On Friday, the national electoral council of Ecuador resolved to bring forward the seccional elections to November 29, which were originally scheduled for 2027. The council claims that the decision is due to climate reasons, but the agreement has sparked controversy and raised questions about its background. With four votes in favor and one against, the country's highest electoral authority agreed to this measure. According to a report from the national secretariat of risk management, floods, landslides or damage to infrastructure could impact the process. The only councilor to vote against the resolution, Elena Nájera, questioned the transparency of the report on which the decision was based, stating that it indicates that the damage would only affect 5% of polling stations. Despite verifying this fact, the president, Diana Atamaint, with majority support, resolved to change the date.
