09:17Yo me dijeron que Heidi rocked being a mom.
09:21She truly rocked it.
09:23Her kids were everything to her.
09:26She would absolutely never leave Silas.
09:31And me knowing the turmoil that her and Shane had been in previously,
09:37my first thought was, what did he do to her?
09:40What has he done?
09:43In my experience, the largest majority of the time when things like this happen,
09:49it's going to be the spouse, the fiancé, the boyfriend, someone who is close to the victim.
09:54So, of course, the police are going to look at Shane first.
10:01We grew up in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
10:04When Heidi was in her mid-20s, she worked at the casino for a while, living her best life.
10:08She was a cocktail waitress and had met Shane there.
10:13And fell in love.
10:17They had one of those relationships.
10:19It was a little tumultuous.
10:20It was back and forth.
10:22But pretty early on, she found out she was pregnant.
10:26Of course, the way we were raised, her getting pregnant out of quote-unquote wedlock
10:32was definitely not the way you want to tell your family.
10:36But she always wanted to be a mom.
10:38They moved to Austin right before Silas was born.
10:41And they had Silas, and nothing else mattered.
10:46They were together eight years.
10:48But unfortunately, her and Shane had broke up a lot.
10:52She told me about abuse, whether it's financial, emotional, mental.
10:57But we all thought she knows when enough is enough.
11:01And the last breakup, that was it.
11:04That was going to be it.
11:07But then early that year, she found out she was pregnant with Margo.
11:13And she told me she wanted to give it another shot because she wanted her family.
11:18She wanted the unit.
11:19And she wanted her kids to have that.
11:21Come hell or high water, she was going to make her family work.
11:25It's not unreasonable to wonder if something had re-emerged from the previous conflicts that they had had
11:33that was now creating strife in their relationship again.
11:39Next, Shane was brought into Austin Police Department to do a real formal, in-depth interview.
11:46Through the course of the interviews with Shane, it was obvious there were some troubles in the relationship.
11:51But it's natural to have troubles in relationships.
11:55Shane told the police that him and Heidi were in a good place.
11:58And tells them there was never any physical abuse.
12:01And the last time he spoke with her was the day she went missing.
12:05She was just leaving Silas at school.
12:08She told him what she did at the school and that she ended up getting three books for Silas.
12:12And she was really excited to be able to read to him that night.
12:15So while they continue speaking with Shane, investigators need to verify when Heidi had last been seen.
12:23Austin Police go through the surveillance from her son's school.
12:27And they find footage of her dropping off her son for school.
12:31She ends up getting caught on the camera at about 8.12 that morning.
12:35Heidi Broussard was last seen in this image released by Austin Police,
12:39smiling and wearing a purple sweatshirt.
12:42Her assumption is that they're alive.
12:44And the sooner that we can find them, the better.
12:47So they were able to confirm her whereabouts that morning.
12:50But anything past that was a huge mystery.
12:56Now, investigators need to find out from Shane where he was.
13:00Does he have an alibi?
13:01In this case, Shane said he was at work.
13:04His boss confirmed that he was at work all day as he was supposed to be.
13:08So there was nothing atypical about his day.
13:12Shane was very helpful.
13:14He gave the police his cell phone.
13:15We could see when she called him that he, in fact, had talked to her on December 12th.
13:21He had already let them search in the apartment.
13:24He let them look at the car.
13:25So there was nothing he was holding back.
13:27His alibis checking out.
13:29Also, looking into Shane, there was nothing that popped up that said there was any domestic violence,
13:36that there were any police calls for service at the address.
13:39As far as law enforcement was concerned, he was not part of Heidi being missing.
13:45So at this point, the police have very little to go on.
13:50Because this child is so young, just a few weeks old, has some medical complications,
13:56and just needs basic needs taken care of,
13:58investigators have a very small window of opportunity before something really bad could happen.
14:04So I called the chief of the Austin Police Department and said,
14:08hey, the FBI has a lot of resources we can bring.
14:12We have the CARD team, a group of investigators, intelligence analysts, technicians,
14:18that focus on child abductions.
14:21One of the things we brought to bear in this particular case
14:24is something called the FBI's Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team
14:28that we deploy at the request of our state and local partners whenever a child is abducted.
