00:03Where did the ball go?
00:06Oh, he's off.
00:08Zoomies!
00:09Zoomies! Let's go!
00:12Zoomies.
00:14There's the clockwise or the anti-clockwise zoomies.
00:18Where did the ball go?
00:20There's the figure of eight zoomies.
00:22Hey.
00:24Ready? Watch this.
00:26There's the chase zoomies, like the cat and mouse.
00:29Crazy kids.
00:30Zoomies are the equivalent of a kid at 3pm at a birthday party
00:34after they've had cake and red cordial.
00:36It is an expression of love and joy and excitement.
00:41Every dog has their own little calling card,
00:44their own unique way of bursting out that energy
00:46and it's just really fun to see.
00:48Got the zoomies.
00:49It's definitely a good sign when we're watching a dog
00:52meet a new family perform zoomies.
00:55It's a sign that the dog has felt comfortable enough
00:57with these new people to show off a bit of their fun and excitable side.
01:02You're a nut.
01:10I won't get too excited.
01:12Sure.
01:13I don't lose that.
01:15I will.
01:16I'll try not to.
01:18Here we go.
01:20Leanne and Pete are looking for a mate to join their next adventure.
01:24Hello, hello.
01:25Hello.
01:25Hello.
01:26How are we all?
01:27Good.
01:28I'm Leanne.
01:29This is Pete.
01:30How are you?
01:30I'm assuming you guys are in love.
01:34Sometimes.
01:35Sometimes.
01:36Sometimes.
01:36Depends what day it is.
01:37How many years or sometimes, huh?
01:3825 years.
01:39Wow.
01:40It's a long time.
01:41It's a long time.
01:42How did you do it between me and you?
01:44One of the worst things I ever did.
01:46Liar.
01:47Well, I led you here so can't be that bad.
01:50He's my best friend.
01:51I think there's a couple of other best friends ahead of me in the line.
01:57But we're mates, absolutely.
01:59She's in the top 50, I suppose.
02:03I'd prefer the top three.
02:06You've got all my other girlfriends that come before you.
02:10We're sure you guys must have had something in common, like a hobby or camp a bit.
02:15We've got a 24 foot fifth wheeler.
02:17A big caravan.
02:18We can live in it.
02:20We like music festivals.
02:22We go to music festivals.
02:24Ah.
02:24Gotcha.
02:24So you want a dog that can laugh and dance inside the cabin with you guys as your adventure.
02:29Yes.
02:29How much do you love Liar?
02:31Oh, yeah.
02:33I don't know how to put it into words there, but best friend, we bounce off each other.
02:39If I make her laugh, sometimes she'll make me laugh and stuff like that.
02:43We're both alike, I suppose, if you know what I mean.
02:49Yeah.
02:50Yeah.
02:51Yeah, but what do you like about me?
02:53I was trying to get away from that.
03:01We recently lost our 11 and a half year old Aussie bulldog.
03:05Oh, I'm so sorry.
03:07Still a bit early.
03:08Yeah, that's it.
03:09But, like, I cannot be without a dog.
03:12Yeah.
03:13This is Matilda, our Aussie bulldog.
03:15She got a form of a brain tumour.
03:19So we had to make that horrible decision.
03:21But it was in her best interest.
03:24She was a great girl.
03:25Hmm.
03:27Miss her a lot.
03:30I think he would have eventually had another dog, wouldn't you?
03:33But maybe not this soon.
03:34Yeah.
03:35He knows that I've been really down since I've struggled.
03:39Yeah.
03:40Since Matilda passed away.
03:43So he's doing that for me.
03:45Yeah.
03:46Yeah.
03:47It's just, it's a bit lonely at the moment.
03:50Aww.
03:50And we have to just put up with each other.
03:53Yeah.
03:54We need a dog.
03:56He misses his shadow.
03:57He misses having a shadow.
03:58He misses having someone following him around and keeping him company.
04:04Yeah.
04:05So being an Aussie bulldog, she was quite large, I'd say.
04:0836 kilos.
04:09Oof, yeah.
04:10Big girl.
04:11Yeah.
04:11So we're looking for something for a bit smaller than that now?
04:14Yeah.
04:15I wouldn't want one bigger than that.
04:18Okay.
04:18Yeah.
04:18And I want them on my lap, so I don't want 36 kilos on my lap.
04:22No, that's a bit heavier.
04:24Okay.
04:24Or sitting beside me, you know.
04:26In regards to breed, we often get a lot of Terriers.
04:30So Jack Russell, Foxy, Cross type things.
04:34They're a bit energetic.
04:35We go for walks and things, but we're not that active.
04:39Sure.
04:39Yeah.
04:40What age are we looking for today?
04:42Because I think we've lost Matilda so recently.
04:46Yeah.
04:46Even though it would be lovely to take a senior dog, I'm not ready to deal with that.
04:52So I'm thinking one to five.
04:53Okay.
04:54Yeah.
04:54And agree, Pete?
04:56I don't get it though.
04:57Yeah.
04:57No, he doesn't.
04:58What about greyhounds or something like that?
05:03I'd love a greyhound.
05:04Yeah.
05:04Oh, okay.
05:05Even though they're tall, they're not heavy.
05:06No, they're slim.
05:07And they're lazy.
05:09They'll be on the lounge with me.
05:11That'll sort you right out, wouldn't it?
05:14Yeah.
05:14I'm feeling really quite emotional actually.
05:17Yeah.
05:17No, that's understandable.
05:18It's a big step.
05:20I need someone to look after.
05:22I need someone to baby.
