the bigger concern - the starters or the lineup?
Transcript
00:00Well there, Craig Galvinas says, no, I'm not concerned right now.
00:05Chris Bassett last night goes four innings, giving up four, four to third innings, giving
00:09up four runs, six hits, three strikeouts, four walks.
00:12Again, it looks like we're having a hard time, Jeremy, finding the zone.
00:16Not only is he just always walking, but who was it last week, over the weekend?
00:23I think it was Boz.
00:24He was constantly behind in the count.
00:26Yeah, that was him.
00:27Constantly on Sunday.
00:29His start overall, people don't want to hear, wasn't as bad if you look deeper in it,
00:33but again, he kept getting behind on hitters.
00:362-1, 3-1, 2-1, 2-1, and you can't live that way.
00:40And we see the same thing last night with Bassett.
00:43He actually had a ton of walks, had four of them, 100 pitches, and you can't get through
00:49five innings.
00:51That's because you felt like he was nibbling a little bit last night.
00:56I don't think that with Bassett.
00:57I just think maybe he was off.
00:58Maybe he just didn't have it.
00:59And that's the problem.
01:01That's why, like, when we talked about opening day, right, Trevor Rodgers, he did not have
01:06his, that's what's incredible, is the way he pitched and not having his best stuff.
01:10Right.
01:11He didn't.
01:11He just wasn't there.
01:12And it happens from time to time where a pitcher comes out and they can't find their fastball
01:17or can't locate it, can't throw their curveball for a strike.
01:19And then it can make you one-dimensional depending on what your arsenal is.
01:23Chris Bassett could forget how to throw five pitches and I think he's still got six more.
01:27I don't think location is usually an issue for him, but last night seemed a little off.
01:30It seemed very off.
01:31410-583-1057.
01:33That's the number.
01:35Didn't I have that problem with the bullpen?
01:37With four starters through.
01:39Four.
01:41I already saw somebody say, bring Kramer back.
01:44Your thoughts on the rotation thus far?
01:48Man, like, again, I've said this time and time again, this rotation's built for the regular
01:52season.
01:52I think the top three in your rotation are fantastic.
01:56I think Chris Bassett is what he is.
01:58He's a guy that's going to give you 170 innings and come in.
02:01He's going to win a bunch of games for you.
02:02He's a vet that you need in that clubhouse for the pitchers.
02:05And then on top of it, to me, Zach Eflin, it's like, if he returns the form of what he
02:09was two years ago, you're all in.
02:12But if he doesn't, you got Kramer sitting there.
02:14Someone asked me yesterday, was I surprised they're using five starters?
02:17And I pointed out something that I said last week on the show.
02:20I think five starters, using five starters early in the season when you don't need them,
02:27because tonight, Braddish can pitch on regular rest.
02:33He can pitch on regular rest.
02:34I think using five starters during a time when you don't need them is your way of limiting
02:40Braddish.
02:41I think that's the natural way of limiting them.
02:43Depending on if there's off days or something else, you might see somebody get skipped as
02:46well.
02:46Right.
02:47And that might be Eflin.
02:48But you don't need five starters right now.
02:49No.
02:50But I think they use it.
02:51And I think when you get to the point where you need five, that might be when they use
02:55six.
02:55Don't you say, like, if you take them, if you look at the situation that the Orioles are
03:00in right now with the starters, if it gets to a point in April where you have a chance
03:05to limit how much Kyle Braddish is pitching at the beginning of the year, you do it.
03:09Why?
03:09Especially if you're going to have them on a pitch limit.
03:11Why pump the brakes at the end where you can control that at the beginning?
03:15Start it now.
03:16Get them used to it now.
03:17Because I feel like this, Jeremy, when you do it standard, regular rest, regular rest,
03:22regular rest.
03:23And all of a sudden, July and August, you want to pump the brakes and start limiting
03:27guys.
03:28That's when you take them out of sorts.
03:29I think if you get them used to that at the beginning of the season, then later on, there's
03:34no adjustment to make.
03:35Right now, are you more concerned about pitching or hitting?
03:38Pitching.
03:39See, I'm hitting.
03:40You are?
03:40Look, I think the lineup's going to be fine.
03:43That's why I'm not concerned.
03:44But we saw last year what they did against left-handed pitching and how they looked.
03:47And it's still, look, it is.
03:48It's four games.
03:49This is what we do.
03:50We have to talk about it, but it's four games.
03:52I don't know who Boz is.
03:55I don't know today who Bassett is.
03:57I think I know who Boz is.
03:59I don't quite know who post-back surgery Eflin is.
04:03So until I know who those guys are, I'm not concerned about the first two dudes.
04:08I'm not.
04:09I think the back three have the potential of being really, really good.
04:14But I think they are.
04:16I don't know it.
04:17The hitters?
04:18Ah, man, I'm not worried about them guys.
04:20I'm not worried about Gunnar Henderson.
04:21I'm not worried about Alonzo.
04:22I think Rushman looks to be back to be Rushman.
