Seth and Sean lay out a top 10 of sorts of stuff they found out that excites them about new Texans OL Wyatt Teller.
Transcript
00:00I think most people out there, big fans of what the Texans have done so far in free agency,
00:03we'll see how it ends up playing out. But they've made improvements, at least on paper,
00:09made improvements in a lot of places, including the interior of the offensive line. And I said
00:13this last week, Seth, that it's just, it probably has more to do with the sequencing of when guys
00:19got signed. Like if they signed Wyatt Teller and then Braden Smith, then I'd be saying about
00:25Braden Smith, what we were saying about Teller last week in terms of what it makes available
00:29to the Texans now moving forward. It was really going and getting, re-signing Ed Ingram and getting
00:35two more guys that could play interior offensive line. In the case of Braden Smith, he's probably
00:43going to play right tackle. But the amount of offensive linemen they've gone and gotten
00:50has really, I think, made the draft very interesting coming up next month for sure.
00:55And Wyatt Teller was really the one that kind of moved the needle in that respect.
00:59Right. Yeah. And it was, I almost feel like if they had signed, even if they had signed
01:03Wyatt Teller first, I still might've remember before they signed Wyatt Teller, I had given
01:09the Texans a C plus for free agency. After they signed him, I moved him up to a B. If
01:13they
01:13had signed Wyatt Teller first, I might've had them at a B minus already just because it felt,
01:19it would have felt like, Hey, Trent Brown's your right tackle. Wyatt Teller's your left guard.
01:24Yep. And maybe you draft a guy to, to hopefully work into that right tackle position. Cause I
01:30can't trust that Trent Brown's going to stay healthy for a whole season. Yep. Uh, he's only
01:34had three completely healthy seasons in his 11 year career. So, but yeah, so this, this
01:39bumped it all the way up to a B because they've addressed both the tackle position and an interior
01:44and they've added an interior offensive lineman. Yeah. There's not. No, I mean, they haven't
01:47made a signing. That's this major splash, but that's not what they, other than Daniil Hunter,
01:51they've never made a signing. That's been a major splash. When I was going back and I
01:55was looking at, I got retroactively angry because I went back and I looked at some of
01:59the, uh, I was Googling free agency grades and I just, I, Bill Barnwell did a piece on
02:08the, I think it was after the second day of legal tampering where he had winners and
02:12losers. And he called CJ Stroud a loser because they had made this trade for Montgomery. And
02:19this was before they had done Braden Smith or anything. And free agency hadn't even officially
02:22begun yet. Literally nobody can sign deals or it was maybe it was, it was definitely out
02:26before Braden Smith was signed. Yeah. And I'm just like, ah, again, the Barnwell's a smart
02:31guy. He knows, he knows that the first two days of free agency don't tell you everything
02:36you need to know about it. And at the time too, where I'm looking at all, I remember that
02:42first week and on into the second week, I'm looking at the list of available free agents
02:46and there were a bunch of guards available and guys that are respectable guys. They could
02:51come in and easily be just in pen as the starter in week one. And all these grades are coming
02:56out. I wouldn't mind if they said grading the first couple of days of free agency, but
03:01no, they were saying the free agency grade. Here's your grade. Yeah. You're like, it's
03:05like the SAT. I'm like, they give you a grade and you haven't even taken the math yet. You
03:09know, I haven't even taken half of the test. So, uh, so I've been doing, I've been watching
03:13a lot of Wyatt Teller. I've grown very intrigued by him just because of his unique style of
03:17play. And it's not just that he's violent. It's that he, he's technically really, really
03:22skilled. And he kind of does it. He has a violent style of play. That's different than
03:25a lot of other offensive linemen. Usually I might look at a guy that gets a lot of pancakes
03:29and I'm looking for all the dirty stuff. Yeah. He's not a dirty player at all. He's just
03:34really, really skilled. And yeah, he'll gore guys and everything, but usually it's a defensive
03:39lineman's fault. So I gotta, I gotta give him his respect. So you're okay. So you're