05:24And dogs love that sort of stuff.
05:26What about me?
05:27You don't need it.
05:27You don't need it.
05:30You get a little bit of a say.
05:32Well, I just think very much.
05:35A little bit.
05:37Liam did get really excited when we brought up the idea of a greyhound.
05:40Yeah.
05:41She's sort of like lit up.
05:42Yeah.
05:43What do you guys think about Donna?
05:45Donna.
05:47Beautiful girl.
05:48Donna.
05:50Donna.
05:51Donna's been with us for just over 200 days.
05:54She's a long-termer.
05:55Five years, five months old.
05:57She's a greyhound mixed breed.
05:59She arrived to us through the inspector department.
06:01There had been fights amongst other dogs in the home, so Donna was brought in with several
06:05other dogs.
06:05She's a social-friendly girl who can be shy in noisy settings and may stall if she does
06:10get spooked.
06:11Aww.
06:11She loves meeting new people.
06:13Having a playful time and curling up for a cuddle.
06:16I can't believe that no one's so much interest in Donna.
06:19She's a very beautiful dog.
06:21I think she ticks a lot of boxes.
06:22She's low energy.
06:24She is at the age of, you know, five.
06:26Towards the end of the age they're looking for.
06:29Look, I do have another option with Missy.
06:32Missy.
06:34Missy.
06:35She's a beautiful girl.
06:36She's six years old.
06:37She's a kelping cross.
06:38I think she's, you know, good Mike.
06:40She's low energy.
06:41She's really cuddly.
06:43She came to AWL after she was saved from euthanasia list of a royal pound.
06:47She can be a little bit timid at the start, but it warms up very quickly.
06:51But if she might be, just in that age bracket, she's a little bit too old.
06:54Yeah.
06:55Look, I think if Leanne's open to a greyhound especially,
06:59especially, you know, we've had Donna here for over 200 days now,
07:03and I think this could be the right home for her.
07:05I think, yeah, we'll go with Donna.
07:07Yay, Donna!
07:13We think we've found you the best dog.
07:15She's got a heart of gold, she's gentle,
07:19she is low energy, she's cuddly.
07:23Her name's Donna.
07:25Yes.
07:27Very human name for a dog.
07:29I love human names.
07:29That's so cute.
07:31What's her breed?
07:32So Donna is a greyhound.
07:35Yay!
07:36I know you were very excited about a greyhound.
07:38I did want to learn, but I do like greyhounds.
07:41Yeah.
07:44Pete's like, whatever.
07:45That's just not what I was thinking about.
07:48She's been here quite a while.
07:50Good.
07:51Yeah, so we do know a lot about her.
07:54Yep.
07:54She loves people, she seems to love other dogs.
07:58That's good.
07:59She's a big lap dog too, so she'll cuddle up with you on the couch,
08:02and yeah, you won't have any shortage of that.
08:05Do you want to meet her?
08:07Okay.
08:07Perfect.
08:08All right, no worries.
08:09Let's meet Donna.
08:11Donna.
08:11Gorgeous Donna.
08:14Oh, a greyhound.
08:17That's not what we expected, but...
08:20I bet it's a black one.
08:22Well, it'll be the opposite.
08:24It's nowhere near the same as Matilda, so...
08:27And a black one could be good.
08:30I've always had dogs.
08:32I loved Matilda.
08:33She was...
08:34She was my fifth child.
08:37My boys used to say all the time, she was like the daughter I never had.
08:43When Matilda got sick, and she went downhill very, very quickly,
08:48and it was quite debilitating.
08:51Pete had to pick her up to take her out to the toilet and things like that.
08:54I couldn't pick her up.
08:56I couldn't pick her up.
08:58I couldn't lift her.
08:59I couldn't...
08:59I couldn't help her in any way.
09:02I was always focusing on a smaller dog, but...
09:06I like the quiet side of a greyhound.
09:11There was one particular time with Matilda, it was a long seizure.
09:16It just wasn't stopping.
09:17It was really long.
09:19And I thought, she's got to get help.
09:22She's got to get to the vet.
09:23This is going to be really bad.
09:25And it dawned on me that I couldn't get her there.
09:28Because I couldn't pick her up and put her in the car and take her.
09:32I felt useless.
09:35Like a bit of a failure.
09:37Yeah.
09:41I was just thinking...
09:42Oh, jeez, don't start now.
09:44A bit late in life for that.
09:46Shut up.
09:47Shut up.
09:47The size of a greyhound on our bed.
09:50Mmm.
09:51Great.
09:54So this is Donna.
09:55She's a five-year-old greyhound.
09:57Go!
09:58Get it!
09:59Get it!
09:59Let it go!
10:01She's not interested.
10:03Donna loves to play with her toys and she really, really enjoys her walks.
10:07So with greyhounds, they actually only really need one short burst of energy.
10:12So they don't actually need a lot of exercise.
10:16Donna!
10:16Donna is really quite a social dog, both with other dogs and people.
10:20She certainly loves to be around her people, but she also does enjoy her own space as well
10:24that she can escape to.
10:25I think she's definitely got a bright future ahead of her.
10:28I think she'll make her family very happy.
10:32Greyhound.
10:34Coming out.
10:39A greyhound will probably be far less likely to be your shadow though.
10:43Mmm.
10:45Having a dog for us, it adds a layer to our relationship because we've got something to
10:50talk about.
10:51It's, you should have seen what they did this today or, you know, we've got something that
10:55we both, um, look after.
10:58I miss having that person that's always, always happy to see you, regardless.
11:05Are you ready?
11:06Come on.