04:26The only thing I'm worried about with O'Neal, whether he can stay healthy or not.
04:28I'm not worried about those guys.
04:30I have no concern about them whatsoever.
04:32They are who they are.
04:34See, and I feel like when we look at the way that the lineup's been, and you go back to
04:39last year,
04:39I was reading an article that somebody wrote, and I think it holds some validity,
04:43but I need to see it happen throughout the season,
04:45talking about just because you added two right-handed bats to your lineup,
04:48and significant right-handed bats, right, with Taylor Ward, Tito Ward,
04:52and, of course, you know, the addition of Pete Alonzo,
04:56said it's not necessarily going to fix all your left-handed problems that this team had for whatever reason.
05:02And you just have to let it play out and see.
05:04Four games is not enough of a sample size, but after last season,
05:07you've got a lot of aggressive fans that are upset already.
05:11I think Coach Boone said it best.
05:14Offensive like Novocain, give it time.
05:19It'll kick in.
05:21It's not a bad line.
05:25Coach Boone said that in Remember the Titans.
05:26Yeah.
05:27Denzel Washington.
05:28It's not a bad line.
05:28It's like Novocain, man.
05:30Give it some time.
05:31It'll kick in.
05:32Yeah, and again, I think you're going to see.
05:34Do you have any issues with what they've done lineup-wise through four games?
05:38I like Gunnar batting first, but I'm not upset with him batting second.
05:42If he's batting third or fourth, then we got problems.
05:44Where does Holiday hit when he comes back?
05:48I think Holiday might bat towards the—you've got to keep him up at the top of the order, don't you?
05:53Do you think Holiday leads off against righties and Ward leads off against lefties?
05:57I don't think they're going to play the lefty-righty leadoff spot.
06:00I think leadoff is leadoff.
06:02I think Jackson leads off or bats second.
06:06Either you flip Gunnar the first and bats Jackson Holiday second or the other way around.
06:11But I think he bats one or two.
06:13You can't go from batting leadoff last year to all of a sudden now you're some no-man's land in
06:19the spot.
06:19Is that your way of saying you can't make oranges beat peaches?
06:22Yeah.
06:23Okay.
06:23That's what it sounded like to me, Ray.
06:24That's what it is.
06:25You know what I mean?
06:25Because if you squeeze oranges, it doesn't make peach juice.
06:28Ray, my toe's in the bottle, Ray.
06:32Ray in his boom-boom room.
06:34Antonio and Rosedale.
06:35What's up, man?
06:37Good morning.
06:37How are you guys doing?
06:38Doing well.
06:39How are you?
06:40Good.
06:40Happy Taco Tuesday, guys.
06:42Happy Taco Tuesday to you, too, my friend.
06:45Two and two.
06:46Is this the start you hope the oils would have?
06:49When will they start hitting?
06:51And you guys have a wonderful day.
06:53You have a wonderful day, too.
06:54No, I was hoping to go 4-0.
06:57So not what I expected.
06:59Not what I wanted.
07:00Two and two?
07:04I'm not worried about two and two.
07:05Yeah, I don't know that you're going to see the front end of the Pirates.
07:07Maybe you do on Sunday once you get there.
07:10Is it a three-game or four-game set?
07:11It was a three-game, right?
07:12Three.
07:12Off Thursday.
07:13So I think you end up missing skeins, maybe, or maybe you catch them on Sunday.
07:18We ain't missing them.
07:19No?
07:20No, I don't miss them.
07:21We ain't pitching them.
07:22I'm just thinking about this weekend.
07:24I don't miss them.
07:25The one thing with the Pirates is you know you're going to get good starting pitching from them.
07:29You do.
07:29We've got three or four guys that I think a lot of teams would like to have.
07:32Let me see what we got here.
07:34Friday, it looks like Braddus versus Keller.
07:41Saturday, it looks like Boz versus, what's his name?
07:46The, uh, which one?
07:48Mojzinski?
07:49Oh, yeah.
07:50Is it M-L?
07:51Yeah.
07:52Mojzinski?
07:53Yeah.
07:53I think the L is silent.
07:55And then, well, why are you putting it in there?
07:56I don't know.
07:57It's the only player in Major League Baseball history whose last name starts with M-L.
08:02Because it didn't make any sense.
08:04Who put that name together?
08:05And on Sunday, it's Bassett versus Ashcraft.
08:09So, Ashcraft is, eh, he's okay.
08:14And then he goes Monday to Chicago.
08:17So, right now, it's scheduled to be Eric Fetty versus Zac Eflin.
08:22On Monday?
08:23Next Monday.
08:24Oh, so that's, you're, oh, you're not seeing Breggy.
08:27You're seeing, you're seeing the White Sox?
08:29Breggy.
08:30No, White Sox.
08:31I'm not going to the Cubs.
08:32Cubs, Cubs.
08:33I was going to ask.
08:34Breggy comes to Baltimore.
08:35I was going to ask you to say hi to Breggy for me.
08:37Breggy comes to Baltimore.
08:38Tell him DeRosa says I love you.
08:39Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
