00:00We're in the middle of Warrior season.
00:01We had a game last night.
00:02We've got a game tonight.
00:04Also, the 49ers are in the midst of a 6-3 run.
00:07The trade deadline was yesterday.
00:09Their quarterback remains hurt.
00:10Their WR1 remains hurt.
00:12Their two best defensive players are both on IR.
00:15It's a lot going on.
00:17So why are we about to talk about something Giants-related?
00:21Because let's be real.
00:23This new dude has caught everybody's attention.
00:27Tony Vitello, the new manager of the Giants.
00:32He was on our show yesterday.
00:34Now, I'm trying to figure this out because we're going to bring Lucas and Grandy into this conversation.
00:39Because I'm trying to just, like, chill and have a night.
00:42You know what I mean?
00:43Trying to be off the clock at 8.30 at night.
00:47And we're bing-bonging back and forth between Chase Center and Oracle Park for the Ballpark Back Nine last night.
00:54And the text message comes in from one Lucas Alexander, who has been all in on Tony Vitello from the jump.
01:04And now, cold feet.
01:08Second thoughts.
01:09All kinds of discomfort.
01:12Now, you guys referenced something he said on the show yesterday when he answered a question that Dibbs asked him about his baseball philosophy.
01:23Before I play the answer, I want everybody to really go behind the curtain for a second.
01:30When we do a big interview on the show, when it's Kerr, when it's Vitello, when it's something like that, it's a whole, like, what we're going to talk about is a collaboration sensation.
01:42It's well said, and it's a buck.
01:43Okay?
01:44Right.
01:44Cha-ching!
01:45We talk about what we're going to talk about.
01:48Right.
01:48And the guys will weigh in.
01:50What about that?
01:51And sometimes...
01:51And in that moment...
01:52In that moment...
01:53Lucas jumped into my ear and said, hey, why don't you ask him?
01:56Oh, Grandy did?
01:57It was Grandy.
01:58I get you too confused.
01:59Well, here's...
02:00Let me...
02:00Way, way behind the curtain even further.
02:02You're like my children.
02:03Grandy...
02:03I don't know who I hate more.
02:05Grandy hopped into my ear when I was about to go.
02:07He's like, ask him about the baseball philosophy.
02:10And you know what I did?
02:11I was like a...
02:12I was like a 42-year-old pitcher.
02:14Waved him off.
02:15Ooh.
02:16Waved him off.
02:17So then I'm just sitting there, and the very next...
02:20Next question's Dan Dibley, and you asked it.
02:25And I'm like, Grandy went fishing.
02:27He went to the other side of the table.
02:28I thought it was a good question.
02:30It was.
02:30I just had something else I wanted to get out there first.
02:33We were going to...
02:33I was going to do it.
02:34I'm not saying I had nothing.
02:35No.
02:36But when he threw that in my ear, I'm like, you know what?
02:38That's interesting.
02:38That's a good question.
02:39Especially because I've been thinking about Toronto.
02:42Toronto's a team...
02:42That's a great question.
02:43They just refused to strike out.
02:45We're going to foul off every pitch.
02:46Right.
02:46And we're going to annoy you, and you're going to make a mistake, and then we're going
02:50to hit it where you aren't, and they made it all the way to Game 7 doing that.
02:53Exactly.
02:53So I thought, like, in light of Toronto, what's your philosophy, dog?
02:57It's a good question.
02:58Thank you, Grandy.
02:59The problem was, it wasn't until 8.30 last night that I found out...
03:03Well, that's a great question.
03:04Thank you, Chris.
03:05...that Lucas and Grandy in the other room did not like his answer.
03:11They didn't yike it.
03:14I listened to it.
03:16I was just like, okay.
03:17It's a little campy.
03:19Right.
03:19I get it.
03:20You listen to it.
03:22You guys make up your mind.
03:24Is this full of crap?
03:26Is this a BS answer?
03:29The question is, I'll whittle it down.
03:32What is your baseball philosophy?
03:36What's your go-to as far as putting a team together?
03:40Here's his answer.
03:42Whatever's going to win.
03:43A lot of things for me are overly simple.
03:45I really don't like losing.
03:47I haven't grasped onto the idea of you even having a good season means 60 losses.
03:52That's going to take a change in some temperament and some other things.
03:56I like when the whole team, for us, it would be meeting in left field or right field.
04:00I assume it'll be now in the dugout at the conclusion of a game.
04:04There's no better feeling when everybody, the group, got what the group wanted.
04:07Sometimes that means a guy had to pitch outside of his normal role or maybe a guy had to lay
04:13down a bunt.
04:14I'm not, again, bunting.
04:16If it helps win, I'm all for it.
04:18But I don't feel like I'm drastic one way or the other.
04:21I hate the feeling of not being prepared and I hate the feeling of not competing.
04:27It is a true challenge to compete every inning of every game, no matter what level you're
04:32at.
04:32But when you're playing that many games, it becomes an even greater challenge.
