QCL's Sally Gall speaks with Ray White's Andrew Turner about Blackall's first weaner sale of the year
Transcript
00:00It's Sally Gould here from Queensland Country Life.
00:02I'm at Blackwell's first weaner sale for the year
00:05and I've got Ray White's Andrew Turner here with me to talk about the market.
00:10Andrew, how many have we yarded here today?
00:12Just over 5,000 head yarded, Sally.
00:15Predominantly store and feeder cattle.
00:17There's about 700 fat cattle yet to be penned for the second round
00:21and some very good lines of fat cattle.
00:23But overall, a pretty good quality yarding with a lot of conditioning weight
00:26and the cattle as you'd expect with the seasonal we've been enjoying.
00:30So where have you been able to yard cattle from?
00:32The Winton, Longreach, Jericho, Barkalden, Blackall and Tambo districts.
00:38Some cattle are also drawn from down the Isisford district as well.
00:42There is a run of bullocks from the Julia Creek district
00:44that will be sold in the repens with the fat cattle.
00:47So there's just a few cattle starting to shift out of that very wet country up north.
00:51And so we've got both processors and restockers operating here?
00:55Yeah, processors, feedlotters and restockers.
00:58Pretty competitive market.
00:59Put a lot of cattle going locally into the greater central west area, you would say,
01:05which is a nice change.
01:07And I know we're only halfway through the sale,
01:09but just tell me what sort of prices we've been getting.
01:11Yeah, best of your weiner steers are up to about 500 and 60 cents
01:16and a fair bit of weight in those weiner steers.
01:19Best of your feeder steers, just over the $5 mark.
01:23A lot of feeder steers making between $475 and $85, so very competitive with the southern Queensland
01:32markets at the moment.
01:33Pat, you were just telling me you wouldn't normally sell these guys right now.
01:38And I'm heading to our sale in September when we have our bull sale.
01:41Yeah.
01:42But due to very little rain, where these steers normally run,
01:46we've only had three inches of rain for the year
01:48and the heaviest fall was 40 mils and that was it.
01:50These guys made pretty good money though.
01:52Oh, very happy with them actually, yeah.
01:54I believe I made $5 and $498 and I'm real happy.