03:44after watching film on him and doing a little bit of research over the weekend, you are excited
03:49about the Wyatt Teller signing. It sounds like to me, Wyatt Teller, the football player,
03:53but also Wyatt Teller, the colorful person. Okay, good. So you, what you're telling me,
03:57what you're about to tell us is that he is the two things that we want the most. Primarily,
04:03we want him to be good at football. I'd rather have good and uninteresting than interesting
04:07and bad. Yeah. But it sounds like he is, he hits the exacto, which he's good at football
04:12and he's an interesting human being as well. He's an interesting human being. And I'll
04:16start off chronologically. Okay. For the most part, we go through these little tidbits
04:20about Wyatt Teller. Okay. Birth weight, 11 pounds, four ounces. Holy smokes. That seems
04:28really, that seems really big. It doesn't seem like it's not Guinness Book of World Record
04:33big or anything. No, no, no. But he's the youngest of five kids. So he shares something
04:37in common with Will Anderson. Okay. He's the youngest child, but in a, in a house full of
04:42giants. Yeah. Cause his three sisters, uh, the shortest one is five foot nine. It looks
04:48like his wife is taller than six foot Carly. We're going to hear from Carly a little bit
04:52later. People like, people like her a lot. Yeah. She's interesting. Yeah. All I'm saying is
04:57this, look, I don't know if Wyatt Teller is still going to be on the team a few years from
05:01now when the new headquarters is in Bridgeland, but if he gets a house up near Bridgeland anticipating
05:06maybe that Bridgeland high school, he's got to work like hell to keep the, the, the Teller
05:11family in Bridgeland because that, those are, those are some genetics, right? They are spitting
05:16out giants in the Teller household. Yes. Yes. Good call, Seth. All right. 11 pounds. Hey,
05:22what, what was your birth weight? Do you know? I was like normal, like not too, like eight pounds,
05:2616 ounces, like a little on the big side, a little on the big side, not 11 pounds. Gotcha.
05:30Yeah. 11 pounds. Heaviest baby according to Guinness book of world records, 22 pounds.
05:35Oh my God. 22 pounds. Anna Haining Bates, 1879 gave birth to a 22 pound boy named, they
05:44nicknamed him Babe. He was born in Ohio. Is that a C-section? It doesn't say. It's not
05:49even a C-section. It's like a C-county. Tragically, he only lived for 11 hours. Well, that's great,
05:55Sean. What a great way to start off the week. All right. Number two. Number two. When Wyatt Teller
05:59was four years old, he got permission to play with the five-year-olds in Pop Warner football.
06:05Oh. I got, I took this from Tyler Dunn. Uh, I go long TD. Yeah. Yeah. Quote, his first practice
06:12ever. Teller took a handoff, ran full speed and speared a kid so hard he broke his sternum.
06:18He broke, Oh dude, he broke a five-year-old sternum. Yes. This is a boy. This has turned into
06:23quite a, quite the bloodbath here. Did that kid die also 11 hours later? He lived, he lived,
06:29he lived. Okay, good. And it was by a four-year-old though. Kid that was 20% younger than
06:33him because
06:34that was a five-year-old that he did it to. That's how you get better at sports is playing
06:38with the older kids. I didn't even, you could, I didn't even know you could break your sternum
06:41when you're that age. It seems like that's when everything's still more cartilage. Yeah.
06:45Yeah. Cause your sternum is kind of a cartilage, the bone. Yeah. Yeah. Um, okay. Number three,
06:52number three. This was interesting. Cause I told you last week, it looked like when I watched him
06:57play, man, he looks like a wrestler and it turns out he's into, he had a coach that was a
07:01Brazilian
07:02jujitsu artist that taught him a lot of his wrestler type maneuvers and everything. Oh, the guy,
07:06the guy, yeah. The guy in Cleveland back in 2020. Yeah. Peters, I think he's a Bengals offensive line
07:11coach now. Uh, but no, he was a high school swimmer and he was coached by his mom. And I
07:18guess
07:19yeah, I see all the, you know, it's one of the things I see that he was an elite swimmer
07:23or a
07:23really good swimmer, but I don't see any awards listed or anything. Yeah. Suffice to say he was a
07:27big freaking swimmer. Yeah. Wow. Okay. And he went to, he was a, um, he was a defensive lineman.
07:34He was the Virginia state defensive player of the year in his senior year at Liberty high school.