14:34Our investigators move out very quickly to start looking very aggressively.
14:40Where could she be? Where could this baby be?
14:43We need to find Heidi and her new baby as soon as possible.
14:56Heidi and her new baby have been missing for a number of days.
15:01The FBI CARD team start looking hard for Heidi.
15:05After they speak with him on December 13th, investigators moved on from Shane.
15:11The next step, once you rule out a spouse or a partner,
15:14is you start to look at every one of her acquaintances, her family, neighbors,
15:19everyone she worked with,
15:21and you really have to start digging in on all of those people as possible suspects.
15:29Investigators learned that Heidi was very bubbly, very social, and very outgoing.
15:35She was someone who had a lot of friends, and she was like the go-to of the group.
15:41I told the police, Heidi loves everybody. She takes everybody in.
15:45She didn't see the red flags in people.
15:49They said she was very loyal.
15:51I mean, her friends date back from when she was a teen.
15:55Me, Rachel, and Heidi, we were just best friends.
15:57Then we go to church camp every year.
16:00We met Megan and Caressa at church camp in Columbus, Texas.
16:05Heidi and them became good friends, and they've always kept in touch.
16:12It's kind of funny.
16:14When Heidi got pregnant with Silas, we were pregnant at the same time.
16:18I was pregnant with my second one, and she was pregnant with her first.
16:21And, you know, she was so excited we were both having boys.
16:24And when Heidi had gotten pregnant with Margo, her best friend, Megan, was having a baby, too.
16:32And they were excited to be pregnant together and just to have the same due date.
16:39Heidi was always the cheerleader.
16:41When she loved you, she loved you.
16:43And she never let you go.
16:45No matter where anybody lived, you know, she was always the lifeline that kept everybody together.
16:54So when Heidi went missing, I thought it was either Shane or definitely a stranger,
17:00because none of Heidi's friends would hurt Heidi.
17:05I know it's Shane.
17:06I know he did it.
17:07I know it's him.
17:09It's got to be.
17:10Like, who else would it be?
17:15Even though investigators were able to confirm Shane's alibi, Heidi's friends still were kind of side-eyeing Shane.
17:23Just because they knew Heidi and Shane had a toxic relationship, there was a lot of speculation around him.
17:31So I wanted to put together a search team.
17:33I was like, we need to go find her.
17:41I became involved in this case when Heidi's loved ones called EquiSearch because of her disappearance.
17:51EquiSearch is involved in volunteer search efforts.
17:54We don't charge a nickel.
17:56We'll be part of a search and helping families.
17:59We're not part of an investigation, but many times we've given them information that's led to some pretty good results.
18:10I remember talking to Heidi's friends and other family members.
18:16I talked to a very close friend.
18:18Her name was Megan.
18:21She was telling me the stories about Heidi and Shane.
18:25They were having some problems, and she says, knowing what I know about that relationship,
18:31it wouldn't surprise me if Shane did something to her.
18:35And I said, he really feels, oh, he's capable.
18:40And Megan said, he's more than capable.
18:43She pointed 100% to Shane.
18:49When we started that search in Austin area, I met with Shane, met with Shane's dad.
18:55There was many, many volunteers that wanted to get involved.
19:00So we put together some ATVs and some foot searchers.
19:04Here in Austin, there's a lot of different terrain that you go looking through.
19:08You have Zilker Park.
19:10You have all the green belts.
19:11You have natural waterways.
19:13I actually marked spots on maps that she possibly could have walked to, or she possibly could have taken a
19:22cab, too.
19:23Shane and I spent a lot of time together driving around, kind of looking at different areas.
19:30Everybody reacts different, you know?
19:32But I never heard his voice sound like he was going to break down and cry.
19:37His demeanor just wasn't at all what I thought that it should have been.
19:43It seemed strange, to say the least.
19:51While we were looking for her, we were all talking, trying to keep up to date with everything.
19:56But there was no trace.
19:58I was just like, well, will this ever be solved?
20:01Because it didn't feel like they were getting anywhere.
20:05There were some calls that came in with possible sightings, but none of them ended up being really credible.
20:12After some of the search efforts that we did, we haven't found anything.
20:17We don't have anywhere else to go.
20:23So, next, an emergency order was filed with Heidi's cell phone company to see, was the phone hitting?
