Seth and Sean hear what Texans OL Wyatt Teller had to say about returning to form, his new teammates and coaches, as well as his son predicting months ago that he'd play for the Texans.
Transcript
00:00This is Wyatt Teller, who has been a good football player for big chunks of his career,
00:04including Pro Bowls in 2021, 22, and 23, but he hasn't been a Pro Bowl player the last couple
00:11years. He wants to get back to being nasty after these last couple years. I feel like the last two
00:15years in Cleveland have been tough. We went through a lot of growing pains through quarterbacks
00:22and running backs and a lot of offensive positions and stuff. Personally, I feel like
00:31there was some good ball out there, but there's also stuff that I could have gotten better at
00:36or been better at. It feels like it's been a blink. Two years ago, or really three years ago,
00:43we were in Houston playing y'all and hearing that loud stadium and everything like that.
00:47So it's right there. We were right on the cusp of being a really talented team, and we had a
00:53winning streak going in there. But a team like the Texans, they have so much talent, great quarterback,
01:00great running back, people to build off of, so much stability and great culture, great coaches.
01:07It feels like what we were right on that edge in Cleveland having two years ago. We're right
01:15there, or you guys are already there, and however I can help coming in and playing out the best I
01:22can
01:22be, getting back to what I'm good at, being that nasty, gritty player. I feel like a little bit
01:28of my play, I mean, there was a couple plays this past year where there's shows of it and there's
01:35glimpses of it, but kind of being that consistent player again where all pro, pro bowl player
01:41that can help the Texans win. Dude. So go ahead. A pro bowler. If he could get a pro
01:47bowl over 8 million bucks at left guard, left guard's been such a, such a, such a big, it's
01:55occupied such a huge portion of our brains in these last few years. Oh, um, I point now
02:01I'm having Kenyon green flashbacks and I'm still, I still feel there's a place for Kenyon
02:06green. If he could just stay healthy somewhere in this league, but I digress. Um, the, so what
02:12Wyatt Teller said there about getting back to where he used to be, that's there's part
02:16of that that's real, um, in terms of the way he's played the last couple of years compared
02:20to when he was at his all pro peak. I think injuries have been tough for him. Um, but there
02:25is also an element of what's happened to the Browns offense over the last couple of years
02:30and through the various quarterbacks that he's been playing with. It's, it's hard for an entire
02:37offensive line to play. Well, when at times you've either got to Sean Watson making some
02:43curious decisions, I think, um, or just not operating the same way that he used to operate
02:47when you're playing with Shadur Sanders. And this isn't me bagging on Shadur Sanders. It's
02:51a young quarterback who holds onto the ball too long. You know, yeah, Shadur Sanders had
02:56the slowest time to throw in the league last year. Joe Flacco just coming in and, uh, like
03:02at various times, it's just, there was never a lot of consistency in the way they were operating.
03:07So it's both. I think that Wyatt Teller hasn't necessarily been moving or playing at his peak,
03:13but I still think he's been a very effective run blocker. Um, I went through and I watched
03:18last year. I wanted to go back and I, and I watched a couple of games where he specifically
03:21had bad pro football focus grades. And I went through a few plays with Wade Smith. Cause I'm
03:28looking at it and I always know, you know how I am when it comes to past protection issues.
03:32I always go to one of my former teammates or a couple of the guys that I know, um,
03:36offensive linemen because they have a much better view of this. And I'm going through some of the
03:40plays, uh, of, of one of his bad games. And I'm trying to count up where the, where all these
03:46pressures came from. And I'm going through with Wade and I'm like, I think they, I think they
03:51probably charged Wyatt Teller with this one, but it's pretty clear that the ball was meant to come
03:56out quickly on this play. But Joe Flacco had held onto it for whatever reason. Another couple of plays
04:01where he was playing next to a really bad offensive tackle. And it looked like it was probably the
04:06tackles fault and Wade agreed me with me on most of those. So I think there's some total of it
04:11was,
04:11yes, he's an aging player. Who's had some injury concerns, but he's also been on a bad offense on a
04:17bad team with a constantly shifting quarterback behind him that it could be, he could definitely
04:25have a resurgence. I'm not going to say he's going to be back to where he was at his peak
04:29a few years
04:30ago. Um, but all he has to do is if he plays the same way he played last year, it
04:35would be a huge
04:36upgrade at left guard. How much, this is something we haven't really dug into and we'll get to Wyatt
04:42Teller and his son Brooks here in a second, some funny audio and Seth asked him about, about that
04:47yesterday in the press conference. How much does Wyatt Teller at left guard help Ariante Ursari in his
04:52second year at left tackle having a vet right next to him? I think, I think it helps a lot.
