00:06Welcome to MojoPlays! Today we're counting down our picks for the most memorable, useful,
00:11and iconic summon creatures from the Final Fantasy universe.
00:22Before we begin, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:28the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:3120. Asura
00:39One running theme throughout this list will be how certain summon entities appear within various
00:44Final Fantasy games, often in different capacities. World mythologies also possess a huge influence
00:50on the Final Fantasy summon pantheon, including the multi-limbed Asura. Players will encounter
00:56Asura both as an enemy and as a summoned ally, and it's in the latter capacity where the summon
01:01acts as an agent of healing. This stands in stark contrast to Asura's mythological origins,
01:06where these creatures are typically described as demonic enemies of the benevolent Hindu gods
01:11known as Davis.
01:1619. Magus Sisters
01:25Players may have had to wait until Final Fantasy X for the Magus Sisters to appear as an optional summoned
01:31Aeon, but it was definitely worth the delay. This trio of magic users possess an antagonistic history
01:37within the Final Fantasy universe, dating back to their first appearance in Final Fantasy IV.
01:42Their delta attack was a triple threat, bad time back then, but their Final Fantasy X iteration
01:46allows the party to ask the Magus Sisters for an assist. Granted, the actual options for attacks
01:52are limited to humble suggestions, but the results are a powerful and valuable aid for players choosing
01:58to ask Cindy, Sandy, and Mindy for some help.
02:0918. Eden
02:19It is absolutely not easy for players to acquire Eden as a guardian force during her debut appearance
02:26in Final Fantasy VIII. That's because it's first necessary to defeat the optional but insanely
02:31difficult powerboss Ultima Weapon. Successfully achieving this aim, however, will result in what's
02:37arguably the most useful and powerful GF in the entirety of Final Fantasy VIII. Her animation is
02:43epic in scope, while her non-elemental damage breaks through even the hardiest enemy defensive with ease.
02:49This guardian forces moniker may represent the Biblical Garden of Paradise, but facing off against
02:54Eden is guaranteed to be anything but pleasant.
03:0417. Cactuar
03:10A word to the wise, never judge a book by its cover, especially when it comes to the not-so
03:16-humble Cactuar.
03:17This otherwise adorable creature is something of a Final Fantasy mascot, while also doubling as one of
03:23the franchise's most notoriously difficult enemies. This history is partially why being able to summon
03:29Cactuar in games like Final Fantasy VIII becomes crucial to achieving an easy victory.
03:34Their 1,000 needles attack deals unblockable multiplayer damage to enemies, while the junction
03:39system of Final Fantasy VIII enables players to boost their luck and evasion stats.
03:4816. Sylph
03:55Summon monsters throughout the Final Fantasy franchise tend to hang their collective hats
04:00upon specific abilities tethered to their design. The Sylph is a great example of this, since these
04:05spirits tend to utilize various forms of the Whispering Wind attacks throughout their in-game
04:10appearances. The Final Fantasy IV iteration of the Sylph, for example, is used by Rydia as an Eidolon
04:16with Whisperwind siphoning off enemy HP and giving it to the party. Sylph also appears in other
04:22franchise entries like Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy Tactics, although the later versions cast
04:27silence as part of Whisperwind instead of the usual HP drain.
04:3815. Gilgamesh
04:46There's a collection of powerful swords within the arsenal of Gilgamesh. They possess a history of
04:52both helping and hurting Final Fantasy party members over the years. This character takes its name from
04:57an epic Mesopotamian poem, debuting back in Final Fantasy V as a major sideboss. His appearances as
05:04a summon are usually predicted by a little bit of side quest work on the player's part, such as when
05:09Gilgamesh replaces Odin as an optional guardian force in Final Fantasy VIII. His sword attacks are
05:15chosen at random, with most being incredibly powerful. That is, unless Gilgamesh's attacks land on
05:21Excalibur, which only deals a single hit point of damage.
05:2914. Ixion
05:36This next Final Fantasy summon is one with a comparatively more recent history than many other
05:41examples on our list. That said, 2001 was still quite a way back to debut new recurring characters.