20:30We call it pinging.
20:31Was the cell phone active and hitting somewhere?
20:33That request went through, and it came back that her phone was either off or at a battery, and it
20:39had not pinged anywhere since pinging at the house.
20:42On December 12th, the day that Heidi disappears.
20:45So, we started canvassing through the neighborhood again.
20:49Because a lot of times what you find is people see things that they don't know are important until you
20:56really jog their brain.
20:57This time, one witness described a four-door sedan of a light color that she saw go around towards the
21:07back where Heidi's apartment was.
21:10Then, another neighbor actually remembered seeing somebody with the description of Heidi and Margo getting inside of a similar vehicle.
21:20So, we're starting to get a little bit more of a picture of the last time anyone had seen Heidi.
21:25But when people are missing, you're going down different investigative avenues at the same time.
21:30As we interviewed more of Heidi's friends, a couple of people told us that one of Heidi's friends acted odd
21:36during the delivery of Heidi's baby.
21:40So, investigators go to the hospital and interview delivery staff.
21:46The nurse remembered right after Heidi gave birth to Margo.
21:49Most of the family got to hold the baby.
21:51Well, Shane's dad was ready to hold the baby.
21:54And Heidi's friend stepped in and said, hold on, and aggressively took the baby from him.
21:59She acts very possessive with the baby, acts very strange in general, and literally takes the baby from the grandfather
22:07because she wants to hold the baby.
22:11Once we got that story of what happened in the maternity room, our behavioral analysis people right away said, hey,
22:20we really got to look at this.
22:21This could possibly be a maternal desire type situation.
22:27Maternal desire is a mental state where a woman has an insatiable drive to acquire a child.
22:35That's why maternity rooms are so locked down, because unfortunately there's been a number of instances where people have gotten
22:42in there and stolen a baby.
22:45When we heard how Heidi's friend acted with the baby, it made us very suspicious about her mental state.
22:55Now we have a suspicious person.
22:58Our investigators from the card team said, we got to go hard on this.
23:03We need to figure out who is this woman and where could she be?
23:18The police had talked to the hospital staff where Heidi gave birth to baby Margo.
23:25The nurses remember one of Heidi's good friends was acting super possessive over Margo right after she was born.
23:33Police were concerned about the possibility of maternal desire, which can turn into something that is not altogether different from
23:43what I would call delusional.
23:45This baby's mine. I need this baby. I must have it.
23:49When people get into that sort of delusional or semi-delusional world, reality doesn't matter anymore.
23:58And when people become that obsessed and that divorced from reality, it can escalate to extreme violence.
24:06It can escalate to murder.
24:09So investigators decided to take this very seriously right from the beginning.
24:14So investigators asked Shane, who in fact was in the hospital room when Heidi was delivering Margo, and he mentioned
24:21Megan.
24:23Megan Humphrey, which was one of her closest friends.
24:27Once we identify Megan as the woman in the maternity ward with the strange behavior, we start going back and
24:34re-interviewing people to say, what can you tell us about her?
24:38What's her timeline? And any of these other pieces we have, could it fit back to her?
24:48So Heidi's friends told investigators that Megan lived in Houston, but they still kept in touch.
24:54Megan was one of Heidi's best friends since their early teens.
24:57But while Heidi and Megan were really close friends, most of Heidi's friends didn't really love Megan.
25:04When Heidi introduced us, unfortunately, I got a bad vibe from Megan.
25:10I didn't like her right away, but Heidi's heart was so pure.
25:16She loved everybody.
25:18So, I mean, she's been friends with her for many, many years.
25:21According to her friends, they just thought Megan was a little weird, didn't really click with her, could give or
25:26take her.
25:27But Heidi was, you know, the embracer.
25:33Through the course of re-interviews, asking about Megan, we find out Megan announced she's pregnant not long after Heidi
25:41announced she was pregnant.
25:43When she was told about the pregnancy, Megan was like, we're going to be pregnant together.
25:48November 26th, the day that Margo was born, Megan came down to Austin.
25:55Megan was about 37 weeks pregnant at this time.
26:00Heidi's friends told police it was remarkable that she had driven about three hours from Houston to Austin to be
26:08present for the birth of baby Margo.