07:38Okay. And then Frank Bieber, uh, Frank Beamer recruited him to Virginia tech in his freshman
07:42year. They moved him to office. We're going to put a little more beef on you. We're going to
07:46move you to the offensive line. And the rest is history. I saw a couple of interviews where he
07:49kind of just, uh, yeah, I give him credit cause he pointed out that look, yeah, I wasn't a good
07:54enough athlete to be a defensive lineman, but it was cool. Cause when I got over to the offensive side
07:58of the ball, they thought I was a good athlete. Yeah. Uh, when in fact, uh, yeah, it was, yeah.
08:03Compared to those guys. Yeah. I liked that. I liked that. He confessed to,
08:08just that being the lesser human being and being moved to offensive line. You have a mark of shame
08:13getting moved to O-line. I know we've got a handful more of these to get to you. You see,
08:17are you excited to talk to him at training camp? Yeah. Yeah. It seems like, it seems like he'd be
08:21an interesting guy to talk to. Okay. So this is former Bengals defensive lineman, Mike Daniels.
08:27You skipped number four. I did. Yes. Okay. This is Wyatt Teller. So remember Wyatt Teller started off
08:32as a fifth round draft pick with the bills and played one season with the bills and they ended
08:38up trading them off to the, um, to the Browns. And this is Wyatt Teller on go long TD, uh,
08:46explaining
08:47why the bills traded him. They had another kid, Ike Butker, who was a really good player, but Ike,
08:51um, had just come off an Achilles. He was supposed to get drafted. He didn't. So they picked him up
08:57with
08:57me. Ike is a very smart player. You know, I'm not a dumb player, but it takes me a second.
09:02I have to
09:02study. I have to work, you know, um, yeah, now it's now after a year of six, it's a little
09:08second
09:08nature, but you know, at first I had to learn, I didn't know what fricking duo was no fence in
09:13college. They didn't teach us anything. That man was at Iowa, that man knew offensive line play. So,
09:19you know, it took me a second to kind of mature and learn that aspect of it. Um, but I
09:24think that they
09:25truly believed that, you know, Ike had a very high upside ceiling and that I was kind of at my
09:31ceiling where I was kind of playing, you know, I might get a little bit better, but who knows,
09:35you know? So I think that they were making a business decision with, Hey, we have an undrafted
09:40guy, same size, same length, you know, you know, as smart, smarter than Wyatt. So why would we,
09:47you know, not use this as an advantage for the team? Okay. I like that clip for two reasons. One
09:53shows a certain amount of humility for Wyatt Teller to shows that Brandon beans, an idiot.
09:58And like, why is this the guy that it doesn't not, not only does he not get fired last year
10:04alongside the head coach, he gets elevated to czar of everything football in Buffalo.
10:09They did use that pick as part of the trade for Stefan digs. So it wasn't like it all went
10:14to
10:14crap. Yeah. Yeah. They got two picks for him fifth round and a sixth rounder, but you're right.
10:18Like I think if they had to do it over again, they would have kept Wyatt.
10:21Well, Ike Buckner would go on to, he would start in 2020 and 2021. And then since then,
10:27he's, he's played in three games in the NFL with zero starts. Yep. So it was, uh, probably would
10:32have been, they could have used another pick to use in that step on. Oh, for sure. For sure. Yeah.
10:38I, yeah, that's good. Um, here's, uh, here's Mike Daniels, uh, defensive lineman for the bangles
10:44at the time. This was from the 2022 top 100, uh, players interviews. So this is, uh, this is
10:51interesting because this is Mike Daniels, another defensive lineman who just like me really
10:55respects the way that Wyatt Teller plays. Wyatt is a wrestler. That tells you everything you need to
11:00know about Wyatt Teller. He knows how to grapple. Guys don't know how to counter that. So he gets his
11:06hands on them, turns them. He doesn't torque them, turns them. Two different things. Twerking
11:12is when you're trying to do all that. He little so like that, like that, gets the defense lineman
11:18off balance and pancakes them. Wyatt did that all season. Wyatt Teller, I watched him in the first
11:24game. He beat the crap out of our guys. I like watching butt whoopings. I don't care who's
11:30delivering it. Do I have a defensive bias? I have a butt kicking bias. So whatever position you play,
11:35if you're kicking butt, I'm loving to watch it. I love Wyatt Teller. He was the number 83 player
11:43in the NFL top 100 back in 2022. So, uh, Mike Daniels is telling that story and he'd been injured
11:48the year before. So he's talking about his own teammates getting their butts kicked. And, uh, I,
11:53and really that clip more than anything. Why is Mike Daniels not in media somewhere right now?