11:08Here we go.
11:09Uh-huh.
11:10Look for it.
11:12He's gone.
11:15You are right.
11:16Hey guys, how are you going?
11:17Good, thanks.
11:18Hi.
11:26Lucky we've got a big lounge in the caravan too.
11:29Mmm.
11:30You ready?
11:31After spending over 200 days at AWL, today could be the day greyhound Donna heads to
11:37her new home.
11:40You are right.
11:41Hey guys, how are you going?
11:42Good day.
11:43Hi.
11:44I'm Brittany and this is Donna.
11:46Hi Brittany.
11:47Hi Donna.
11:48I'll bring her over for a sniff.
11:50Oh.
11:50She might be a little unsure.
11:52Yeah.
11:53Um, but we'll see how she goes.
11:54Hi sweetie.
11:56She's black.
11:58Hi.
11:58Told ya.
11:59Oh no stuff.
12:00Hi.
12:01Good girl.
12:02Hey.
12:03Yes Donna.
12:04Thanks darling.
12:04Oh, she's so cute.
12:08Not only do I miss Matilda herself, cause she was an amazing dog.
12:14I, I miss not having another being to worry about or to look after or the baby and yeah, I'm,
12:22I'm lost.
12:24Um, I'm struggling a little bit.
12:26Do you want a treat?
12:27Here you go.
12:29Ooh.
12:31Unless she's smelling you.
12:33Donna.
12:34Yeah.
12:37I think she really likes Pete.
12:40Donna.
12:43It's funny cause obviously Leanne the one on the, he was really keen to get another dog.
12:47Yeah.
12:50That's it.
12:53Dogs seem to pick up on our emotions really easily.
12:57They know when you're feeling down.
13:00They know when it's time to come and sit up beside you.
13:04Ah, good girl.
13:08I had an accident at work.
13:09I had a, uh, drive shaft blow out.
13:13Took out all my right knee.
13:14Do you want that?
13:15Good girl.
13:16Nice and gentle.
13:17Yeah.
13:17She's lost it.
13:18Yep.
13:21Yeah.
13:22I was a very moody bloke once I, um, had the accident and then couldn't go to work
13:27and didn't want to get out of bed.
13:29I don't know.
13:30I don't know what you'd actually call it.
13:32Well, the doctor called it depression and nice, I call it boredom and stuff like that.
13:39Hmm.
13:40And she's chilling with you.
13:42Hmm.
13:42Trying to get a read on Pete, but he's so stoic.
13:47I reckon he's thinking about Matilda.
13:48Yeah.
13:50My aunt was at work.
13:51Yeah.
13:52So I'd just basically sit down and talk to the dog.
13:54It was me getting it off my chest and she was just there and she never actually spoke
13:59to me, but, you know, she'd given me a bark or a, you know, or a growl every now and
14:04then.
14:04Yeah.
14:05All right.
14:05I've heard enough.
14:06Can't get me something to eat.
14:07Are you big enough?
14:09No.
14:10Kiss.
14:11Huh.
14:12You're giving kisses.
14:15That's nice, Pete.
14:17Mm-hmm.
14:17I don't think if she wasn't there, you know, I could have drunk myself stupid, but, um,
14:24I was stupider.
14:28Oh.
14:29You'll have to get back up again.
14:31Oh, yeah.
14:31That'll be the next thing.
14:32I could see that he was not coping, that he was struggling and I couldn't help him.
14:38But, yeah, a dog was helping him.
14:40A dog made him get out of bed every morning and sat beside him on the lounge when he had
14:44really dark days and no one to talk to.
14:47He had a dog to talk to.
14:49So I'm forever grateful to her for that.
14:54Come on.
14:58This part always makes me nervous when the dog's, like, not interested.
15:05What do you reckon?
15:07Huh?
15:08No?
15:18I wonder what dog we'll get.
15:20Yeah, me too.
15:21I am really excited.
15:23Yeah.
15:24I can't wait.
15:25Mm-hmm.
15:27Ivy and her daughter Nina are hoping to expand their pack of two.
15:31Hello, hello.
15:32Hi.
15:33Hi.
15:33My name is Ivy and this is my daughter Nina.
15:36And she's 14.
15:38And do you both always dress the same?
15:40Maybe.
15:41There are times, depends on the mood I would say.
15:44Yeah, today's the day.
15:45Yes.
15:45Today's a very special day.
15:47Yes.
15:47If my daughter Nina is a dog, I would say a chihuahua.
15:53Very, you know, quirky, fun, with a very cute buck.
15:58So, just like my daughter with you.
16:03Now, you ready for a dog?
16:05Yeah.
16:05How long have you been waiting for it now?
16:07I've been waiting for, like, a really long time.
16:08Ever since I moved here, like, around two years ago.
16:11Oh, where'd you both come from?
16:13We come from the Philippines.
16:15Philippines.
16:15Yes.
16:16Oh, wow.
16:17How's the change?
16:18Yes, it's a massive change.
16:20I can imagine.
16:21But Australia's a beautiful country as well, so we feel home.
16:25Oh, I love that.
16:26I love that.
16:27Now we're adding a furry friend to the home.
16:29Yes.
16:30My daughter Nina, she is my mini-me, not just physically, I think,
16:35but I think mentally and emotionally as well.
16:40She's my everything.
16:43Excited.
16:44Me too.
16:57Greyhound Donna is taking her time getting to know Leanne and Pete.
17:02Oh, she's found the treats.
17:04Another bowl of treats there.
17:05Hopefully, they can just look past her initial timidness.
17:12Good girl.