04:36And so that's part of my role is to make sure our guys are kept in check as it relates
04:41to preparing and competing the right way.
04:43So there's Tony's answer.
04:45And in that answer was a healthy dose of both you and me.
04:50Totally.
04:50You know, giving him a little, yeah, yeah, go, Tony.
04:55But essentially his philosophy is whatever works.
05:00Yeah.
05:01Whatever wins.
05:02I like the philosophy.
05:03You like it.
05:04I mean, I like it because, yes, your philosophy is score more than the other guy.
05:09Okay.
05:10Right.
05:10But is that like lip service?
05:14It's not a philosophy.
05:16Correct.
05:16It's a goal.
05:18Like your philosophy will be either, you know, we're going to go ahead and try to hit the
05:21ball over the fence every swing, strikeouts be damned, or we're going to do everything
05:26we can to fight for that 90 feet, one base at a time, or somewhere in between.
05:31That's kind of what we were looking for, or what Grandy was looking for when he used me
05:35as a puppet.
05:36Apparently, apparently while that answer was going on, and you and I are like, yeah, Tony,
05:41yeah, win all the games.
05:43These two are in the other room, like, what was that old, the Muppet characters that are
05:48up in the balcony?
05:49Oh, oh, oh, oh.
05:51What were their names?
05:52I can't remember their names, but.
05:54These two are like Siskel and Ebert in the other room, just ticked off.
05:58They're like, this is crap.
05:59What was going on?
06:00What is it?
06:01What was your guys' reaction to this?
06:04It brought up a lot of things to me, where, okay, let me set the stage, which you mentioned
06:11early, which is, I knew very little, as much as most Giants fans, about Tony Vitello.
06:17And so I was very much looking forward to his introductory press conference last week,
06:21where it's like, finally I get to learn who this guy is.
06:24And we did get to hear some of that, but also in that press conference, I did learn one
06:30thing about him, which is, he doesn't exactly answer questions directly.
06:35And a lot of the times he'll just kind of talk, and he may go down this winding road
06:40and tell a funny story or whatever, which was, it was endearing to me in that first viewing
06:48of who he is.
06:49And in this answer, and again, after that press conference, all in.
06:53He has some juice, and this is the kind of guy I would want to play for.
06:58And so that set the stage for our interview, very excited, again, excited to learn even
07:03more about him.
07:04And this specifically was a question to learn who he is as a baseball mind, because the
07:10reason we asked it is we don't really know.
07:11Like, what kind of baseball does Tennessee Volunteer Baseball play?
07:15I have no idea.
07:15I don't think most people out here know.
07:18And are like, is he a power guy?
07:20Is he a work the count?
07:21Is he a grind the pitcher?
07:23Like, you could say a million different things, just to, in our mind, learn what you believe
07:30in.
07:30What kind of baseball do you want your team to play?
07:33And his answer was, I just want to win.
07:35And it felt like a total skate-around moment.
07:40And I don't know, it just made me laugh.
07:43And it made me go back to that moment of, well, he doesn't really answer questions.
07:47And it just gave me a little bit of a, is this guy full of it a little bit?
07:53Is there a little bit of something?
07:55I don't mind if people in professional sports are full of themselves.
07:58I think that that's most of them.
07:59Well, not full of themselves.
08:01Just a little full of it.
08:02Full of it.
08:02You know, it's super fascinating that you would bring this up also.
08:05And by the way, Grandy, do you concur?
08:07Do you concur?
08:08Yeah, basically.
08:09I wanted to learn what kind, the style of baseball I can expect the Giants to play under
08:14Tony Vitello.
08:15And all he said was, we're going to prepare, we're going to compete, and gosh darn it, I
08:21hope we're going to win.
08:22Like, okay, I knew that.
08:23Tell me something I don't know.
08:24So let us be devil's advocate for just a sec on this, because it's interesting.
08:31I was reading some post-press conference comments from Kipe, and Dwayne Kiper literally said
08:38the number one thing he was looking for in this situation, he's like, I want to know if
08:43this guy's full of BS.
08:44And he goes, and I've been around a lot of BS in my career, and that guy is not a BS-er.
08:51That was Dwayne Kiper's quote, but apparently it was enough to get by Kipe, but not Lucas
08:57and Grandy.
08:58Until yesterday.
08:59Until, so, here, devil's advocate, A, what if he does have a fully spreadsheeted baseball
09:08philosophy, but he don't want to share it publicly?
09:11What about that?
09:12What's the upside to that?
09:13I think that that happens in press conferences a lot.
09:17And what if his fully spreadsheeted baseball philosophy does not fit with what their current
09:23roster is?
09:23And that, to me, was my takeaway from the back and forth we had on the text that earlier,
09:28his philosophy may be to hit and run and steal bases and be athletic, and you don't have
09:33that on your roster.
09:34So, you may have to adapt what your philosophy is in the short term to what your personnel
09:40is.
09:40And without you and I even discussing it, that was essentially going to be my second point.
