00:30She's very true to who she is. It's one of my favorite kid photos of her.
00:34Yeah, she's like aspiring to be a model.
00:39Like her beauty is like unmatched, you know, like you can see, you know, the light in her eyes.
00:46This is like my favorite photo of you two.
00:53I am the crier in my family and I don't apologize for it anymore because there are tears of strength
00:58now.
01:00And it's for her.
01:02My name is Skye Roberts. I am the younger brother of Virginia Roberts-Jufre.
01:06My name is Amanda Roberts and I'm the sister-in-law of Virginia Roberts.
01:11When I hear Jeffrey Epstein's name, it makes my skin crawl.
01:15He changed our family's lives forever.
01:18She suffered at the hands of him and he sex trafficked her.
01:23We're at this tipping point. We are at that crossroads where we decide which path we're going to take.
01:32Virginia took down a prince and that is one for the history books.
01:44Here's a man who was a prince. He's a queen's favorite son.
01:49It felt like an open secret.
01:51Now a complete pariah.
01:53More controversy brewing today over Prince Andrew and his links to a convicted sex offender.
01:58When we talk about these three million documents, what more is still to come?
02:02The shocking royal arrest. The former Prince Andrew taken into custody.
02:06You continue to read these emails. The biggest problem is that Andrew is a liar.
02:10Deep inside the palace walls, the royal press team are panicking.
02:15We're living in what is an absolutely modern, 21st century royal scandal.
02:28It doesn't seem to be a day that goes by that there are not new revelations.
02:35I've been covering the royal family for 25, 36 years.
02:39And I personally think this is the biggest scandal they've had on my watch.
02:44And that includes the time of Charles and Diana.
02:47The story just grows and grows and grows.
02:54People have been demanding the full Epstein file for years.
02:57Then in late January, the US Department of Justice suddenly dropped another major batch of documents.
03:03Three million documents containing some of the deepest secrets of the Epstein files.
03:09Graphic accusations of young women and girls being trafficked to men in rich and powerful positions.
03:16A member of the royal family in photos, crouching over a young woman's body.
03:21The thing is, everyone knows his face.
03:25But also buried in here are emails between a sexual predator and a literal prince.
03:31Epstein telling Andrew,
03:33I have a friend who I think you might enjoy having dinner with.
03:38The Duke responds, give her my contact details to get in touch.
03:42Descriptions of women, Russian, clever, beautiful.
03:46Five other stunning head heads.
03:48We will all just have to play with ourselves.
03:51Andrew asking if someone has found me some new inappropriate friends.
04:03What I find extraordinary is not necessarily that Andrew had the arrogance to do this.
04:10It's that he was bringing a convicted sex offender into places, into the Queen's private homes.
04:17And nobody said anything.
04:20This is such a fall from grace for Andrew.
04:23There is no coming back from this.
04:25This is incredibly serious.
04:31This young man, who is destined to be familiar with the camera all his life, certainly isn't camera shy.
04:37The man formerly known as Prince Andrew, he is the Queen's second son and her third child.
04:46There was quite a big age difference between Charles and Anne, and then Andrew and Edward.
04:52So the Queen had actually more settled into her role as monarch, so she could devote a bit more time
04:58to her younger two children.
04:59There was clearly a really, really special bond between the late Queen and her son.
05:10Just like actors and actresses, those who are young and beautiful or handsome catch the eye of the population.
05:18And Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, as Prince Andrew, was very dashing.
05:25He was in the Royal Navy.
05:27He was known as a Falklands War hero.
05:30We all remember those iconic images of him getting off the ship, and he had that red rose in between
05:36his teeth.
05:37And the crowds were roaring their approval.
05:39He gave a new meaning to H.R.H., his royal heartthrob.
05:45Andrew has had a reputation in Britain which is not completely dissimilar to a lot of the spares, if you
05:51like.
05:51They're a little bit more wild, a little bit more carefree, that they love to party.
05:55They're almost slightly damaged.
05:57It's sort of party prince, playboy lifestyle.
06:00He got the nickname in the British tabloids as Randy Andy because he had a series of very, very beautiful
06:07girlfriends.
06:08The American actress, Ku Stark, absolutely glamorous in the 80s.
