00:27family ron at fishing friends manitoba had a great conversation sounds like they got a bunch of kids
00:31out fishing last weekend really good to talk to him then we called a couple bars and had some nice
00:35quick chats with some folks so it was a fun little episode sorry about the uh airplane noise you're

01:27on lake harriet here in minneapolis so we did manage to talk to one other person who was ice fishing

01:39i'll be out there tomorrow yeah i run a i run a guiding business as well on lake winnipeg

03:00what do you well i am a guide i'm a licensed outfitter for certain bodies of water in manitoba
03:07yeah oh cool yeah sweet how's it been going you doing the ice fishing thing um well actually i'm
03:14was just pulling in my ice tent um just put it in the basement just a couple minutes ago
03:23i was out at the kids fish ice derby on the weekend and they didn't need my tent so i'm
03:29putting it away
03:30and uh i'm going out wednesday morning onto lake wig and pig but i'm going to be staying in a
03:36nice
03:37castle so i don't need my tent now wait when you say castle do you mean it's made out of
03:41ice or do
03:42you just mean a big old house it's a um a brand of uh i gotcha i gotcha um basically
03:52uh a winter cabin
03:54yeah um portable portable to go on the ice and they they actually i don't know if you're familiar
04:02with them the wheels can be raised up and down so the trailer actually sits right on the ice and
04:08nice you have you have holes inside there that you drill through and you fish from inside your
04:15trailer yeah in the comfort of your living room basically right do you got a heater basically yeah
04:20yeah that's nice how many weekends out of the winter do you generally get to fish
04:27in a typical year okay um theoretically i could fish any weekend but i don't get out as much as
04:36i
04:37could or should probably yeah so and i'm sorry we have airplanes every once in a while here so
04:44if you hear an airplane i apologize yeah we're right by the airport no no problem
04:49but the ice uh the lake conditions have been poor this year uh because uh we had a little bit
05:00of a
05:00late freeze and then it dumped a lot of snow oh sure so uh it's uh truck traffic on the
05:09lake is pretty well
05:11down to zero except for where uh some of the outfitters have gotten together and cleared
05:19paths sure how many inches are you talking about how thick um well on the river yesterday the water
05:28the ice was about 24 i think up on the lake it's more in the 30 inch range not as
05:37as thick as it has
05:39been some years but perfectly capable of holding up for traffic but
05:46like i say the uh with the way the wind's been blowing the snow around in that there's drifts and
05:52if you yeah your vehicle punches through the depth drift then you have to dig all the snow out from
05:58underneath your truck to to get it moving again yeah yeah well that's a lot of ice actually we were
06:04complaining because we had to drill through 18 inches here by hand that took us a while yeah but oh
06:09well yeah 18 inches is next to nothing up here good for you guys and uh how did the the
06:18fishing with the
06:19kids go well very well um i haven't seen the numbers yet but i'm saying we had around 600 kids
06:30holy
06:31smoke wow that's a lot so yeah it was uh if you google kid fish manitoba uh there's there's quite
06:41a
06:41bit of information it's a fundraiser for the cancer care and the children's uh hospital oh that's good
06:49nice did you guys catch some good fish everybody get lucky every kid gets a fish right well yeah pretty
06:57well uh every kid gets a prize they get free rods when they uh come in through the door or
07:03the front
07:04gate um and there's lots of prizes they have dances and everything else they throw prizes out for that
07:12stuff and uh there's kids games on the ice all day long well i guess the games kids games start
07:21about nine o'clock in the morning and finish up about two i think and what i was i wasn't
07:26involved
07:27in that part sure and do you set some tip ups up while you're out there or well some people
07:34use tip
07:34ups most of them uh they just you know um either hold their rod or put it in a holder
07:42and keep an eye on
07:43it yeah what kinds of fish were you catching anybody get get a nice walleye or anything or what how'd
07:51it go
07:51well we did get a few decent walleye nothing great uh i think 26 and a half was the largest
07:58that's pretty big two 25s and then uh 17s 18s and 19s but the the top fish was a 26
08:09and a half
08:11that actually that sounds pretty good if you're talking about a bunch of fish a bunch of two-foot
08:17walleye that sounds pretty darn good unless you i guess you guys got some big ones yeah there's
