Seafood lovers are being urged to buy local this easter as the industry struggles with surging fuel costs. Shelves are full ahead of the holiday rush, but price hikes are on the horizon.

00:02Every catch is now worth its weight in gold for fishermen like Ryan Starkey.
00:07He fears if fuel prices keep rising, he'll have to stay anchored and customers will miss out.
00:13It's not just about price, it's are we going to be able to even go to work.
00:18The Federal Government's temporary halving of the fuel excise will decrease diesel and petrol prices,
00:24but the industry says operational costs are still too high.
00:28I think the 26 cents means very little.
00:32Particularly for large trawlers that guzzle up to 40,000 litres of fuel at sea each trip.
00:38So you can do your maths, it's well over $100,000 of fuel just to send them out to fish
00:44now.
00:45There is some good news, consumers are being reassured there's enough seafood to keep prices steady for Easter.
00:51I think everybody's going to wear less profit, we still need to catch fish.
00:56The industry recognises that consumers are also feeling the cost of living squeeze,
01:01but they're asking for their support to ensure the long term survival of Australian caught and processed seafood.
01:09But if fuel prices don't drop and supply is consumed, there's a warning about how high prices will rise after
01:15Easter.
01:16We want to produce affordable seafood for the community and this is really, really impacting that opportunity to do so.