04:56And I think
04:57that's some of what we saw last year when Titus Howard came and played left guard. It's not just,
05:01it wasn't as much about Titus Howard's individual play and however he graded out on PFF or anything.
05:07It was having some stability there and partly to just having a large body. I like Titus Howard isn't
05:13a great run blocker, but there is an element to just having a large body in there. Who's not making
05:19mental errors and doing the right thing that helps the sum total of the offensive line look better.
05:23I think Wyatt Teller offers, offers a lot of stability regardless of how well he plays
05:30individually that Ariante Ursari ends up being a better player. Yeah, that's, that's the thing.
05:34That's kind of where I was going with it, which is, I think we're all, uh, I think most Texan
05:38fans
05:38and us are, we're excited about Ariante Ursari's potential and he got better as the year went on
05:43last year. Um, you know, he was playing in the one position group where it feels like it's got to
05:49be
05:49five guys working together, that there's chemistry along that group and you can't be individuals
05:54doing things and you got to be mindful of the guys on either side of you that Ariante
05:58Ursari was able to develop the way that he did with literally like revolving doors between series
06:05in the first half of the season. And then just kind of shuffling all season long. The Wyatt Teller
06:10signing gets me more excited about Ariante Ursari in year two now as well. So there's that. This is
06:15Wyatt Teller on his new teammates and coaches. Just, uh, was just signing me. He, we, he was, uh,
06:21we worked together in Cleveland and, um, what a great guy and great, you know, teammate, um, got to
06:26meet Ed Ingram a little bit and got to talk to him a little bit and, um, just what an
06:31awesome dude,
06:32just, you know, hard worker. I mean, big and strong, powerful guy. Uh, you know, I've seen his
06:36play. I've seen him play, but, um, you know, just getting to talk to him and get to, you know,
06:40the guy
06:41behind it. I walk into the locker room to go, you know, do my physical and signing and just
06:45everybody, it, it, it's an unbelievable culture, um, that, you know, coach Ryan's is working there
06:50and, you know, pop, you know, I got to talk to him for a little bit and, you know, he's,
06:54uh, he's,
06:56he's a hard guy, but I feel like, you know, that's what you need. And I feel like that's,
06:58what's going to get us back to, uh, to being, um, to being, you know, playing at, at the level
07:04that
07:04I know I can play at, um, and helping in any way I can, um, you know, technique might be
07:09different, whatever. I know that coach is going to work us and make sure that we're getting it
07:13right. Um, you know, but, uh, first impressions was, you know, he seems like he's, he's out here
07:18to make you the best player you can be. Um, and I appreciate that. Not that any coach doesn't,
07:22but, you know, sometimes I just feel like that can kind of get, you know, behind you. And, you
07:27know, I feel like that's on the forefront of his, uh, his mindset is just having the best team,
07:30best, best players out there and, you know, having the mindset of nothing is perfect. I mean,
07:35it's kind of like when I had coach Callahan, you know, I could drive a guy down 20 yards with
07:40one
07:40hand and pancake them. And he'd be like, well, that's cool. Why didn't you get the safety?
07:44And I feel like there's something to that and, you know, playing at a high level at all times
07:47and consistency and, um, you know, things that, you know, I, I felt like I had a little bit of,
07:53but really being consistent and, you know, that nitty gritty player that, uh, that's going to help
07:58the Texans win. Yeah. You know, uh, so when he's talking about Bill Callahan at the end there,
08:03and he talked about how Cole Popovich, uh, gave off the impression of being a hard guy,
08:08uh, just from, I guess, his one meeting with Wyatt Teller already. So yeah, I like he's cold.
08:15Cole Popovich is very much the stereotype of a crusty old offensive line. Yes. He might as well
08:21be 67 years old as much as he is. What? 30, whatever he is, 30, whatever years old. Yeah.
08:26Yeah. Young guy. But the part, I love the part when he talked about Bill Callahan saying, all right,
08:32cool. Nice block. But why didn't you go get the safety beyond him? Cause you know, one of my pet
08:37peeves is when an offensive lineman can't take somebody and then just stops and admires his work.
08:42Yes. There's other guys to block out there. Right. Go get plays not over. Why are you stopping? Well,
08:48other play is going on. Don't. Yeah. So I, I loved hearing that. And I've seen a couple instances of
08:54Wyatt Teller kind of joking about how crusty Bill Callahan is and how hard he coaches. I mean,
08:59that, that he responds well to that. So I think you don't have to worry about him at all coming
09:03in
09:03and act like he's a superstar. The first part of that clip was him talking about Evan Brown,
09:07uh, when he said he had some experience with him. Oh, okay. Okay. Got you. Evan Brown was in
09:12Cleveland in 2020. Okay. Gotcha. There you go. Evan Brown, his now teammate again here with the
09:17Houston Texans. Um, this is okay. So let's, you asked Wyatt Teller about his son's prediction
09:24that he would become a Texan. After Wyatt Teller signed with the Texans, his wife, Carly Teller,
09:29posted this video to TikTok, which she had taken back in January. So this is, uh, this is Carly Teller
09:37asking her son a question back in January. Brooks, what team, what football team do you think daddy's
09:42going to play for? Um, um, Moe Texans. The Texans? Yes. What's that? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That was him
09:52looking off. It wasn't him asking what the Texans were. Yeah. He saw something off. Oh, I should
09:56have asked that as a follow-up. What was he looking at off in the distance? Balloon or something. Yeah.
