00:00This is the source of everything.
00:13Welcome to Mojo Plays, and the Final Fantasy series has some of the best character designs in the medium,
00:19and also some of the most nightmare-inducing horrific boss designs ever created.
00:24Seriously, what were they on when they came up with these?
00:27No, I forbid it.
00:31You are not a god.
00:33You are but flesh and bone.
00:36You are not one of us.
00:38Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest
00:43videos.
00:47Tonberry, Various.
00:53Tonberry might just be the most unassuming enemy in all of Final Fantasy,
00:58but behind its creepy blank yellow eyes and dark robes lies one of the deadliest creatures in the entire series.
01:05Wielding nothing more than a lantern and a simple butcher knife,
01:09Tonberry has been terrifying Final Fantasy players for decades.
01:12This seemingly simple creature is a damage sponge,
01:16and none of your attacks seem to slow his labored pace towards you to poke you with his simple knife
01:21resulting in instant death.
01:23These little soulless bastards are relentless in their pursuit of the player,
01:28and you are given very little time to take them down before they reach you,
01:31inflicting immediate and unblockable death.
01:34While Tonberry appears as a boss numerous times,
01:38some games have become so brazen as to make them a random encounter,
01:42furthering their murderous machinations by giving you no warning.
01:45You did it, Cloud!
01:47I now doubt thee the new king of the Tonberries!
01:50Necron, Final Fantasy IX.
02:00Necron is the representation of death within Final Fantasy IX,
02:04and just one look at its appearance absolutely fills you with the dread of death.
02:08Necron's angelic appearance is offset by its vapid, empty expression,
02:13coupled with its imposing nature and near-constant disapproving demeanor.
02:17Necron seems disgusted by the party's mere existence.
02:20The fact that Necron even summons the party up to his level
02:24only further establishes his dominance over the party.
02:27Necron's ethereal appearance is full of biblical references
02:30such as Ezekiel's description of wheels within wheels,
02:33and makes the whole be-not-afraid thing much more understandable.
02:37But this time, be afraid.
02:39Along with Necron's unsettling appearance,
02:41he can unleash several devastating and screen-filling god-tier attacks.
02:56Cloud of Darkness, Final Fantasy III.
02:59When traversing a location simply known as the World of Darkness,
03:02you expect to run into all manner of horrific, nightmare-inducing creatures.
03:06But even with all of that,
03:08the Cloud of Darkness still manages to be the most unsettling.
03:11Appearing as a woman emerging from a cloud,
03:14the design is eerie in its simplicity.
03:16She appears almost as a science experiment gone wrong,
03:20with half her body constantly being engulfed by the cloud,
03:23and multiple snake-like creatures emerging from the void behind her.
03:26No matter what version of Final Fantasy III you fight her in,
03:30her design is so iconic,
03:32it hasn't needed any updating in three decades.
03:35Orphan, Final Fantasy XIII.
03:37To flay a shell and humans should not thrive.
03:42To stout a shell and they will not die.
03:48Slaughter and salvation.
03:51Just when you think things are finally over,
03:53something like Orphan rises up as the true final boss
03:57and completely destroys your perception of not only the game,
04:00but what is possible in its creature design.
04:02With features that would make H.R. Geiger proud,
04:05the closer you look at the details,
04:07the worse it gets.
04:08Comprising multiple faces and multiple body parts,
04:11Orphan looks as though it emerged from the deepest parts of a cosmic nightmare,
04:16combining elements of both heaven and hell in its creation.
04:19Full of claws, clockworks, and angelic wings,
04:22the design is both reassuring and unsettling
04:24depending on which half you're looking at.
04:27Thankfully, Orphan's second form isn't as disturbing,
04:30but nothing will erase that image from our minds.
04:45The best villains of the Final Fantasy series are the most unassuming,
04:49those who hide their true form until the very end
04:52and just traumatize an entire generation of gamers with their transformation.
04:56This is absolutely the case with Final Fantasy VIII's Ultimecia,
05:00as her lady-like alter ego is dropped in favor of her true time and space bending form.
05:05Much like every other final big bad in the Final Fantasy series,
05:08Ultimecia has multiple forms,
05:10but it's her final stage that is truly the most cosmic body horror.
05:15Ascending from the darkness,
05:16her face has now been replaced with a void.
05:19Wings have exploded from her back,
05:20and her arms have been stretched to an unnatural length.
05:23The final encounter is not only one we'll never forget,
05:26but also one that will haunt us for the rest of our lives.
05:29Kefka Palazzo, Final Fantasy VI.