06:15And then he was introduced to Sarah Ferguson by the late Princess of Wales, Princess Diana.
06:22Do you remember what he said?
06:23Absolutely. But I'm not telling you.
06:27She was a very boisterous and enthusiastic woman.
06:30She seemed to bring a freshness and excitement.
06:33She took his heart.
06:34I loved it today. I was very proud of you.
06:36And it was a modern-day fairy tale for the two, and the public loved it.
06:49Why do you want me to kiss you?
06:50Don, hurry up.
06:50Why?
06:51Hurry up! Stop filming, quick!
06:53You're a monster.
06:54But what's funny, and perhaps sad at the same time, is that I think people remember the scandals surrounding their
07:03marriage rather than the marriage itself.
07:05The notorious pictures spread all over the papers.
07:08I mean, who could forget the toe-sucking scandal?
07:12The Duchess of York is lying on a sun lounger, topless, with her toes being sucked by her financial advisor.
07:22The Rawls don't have their toes sucked by outsiders, but if they do, it's not expected that the proof will
07:28be published by the vulgar tabloid press.
07:30I didn't think that we'd ever get bored. I didn't think that we'd ever get bored. I didn't think that
07:33it would be like that or that the press would dig a trench for three days and live in it.
07:38What was also worse is that her daughters were there, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice.
07:43It was utterly humiliating for her, and humiliating for Andrew as well.
07:49The Duke and the Duchess of York, better known as Prince Andrew and Fergie, are planning a formal separation.
07:55For someone who's really always been pining for love and acknowledgement and approval, what could be better than standing on
08:01the balcony in front of billions of people shouting at me and screaming and clapping?
08:09And so I'm sure it went to my head, and I sort of lost my way.
08:16If you look at his life and what he's achieved, it just kind of fizzled away. There was no role
08:22for him. He didn't know what he stood for.
08:25And we see that play out with all the spares. It is a recipe for sadness and forlornment and listlessness.
08:34Over the years, it's become very clear that there's been a lot of money spent on what seemed to be
08:41a very lavish lifestyle.
08:42I think there's always been a certain amount of mystery as to where the money has come from, how they
08:46have afforded certain things.
08:48Andrew wants to feel like he's a glamorous, sexy guy. How does he do it? You have to pay for
08:55it.
08:58Andrew was introduced to Epstein at some point in the 90s via Ghislaine Maxwell, who was his friend.
09:05I think they were enthralled by him. He was Machiavellian. He was a Rasputin. He was extraordinary, and not in
09:13a good way.
09:13Epstein wanted access. He wanted to be in the innermost inner circle. He did that through mixing with aristocracy, mixing
09:22with royalty.
09:23He was weaseling his way into royal circles.
09:27Andrew wanted access to beautiful women. He wanted a party lifestyle.
09:30He wanted to get away from the stuffiness of English royal life.
09:39I mean, I think what's been so illuminating about these emails is that you really get a sense of this
09:46free flow of communication and information between Andrew and Epstein.
09:53Buckingham Palace is mentioned quite a lot in these emails. Andrew offers it as a location for a private dinner
09:59with Epstein.
09:59There's almost a sense that Andrew has this, what is a publicly funded, official property at his disposal in a
10:06personal capacity.
10:09He emails the Duke requesting private time together. Lots of privacy.
10:16These emails really look as if Andrew and Epstein are dating.
10:22I don't know what sort of power or information that Jeffrey Epstein held over Sarah and Andrew, but clearly it
10:33was something, enough of something to keep that relationship going.
10:36What's really shocking is that it appears that the two men remained really close, even as Epstein was facing pretty
10:44serious criminal charges.
10:46Epstein was being investigated for sex offences involving girls as young as 14.
10:52And in 2008, he reached what is now viewed as a very controversial plea deal to plead guilty to charges
10:59of soliciting a minor.
11:01And as a result of that, he had to serve 18 months in prison and he was also placed under
11:06house arrest.
11:07After he serves his time, he now has to register as a sex offender. Think about that.
11:12You would think that people in these very high places would not want to have close relationships with said person,
11:24particularly pretty close to the time of when it happened.
11:28And what these emails show is Prince Andrew was one of the first people that Jeffrey Epstein reached out to
11:34when he was released and immediately is talking about sending women to it.