17:14Oh, good girl.
17:16That's the way.
17:18Donna.
17:25Looks like she's quite enjoying it, too.
17:27Definitely.
17:28And she's even put herself in this awkward stance.
17:31Yeah.
17:31Just to be near them.
17:35What do I do?
17:42She didn't even flinch.
17:46Well, they wanted a low-energy dog.
17:48I think I've done a show next to them.
17:50I think we've done that.
17:51More pets, please.
17:53More pets, please.
17:53Mm-hmm.
17:53We gave Matilda a really good life.
17:56She had a great life.
17:58She was spot rotten.
17:59You'll never get another one like that.
18:00No.
18:00But it would be nice to give another dog a life like that, too.
18:07Giving a dog a second chance.
18:09Hey, Donna.
18:10Because we're getting a second chance being a dog family.
18:14Let her have a sniff around.
18:16Mm-hmm.
18:18Yours is.
18:19Mm-hmm.
18:20Zoomie!
18:20Ooh, doom.
18:25Shake it off.
18:26Good girl.
18:28That was a big jump.
18:31Good girl.
18:33Well, I think everyone likes to see the greyhounds when they do the zoomies and they are running
18:36around wagging their tail and I think they expect the greyhounds to be that all the time.
18:40I think, as well, it's even more special when a greyhound does show that zoomy side because
18:47they give nothing away any other time.
18:49So then you go, oh, my God, they're finally, like, showing me something.
18:53Um, how do you guys feel about taking her for a little bit of a walk?
18:55Yes.
18:55Definitely.
18:56She can be a little bit timid when it comes to walking, though, like, especially here.
19:00Lots of noises and stuff.
19:01Yeah.
19:01That's all right.
19:02I'll have a go, then.
19:04Good girl.
19:06Good job, Donna.
19:09No stalling yet.
19:11This way.
19:13This way.
19:14Hey.
19:15Good girl.
19:18Come on, Donna.
19:21Come on.
19:21Go for a walk.
19:22Off lead, actually, she's very good.
19:24I think she's just not used to being on a collar lead.
19:26No.
19:28I'll just let her sit there for a seat.
19:29It's all right.
19:30Oh, it's hard to watch.
19:32Hey.
19:33Just wait.
19:33Come on.
19:34Come on.
19:34That's a way.
19:34Come on.
19:36Come on.
19:36It's a bit scary.
19:38You might have to pick her up.
19:39Hmm.
19:40The fact that I have to try and pick her up, this is going to be a bit too much
19:44for them.
19:44Yeah.
19:45It is one thing they're going to have to take on board.
19:53Oh, you poor thing.
19:56What about me?
19:58The new way of walking the dog.
20:00Oh, right.
20:03Oh, I wouldn't be able to walk her on my own.
20:05Do you reckon I'd be able to lift her up?
20:07No.
20:08No.
20:09That's something I've got to think about.
20:12Just taking the dog for a carry.
20:23After settling in Australia, Ivy and Nina are keen for a furry friend to join in their
20:29new life.
20:31It's quite a big day for you guys.
20:33How are you feeling?
20:34Really excited.
20:36Yeah.
20:36You know, it's just like the two of us, so it's nicer to like, you know, expand our
20:39family.
20:40Yeah.
20:41Like a new best friend, a new child.
20:44Yeah.
20:45And what makes now the right time for you both?
20:49She's already old enough to help me take care of the dog.
20:52And at the same time, like, you know, it's teaching her to be more responsible.
20:58Like teaching her how to take care.
21:00Yeah.
21:00Like taking a dog is similar as taking care of a person.
21:04Yeah.
21:04Yeah.
21:05I do give Nina the world.
21:07But I always like to teach her a lesson or give her something to think of or think about.
21:13Um, that way she just wouldn't like, you know, like grow up as a spoiled brat.
21:19And what kind of dog are you looking for?
21:21A small dog that's maybe like still a puppy.
21:24So I get to spend as much time as possible with it.
21:26Yeah.
21:27I would like a Frenchie.
21:29Okay.
21:29I really like chihuahuas.
21:31I really like chihuahuas.
21:32Chihuahuas.
21:32Okay.
21:32Oh, okay.
21:34Yeah.
21:34Have you guys had any rescues before?
21:36Yes.
21:37In the Philippines.
21:38I used to adopt stray dogs.
21:40Oh.
21:41Um, yeah.
21:41Yeah.
21:41I really like animals and I really like helping, especially like dogs.
21:45Because like, you know, for me every dog or every animal deserves a home.
21:49I always put myself in the dog's shoe.
21:53Like, just makes me feel really sad.
21:56Like, oh, it makes me cry.
21:57Just makes me feel really sad to like, you know, if that was me and I don't have anyone,
22:03that's so sad.
22:04I just want to help.
22:06When you get in the pen today, when are you going to know it's just right?
22:10Um, I always believe that it's the dog that selects its owner.
22:14Mmm.
22:14So, maybe the moment the dog comes in and just lick us, we'll be like, oh my god.
22:26What little small fella can we get?
22:28Well, a favourite of mine is little Poet, who is a gorgeous girl.
22:34Oh, Poet.
22:37Nina did say that she did like chihuahuas.
22:40Yeah.
22:40So, she's currently three months old.
22:42She's a two-hour mixed breed.
22:44She's a social butterfly and a very quick learner.
22:48Her favourite things are snuggles at bedtime and playing with other dogs.
22:52She's a really good choice.
22:53I guess the only thing we have to think about is just that age of toilet training,
22:57being in an apartment.