10:01Yeah. All right. So you asked him about this yesterday. I asked him, you know what? And I asked
10:05him a two-part question. I asked him this first. I said, Hey, your wife had posted this to Instagram,
10:10et cetera, et cetera. Then I asked him another question, you know, tried to get a twofer out
10:14of it. Yeah. And, and he didn't answer the, the Brooks Teller one first. Yeah. And as he's
10:19answering the, the second part of the question, I'm like, Oh crap, was that a fake video or
10:23something? Like, did he just ignore the Brooks Teller one? But he gave like a two minute answer
10:28and then remembered to come back to the story about Brooks. It's impressive, man. Yeah. The story
10:33about Brooks, you know, I, I actually went down, um, to, to South Texas to go hunting and,
10:39uh, this was right after the season. And I said, I was going to Texas, but I never said
10:43Texans or anything like that. And I'm flying home. I get home. I think it was January 30th
10:49or something like that. And Carly goes, Hey, what, what team's dad going to play for? He
10:53said, the Texans. I said, Brooks, how do you even know who the Texans are? Like what? And,
10:59uh, he, that's, that is a real video from January that, you know, it's not like he, uh, he was
11:05paying a million different teams. He's, you know, I think you said, uh, um, two teams
11:09and it was the Texans. And then he said the Browns and I said, buddy, I don't think I'm
11:13going to be on the Browns next year. That's good that, you know, the team that dad plays
11:16for, but, um, but yeah, no, he was, he was all out on the, uh, on the Texans. And I
11:21just
11:21thought that that was like, you know, being a man of faith, it was like, wait, do you know
11:28something? I don't know. But he was also like, like even in the playoffs and it, with the
11:32Superbowl, we would ask him what team he, what team was going to win. And then he was
11:36like seven for eight on the pick. So maybe he's no Saddamas, who knows? But, uh, but
11:40he was doing really well, uh, you know, picking stuff. And then he said that and we were then
11:45here two months, three months later, you know, I'm a Texan. It's like, Whoa, maybe he knows
11:49something. I don't know. I can't wait to start a gambling podcast with his three-year-old
11:53son. It's going to be amazing. I'm a man of faith. And by the way, Brooks is going to
11:59be on with Sean T. And one against the spread on his picks this year, I hope the one that
12:07he didn't get right. Wasn't the Texans. Me too. I thought about that. Me too. Well, you
12:12know what though? No, that would be good. Actually. That would mean that he was at it. Yeah. He
12:15was a, Oh no, no, no, no. I hope that one of the ones that he, maybe he was incorrect
12:19because he picked the Texans to win that could be. Yeah. Yeah. Either way. Um, so yeah. So he
12:26had never said Texans. He just said he was going to Texas. Yeah. That's impressive,
12:30man. And you're right that you asked the two part question and he gave a two minute answer
12:34to the second question and knew to come back to the first question. It was, you know what?
12:40And the question he answered first was a really, he gave a really technical answer about the
12:46difference between playing right guard and left guard, which, and I really loved it. It's
12:50too, it's too technical for radio. Um, but I'll probably do a video on it later, but yeah. Yeah.
12:55That's hard. When you're answering a two part more times than not, usually you get to the end of
12:59answering the first question and you have no memory at all of what the other question. Yep. Yep.
13:04That's way more impressive to me than you might, than you might think. There's three things that
13:08can happen in that instance. One, you just totally, you know, you forget that there was another
13:12question to you go. What was the other question you had again? And then three, which is elite,
13:17which was Wyatt Teller is, and Hey, back to your first question, which was he's a pro's pro.
13:23The, uh, the part about that answer too, that I know a lot of listeners alike is that, yeah,
13:26he was taking a hunting trip to South Texas. We like that. He is all about, he made a reference
13:32yesterday to how I can't, Oh, when he was at Virginia tech, some of his teammates for,
13:37from Texas. And he said, nobody loves the state. Nobody loves their state quite like Texans love
13:41their state or something like that. So he's had, he's had good word of mouth from his college.
13:46Good deal. Good deal.
