00:00Will you be able to play with your friends?
00:02Yeah.
00:03Welcome to MojoPlays and today we're looking at some of the worst slaps in the face for gamers.
00:08Whether they were explicit in their claims or just hinted towards something greater,
00:12these are the 10 biggest broken promises in gaming history.
00:15Let's go.
00:16Before we continue, we publish content all week long,
00:19so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to get notified of our latest videos.
00:25Make FPS great again, Splitgate 2.
00:27Here we go.
00:35There's nothing worse than being hyperbolic,
00:38shooting down your peers, claiming greatness for yourself and then remaining mediocre.
00:42It's embarrassing.
00:43Chuck a hat on that parodies one of the most divisive figures of the 21st century
00:46and you've just sealed your fate.
00:48Splitgate 2 arrived swinging with bold marketing about revitalizing the FPS genre,
00:53but for many players it struggled to meaningfully evolve beyond the trends it claimed to challenge.
00:57Looking at your $70 skins there, Splitgate.
01:00The original Splitgate gained attention by blending arena-style gunplay with portal mechanics,
01:05offering a fresh twist on familiar formulas.
01:08Expectations were that a sequel would double down on innovation.
01:11Instead, critics argued that Splitgate 2 leaned heavily into some seasonal content cycles,
01:17cosmetic monetization and progression grinds that dominate modern shooters.
01:20While the gameplay was mechanically competent,
01:23the promise of restoring classic skill-driven FPS felt diluted by an emphasis on retention and monetization,
01:29both of which have created dominant games in the genre and also angered gamers to no end.
01:34Make FPS great again? Nice try.
01:38Good kill.
01:40Halo Killer, Haze
01:51When Haze was marketed as a potential Halo Killer, expectations shot through the roof,
01:57which would be fine if the claim wasn't trying to compare itself to one of the greatest FPS series of
02:01all time.
02:02Backed by confident messaging and positioned as a major PlayStation-exclusive FPS,
02:07it promised a fresh sci-fi universe and gameplay to rival Halo 3.
02:11What players received instead was a technically uneven shooter that leaned heavily on ideas
02:16already circulating in the mid-2000s FPS boom.
02:19The Nectar mechanic, which was their crowning achievement, was nothing special and definitely nothing new.
02:25Level design felt corridor-bound, AI lacked sophistication,
02:28and the narrative's attempt at social commentary never quite reached the depth it was trying so hard to reach.
02:33It tried to be the Matrix and became do you ever feel like a plastic bag?
02:43Silent Hills PT
02:44A reveal is as good as a promise, and in 2013 gamers were left buzzing with excitement
03:02when they finished the PS4-exclusive short horror experience PT
03:06to see a dope trailer that explained that what they were just playing was a teaser-slash-demo
03:11for the newest Silent Hill entry, Silent Hills.
03:14We had Norman Reedus as our main star, and gaming director legend Hideo Kojima
03:19combining his brain with director Guillermo del Toro
03:22to create a game that had the potential to change the horror genre.
03:26Instead, Konami and Kojima went their different ways,
03:29removing him towards the end of development for Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain.
03:32The fifth numbered entry in the series that was birthed and bred by Kojima himself,
03:37and inevitably they cancelled Silent Hills.
03:39This broken promise felt like extra sting from Konami who have so much to thank Kojima for,
03:45and seemed to have kicked him to the curb when he deserved so much more.
03:58Early Fatality Mortal Kombat 1 and Mortal Kombat 11
04:01Kick us out if you break something.
04:04Oh, this won't last long enough for that to happen.
04:07You will be down in no time.
04:09Both Mortal Kombat 11 and Mortal Kombat 1 built strong launch momentum with promises of long-term content,
04:15ongoing character additions, and sustained competitive support,
04:18only for post-launch plans to wind down sooner than many players expected.
04:22People argue this wasn't exactly promised, but I disagree.
04:26Mortal Kombat 11 delivered multiple combat packs and a story expansion,
04:29but communication around the end of new DLC felt abrupt,
04:33especially for fans anticipating additional fighters rumoured or teased within the community.