22:58There'll have to be a bit of work there.
22:59Yeah.
23:00So, she did say she liked French Bulldogs.
23:03We don't have any French Bulldogs, but we do have Freddy.
23:06Freddy!
23:09He's been in the shelter for a few weeks now.
23:11About a year old.
23:13He's a British Bulldog.
23:14Fred was surrendered to us by his owners who could no longer care for him due to a breakdown
23:18in their relationship.
23:20He's an extrovert whose personality can be very adventurous and bold.
23:25But I think maybe his size is a bit bigger than what they're looking for.
23:28He's a big boy.
23:29Yeah.
23:29He'd be like, yeah, mid 20 kilos, I'd say.
23:32Oh, really that big?
23:32Sure.
23:34So, we've got a beautiful poet.
23:35I think poet's a great choice.
23:36Yeah, for sure.
23:37I'm a poet.
23:38Poet it is.
23:39Bye-bye.
23:41All right.
23:42We found you a little girl.
23:44Oh.
23:46Her name is Poet.
23:48She's a cute little chihuahua mix.
23:50Oh.
23:50And she is a puppy.
23:53Oh.
23:54Her favourite thing to do at night is like snuggle on your bed with you, kind of on the pillow.
23:59She like gets up real close to you and has a sleep with you, which is really cute.
24:02Can't wait for night time.
24:04Yeah.
24:05The cuddles are the best.
24:06Yay.
24:07Excited?
24:09Yes.
24:10All right.
24:11Should we go meet poet?
24:12Definitely.
24:13Awesome.
24:13Let's go.
24:14Have fun.
24:16Yay.
24:19That's nice.
24:20Ooh, and a cute name too.
24:21Mm-hmm.
24:22Poet.
24:25Look at you.
24:26Oh, yes.
24:27Isis.
24:27Isis.
24:28Isis.
24:29Isis.
24:31Isis.
24:31This is Poet.
24:33She is 12 weeks old and she's a two hour cross.
24:36Hi, guys.
24:37You look like your dad.
24:39So Poet was a transfer from another branch with her siblings.
24:44Poet does have very big ears.
24:46She has a lot of growing to do into them.
24:49Yay.
24:51Woohoo.
24:52She does have a really, really high energy drive.
24:56She'll run around a lot, but she does get tired quite quickly.
25:01We're going to find you a new home soon.
25:03Yes.
25:04Yes.
25:05Yes.
25:06I can't wait.
25:07Hopefully the moment she gets in, she'll just go straight to us.
25:11Yeah, hopefully.
25:12I came to Australia in 2018.
25:16Should I open the door or should I?
25:18My upbringing in the Philippines was very conservative.
25:24Having boyfriends was a bit difficult and after a few years when I got a little bit older,
25:32I somehow like went astray and then got pregnant.
25:37Hi, Poet.
25:40Nina unfortunately never met her dad.
25:45I actually thought he will be my husband.
25:47And when I got pregnant, he doesn't want to have a baby.
25:50So I decided to leave and raise her on my own.
25:54Like your dream come true or dream come true.
25:57Like a chihuahua.
25:59So when I moved here, I was a single mom navigating through my new Australian life.
26:06Like you couldn't just imagine, like when you're on that stage, you'll be like,
26:11Oh my God, how will I raise a child on my own?
26:14And that was when she started asking me like, Oh, can we just have a dog?
26:19I'm so lonely.
26:20I don't have friends yet.
26:22Imagine if she would like us.
26:24I'll be like, Oh, going home with a puppy.
26:28At times, my daughter Nina is a little bit quiet and just a little bit shy.
26:33That's exciting.
26:35I think the energy of the dog, what the dog will bring, the energy, this love, this fun, this playfulness,
26:42will help her open up and be more confident of herself.
26:46Are you ready?
26:48Are you ready?
26:49Hey, Poet comes.
26:50Here she comes.
26:51They're going to love her.
26:53Yeah, they're coming, they're coming, they're coming.
26:55They're coming, they're coming.
27:01Hi guys.
27:02Hi guys.
27:02So cute.
27:03Okay, I want to cry.
27:13Ivy is hoping Chihuahua Pup Poet will be the best friend Nina has been longing for.
27:22Hi guys.
27:23She's so cute.
27:25This is Little Miss Poet.
27:27I had to carry her in because she's not exactly used to the lead yet.
27:34Papa Dampi, you guys.
27:37Hello.
27:39Oh.
27:43Hi, Poet.
27:45Hello.
27:47Just walk past me.
27:50Once you become a parent, like, your world just changes.
27:53Come here.
27:56You just go along and then eventually you'll be like, looking back like, oh my, like, I did
28:01that.
28:01I never failed to, like, I was, I'm so proud to say that I was able to give her everything
28:07that she needs.
28:08Come here.
28:10Poet.
28:12Oh, crying.
28:18Oh, she's whining a little bit.
28:21Poor little poet.
28:23Being a single mom, and I have to do both roles for her, so it made me love her more.
28:31Because I have to make sure that she never misses a part of her life because it's just
28:36me.
28:49I think my mom, like, she's a really kind person.
28:54She's really caring and generous.
28:56She means the entire, like, world to me.
28:59But ever since I got here in Australia, I felt really lonely.
29:05If you have a dog, no matter where you are, it can just help you feel less alone and make
29:12you feel like you have a companion with you by her side.
29:15Come here.
29:16Come here.
29:17She hasn't really gone up to Ivy and Nina.
29:20Hmm.
29:21Don't move.
29:22Do not move.
29:23Because every time you get up, she runs away.
