00:06This is a pretty big occasion for us here at the San Diego Zoo's Institute for Conservation Research.
00:12The lizard that is hatching today is the Grand Cayman Blue Iguana.
00:16It's one of the most endangered lizards in the world.
00:18Just a few years ago, there was only thought to be about 20 left in the wild.
00:22We have four breeding adults here, and this is the third year in a row that we've bred them.
00:27The Grand Cayman Blue Iguana is critically endangered.
00:30It only comes from the island of Grand Cayman in the Caribbean.
00:34They're pretty big. They can get around four feet long.
00:37They can get up to about 20 pounds, and adults are a powder blue color.
00:41They're beautiful iguanas, but again, they're critically endangered.
00:44They're the largest native land animal in the Caribbean islands that they come from.
00:49The problem has been when people arrive to these islands, they also bring their cats and their dogs and sheep
00:55and goats.
00:55The sheep and goats eat the same foods that the iguanas do, but the cats and the dogs actually eat
01:01the iguanas.
01:02So it's become a big problem, and they can become extinct pretty easily because of this.
01:07So our job is to breed them here in captivity in a managed program with all the other United States
01:13zoos.
01:13What we do is we mirror the genetics, so we basically have the same bloodlines as they do in the
01:19wild.
01:19And in case of a hurricane or something that wipes out the wild population, we can go put them back
01:25with the animals that we've produced in captivity.
01:28The hatchlings we're producing here at the Institute today will go into a managed breeding program.
01:34Another U.S. zoo will probably take them, and those will be paired with another animal from a different clutch.
01:39And hopefully we'll just keep producing animals, and if they need to go back to the wild, they will.
01:44So we'll be listening to this.
01:45First of all, this is the story that we're operating in the wild.
01:46Please stand up here.
01:46And finally, the ex.
01:46We have to pray for the three and a half.
01:46The two of us, the two of us in the wild and a half.
01:46We have to pray for this.
01:46They do not trust them.
01:46You