05:47But Ixion seemed more than up for the challenge. Its first appearance was in Final Fantasy X,
05:52where its lightning attacks replaced Ramu as the de facto electrical summon for that franchise's
05:58universe. Ixion would continue to appear in future entries, usually as an adversary,
06:02but occasionally back in summonable capacity, a la its usage in 2011's Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy Battle
06:10game. 13. Titan
06:24Final Fantasy III was the first game to feature Titan as both a powerful enemy and an optional summon.
06:30However, it was probably Rydia's usage of Titan in Final Fantasy IV that further fleshed out the lore of
06:36this powerful Earth creature. Titan's initial non-elemental damage was replaced with this
06:41Earth-focused attack shortly after that Final Fantasy entry, with future appearances in games like Final
06:47Fantasy V and IX delivering quaking damage to enemies. Meanwhile, the version of Titan that
06:52appears in Final Fantasy XI also utilizes the stone skin defense on the party, protecting them from damage.
07:0212. Tonberry
07:10The cute and diminutive appearance of the Tonberry is another example of looks being very, very
07:15deceiving within the Final Fantasy universe. These little hooded menaces wield a butcher knife that
07:20can instantly kill a party member, or at the very least, deal massive damage. Meanwhile, the summonable
07:26Tonberry in Final Fantasy VIII deals non-elemental damage in battle, but it is notable for some other
07:31benefits. Characters that have junctioned with Tonberry, for example, recover HP while walking and
07:36also start random encounters with their ATB gauge at maximum. They can also be utilized as summons in the
07:42Nintendo DS game Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings.
07:5211. Carbuncle
08:01A lot of the summoned monsters of Final Fantasy are notable for their offensive capabilities, but the
08:07Carbuncle's potent defense shouldn't be denied. This ruby-headed creature casts reflect on the party
08:12during its debut in Final Fantasy V, while future iterations boost Carbuncle's worth by including
08:18health regeneration, haste, and shell properties to the summoner. Savvy Final Fantasy players will
08:23make the most out of Carbuncle's support status as a summon, using it in conjunction with a strong
08:28offensive base or combining it with another guardian force for a perfectly balanced plan of attack.
08:3910. Phoenix
08:47This summon on our list is literally and figuratively a rare bird, a summon creature which heals the party
08:53while also taking on their foes. Indeed, Phoenix's Flames of Rebirth possesses the power to revive fallen
08:59allies, while at the same time dealing some scorching fire damage to enemy hordes. The Phoenix Down
09:04Feathers are also known throughout the Final Fantasy franchise as inventory items which resurrect the
09:09dead, making the impact of this summon creature one that is felt throughout the Final Fantasy franchise.
09:239. Ramu
09:29All hail the god of thunder. This badass summon takes the appearance of a wizened yet regal old man with
09:35a
09:35long beard and staff. Appearances can be deceiving, however, for Ramu possesses the power of thunder and
09:41lightning at his fingertips, assisting the party via his powerful attack known as Judgment Bolt, which
09:47strikes down all foes in its path with a mighty lightning bolt from the heavens. Ramu has kept
09:51pretty much the same appearance throughout his time in the Final Fantasy universe, making him one of the
09:56mainstay elemental summons which assist the player during the series.
10:00I think I'm having a moment.
10:01Yeah, we'd better hurry over to Cindy's.
10:048. Leviathan
10:14This Lord of the Seas exists as one of the most venerable Final Fantasy summons, with a history
10:19which dates all the way back to Final Fantasy 2. Leviathan takes the appearance of a giant sea
10:24serpent whose tsunami wave attack proves most effective against enemies of fiery or mechanical
10:29origin. This ocean guardian hasn't always been on the player's side, however, as his first appearance in
10:35the Final Fantasy franchise included swallowing the party whole, before eventually becoming an ally
10:40to summon her characters in later game entries.
10:497. Alexander
10:56Talk about impressive. Depending on which Final Fantasy game one plays, the casting animation for
11:02this summon creature can take quite some time before its full fury can be unleashed.
