00:00And I don't know if it's circumstantial yet or not
00:02because it's only been three games,
00:03but the Giants look frozen.
00:06Have they challenged any calls yet?
00:09I'm sure they have.
00:11Yeah, Patrick Bailey did a couple.
00:12I think he was right.
00:14When he was on defense, though, right?
00:16Yes, as the catcher.
00:17Yeah, yeah.
00:18And as much as we all say that,
00:20oh, the ABS is going to take away Bailey's ability
00:23because he won't have to frame anymore,
00:24his ability might be like the challenge ability.
00:28Even better.
00:28Yeah.
00:29If he's that good at knowing what's a strike and what's not.
00:32No doubt.
00:33And I think in spring training,
00:34the Giants sort of started feeling that way.
00:36They're like, oh, this actually might make him even more powerful.
00:40Right.
00:41But, yeah, I don't know.
00:43We certainly haven't seen much in the way of their batters doing it,
00:47but that's kind of what I mean.
00:48I haven't seen a lot of challenges.
00:50I haven't seen a lot of hits.
00:52We have not seen any pinch hits.
00:54We have not seen anyone different in the starting lineup.
00:59Yes, different spot in the order,
01:00but it's been the same eight or same nine,
01:04even with the DH,
01:06for all four games,
01:07and the pinch hitters have not appeared yet.
01:11Like, there's been a pinch runner one time.
01:13That's basically what we've gotten so far.
01:16So I also wonder about that with Tony Vitello because it could be that that
01:23just wasn't the right thing to do,
01:25or it could be that he's feeling gun shy.
01:27But he doesn't want to make the wrong move because,
01:32um,
01:32don't rock the boat.
01:33I don't know.
01:34Yeah.
01:35But at the same time,
01:36like you've got big league players here who are on the roster who haven't
01:40had an at bat yet.
01:41Right.
01:41Might want to get Encarnacion in a bat.
01:43Yeah.
01:44That was kind of my takeaway from the weekend of the long,
01:47you know,
01:47three games in five days is you kind of want to get everybody involved,
01:51you know,
01:52and maybe it's the high school coaching me,
01:53but you play like a Saturday volleyball tournament and you've got a
01:56guaranteed four matches.
01:58You want to make sure that everybody gets at least a little bit,
02:01a little bit of a taste.
02:02And that's kind of the way I look at the early part of a baseball season,
02:05at least get these guys in there and,
02:07and get them in at bat.
02:09And that way,
02:09when you go to San Diego tonight,
02:11you can at least feel like you're a part of the proceedings.
02:14I mean,
02:15you played Wednesday and if you're Encarnacion,
02:17you sat and then you sat Thursday,
02:19you didn't play.
02:20And then you sat Friday and Saturday.
02:22And then yesterday you didn't play and you get on a plane and now it's
02:24Monday.
02:25And I mean,
02:26did you even bring your bat on the trip?
02:28Can you name the four giants players who are offensive players,
02:35but don't start games?
02:37Can you name those four giants?
02:39No.
02:40What's wrong with you?
02:42There's all of a pinch runner guy and Encarnacion who I guess could be a
02:50DH of some sort or a first baseman or an outfielder.
02:53There has to be Susack,
02:56the catcher.
02:57Yep.
02:58Cause he's rule five and you know,
02:59didn't want to give him back to the Hays.
03:00And the last one is that stuff.
03:03You know it.
03:04It's not Matos because Matos got traded to the Brewers today.
03:08Not Gilbert because he's a little bit banged up and he's in triple A.
03:11And that ball is getting Schmidt on and he's starting in the lineup.
03:15And it's,
03:16it's not Fitzgerald.
03:18He got,
03:18did he get DFA'd?
03:19He got DFA'd today.
03:20Yeah.
03:21Also did not make the team though.
03:22Right.
03:23I'm drawing a blank.
03:24It's gotta be one of those outfielder guys.
03:26Not an outfielder,
03:26it's an infielder.
03:27Does that help?
03:28I guess.
03:29Okay.
03:29It should,
03:30but it doesn't.
03:31His name is Christian Koss.
03:33Oh,
03:34Christian Koss.
03:35Right.
03:35So anyway,
03:36those four guys,
03:38zero at bats.
03:40Right.
03:40Zero at bats.
03:42And all of,
03:42I got to run around a little bit.
03:44So this is,
03:45Vitello said,
03:46and I,
03:47what day was this?
03:48Was this after Friday's game or Saturday's game?
03:50I don't know what sound you're referring to.
03:52Vitello talking about pinch running for Adamas,
03:54but the overall bench usage.
03:56After Saturday's game.
03:56Okay.
03:57So this is after all three games.
03:58Here's what Vitello said.
03:59Just circumstance.
04:00I mean,
04:01I'd like to be aggressive with J.O.
04:03being involved in the game and,
04:04and try and get creative and,
04:06and get to our opportunities offensively.
04:08But that was just circumstance.
04:10I mean,
04:11if for some reason we moved the ball forward,
04:13you know,
04:14the at bat before then,
04:15you know,
04:15hold out.
04:16I mean,
04:16we would have done it for Bader if he would have got on base,
04:19but he's our fastest guy and you don't want any regrets over the course of the game.
04:23I don't care how it goes.
04:24You usually at least have one or two in there and they're tough to live with.