11:43In that email exchange, Epstein told the Duke about a 26-year-old Russian woman and said that he gave
11:50that woman Andrew's email.
11:53The Duke replied, that was quick. How are you? Good to be free?
11:57The date on this email is August 12, 2010.
12:01This is just days after Epstein had been released from house arrest.
12:06In 2010, Epstein is a free man. At this point, he's not really a household name.
12:12His crimes are certainly not front and centre on the global stage.
12:17But all of that is about to change, thanks to Prince Andrew.
12:22And a walk in the park that became very notorious.
12:33When the story first appeared in the News of the World under the headline Prince and the Pedo with a
12:38photograph of Andrew and Epstein walking in Central Park together, it was a big story.
12:43It was there front and centre.
12:45A picture can tell a thousand words, right?
12:48You know, this is a nightmare for the palace.
12:50It really is absolutely baffling.
12:53How could he still maintain that friendship?
13:08When the photographs came out, it was just like this power back to her.
13:13And she could say, like, I told you, I was telling you the truth.
13:18And the truth will always have a way to surface.
13:22It's difficult to learn about sexual abuse with anybody in your family.
13:30We lived just outside of Palm Beach.
13:32It was in a little town called Loxahatchee, Florida.
13:35That's how she got connected with Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine.
13:38My father was employed at Mar-a-Lago and then she became a spa attendant there.
13:44And that's where, obviously, Ghislaine recruited her.
13:47We always supported her.
13:49I mean, especially my brother and I and Amanda.
13:53I mean, we've always supported her.
13:55I remember her, you know, saying,
13:57Skydy, you're going to see some stuff coming out.
14:00Like, just don't look at it.
14:02She always said, I never want this evil to touch you.
14:05The same evil that touched me in this world.
14:07And so many others.
14:09Virginia Dufresne was perhaps Epstein's most prominent accuser.
14:13She says that she was recruited by Epstein and Maxwell
14:17and that she became Epstein's sex slave, effectively, is what she says.
14:22And she traveled with them, spent time with them,
14:25and she has also made serious accusations against Prince Andrew
14:28accusing him of sexual assault during this time.
14:33Virginia Roberts spoke to the BBC about her allegations.
15:01And of course, she has that now infamous photo of herself
15:04at just 17 years old, in Ghislaine Maxwell's apartment.
15:08It's of her, Maxwell, and Prince Andrew.
15:13Virginia Dufresne alleged that she was trafficked to Prince Andrew
15:17and ended up having sex with him three times.
15:20To be clear, Andrew has always consistently maintained
15:24that he did nothing wrong,
15:25that he never sexually abused or assaulted Virginia Dufresne.
15:29What do you make of Prince Andrew's denials?
15:32Can you comment on that?
15:34He has been outspoken.
15:35He knows exactly what he's done
15:37and I hope he comes clean about it.
15:40Thank you.
15:45In 2011, Andrew stepped back from his role as UK Trade Envoy
15:49due to the controversy surrounding his links to Epstein.
15:52It was a bad situation.
15:54There was a lot of pressure on the palace over this at the time.
15:58Every weekend, there'd be another bit of a story
16:01about the relationship between Epstein and Andrew.
16:04And we were just playing catch-up.
16:07At one point in early 2011,
16:10the pair were apparently emailing.
16:12Epstein wrote to Andrew,
16:14The press is piling on me in the States.
16:16Nothing to do, just want to make sure you're OK.
16:20Prince Andrew responded,
16:28Something that really shocked me about the Epstein files
16:32is that it's not all men.
16:33There are some high-profile, powerful, well-connected women
16:38who show extraordinarily poor judgement.
16:41Andrew's ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, is one of them.
16:45Fergie had a very seemingly quite independent relationship with Epstein.
16:50We know that he paid off £15,000 of her personal debts.
16:54There's an email from Sarah to Epstein from 2011
16:58where Fergie wrote,
17:00You've always been a steadfast, generous,
17:02and supreme friend to me and my family.
17:04What we have seen in the Epstein files
17:06is that it appears that Sarah Ferguson
17:08visited the then-convicted sex offender
17:11with her daughters, Eugenie and Beatrice,
17:14while he was still under house arrest.