09:44Like, doesn't...
09:45So, Kyle Shanahan sometimes has Matt Ryan, and then sometimes has Jimmy Garoppolo.
09:51And you're going to play...
09:53Like, sometimes you're going to go to the NFC Championship game and throw 35 times, and
09:58sometimes you'll throw eight because of your personnel.
10:02Is that fair?
10:05It's totally fair.
10:07That said, I didn't get that sense of authenticity from him.
10:12And maybe that was a risk he was willing to take in not answering the question.
10:15To me, it's still...
10:19I don't really care.
10:20Again, I don't care what his strategy is.
10:22I just want to hear something.
10:24Literally anything.
10:25And the fact that he didn't give us an ounce of what he actually believes in terms of baseball,
10:30it just made me back off my fully all-in stance on this guy.
10:33And it honestly...
10:35Like, the only thing I want out of a manager is that I want to like him and I want to believe
10:39in him as a fan.
10:41And I was all-in until yesterday, and this is the only thing.
10:44We had an amazing interview, and 99% of it was...
10:49I enjoyed it.
10:50That's not the only thing.
10:51There was something else he said on a different show that you...
10:53Right.
10:54Our interview, I was saying.
10:55Our interview was great.
10:56And that was the only thing that raised a red flag in my opinion.
10:59Okay.
11:00There's a second piece to this that I'm going to get to in just a sec.
11:03Could I read Boxing Gerson, work injury attorney's text line?
11:06Coming down your road, Lucas.
11:09707.
11:11I love Tony's answer.
11:13Lucas needs to chill.
11:15For strategy, in November, he hasn't even met his team.
11:19And these two want the game plan.
11:21They need to have a seat.
11:23Not a game plan.
11:24I will let you know.
11:24They are sitting.
11:25Both of you are sitting right now.
11:27But, okay.
11:30Let's see.
11:33Oh, okay.
11:34There was also...
11:359-2-5.
11:38We're going to meet in left field or the dugout or however that goes.
11:42Are the guys going to be talked to like they're 18?
11:45That was another...
11:46Like, are we having oranges and going to left field?
11:48Let's all circle up after the game.
11:49Okay.
11:50Here's Box time.
11:50Yeah, we're going to circle up and we're going to talk about...
11:53Everybody, I want you to have a rose and a thorn from today's game.
11:56We'll go around the circle.
11:57Rafi, we'll start with yours.
11:59What was your rose from today's game?
12:02Well, I doubled off the wall.
12:03What was your thorn?
12:04You made me play first base.
12:06Good, everyone.
12:07Let's clap for Rafi.
12:08Who's next?
12:09Hey, Rafi.
12:10Can I add something here?
12:11Yes, of course you can.
12:12The other part of this, and I think it's also in that answer that we're talking about
12:17right now, but you guys also asked early in the interview yesterday, and he was asked
12:22similar questions at the intro presser last week, essentially like questions that he
12:28doesn't know the answer to.
12:30And I was expecting this guy who is just this very outward and he's this strong,
12:36big personality just to come in with like ultra confidence.
12:39I'm the man.
12:40I'm going to lead us to greatness.
12:42And you guys asked him, how big of a jump is it from college to MLB?
12:46And he was like, you know, frankly, I don't know.
12:49I don't know.
12:49I don't know if it's a giant jump.
12:51I don't know if it's a small jump.
12:52I kind of wanted him.
12:54This is who I thought he was going to be, and he still could ultimately be, but I wanted
12:58him to come in and just be like, you know what?
13:00It might be a gigantic jump, but I'm freaking confident that I'm ready for this.
13:04And I can make that jump.
13:05No doubt about it.
13:06I hear you at the same time.
13:08Dibs knows this.
13:09I think that I don't know is the most powerful phrase in the English language.
13:13Because honestly, he doesn't know.
13:15Yeah.
13:15Like there's no, you can't know what you don't know.
13:17And I think in successful businesses, you have to be willing to acknowledge as you build
13:26something that there's a bunch of stuff out there that you don't know, even if you think
13:31you do.
13:32And I don't think like, you're not getting any vibes.
13:34Like he feels like he's not ready for it.
13:37Are you?
13:38Like, I think he feels ready for the challenge.
13:41No, I think he does.
13:42Yeah.
13:42I just, I don't know.
13:43The guy that you just handpicked to be the manager and he, the way he answered a lot of
13:48the questions, his first introduction to the fan base was, not sure.
13:54That isn't, that isn't, doesn't inspire a ton of confidence in me is all I'll say.
13:59To me, it doesn't detract from the confidence because honestly, that is the honest and correct
14:05answer.
14:05Like how big of a jump is it?
14:07Well, I've never played in the bigs.
14:08I've never coached or managed in the bigs.
14:11I never played minor league baseball.
14:13I'm coming off a year where we played 60 some odd games.
14:17So yeah, 73 games last year.
14:19I don't really know how big of a jump it is and I'm going to find out.
