00:00I would rather live in truth.
00:03I fear you may come to regret those words.
00:07Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're looking at the saddest deaths found in the God of War series.
00:14Even though it's mostly known for brutal and, in some cases, awesome deaths,
00:19the franchise still has a few that can tug at your heartstrings.
00:23As such, a spoiler warning is clearly in effect.
00:28This is what hope delivers, child. You should learn that now.
00:33But before we dive into it, we publish new content all week long,
00:37so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:43Calliope and Lysandra, God of War
00:47How much is enough, Kratos? When will it end?
00:51When the glory of Sparta is known throughout the world.
00:54Let's start with the series' inciting incident.
00:57After Kratos pledged his life to Ares so he could be victorious over his foes,
01:02the God of War repaid him by trying to turn him into the ultimate warrior.
01:06And someone of that skill needs no distractions from glory,
01:10which is how Ares viewed Kratos' wife and daughter.
01:13While having him attack a village loyal to Athena,
01:16Ares blinded Kratos with rage and bloodlust,
01:19tricking him into killing his own family.
01:21Even though it's something everyone knows about the character,
01:25it's still undeniably tragic,
01:27causing Kratos endless torment throughout the series.
01:31Adding insult to injury,
01:33the village's oracle then curses him
01:35to wear the ashes of his slain family on his skin,
01:39forever reminding him of what he had done.
01:41His skin white with the ash of his dead family,
01:45the ghost of Sparta had been born.
01:49Athena, God of War 2.
01:51It is done.
01:55You have let go of that which made you mortal.
02:00Your ties to this world are severed.
02:03Although it's easy to see why Kratos has a distaste for most gods in the Greek pantheon,
02:08one he was actually quite fond of,
02:10or as close to fond as Greek era Kratos gets,
02:14was Athena.
02:15She attempted to guide Kratos as best as she could
02:18while still remaining loyal to her family.
02:20At the climax of God of War 2,
02:22Kratos comes close to killing Zeus.
02:24But since her father's death will bring the destruction of Olympus,
02:28she throws herself in front of Kratos' blade,
02:31taking a fatal wound.
02:33Since every other god in this era
02:35is worthy of being run through with a sword,
02:37Athena's death is quite sad.
02:40And with it being accidental on Kratos' part,
02:43you can feel his pain.
02:59Callisto, God of War, Ghost of Sparta.
03:10It was quickly established that the earlier games would hold no happiness nor family for Kratos.
03:17Ghost of Sparta follows him as he digs into his past,
03:20with visions leading him to Atlantis during the beginning of the game.
03:24There, he finds his mother, Callisto, trapped and cursed by the gods.
03:29The nature of the curse reveals itself
03:31when Callisto tries to tell Kratos about his mysterious father.
03:35She transforms into a monster,
03:37which Kratos is then forced to battle and kill.
03:40While his mother does finally feel at peace,
03:43Kratos obviously doesn't.
03:44Forcing him to murder his own mother in defense is a nasty trick,
03:48and another in a long list of tragedies brought upon him by the gods.
03:58Thor, God of War, Ragnarok.
04:01You seem like a calm and reasonable person.
04:09Are you?
04:11A calm and reasonable person.
04:15Granted, you could argue that the God of Thunder had it coming.
04:18Thor murdered a lot of innocent giants and was pretty gung-ho about killing anyone else Odin told him to.
04:26But one of the main themes of the Norse duology is that anyone can change,
04:30despite their past horrid actions.
04:33During their second fight, Kratos implores Thor to be better for the sake of their children.
04:38And although it takes some convincing, it works.
04:41Thor finds peace with his enemy, signaling a greater change.
04:45And right after this happens, he's murdered by Odin for disobeying him,
04:50right in front of his daughter, Thrud.
04:52He never gets the opportunity to grow given to him.
04:56No!
05:00Thrud.
05:02This was all their fault.
05:04They've done this to us, to our family.
05:07Pandora, God of War 3.
05:11How do you know of me?
05:13You're the ghost of Sparta.
05:15Everyone knows who you are.
05:17Everyone is afraid of you.
05:19Kratos is naturally haunted by the loss of his daughter Calliope throughout the Greek games.
05:24So when he comes across the young Pandora in God of War 3,
05:28neither he nor the player can help but make the connection between a grieving father and a lost child.
05:34The two travel together for a brief time, making it to the peak of Mount Olympus.
05:38It's here where the young girl must open Pandora's box so that Kratos can defeat Zeus.
05:44Sadly, this act will take her life, something that, despite leading to his vengeance, Kratos doesn't want to happen.