17:16It's just such an extraordinary lapse in judgement.
17:20Did she not think how it would look?
17:22It looks like she's endorsing Epstein.
17:25At the time, Fergie issued a public apology
17:28during an interview,
17:29saying that she regretted her relationship with Epstein.
17:32But what we now know from the Epstein files
17:34is that she continued emailing him for a while,
17:37even after that.
17:39I'm sure there was a time when the palace probably thought
17:41that it couldn't get any worse, but it did.
17:45Over the next few years,
17:47this wasn't really front and centre all the time.
17:53But in 2019,
17:55that was the year when everything changed.
17:57In July, officials hit Epstein
18:00with federal charges of sex trafficking
18:03young women and underage girls
18:05and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking.
18:08He's arrested and thrown into a New York City jail.
18:12It took a while to get there.
18:14It took some time to put together the case.
18:17There was a real sense
18:18that these victims, his accusers,
18:20that they were going to get some accountability,
18:23some real accountability.
18:25And then, not long after he was arrested,
18:28Epstein was found dead in jail.
18:31Jeffrey Epstein has died,
18:33an apparent suicide...
18:34There was still this desire for accountability.
18:38And then, in late 2019,
18:41Andrew decided to do
18:42a no-holds-barred interview
18:45about his links to Jeffrey Epstein.
18:49The pitch was,
18:50the country does not think you are an innocent man.
18:53So, in a sense,
18:55this interview was a potential opportunity
18:57to clear his name.
18:58Of course, it turned out very differently.
19:08Did I watch the BBC Newsnight interview?
19:11How can anyone forget it?
19:13Tonight, for the first time,
19:15Prince Andrew speaks out.
19:16It was pompous, it was arrogant,
19:19but worse than all of that,
19:20it was full of lies.
19:22If you imagine the Prince Andrew,
19:23former Prince Andrew brand, in a sense,
19:25someone who had been a war hero,
19:28a glamorous prince,
19:29and now he is forgotten, at best,
19:33and maybe a pariah, at worst.
19:35This interview was a potential opportunity
19:37to clear his name, so to speak.
19:40I wouldn't have advised it.
19:42He chose to do it.
19:44Your Royal Highness,
19:45we've come to Buckingham Palace
19:47in highly unusual circumstances.
19:50When he was asked
19:51about what had happened
19:53with his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein...
19:55Why were you staying
19:56with a convicted sex offender?
19:58Right.
19:58He said that conversation had ceased,
20:01that the relationship had ended.
20:02I went there with the sole purpose
20:04of saying to him
20:05that because he had been convicted,
20:09it was inappropriate
20:10for us to be seen together.
20:12We now know from these emails
20:14that that wasn't the case.
20:16Was that visit, December of 2010,
20:18the only time you saw him
20:21after he was convicted?
20:23Yes. Yeah.
20:23Did you see him or speak to him again?
20:25No.
20:27Actually, contact did continue.
20:30He was emailing Epstein
20:31early in 2011
20:33and throughout 2011
20:34and it's called into question
20:36all the things that he said
20:38in that interview.
20:39Andrew made some extraordinary claims
20:41in the BBC interview.
20:43Some of the claims were shifty,
20:45some of them were outright ludicrous.
20:47She described dancing with you
20:49and you profusely sweating
20:52and that she went on to have baths, possibly.
20:56There's a slight problem
20:57with the sweating
21:00because I have a peculiar medical condition
21:06which is that I don't sweat
21:07or I didn't sweat at the time.
21:10He's sweating in the interview
21:11for goodness sake.
21:12There's so many moments
21:14where I'm just like
21:15he's putting himself
21:16into a corner
21:17and in a trap.
21:19He said repeatedly
21:20that he didn't remember
21:21meeting Virginia and Dufresne.
21:22She provided a photo
21:24of the two of you together.
21:26Yes.
21:26Your arm was around her waist.
21:29Yes.
21:29You've seen the photo.
21:30I've seen the photograph.
21:31How do you explain that?
21:33I can't
21:35because I don't,
21:36I have no,
21:37again,
21:37I have absolutely no memory
21:39of that photograph
21:40ever being taken.