11:07The immense mobile fortress known as Alexander is worth it, however, as this gigantic summon
11:12casts divine judgment, which deals heavy holy damage to all foes in its way. This makes Alexander
11:17a particularly worthy ally to have when facing down undead or otherwise unholy enemies, while the
11:23summon's supreme stature makes him one of the most visually impressive creatures of the entire Final Fantasy
11:29universe. 6. Ifrit
11:45A classic never goes out of style. Ifrit just might be the closest thing to a reliable old friend in
11:52the
11:52summoning world, a fearsome god of fire which has been an integral part of the Final Fantasy bestiary for
11:57many years. Ifrit possesses an appearance similar to that of an Arabian Djinn, or Genie Albia with
12:03large demonic horns and a penchant for tossing down massive fireballs from the sky upon the party's
12:08enemies. The presence of Ifrit is always a welcome one whenever players are pitted against creatures
12:13of ice and snow, while the summon's legacy as one of the first castable allies acquired by party makes
12:20him one of whose reliable reputation is safe and secure.
12:305. Anima
12:42The next summon on our list reminds us more like something out of Hellraiser franchise than anything
12:47remotely related to the worlds of fantasy or magic. Anima's summon animation is almost as horrific as
12:53her appearance, as this shackled and howling mistress of pain is raised up via chains from the underworld
12:58in what can really only be described as one of the most badass summoning sequences in all of Final
13:04Fantasy history. Anima's attack is even more devastating as her overdrive attack envelops enemies into her
13:10netherworld, where she snaps free of her chains and assaults enemies with unlimited power. Now, that's what we call
13:16sharing the pain.
13:234. Shiva
13:30Don't let this summons delicate looks and grace deceive you. For Shiva, the Ice Queen is not a
13:35creature with which to be trifled. Shiva's elemental attacks of diamond dust and heavenly strike are
13:40tailor-made to be utilized against any fiery horde, making her the yin to Ifri's Yang. She is also one
13:47of the most commonly encountered summons throughout the Final Fantasy franchise, having appeared in nearly
13:52every Final Fantasy outing since the third game.
14:023. Knights of the Round
14:043. Knights of the Round
14:234. But 13 Arthurian knights, who come together to deal massive damage to any enemy unfortunate
14:28enough to be caught standing in the general vicinity. Each knight attacks with its own unique
14:33weapons and spells, with the final attack arriving in the form of King Arthur himself, armed with the
14:39mythical sword Excalibur. This story gets a little twist in the 14th installment of the Final Fantasy
14:44franchise, however, where the players actually pitted against the knights during the game's final
14:49climactic battle, as they take the form of King Thoradin VII and the Knights of Heaven's Ward.
15:032. Odin
15:08Many summons within the Final Fantasy universe take their names or origins from world mythology. Odin is
15:14no exception to this idea, existing as one of the series' most popular and enduring characters.
15:20Odin usually appears as a giant imposing figure, similar to his stature as the Allfather of Norse
15:25mythology. He is clad in armor, a horned helmet, and rides a multi-legged steed by the name of Sleipnir,
15:31upon which both his sword and Lance Gunnir are mounted. Odin's summon attack Zantinsukin has
15:37the power to inflict instant death upon the party's opponents, making him one of the most impressive
15:42and effective summons to ever grace a Final Fantasy screen.
15:571. Bahamut
16:10We saved the best for last, of course, that being the fearsome King of Dragons,
16:15the mighty Bahamut. This summon has existed as a fan favorite throughout many games in the Final
16:20Fantasy franchise, even receiving his own game for the Japanese Famicom Bahamut Lagoon in 1996.
16:26Acquiring Bahamut is never an easy task, however, often requiring the party to best the beast in
16:32battle before the Dragon King will even agree to be summoned. Once achieved, however, Bahamut's mega
16:37flare attack more than prove its worth, by inflicting defense penetrating non-elemental damage against which
16:43very few enemies can survive.