26:11And just a few weeks later, on December the 8th or the 9th, she tells everyone she gave birth to
26:18her own baby named Luna.
26:21Investigators ask her friends, did you see a picture of the baby?
26:25Have you seen this baby?
26:27And all of them said, I haven't seen a picture of her.
26:32Wow.
26:33You're a new mom.
26:34You're proud of this baby.
26:36And you haven't showed a picture?
26:38So that was very quickly looked at, but there's no evidence that she had a baby at all.
26:46And she really starts rising on the list of suspects.
26:50You start doing research, and now things start to click.
26:54She actually has a four-door light-colored sedan.
26:57Like the car that somebody saw Heidi and the baby get into in the parking lot when they went missing.
27:05Investigators start looking into all the red light cameras in the area, as well as license plate readers.
27:10And there are license plate readers showing her in the area the day that Heidi disappears.
27:16Also, after her cell phone records were retrieved, her phone had been pinged that day on different cell phone towers
27:23that were located near Heidi's apartment.
27:25So now, at this point, investigators put together a lineup of multiple people and Megan Humphrey and take this lineup
27:33back to the neighbor for an eyewitness account.
27:35When they showed her Megan Humphrey, the neighbor actually said,
27:40this person is the person that she saw Heidi and Margo getting in the vehicle with on the morning of
27:46their disappearance.
27:52Obviously, she is now suspect number one.
27:55In this case, is she going to harm the baby? Is she going to run? Is she going to do
27:59something?
27:59You don't always want to do an interview right away, because obviously, the minute you do an interview, they know
28:05that they're a suspect.
28:06And we are very concerned for the safety of the child.
28:10So the decision was, let's put a surveillance team all around the house in Houston to see, is there any
28:17sign of Heidi, a baby, anything strange?
28:23The Texas Rangers were called in to assist them with the surveillance on Megan's house in Houston, Texas.
28:30We see her car in the backyard.
28:32It fits the four-door light-colored sedan that one witness described to us.
28:39At a point during the surveillance, a man leaves the house.
28:42Let's follow him, see who he is, where's he going.
28:45He goes to Target, where he is observed buying baby supplies.
28:51The Texas Rangers make the decision, hey, this is a life safety issue.
28:55We're concerned about the health of the baby.
28:58We're going to intervene right now.
28:59So the Texas Rangers grab him in the parking lot.
29:03They start asking him questions.
29:06He identified himself as Christopher Green.
29:08They find out this is Megan's ex-boyfriend, whom she lives with.
29:13They asked him if he had a newborn child, and he said he did.
29:15And they told him, we're looking into why Heidi, as well as her child, are missing.
29:20And they show him a picture of baby Margo.
29:22And he said, that's my baby.
29:25That's my baby at home.
29:36Investigators stop Christopher Green, Megan's ex-boyfriend, whom she lives with.
29:41After he leaves Target, he had a bunch of baby items.
29:44He says, why I'm buying this stuff?
29:46Because my girlfriend had a baby.
29:49But the Texas Rangers show him a picture of the missing baby.
29:53And he says, that's the baby that's at my house.
29:57And then they ask him if he was present at the birth.
30:03Christopher Green told investigators that he's an oil field worker.
30:07When he arrived home from a work trip on December 13th, his ex-girlfriend, Megan, had given birth
30:13a few days before that while he was gone.
30:16He said, well, why didn't you call me?
30:18She's like, please don't be angry.
30:20But I ended up having the baby at a birthing center.
30:24Obviously, if you're the father of a baby, it's very surprising that you were not present
30:28when the baby was born.
30:30The whole story doesn't hold water.
30:31It doesn't make sense.
30:33It doesn't add up at all.
30:35So based on all the information that Christopher Green gave authorities at that point,
30:39they had enough probable cause to go back and enter the property where Megan was with
30:44the baby.
30:49I had been doing podcasting for roughly a year before the Heidi case came about.
30:55It was December 19th.
30:57I interviewed her friend, Caressa, to raise awareness about Heidi and the baby's disappearance.
31:03After a week of Heidi being missing, I think her friends and family were getting really desperate.
31:08So we are talking to Heidi's best friend, Caressa.
31:13We were live on YouTube.
31:15So everybody is participating in real time.