21:41Virginia was laughing
21:43because of how ridiculous it was
21:46and he was fumbling
21:46about his hand on her waist
21:48and all these things.
21:49She was just like,
21:50this is what they do.
21:52It was an absolute car crash.
21:54I remember sitting at home
21:55watching it
21:56with my mouth open
21:58thinking,
21:59could this get any worse?
22:01I took nautily
22:02a photo at the end
22:04of the interview
22:05and Emily looked aghast
22:07and he looked pleased.
22:09Frankly,
22:10Andrew was so thick
22:11that he probably
22:12watched that interview
22:13back and thought
22:14it was fine
22:15because these guys
22:16are so entitled
22:17they think they're going
22:19to get away with it
22:20every time.
22:21Rather than
22:22putting a line
22:23under a story,
22:24drawing a line
22:24under a story,
22:25you've actually
22:25inflamed it,
22:26inflamed it
22:27to the most
22:28enormous proportions.
22:30I anticipated
22:30that this was going
22:31to be car crash,
22:33train wreck television.
22:35In fact,
22:35it was a train wreck
22:36running into a fuel tanker
22:37which just burst
22:38into flames.
22:39It had dawned
22:40on everyone
22:40just how bad
22:41this was
22:41and also I think
22:42how offended
22:43people were
22:44by his attitude
22:45to his links
22:46to Epstein generally.
22:47He can't just
22:48carry on as normal.
22:50This crisis
22:51is not winding down.
22:52Prince Andrew
22:53taking a break
22:53from his royal duties.
22:54Prince Andrew
22:55stripped of his
22:56military titles.
22:57Prince Andrew
22:58settling out of court
22:59for an undisclosed
23:00amount with his accuser
23:01Virginia Roberts
23:02Giuffre.
23:03He does not admit
23:04to assaulting
23:05or even meeting
23:05Giuffre.
23:06Prince no more.
23:07Prince Andrew
23:08officially stripped
23:09of his royal title
23:10and evicted
23:11from his home.
23:12Why did it take
23:13them so long
23:14to act
23:14and to condemn him?
23:16It's all happened
23:17when public interest
23:19has become
23:20so fierce
23:21and so negative
23:22that the royal family
23:23were forced
23:24to act.
23:25He's had all
23:26his titles removed
23:27and he's now
23:28been moved
23:28by the king
23:29from living
23:30in Windsor
23:30out to
23:31effectively
23:32the equivalent
23:33of British Siberia.
23:35The recent
23:36like stripping
23:37of his title
23:38man that day
23:40I remember
23:42we were at work
23:44and I couldn't
23:46even hold myself
23:47together physically.
23:48I was like
23:48Virginia
23:48if you could see
23:50that even now
23:51like what you have
23:52done like
23:53a king
23:54had to acknowledge
23:56that something
23:57happened here.
23:59It was tears
24:00of joy
24:00in the sense
24:01of you know
24:02the accomplishment
24:03that the king
24:03had to acknowledge
24:05but let's be clear
24:06like we need
24:07to do more.
24:13I feel in my lifetime
24:15I haven't seen
24:17the monarchy
24:17under such pressure
24:18than it is
24:20at the moment.
24:21How can you
24:21brush this off?
24:22How can you
24:23come back from this?
24:24How can the royal
24:25family survive?
24:28Ultimately
24:29the price
24:29he has paid
24:30is public
24:31humiliation.
24:33The price
24:33he has paid
24:34is withdrawal
24:35from public life
24:36and that punishment
24:37I suppose
24:37is about as
24:38profound as you
24:39can get
24:39for a member
24:40of the royal family
24:41but some people
24:42will say
24:42it does not
24:43go far enough.
24:44As of right now
24:45it seems
24:46the only realistic
24:47criminal action
24:49against Prince Andrew
24:50could be in England.
24:51Of all the emails
24:53there seems to be
24:53one in particular
24:55which appears
24:55to show Andrew
24:56forwarding government
24:57documents to Epstein
24:59and UK officials
25:00are looking into
25:01whether that
25:02could be criminal.
25:03That's serious.
25:05The palace says
25:05it will fully cooperate
25:06with any investigation.
25:11Stunning breaking news
25:12out of Great Britain.