29:27I've never really seen this from a puppy.
29:29No.
29:30Is she meant to be doing that?
29:35She's trying to find a way to escape.
29:37Ivy definitely was saying she was looking for that spa.
29:41Yeah.
29:42I think they're still waiting on that.
29:43Yeah.
29:45We'll let her explore.
29:46Yeah.
29:47And let's see.
29:56Oi.
29:57You excited?
29:58Yeah.
29:59Damien wants to find a friend for his two-year-old Cocker Spaniel, Laika.
30:03This way.
30:04Good girl.
30:06G'day there.
30:07Welcome to AWL.
30:08How's it going?
30:09Good, good.
30:09I'm Damien.
30:10I'm Mike.
30:11Nice to meet you, Mike.
30:11That's Laika.
30:13Laika.
30:13Laika?
30:14Yep.
30:15Laika, it's the name of the first dog that went into space.
30:20Oh, right.
30:21Following in the footsteps of greatness.
30:23Yeah.
30:24Laika, she's super socialised.
30:26Loves everyone, loves every other dog.
30:29And yeah, always curious.
30:31She's always wanting to know what's going on.
30:34Always wanting to explore.
30:37So are you here for Laika or are you here for yourself to get a new dog?
30:40Both.
30:40Both.
30:41Both.
30:41My intention's always been, once I was ready to get dogs, was to get two.
30:45Obviously start with one.
30:47If it goes all good, move up to the other.
30:49Yep.
30:49I work from home.
30:51Hey.
30:52It's alright.
30:53She wants to play with us.
30:55I do notice she gets bored.
30:57You know, getting a friend for her, I've realised is important at this time.
31:30Yeah.
31:31Yeah, a toy.
31:32Try.
31:34She likes that.
31:39There we go.
31:40There we go.
31:41Can I get it?
31:42This is her playful side that we've been waiting to see.
31:46Yeah.
31:47So cute.
31:49Come on.
31:50Come on.
31:51Come on.
31:52Come on.
31:54Come on.
31:59If she's mad, it's a dream come true, I would say.
32:04The dog will complete our family.
32:06Yeah, and carry her.
32:08Support the bum.
32:09Yes.
32:10Aww.
32:16Kisses.
32:17Kisses.
32:18She follows you when you walk around.
32:20She's nice.
32:22Show.
32:23I'm looking for my dog to be, like, the closest best friend that I could ever have.
32:28And, like, I want our bond to be absolutely unbreakable.
32:32Call her.
32:33Poet.
32:34Poet.
32:35Why is this going weird?
32:37Yeah.
32:37She's actually a bit more aloof, I think, than what they're looking for.
32:41Yeah.
32:41And Ivy did say on the couch that she'll know it's the right dog because the dog's going
32:46to choose her.
32:47Yeah.
32:47I don't think she's really chosen just yet.
32:49No.
32:50And I think the poet, as a puppy too, seemed quite aloof.
32:52It's a bit surprising.
32:53But, yeah, this is going to be a tricky one.
32:56Poet.
32:57Yeah.
32:58I'm really hoping Poet would choose us as her new family.
33:03Right now, I'm just not really sure if she will, so that actually worries me.
33:11Try walking without the toy.
33:12I'll try.
33:12Just using the toy to get her attention.
33:14Poet.
33:15Poet.
33:25Poet.
33:26Damien's ready for another dog, but it will need a wolf of approval from Laika.
33:31Hi, Laika.
33:33Hi.
33:34Hi.
33:34Go say hi.
33:36What does your ideal dog look like?
33:39In terms of breed, I'm not super picky.
33:44Not something tiny like a Chihuahua, like that small, but I mean she gets along great
33:49with anything from Jack Russell size up to around about what I was thinking would be
33:54max maybe 15 kilo size.
33:56Okay, great.
33:56The main thing is it's a fit for myself and the dog that I'm getting.
34:01Do you mind me asking, are you in the chair full time, like the dog obviously has to
34:05fit around that?
34:06Yeah.
34:07Okay, alright.
34:08I have osteogenesis imperfecta, which is a condition of the bones that means my bones are very brittle.
34:17I've had over 500 fractures, 69 operations, I spent more than half my childhood in and
34:26out of hospitals.
34:28The dogs are dogs.
34:29Yeah.
34:30Their attitude, they lift people up.
34:32she's incredibly intuitive.
34:34Yeah.
34:35So if I'm having a bad day or a good day, you know, she adapts perfectly.
34:40So when I was born, the doctors basically gave my parents a prognosis of two weeks at most.
34:48And then when I lived past that, they said it'd be maximum 10, then it became 25.
34:58So now I'm 45 and they can't get rid of me.
35:07We have Damien and his dog like her.
35:13He can't have something too pulley or too big because he does have the brittle bone syndrome.
35:16Oh, okay.
35:18Yeah.
35:18The first one that comes to mind for me is Deedee.
35:22Deedee, yeah.
35:22Deedee.
35:23Deedee.
35:24Little kitty.
35:25Little baby.
35:28She's one and a bit years old.
35:29Yeah.
35:30Deedee.
35:30She's a dissected female fox terrier cross.
35:32She was brought into a regional pound as an unclaimed stray.
35:36Deedee.
35:37She's a cute little bouncy girl with the biggest smile, the quickest pocket rocket you'll ever
35:41meet.
35:42She is open to meeting other dogs.
35:45She did present mild separation anxiety in her behaviour assessment.
35:50I did her assessment.
35:52Yeah, okay.
35:52She is one of the most hilarious dogs that I've ever met.
35:55Yeah, yeah.