05:32Not only is Kefka one of the most unassuming villains in the entire franchise,
05:36he's also the only one to successfully follow through on his plan to destroy the world.
05:41No one suspects the clown, and that worked in Kefka's favor.
05:46After successfully destroying everything,
05:49Kefka believes himself a god,
05:50and as his numerous forms become even more unhinged as the fight goes on,
05:55it's anyone's guess as to what his final transformation will bring.
05:58However, it's this final form that is by far the most unnerving.
06:03Emerging from the heavens as a full-blown deity,
06:06Kefka is the embodiment of perfection,
06:09and his angelic appearance coupled with a sadistic clown grin on his face
06:13is more disturbing than all his other forms combined.
06:16In the end, it's the clown who has the last laugh.
06:19Ultima, Final Fantasy XVI.
06:21The incantation primed,
06:25but one task remains,
06:31to empty the vessel.
06:34Ultima acts as the man behind the curtain,
06:37pulling the strings throughout the events of Final Fantasy XVI.
06:40And naturally, any time he appears on screen,
06:43his general appearance and demeanor is enough to make your skin crawl.
06:46His cold and callous speech only adds to his overall icky and unappealing nature and aesthetic.
06:52His dark, soulless eyes and expressionless face,
06:55along with his multi-limbed, not exactly humanoid appearance,
06:58is made even more grotesque once he begins his transformations,
07:02each adding more limbs and extremities than the last.
07:05As his power increases, so do his transformations,
07:08growing even more elaborate and extreme as he attempts to defeat Clive,
07:12all while becoming more and more unhinged as he battles for his believed superiority over humanity.
07:18The world you seek is not a fantasy!
07:23The early fantasy here is yours.
07:26And we shall be its final witness.
07:30No!
07:31Lady Unaleska, Final Fantasy X.
07:34I will free you before you can drown in your sorrow.
07:38It is better for you to die in hope than to live in despair.
07:43Let me be your liberator.
07:45Much like Ultimecia, you would never suspect beneath her beautiful appearance
07:50lies the stuff of cosmic eldritch nightmares.
07:53Encountered numerous times throughout the journey,
07:55Unaleska always presented herself as cold but still somewhat welcoming.
07:59With the end in sight, however, the facade drops and her mask comes off completely.
08:04Her first form is nothing too remarkable,
08:06while her second stage adds strange tendrils elevating her above the battlefield.
08:10Her final form, however, would give Cthulhu pause.
08:13At the end of those tendrils is a hideous face wearing Unaleska's body as a hair accessory.
08:19With an enormous snake head complete with an enlarged tongue and eyes,
08:23Unaleska's final form will never let you look at a snake the same way again.
08:35X-Death Final Fantasy V
08:42Don't let the early encounters with X-Death fool you.
08:45What originally appears to be a standard boss is truly anything but,
08:49and its true final form is enough to give HP Lovecraft nightmares.
08:53Naturally, as the final boss, X-Death has multiple forms, each somehow worse than the last.
09:00Initially appearing as an enormous cosmic worm composed of corpses,
09:04its many faces contorted in agony, and its tails stretching out into the stars,
09:08the worst is yet to come.
09:10After defeating this first form, X-Death returns from the depths of the void.
09:15Re-emerging is something that is almost indescribable.
09:18With multiple bodies seemingly fused together,
09:20X-Death's final stage is enough to drive anyone mad the longer they look at it
09:25and attempt to understand what they're seeing.
09:27The fact that you're locked in conflict with this thing, in space no less,
09:31is an existential crisis we don't even want to consider.
09:42Jenova Dreamweaver Final Fantasy VII Remake
09:59As an alien creature from the great beyond,
10:02Jenova already had an otherworldly cosmic horror aesthetic.
10:06But, while the original design in Final Fantasy VII was limited by the hardware,
10:10the remake was able to fully realize the creature's nightmarish potential.
10:14An amalgamation of body parts,
10:17Jenova Dreamweaver is an eldritch horror become real.
10:20Her monstrous form, complete with tentacles, is horrifying enough.
10:24But the arena itself is also alive with the flesh of Jenova
10:28and filled with her horrific screams.
10:31Reminiscent of John Carpenter's The Thing,
10:33the entire encounter is so unsettling,
10:35the characters themselves even question if it's real or not.
10:39In the end, while we appreciate the visual upgrade,
10:41we prefer the old retro Jenova Dreamweaver
10:44for being much less horrific.
10:55What was the most disturbing Final Fantasy boss that traumatized you?