04:38Years later, Mortal Kombat 1 launched with similar messaging about continued evolution,
04:42seasonal content and future expansions,
04:44yet support appeared to taper off faster than some players believed had been implied.
04:48In both cases, the perception wasn't necessarily about the quantity of content released,
04:53but about expectation management.
04:55When live service elements and roadmap-style updates are emphasised during marketing,
05:00communities assume extended lifespans.
05:02Ending support earlier than anticipated can leave competitive scenes and dedicated players feeling stranded,
05:08and this reinforces scepticism for fans who have already begun to fade.
05:11Honey, you're lucky Steven owed you a favour.
05:14I'm telling you, Chris, we're fine.
05:17Can you join me in the fact-based universe just once?
05:20The ultimate alien experience, Aliens Colonial Marines.
05:24The umbilical is venting Atmo into the black.
05:27Looks dicey, sir.
05:29Dicey?
05:30Raider, I need grown-up words.
05:32Aliens Colonial Marines was marketed as the definitive interactive follow-up
05:36to one of the greatest films of all time,
05:38repeatedly described as the ultimate Aliens experience.
05:41Trailers showcase cinematic lighting, sharp enemy AI and atmospheric environments
05:46that appeared to capture the claustrophobic terror of Aliens.
05:49Expectations were sky-high, especially with promises of authentic lore connections and involvement from key film creatives.
05:56When the game finally released, many fans felt blindsided, myself and my older brother included.
06:02In fact, this was very close to when the suspicion part of my brain came online,
06:06and I realised developers might try and lie to me in order to make money.
06:09The final product suffered from inconsistent visuals compared to the early demos, uneven AI behaviour, technical bugs and repetitive level
06:16design.
06:17Instead of tense, unpredictable Xenomorph encounters, enemies often behaved erratically, or lacked menace showcased in the previews,
06:24from running into walls to standing still for no reason.
06:26Cooperative play offered moments of fun, but it wasn't enough.
06:29Trust me, Daddy.
06:30But we got room in the cargo bays.
06:33Understood.
06:34We are heading to the cargo bay.
06:362-1 out.
06:38Cancelled.
06:38Prince of Persia.
06:39The Sands of Time.
06:40Most people think time is like a river
06:44that flows swift and sure in one direction.
06:47But I have seen the face of time.
06:50And I can tell you, they are wrong.
06:56I'm currently working on another project titled the 10 worst video game publishers of all time,
07:00and I wanted to put Ubisoft at number one just for this reason, but I was forced to be professional.
07:05Goddammit, boss mojo.
07:07Ubisoft announced a remake of Prince of Persia The Sands of Time with the promise of modern visuals,
07:11rebuilt combat and a faithful revival of one of its most beloved action adventure titles.
07:15For long-time fans, it felt like the long-awaited return of a franchise that had been dormant for years.
07:21However, the initial reveal was met with heavy criticism over its graphical quality and presentation,
07:26which many felt looked outdated rather than reimagined.
07:29Following backlash, Ubisoft delayed the project multiple times, reassigning development to a different studio
07:33and assuring players it was still in progress.
07:36Over time, communication became sparse, release windows disappeared, and confidence was falling away.
07:41And finally, the game was declared cancelled along with six other projects.
07:46But what truly stabbed the dagger of time deeper into our backs was the revelation from developers
07:50that the project was basically finished.
07:53Come on, Ubisoft!
07:54I brought this on us.
07:55You are brave.
07:56Ah!
07:57And cool.
07:58Ah!
08:01Don't let go!
08:02I could look at him.
08:05Or Drupal A, Skull and Bones.
08:07Get Skullops cargo.
08:10We can hunt these fish for food.
08:12You must track fast!
08:16One thing we've learned is that developers need to temper expectations, not build them
08:20beyond realistic expectations.
08:22Wait, wait, wait.
08:22What's Ubisoft doing?
08:23Calling a glorified ship simulator a quadruple-A game when the best high-budget games of all time
08:27have only ever been called a triple-A game?