04:27So I'd hate to have a play at the plate as fast of a runner as Willie is.
04:31I know he doesn't want to come out of the game.
04:32You'd hate to have a regret that you got the fastest guy I've been around sitting in the dugout.
04:37Okay.
04:37So that's why he pinch ran for Adamas.
04:40But that literally was the only moment that any of those guys have gotten into the game so far.
04:46And I was reading a report that Adamas looked a little bit puzzled by the move.
04:50And I don't know if he was annoyed by it,
04:52but yeah,
04:53Tony just mentioned it.
04:54He wants to stay in the game.
04:55The guy plays every single game every single year,
04:58it seems.
04:59And so he's not used to coming out.
05:01And I think that's part of it too,
05:02for Tony Vitello being new,
05:04it's figuring out when and how to take out some of these vets who fancy themselves as guys who play
05:10162.
05:11Well,
05:11this is something that I wonder if Buster,
05:14and maybe he did,
05:14I wonder if Buster thought about this,
05:17but the decisions that do get made by Tony Vitello as he's managed his first three games in the bigs.
05:26Like,
05:26let's be real.
05:27If I'm Adamas,
05:28I'm Chapman,
05:29if I'm Devers,
05:31and I'm like,
05:31I got as many managerial wins in the bigs as you do.
05:35Skip.
05:37How does it go when one of them doesn't like a decision?
05:43They're all human.
05:44Let's not act like everybody,
05:46you know what I mean?
05:47Kyle Shanahan is super respected,
05:49but we can find a few and have found a few athletes in the NFL who are like that freaking
05:53guy.
05:53Yep.
05:54He told me one thing,
05:55whatever,
05:55you know what I mean?
05:56Steve Kerr,
05:57same thing.
05:57Sure.
05:58100%.
05:58So,
05:59like,
06:00there are going to be decisions where the players on the field are thinking to themselves,
06:04I don't like that decision.
06:06Do they respect it when it's coming from Tony Vitello,
06:11who has never done this before,
06:13but boy,
06:14he can give a speech?
06:16Fire and brimstone.
06:18That's,
06:19I worry about that.
06:20And maybe that,
06:22like,
06:22they can get past that quickly if they start winning baseball games.
06:26But,
06:27man,
06:27you got a lot of dudes on this team who've got a lot more major league games under their belt
06:33than their manager does.
06:34Well,
06:34they all do.
06:35That's,
06:35well,
06:36sure.
06:36But your point is,
06:37is well taken.
06:38And I think that respect has to be earned and it has to be earned over time.
06:43And so if you're Willie Adamas and you're not used to being pinch run four and it doesn't work out
06:48and you're 0-3,
06:49it doesn't mean that automatically,
06:51well,
06:51I don't respect the manager,
06:52but it's something where it's going to be hard to,
06:55you know,
06:55get through that.
06:56And this is where Tony has a great communicator from all,
07:00all reports.
07:01Everyone who talks to him and everyone who's worked with him says that's his number one skill.
07:04That's where I think Steve Kerr separates himself from other coaches where he's going to tell you,
07:10you may not like it.
07:11He's going to tell you what your role is and what,
07:14you know,
07:14he thinks is going to happen for you going forward.
07:16And if you can communicate that up front,
07:19then as a player,
07:20you kind of have to respect it at least,
07:22you know,
07:22on the surface for a while.
07:24I mean,
07:24yeah,
07:24for a while,
07:25like we're in the honeymoon phase.
07:26Now we're in the honeymoon phase now.
07:29And I don't think anything,
07:30you know,
07:31pinch run for Willie one time.
07:32Okay.
07:33But how does this look in another two weeks?
07:36Let's get three,
07:38four or five series into the season.
07:39What's your record look like?
07:41What decisions are being made?
07:43And is Tony on a daily basis addressing what he perceives as his mistakes or what is he going to
07:52share in the media about players and what they may be struggling through and what he says in front of
07:59a microphone might not be the same way that a player sees it.
08:03I just,
08:03I don't think we're anywhere near there yet,
08:07but you've sort of set up a scenario where you're more vulnerable to that than you would be if you
08:15had made another choice.
08:16And I'm okay with that right now.
08:18I think everybody's okay with it right now,
08:21but you can skip the line on those topics just for bleeps and giggles.
08:28Like if Boach was your manager,
08:30you would,
08:31that wouldn't even be a thing.
08:32Nobody would even think about that.
08:34But now you have to,
08:36you got to sort of get by that.
08:39Tony probably has to earn their respect.
08:41And I don't know if he has yet.
08:43How could he?
08:44I mean,
08:44it's been three games and it's been just a couple of months.
08:47And I was thinking about last year with Willie Adamas,
08:50where he was really struggling and he likes to play every single day.
08:54And Bob Melvin went to him and said,
08:56we're going to give you a day because you're scuffling.
08:59And Adamas was reluctant.
09:01He actually came on with us after that and expressed that he was,
09:04you know,
09:04a little bit frustrated by that because he wants to play every day.
09:08And then he came out after a day off and started to rake.
09:11But Bob Melvin,
09:12having been in the majors for,
09:14you know,
09:1430 or 40 years as a player and a skipper,
09:17he has that built in respect.
09:18So decisions like that for Tony Vitello,
09:21they're going to be harder to make because he doesn't have those pelts on the wall.