31:18Everything of hers was there besides her phone and her keys.
31:22Which is very, very odd.
31:23Yeah.
31:24As the interview went on, someone in the chat had said, breaking news, they're raiding a home
31:28in Houston.
31:29And that changed everything.
31:31Wait a second, you guys.
31:32We have breaking news.
31:33Northwest Harris County home swarmed by FBI and Austin police.
31:38The address was given out when the raid was announced and someone in the chat started
31:44searching the address to that house and someone found a baby registry.
31:50Megan Humphrey and Christopher Green.
31:53Oh, my God.
31:54Oh, my God.
31:55What?
31:55What?
31:56That's Megan, her best friend.
31:59What?
32:01Oh, my God.
32:02That's Megan's house.
32:05And that was when all hell broke loose.
32:09I'm over here freaking out.
32:10I'm sorry.
32:11Oh.
32:16I'm so sorry, Caressa.
32:18I'm so sorry.
32:24Authorities enter the property where Megan was with the baby and rescue the baby.
32:29Some of the agents take this baby to a hospital to make sure that the baby is OK.
32:35Then they begin to interview Megan at the house.
32:39Megan tells the investigators the baby was her baby girl named Luna.
32:43OK, when did you have the baby?
32:45Where did you have the baby?
32:47She couldn't tell them where she had the baby.
32:48How could you not remember?
32:51Since we were pretty sure this is Heidi's baby.
32:54Now, where is Heidi?
32:58Investigators expanded their search and they start looking for Heidi.
33:03They are searching everywhere to see if there's any evidence of her being alive.
33:10Walking through the backyard, immediately one of the Texas Rangers is struck with this smell that's coming out of the
33:17car.
33:19As investigators, you know that smell.
33:22They pop the trunk and inside of the trunk, they find a black duffel bag.
33:28And upon opening the black duffel bag, they find a female deceased.
33:32Pretty quickly, they realized based on photos they had, this is in fact Heidi.
33:39Although we were very happy to retrieve the baby alive and healthy, it's hard to celebrate that when you know
33:46that Heidi died.
33:50We have a Fox News alert for you, a dead body and a baby found alive in that search connected
33:57to the missing mother down in Texas.
33:59Heidi Broussard and her newborn daughter, Margo.
34:03I'm watching news coverage, and then you see the stretcher or the body pack.
34:19And you know that your friends are there.
34:23And you know that your friends are there.
34:23Your friends are there.
34:28I just remember screaming.
34:32And I'm just screaming like, she's gone, she's dead.
34:41I got a call from a detective that says, hey, I just want to make you aware that we're at
34:46one of Heidi's friend's house.
34:48I can't get a lot of information right now, but I've taken Megan in custody.
34:54But we do have the baby.
34:56Heidi is deceased.
35:01And I'm just thinking, man, if I could just see Shane right now and just hug him and say, I'm
35:07sorry.
35:07I'm sorry, man.
35:09I'm sorry.
35:11Once the baby was released from the hospital and DNA testing proved that it was Heidi's baby, she was returned
35:17to the family.
35:25Based on evidence, license plate readers showing her in the area the day that Heidi disappears, her cell phone records,
35:33Heidi's baby at her house in Houston, her car with Heidi in the trunk.
35:39When you add all that together, we know Megan is responsible for this crime.
35:46I'm angry.
35:48We're all angry by Heidi.
35:53Your best friend is supposed to be the person you trust more than anybody.
35:59The Houston coroner did an autopsy and declared that Heidi was killed by strangulation.
36:06Authorities charged Megan with capital murder and two counts of kidnapping and an account of tampering with evidence of human
36:13corpse for putting Heidi in the trunk of the vehicle.
36:16But Megan would never speak with investigators about the details.
36:19I'm not sure we're ever going to know the full story behind what happened between Heidi and Megan.
36:25But it was pretty obvious there was a plan that was thought out deliberately over the course of months.
36:31The timing of Megan's announcement that she was pregnant doesn't seem accidental or coincidental.
36:39She was probably planning right from the outset to take Heidi's baby from her.
36:47And the only way that that timeline would work is if she too became pregnant right around the same time.
36:53The idea that somebody could lie for nine months to everybody they love is ruthless.
36:59It's calculated.