05:52In the end, vengeance wins out, and Kratos begins the fight against his father as Pandora willingly sacrifices herself.
05:59While the game doesn't give you much time to sit with it, the death of an innocent child is definitely
06:04emotional.
06:06Don't fail her like you failed your family!
06:17God of War Ragnarok
06:22You know, I'd cut off your head, but it seems somebody beat me to it.
06:28After making amends with Freya, Kratos and Atreus are introduced to her brother Freyr.
06:33The veneer god of fertility is easy to like, being extremely protective and loving of his sister,
06:39and inspiring loyalty in the members of his resistance group.
06:42He cares for those around him, which is refreshing for a god in this series.
06:47Sadly, during the climax, as Asgard is being destroyed by Ragnarok,
06:51Freyr holds back the destruction as long as he can, while others escape to safety, which ends up costing him
06:58his life.
06:58We're sad to say goodbye to Freyr, and even sadder for Freya,
07:02who only just recently came to terms with the death of her son, Baldur, from the previous game.
07:10What?
07:12You have to go.
07:15Freya!
07:16It is time.
07:22Deimos, God of War, Ghost of Sparta.
07:26Whoever controlled the marked war, controlled the fate of Olympus.
07:32Red!
07:33Deimos!
07:34With her dying breath, Kratos' mother tells him to seek out his long-lost brother Deimos,
07:40who has honestly led a pretty miserable existence.
07:44Kidnapped as a child by Ares, Deimos was taken to Death's Domain,
07:48where he's been held captive and tortured until Kratos finds him towards the end of the game.
07:53Deimos holds a serious grudge against Kratos for not saving him,
07:57but after their fight, the two brothers join forces to take down the real enemy, Thanatos.
08:02Unfortunately, Deimos barely has time to get used to freedom before Thanatos slams him into a wall,
08:08killing him.
08:09It's hard not to feel sorry for Kratos during a lot of moments,
08:13and losing his brother so soon after reuniting is a major one.
08:29God of War, Ragnarok
08:31Okay, we know his soul is put into the body of Garm, a gigantic, vicious hound in Helheim,
08:38later in the game.
08:38That doesn't change the fact that the opening death of Fenrir and Ragnarok is an absolute punch to the gut.
08:45After escaping Freya's wrath, Atreus is forced to say goodbye to his canine friend, who is deathly ill.
08:52Everything about this scene is pitiful, especially watching Fenrir fail to keep food down.
08:57Sonny Soljic does a great job conveying Atreus' grief in this moment,
09:02something the character isn't even allowed to sit with for long,
09:05because Kratos beckons him to train for a war they're not ready for.
09:09It's a dire, yet emotionally impactful way to begin the game.
09:22Orkos, God of War, Ascension
09:34Kratos never gets the chance to have many friends, and that's especially the case during the Greek era.
09:40The prequel, Ascension, gives us one of those rare cases in Orkos, son of Ares and the fury, Electo.
09:47Orkos feels sorry for Kratos, held and tortured for breaking his oath to Ares after what the God of War
09:53did to him.
09:54He helps him escape, and aids him in defeating the Furies over the course of the game.
09:58Sadly, Orkos knows that Kratos can never be free of Ares so long as he lives,
10:04since he is the oath-keeper between the two.
10:07He asks Kratos to kill him so that they can both be free of his father,
10:11which Kratos, sadly, obliges.
10:13With the death of Orkos, the blood oath to Ares was finally broken,
10:19and the painful truth rushed back to Kratos' mind.
10:23Brock, God of War, Ragnarok.
10:26Say, you must be smart or something, boy.
10:31You're a boy, aren't you?
10:34Ha!
10:35This may not be ranked, but we doubt there's a single death in the series
10:40that can touch the immense sorrow that comes with Brock's.
10:44The blacksmith made a great impression during the 2018 game,
10:47being a hilariously foul-mouthed yet helpful ally.
10:51He continues stealing every scene he's in during the events of Ragnarok,
10:55until Odin reveals he's been disguised as Tyr the whole time,
10:59and stabs him out of frustration when Brock begins questioning him.
11:03This caught everyone by surprise,
11:05and as Brock breathed his last in his brother's arms,
11:09the group dynamic was left with a huge hole.
11:11This was made even sadder with the knowledge that,
11:14due to events that occurred before the games,
11:17Brock was left with an incomplete soul,
11:19and as such, he couldn't enter an afterlife.
11:24I love you, Brock.
11:30Which God of War death emotionally shattered you?