25:13Yes, former Prince Andrew
25:14arrested.
25:15This is an absolutely
25:16seismic moment.
25:18Andrew had already
25:19lost his homes
25:20his reputation
25:21and his titles.
25:22Now he is under arrest
25:24by British police
25:24on suspicion of
25:25misconduct
25:26in public office.
25:27Law enforcement
25:28launching a coordinated
25:29operation on King Charles'
25:30private estate
25:31in Sandringham
25:32where Andrew
25:33had been sent
25:33into effective exile.
25:35Let's be very clear
25:37Andrew
25:37former Prince of the Realm
25:39the King's own brother
25:41has been arrested.
25:42I never thought
25:43I'd say those words
25:44nobody did.
25:44This is something
25:46that has not happened
25:47in modern royal history
25:49at all.
25:49Well we've seen
25:50a picture of Prince Andrew
25:52as he's been released
25:52and he looks a man
25:54in deep shock.
25:55He's been released
25:56without charge
25:57but still under investigation.
25:58This is really
25:59all that people
26:00are going to be able
26:01to talk about
26:02when it comes
26:03to the royal family.
26:05This has engulfed them.
26:07Once investigators
26:07start going through
26:08what they find
26:09on British soil
26:10documents,
26:11emails,
26:11financial records
26:12who knows
26:13where it leads?
26:14It's a Pandora's box.
26:17There could be more
26:18fallout in all this.
26:19They could discover
26:20more controversy
26:21in those files
26:22and don't forget
26:23Ghislaine Maxwell
26:24is still in prison
26:25playing cat and mouse
26:26with authorities.
26:27She's even said
26:28she would talk
26:29but only if the president
26:30gives her clemency.
26:32The story around Andrew
26:35has been around
26:36in one form or another
26:38for the best part
26:39of 15 to 20 years.
26:41Thoughts and prayers
26:42for victims
26:43are all very well and good
26:44but I think
26:44what those victims
26:45want more than anything else,
26:46those survivors want
26:47more than anything else
26:48is accountability.
26:49Virginia Dufresne's impact
26:50has been huge here.
26:52She's made these
26:52very high profile accusations
26:54against Prince Andrew.
26:55She tragically died
26:56by suicide last year
26:58but the impact
26:59that she has had
27:00continues to be huge.
27:09While it might seem
27:10that we're in the middle
27:12of the road of this,
27:13actually in many ways
27:14this is just beginning.
27:15We're going to stand
27:16and we're going to fight.
27:17Our only agenda
27:18is accountability.
27:20We need to pass
27:20Virginia's law
27:21to eliminate
27:22the statute of limitations.
27:23We need survivors
27:24to be taken seriously.
27:26Virginia's law
27:27basically eliminate
27:29the statute of limitations
27:30moving backwards
27:33to sue
27:35for sexual abuse.
27:36Virginia's dream
27:37was to inspire
27:38and empower survivors
27:39to come forward.
27:41I'm like, please,
27:42I hope you're with us
27:43and I hope you're seeing
27:44it through my eyes,
27:45just what you did, girl,
27:46because like,
27:47you're changing the world.
27:50We are at
27:52that crossroads
27:53where we decide
27:54which path
27:55we're going to take.
27:57Every single person
27:58that was involved
27:59in this sex trafficking ring
28:01needs to be fully investigated.
28:03Doesn't matter
28:04if it's former Prince Andrew
28:06or anybody else
28:07that might be implicated.
28:08I do commend the king.
28:10You're going up
28:11against your own brother,
28:12but the reality is
28:13this could either be
28:14a huge stain
28:15or you can use this
28:16as a moment
28:17to actually affect real change.
28:20Virginia's legacy
28:21will be a warrior
28:24for survivors.
28:26I think in so many ways
28:28it already is.
28:29And one of the things
28:30that she used to say was,
28:34if I could endure
28:35all this pain
28:36and just come forward
28:38for one girl
28:40and it changes
28:41one girl's life,
28:44it's all worth it.
28:50It's all worth it.
28:52It's all worth it.
28:56It's all worth it.
28:59It's all worth it.
29:04It's all worth it.
29:06It's all worth it.
29:06It's all worth it.
29:06It's all worth it.
29:09It's all worth it.