35:55She was doing these huge zoomies.
35:58Go, Deedee.
35:59Well, Deedee's a really good choice.
36:01I think the only thing we've just got to take consideration is probably the size around
36:03the wheelchair.
36:04Yeah.
36:05The only other dog I can think of is Roley.
36:07Roley.
36:08He's so cute.
36:09He's very cute.
36:10He's just under a year old Jack Russell Cross.
36:13Roley was brought to the AWL as an unclaimed stray.
36:16He would benefit from ongoing training to reinforce good behaviours and help manage his separation
36:20anxiety.
36:21He's intelligent and eager to please a true lap dog at heart.
36:25Gorgeous boy.
36:26I think Roley would be a good choice.
36:27Perfect.
36:28Roley it is.
36:28Sounds good.
36:29Let's go.
36:30Alright.
36:30See ya.
36:37So we had a good chat and we think we've found you and Laika a new friend.
36:41Awesome.
36:42Obviously we've had to take into consideration size and obviously dog sociability.
36:47We think we've fit those two things really, really well.
36:51Yeah.
36:51Awesome.
36:51So we found someone who's really dog social.
36:54Social with people as well.
36:55Yep.
36:56Nice.
36:57Seems to love everyone that he meets.
37:00Yep.
37:01So it's a boy.
37:02Yeah.
37:03He's almost a year old.
37:05Okay.
37:05Yeah.
37:05So I guess like the training and effort that you've put into Laika would be something
37:11that you'd need to do with him as well.
37:12His name is Roley.
37:14Roley.
37:14Okay.
37:15Nice.
37:16Nice.
37:16So he's a little Jack Russell Terrier cross.
37:19Okay.
37:20Nice.
37:20Yeah.
37:20Nice.
37:21Good breed.
37:21Yeah.
37:22So we're hoping that he's going to be a lovely dog to jump up and sit in your lap and
37:26chill
37:26with you guys and then also get some energy out at the park and going for walks.
37:31Yep.
37:31Keen to meet.
37:32Yeah.
37:33So what we're going to do is I'm going to take Laika into the room with us so you can
37:37get to meet the dog.
37:39And then I will bring her in to have a meet with you.
37:41Yeah.
37:41Perfect.
37:42Yep.
37:42Come on chicken.
37:43Hello darling.
37:45Yep.
37:45No worries.
37:47Thanks lady.
37:47Good luck.
37:51Trying to find my place in society.
37:53Being different.
37:55It's been a bit of a journey but it's something that I've embraced.
38:05For myself I don't focus on what people say.
38:09You've just got to put your head down and you go by what you think you can do.
38:17Was he excited?
38:18I saw it in his eye.
38:19The twinkle.
38:20He knows that even if he likes the dog if the dogs don't get on it's not going to be
38:26a match.
38:30I'm here I have Rolly.
38:32He's a Jack Russell Terrier and he's only 11 months old.
38:35Go.
38:37Rolly is a very excitable little puppy.
38:39Cheerio!
38:40What are you doing?
38:41What are you doing?
38:43What are you doing?
38:43What are you doing?
38:44Jack Russells are very high energy dogs.
38:46They will go probably all day.
38:49Is it?
38:49Yes.
38:51I think someone that is able to do lots of training would be good for Rolly.
38:55He's still a puppy and he's still learning.
38:57Are you rolling?
38:58I just hope he finds his forever home.
39:00Yay!
39:01Good boy!
39:02You're so clever.
39:06I love her with all my heart.
39:08Lyca's, um, she's, yeah, she changed my whole life.
39:13Before Lyca was just getting up to work, you know, working long hours, long weeks.
39:18Hi Rolly.
39:20She's allowed me to rethink what my priorities are, what I need out of life to be happy and
39:25she's just done that being herself.
39:29And it's something I've learnt now, um, with one dog.
39:34And, yeah, I'd, I'd be really excited to just bring that in with two dogs.
39:40Come on.
39:47Oh, hi.
39:49He's very keen.
39:51How about Rolly?
39:53This is nice.
39:54He's going to stay up to him.
39:55Say hello.
39:56Hi.
39:58He's a cutie.
39:59Yeah, he is.
40:00He was, like, pretty confident coming up.
40:02Yeah.
40:02He hasn't noticed, like, being, um, aversive to the chair or anything.
40:06I'll give you some treats.
40:07He absolutely loves treats.
40:09No worries.
40:09He knows how to sit so far.
40:11Does he?
40:11Oh, and he's up on the bench.
40:13Jeez.
40:14Hey, Rolly.
40:16Here, sit.
40:17Sit.
40:18Sit.
40:19Good boy.
40:20Good boy.
40:22Eh?
40:22Good boy.
40:23Biggest challenges for me always has been,
40:25um, the opinions of people and the assumptions of people.
40:31Ready?
40:32Ready?
40:32Ready?
40:33Go.
40:35People see things and they automatically shoebox it in their head.
40:43With the rescue dogs.
40:45Some dogs come from not nice backgrounds, but I've learnt in life, don't judge a book.
40:54Go.
40:55I'm certainly hoping that I can give it a better journey for the next part of its life.
41:02Good boy.
41:03Yeah.
41:04You've got a good temperament, don't you?
41:06Well behaved.
41:08Roly's been fantastic.
41:10Yeah.
41:10Like, he's, he's gone straight up to him.
41:13He's super engaged.
41:14He's happy with the handling.
41:16It'll be interesting to see how Laika gets on with him though.
41:19It will be.
41:20Hi, how are you doing?
41:21You look very happy.