37:00It's evil.
37:04So now at this point investigators must ask how in the world did Megan's ex-boyfriend not know this whole
37:12time?
37:13It sounds very suspicious.
37:16So we really start to think about was this person part of this?
37:21Was Christopher Green planning this with Megan?
37:24Megan.
37:35When Megan was arrested, once they had found Heidi and the baby, a lot of people questioned how Megan's boyfriend
37:43could not know.
37:45But when the investigators talked to Megan's ex-boyfriend, the story that he told them was plausible.
37:54He had broken up with Megan months earlier, right before Megan announced she was pregnant.
37:59Within days of the now ex-boyfriend kicking her out of the house, she comes back and says, hey, I'm
38:07pregnant.
38:08And he allows her to move back in.
38:12They were sleeping in separate rooms.
38:14They weren't being intimate with one another.
38:16So he was clueless.
38:18He had not seen her naked and could not confirm that she was pregnant.
38:23So he took it on her word.
38:26Obviously, Megan's boyfriend was investigated thoroughly.
38:29And although it looks very strange, it was determined that he was truthful and he was proven to have nothing
38:37to do with this crime.
38:42This is a textbook case of maternal desire, where Megan was envious of her friend for having a baby, getting
38:50pregnant, everything that went with it.
38:53She consciously made the decision.
38:55I'm going to kill my best friend to take her baby because that's what I want.
39:00Looking back, this is where I think the story started.
39:10Megan's boyfriend, Chris, he was breaking up with her.
39:13She's got to figure out how to make him stay.
39:17What's the easiest way to keep somebody?
39:19Is to tell him you're pregnant.
39:21When Heidi first announced her pregnancy with the baby, Megan told everybody that she was pregnant, too.
39:28Then, over the course of the subsequent months, she faked a pregnancy.
39:35She gained a lot of weight.
39:36She stuffed her belly to show that she was getting bigger and bigger every single month.
39:41She created a baby registry and then later had a baby shower.
39:47On November 26th, Heidi gives birth and Megan is there with her.
39:52And then a little over a week later, Megan tells all of her friends that she gave birth to a
39:57baby girl named Luna.
39:59On December 12th, early in the afternoon, Megan comes to visit Heidi at her department complex.
40:07We don't know exactly how Megan got Heidi down to the car.
40:11But somehow, using that friendship, Megan got Heidi to bring the baby down and see her.
40:17Investigators think that after Megan got Heidi in the car, she strangled her and drove back to Houston with Heidi's
40:24body and the baby.
40:26The next day, when Megan's ex-boyfriend came back home, she introduced baby Margo to him as his child.
40:39To think that this was planned out over a nine-month period that she was going to do away with
40:44her friend just to get her baby and never have one thought that this might not be a good idea
40:50is crazy to me.
40:54We did lay Heidi to rest right before Christmas, and she had the absolute most beautiful funeral.
41:00I saw Shane at the funeral, and I said, I want to let you know that I blamed you.
41:07I had to admit this to him, and it sucked.
41:12He was just like, it's okay, it's okay.
41:13He was like, everybody thought it, you know, you're not the only one.
41:17You aren't alone.
41:19Megan never went to trial for this case.
41:21She actually accepted a plea deal.
41:23Megan was sentenced to 55 years in prison, no chance of parole, and no chance to appeal her case.
41:32What is justice?
41:34Justice is only a word.
41:38Families never get over it.
41:39It's just a word to hopefully comfort us.
41:44There's a lot of evil in this world, and it just makes you take a step back and look around.
41:52I mean, she thought that this person was her best friend for 20 years.
41:57I can't even imagine.
41:59She took the mother of two children.
42:01Those children will never have a mother now.
42:03She destroyed an entire family.
42:06And it really breaks my heart to think about that.
42:13Heidi was a light in everybody's life.
42:19She was a good person, a good friend.
42:22She had a laugh that was unmistakable.
42:25And she wanted to make everybody's day a little brighter.
42:31We all want to keep her memory alive.
42:33Because Heidi never missed the opportunity to take somebody in and make them feel special.
42:40And that's just, but that's who she was.
42:43I mean, we all want to keep up.
42:48Even though we shouldn't have and be afraid.
42:48We all want to keep up.
42:48Gracias.