08:29Oh, that would probably turn out great.
08:31F***ing idiots.
08:32Skull and Bones made this ridiculous claim, implying a leap beyond traditional big-budget games,
08:37deeper systems, cutting-edge visuals, and genre-defining ambition.
08:41Given the project's long development cycle and multiple delays, many assumed the extra
08:45time and resources would translate into something revolutionary.
08:48Instead, when the game finally launched, the response was, what the f*** is this?
08:52While visually polished in places, players found its core loop repetitive, its world less
08:58dynamic than promised, and its progression systems heavily centred on grinding and live
09:02service structure.
09:04The problem is, if you're cocky enough to claim quadruple-A, you could deliver Red Dead
09:08Redemption 2 and we'd probably still roll our eyes.
09:12Hey, don't look at me.
09:15You're the best pirate to win Skullok over.
09:17Me?
09:18Hiya.
09:19I had my shot in the past.
09:22No Story Mode Overwatch 2.
09:31Before launch, Overwatch 2 was said to be more than a sequel.
09:35It was framed as a major evolution built around a dope story campaign.
09:39Blizzard showcased talent trees, replayable hero missions, and long-form narrative content
09:43that would expand the universe beyond the competitive multiplayer of the first entry.
09:47For many fans, the Story Mode was the primary justification for replacing Overwatch with its
09:52sequel.
09:52And this might come as a surprise, but things changed.
09:55In 2023, Blizzard announced that the expansive PvE mode, including promised hero progression
10:00systems, had been cancelled.
10:02Uh-oh.
10:03The shift left players feeling misled, especially those who had accepted sweeping gameplay changes
10:09under the assumption that a substantial cooperative campaign was coming.
10:12The issue wasn't just cut content, it was expectation.
10:15And after basically killing their first entry, it was game on mole for Reddit.
10:23It's invincible again!
10:25Lord, it takes us a relay!
10:28No Man's Lie, No Man's Sky.
10:30Will you be able to play with your friends?
10:32Yeah.
10:33No Man's Sky didn't just stumble at launch, it face planted into a fireball of lies,
10:37courtesy of head developer Sean Murray.
10:38Pre-release trailers painted a picture of a boundless universe, packed with seamless multiplayer,
10:44complex ecosystems, and near-infinite discovery.
10:47Interviews and demo showcases only fuelled that excitement.
10:50Then, the game launched, and oh no, oh god no.
10:55Players encountered technical issues, repetitive gameplay loops, and a noticeable absence of
11:00several heavily-discussed features.
11:02Disappointment turned into backlash, and even legal scrutiny followed as consumers questioned
11:06the marketing.
11:07And by marketing, I mean outright lies.
11:09Just straight down the lens without blinking lies.
11:12The game is dope now, but that took years.
11:15They could have done all that without the lies.
11:25Next Gen Gaming
11:40When the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S were unveiled, the phrase Next Gen carried
11:45massive expectations.
11:47Instant loading, groundbreaking AI, transformative gameplay, and experiences that simply wouldn't
11:52be possible on older hardware.
11:54The reality, at least in the eyes of many players, has felt more incremental than revolutionary.
11:59While load times improved and performance modes delivered smoother framerates, much of
12:04the library consists of cross-generational titles also playable on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
12:09Instead of radically new design philosophies, gamers often received enhanced resolutions, ray-tracing
12:14toggles, and higher framerates layered into familiar formulas.
12:18Truly exclusive showcases have been pretty rare, and some highly anticipated releases arrived
12:23years into the console cycle.
12:25For parts of the community, this generation has felt like a prolonged transition period rather
12:30than a clear leap forward.
12:32And that has been, unfortunately, really disappointing.
12:34We've got plans to explore.
12:36We want to wow players.
12:38We expect the unexpected.
12:39And everyone can't wait.
12:40We can't wait.
12:41We can't wait to share them with you.
12:42It's so exciting.
12:44Incredibly exciting.
12:45It's really about love.