08:22nothing uh it's not uncommon to pull in the 30 and 30 up to 32 even 34 inches uh out
08:30of the lake
08:31we were on the river so uh you you don't get as many of the big walleyes but you do
08:36get some
08:40yeah we haven't seen a single fish we've been sitting here for an hour i never catch fish
08:45we're ice fishing right now and uh it's mostly to just get out in the sun you know you got
08:49some
08:50good weather there today right yeah today again is pretty mild yesterday was pretty mild so yeah
08:57whereabouts are you minneapolis we're fishing oh yeah in minneapolis on lake harriet yeah there's a lot
09:04of people out there used to some of the people came up uh fargo moorhead area used to come up
09:11and
09:11uh fish with the walleye anglers association sure of manitoba up here yeah so we had a
09:19a cross-border unofficial derby okay more of a fun get together than anything
09:27we were fishing in canoe about 30 years ago i was at conard's cabin and we were just catching
09:32perch and i hooked into something i thought i hooked a rock when i pulled that walleye up
09:37i think at this point in time remember i grabbed the line and then the line broke
09:40yep i made a rookie mistake i got excited and it flared its skills and i think that
09:46that walleye i think was about 74 inches 74 yeah no and what i'm saying is that it's grown a
09:52few
09:52inches every year since then yeah no i'm lying you got me but that's the joke is that every year
09:57it has
09:58put on a couple inches i think what we're starting oh yeah okay so we never got that many years
10:03ago that
10:04many years ago when you caught it it was probably a 19 inch or then yeah i think you might
10:08be right
10:09but i had never seen one that big before you know two three hundred pounds somewhere in there we've
10:14also exaggerated okay sure sure yeah so it has gotten bigger over the years but at the time it was
10:20a
10:20decent one you would you would have scoffed at it if you think that's big you should come and catch
10:24some of our catfish oh no and we do catch catfish i've heard about some this summer yeah red river's
10:30good
10:30right yep red river that's where we catch a lot right in the lockport cellcork area right is it
10:38mostly channel do you have flathead too or is it mostly channels what do you got mostly channel yeah
10:43no we love catching catfish down here you probably got us beat in that regard too my biggest channel
10:48catfish is maybe 12 15 pounds you guys probably got some monsters up there but maybe someday we're
10:57gonna get to winnipeg at some point that's one of my life goals well we'll have to come on up
11:03and
11:04we can uh get you out on some catfish yeah now we got some connections yeah i'm convinced there's no
11:10fish in this lake tom yeah nothing nothing going on i just what was your name again
11:18ron ron i just happen to be very bad at ice fishing so sometimes the fishes don't want to
11:25cooperate yeah i think just directly underneath us there are no fish if we were if we were more
11:30invested we would move to a different spot yeah don't you need one of those fish finders those
11:34little radar things you can drop it in and see if there's anything and then move to a different spot
11:39if you're in the wrong place i'm kind of anti yeah well like the live scope for example comes in
11:44handy
11:45for a lot of it yeah um or even just the flasher unit will tell you if there's something moving
11:52it
11:52won't tell you much more than that but you can you can judge by the the height they're off the
11:59bottom
11:59what kind of fish they might be yeah yeah you know the life scopes tell you a lot more actually

12:07that would be i'm becoming kind of anti-technology like we've been canceling our social media accounts
12:15we've been uh i just canceled prime deleted you heard of quit gpt you heard of this yeah connor no
12:21quit gpt i don't know ron if you're on chat gpt but it might be time to quit no i
12:27i've stayed away
12:27from the chat gpt good i know it's there but uh yeah well as you say there's a little bit
12:34too much
12:35iffy um take social media stuff out there and the uh oh the ai stuff there's so much crap coming
12:45out now yeah and not enough people doing what we're doing right this moment just having a
12:50regular conversation making friends so i think it got a nibble here i think kind of got a nibble
12:55yeah something something you've felt it yeah i wonder if your minnow's gone we'll have to check

16:37is it president's day or something uh in manitoba we celebrate louis real day uh throughout the rest of

16:58wrote a rebellion back in the day kind of carved uh carved an area out for the metis people here