41:24Alright, we're gonna be bringing Laika in to do a dog to dog.
41:31Hello.
41:33I'm excited.
41:34Come on.
41:34What we'll do is we'll do some drive bites.
41:37Yeah.
41:37Okay.
41:42Come on.
41:45You're okay.
41:47Like, we've obviously had Roly meet other dogs before.
41:50Yeah.
41:51He's been social, but you can see that he gets quite frustrated.
41:55Yeah.
41:55I know this is a stressful environment, which doesn't help, but yeah, it's just quite
41:59surprised us.
42:00Let's do another one quite quickly actually.
42:03You're alright.
42:04You're alright.
42:04You're okay.
42:05Good job.
42:06Hey.
42:08Come on.
42:10He's obviously not showing any social, not many social behaviours at all.
42:14Same thing?
42:15Yep.
42:16Okay.
42:19I'm not comfortable to put these dogs together at the moment, to be completely honest.
42:22No.
42:23That's a no for me.
42:25Hey.
42:32Hey.
42:34Obviously, unfortunately, it's not going to work.
42:36Yep.
42:36Like, the reaction from Roly is just not something that I want to persist with.
42:41So, I'll get Becky to take him back and see if she can get Dee Dee out for us.
42:46Yep.
42:46And we can have another meet.
42:47No worries.
42:50After meeting Roly, the matchmakers introduce Fox Terrier Dee Dee to Damien and Laika to
42:55see if there's a better connection.
42:58Dee Dee, we know she's super social, super loving, so hopefully this is the right fit.
43:03Hi, little sweetie.
43:04We'll do the same thing, Becky.
43:05Hello.
43:05You're a cutie.
43:06Oh, hello.
43:08This is good.
43:10Hi.
43:10Yeah, hello.
43:12Hi, Deeds.
43:13Hi.
43:14We'll do the same thing.
43:15Yeah.
43:17Yeah.
43:18Good job.
43:19Aw, that's nice.
43:22This is obviously a much better start, that's for sure.
43:25You can let them meet if they want to.
43:28Laika's a lot more interested in this dog.
43:29Yeah.
43:32Like...
43:33Oh, woo, woo, woo, woo, woo.
43:35That's her play with me bark.
43:37Her having someone that she can just get up and run around with, go out the back and bark
43:42at the neighbours with, I think it'd be just great for her first and foremost.
43:48But also, it gives me that option when I'm not feeling great on a particular day.
43:53I know that she's got an outlet where she can get some of that energy out.
43:58I like to see the dogs obviously interacting, engaging, having that play behaviour.
44:04Yeah, here we go.
44:08And just being neutral and relaxing around each other.
44:13Yeah.
44:13Beautiful.
44:13That's exactly what I wanted to see.
44:15One of the reasons we didn't go for her originally was because we thought,
44:21is she just a little bit too small?
44:23Yeah.
44:24That's what I'm wondering.
44:25That's my only thing at the moment.
44:27Yeah.
44:27Aw, that's not fair.
44:30Just worried about the size more so.
44:34So some dogs are scared of her wheelchair, some are not.
44:37I do worry whether there might be a risk that Diddy might get hurt or it might be too much
44:43for her.
44:43But yeah, the size is certainly something I'm pondering at the moment.
44:49That's so naughty.
44:50So naughty.
44:51She's playing.
44:52Is this all play?
44:53Yeah, yeah.
44:54Yeah.
45:04My first impression when that yellow door opened and I saw Poet, I was in love immediately.
45:12But then every time we make like, you know, slight little movement, she suddenly like run away
45:19or just hide and started crying.
45:22It's like, oh, poor baby.
45:24The moment me and my mom laid eyes on Poet, we knew that we were going to take her home.
45:29And so we did.
45:32Poets, come here, come here, poets, come here.
45:34She actually ticked all of the boxes that we were looking for.
45:39Hello.
45:40She always wags her tail every time either Nina and I get home.
45:47Oh, hi, Poet.
45:49It was my idea to get Poet these cute little outfits because I, like, Poet's already cute,
45:55but I want to make her like even cuter.
46:01She has this very big personality that I really like and she just makes us happy.
46:07Kisses to mommy.
46:08I couldn't ask for anything more.
46:10Poet is just perfect.
46:20When Donna walked in through those doors, she was very quiet, very timid.
46:27It basically definitely wasn't what we were looking for.
46:31I was concerned with those frozen moments she was having.
46:37The only way we could finish the walk was you had to pick her up in the carrier.
46:42And I couldn't pick that dog up.
46:43Mm-mm.
46:44It's not going to work.
46:46Alrighty, we're all packed.
46:48Are you pair ready to go?
46:50Hey?
46:50You ready to go?
46:51Going to go get in the car?
46:52And of course we brought her home.
46:57Don't get in the car then.
47:00But she's no longer Donna.
47:02She's now Daisy.
47:05Daisy.
47:08She's settled in with the two of us straight away.
47:11Straight on the bed.
47:13Thank you very much.
47:14This is mine.
47:15Wait a minute.
47:15She's starting to come out of her shell a lot more.
47:20Now, I take her for walks on my own.
47:24They take a little while because she's still getting used to the environment.
47:30Come on.
47:31I think the matchmakers were spot on.
47:34We thought we knew what we wanted.
47:37But they knew what we needed.
47:41Turns out I needed a greyhound.
47:45You won't get movement out of her now for two or three hours I reckon.
47:52These kaikki ha's gold.
47:54You got to her.
47:54No?
48:01I'm going to fit the precio.
48:02Yeah, baby. You're