11:58He's good. Yeah. Yeah. He was really entertaining. Good energy. He got me sold on him. He's not a
12:03wrestler, uh, like Mike Daniels, but Mike Daniels thought the same thing I did. When you watch him
12:08play, you think, Oh, he must be a wrestler. He plays like a wrestler. That wrestlers. That's the
12:12way the guys that were high school or college wrestlers tend to play offensive line. Yeah. And,
12:16uh, I have a respect for that. It's really, it's really, really impressive. You're getting people
12:20on your side in this one, Seth, on the base power text line, text page. They're liking Wyatt Teller
12:25right now. And you've got even more nuggets to give the people. Some of you are going to like
12:28them a lot more in a little bit. Um, some of you won't. Sean and I got a letter from
12:33PETA this
12:33weekend, uh, that I'm currently in the middle of, I'm drafting a cordial reply to it. Um, but
12:43I'm allowing you to speak for me in the cordial reply. It was, it was a nice letter from PETA.
12:48Uh, she was very, she was very, very cordial. Um, but it's, so I'm going to draft the cordial
12:52reply, but, uh, this is, this is the aforementioned Carly Wyatt Teller's wife in January. She took a
13:02video of their son Brooks and she just posted it to Tik TOK. I think last week, who's like three
13:08years old or something. Yeah. He's a cute young kid climbing on the couch. And this was the exchange
13:13Brooks. What team, what football team do you think daddy's going to play for? Um, um,
13:17the Texans. The Texans? Yes. What's that? Yeah. I don't know what that was. There was no,
13:25there was no epilogue to the story. No, no. I was looking at something. We never found out. So
13:29it was some animal in the yard or something. Yeah. What's that? Yeah. So, uh, now, uh, Wyatt Teller
13:35had made a comment, I think after he signed with the Texans or before about how Carly had said
13:40that, uh, Carly it's, Oh no, no, no. I'm sorry. Braden Smith is the one who said his wife said
13:44that, uh, she just wanted to go somewhere warm. Yes. Um, Wyatt Teller's got some good stories about
13:49like how miserable it is playing in Cleveland. I remember before that he was in Buffalo,
13:53but he tells this story about this time they were playing the saints and the Browns kept trying to
13:59pass the ball. Amari Cooper's like the ball's bouncing off of Amari Cooper's hands and Wyatt Teller
14:04is just thinking like, why are we not running the football? What the hell are we doing? Uh, and,
14:09but he said the best smack talk, the, the saints defensive lineman we're saying was like, yeah,
14:14yeah, but you got to live here after we're done. This sucks, but we're going home. We can play in
14:18a
14:18dome. I think that Wyatt Teller is going to appreciate being, I wonder if he's going to feel
14:21that way when training camp rolls around in July. Yeah. You know, it's a given a take, you know,
14:25you, yes, you get no snow or anything like that. No cold, but you're playing indoors 72 degrees,
14:32but you've got to go through essentially like heat bootcamp. So, uh, August. So our listeners who, uh,
14:39might be falling in love with Wyatt Teller already this next one, some of you are really,
14:43really going to love. Some of you might not love it at first, but just stick around for the,
14:47for the rest of the quote. Okay. Just stick around. I like this quote a lot. This is from
14:52go long TV. Tyler Dunn does incredible job with this stuff. Um, my biggest thing, this is Wyatt
14:57Teller. Yep. My biggest thing. I love America, love my guns, love my hunting, love my fishing,
15:04but I also love having relationships with people that are different than me. Okay. He points to
15:08another teammate on his side of the ball. Who's a super liberal yet be also one of his best
15:13friends on the team. Quote, you still respect them as long as they respect you. There you go.
15:18That's how we should all operate. My God. Wyatt Teller is Americana. His wife bought him a 50 caliber
15:26sniper rifle for his birthday. Uh, at one point, she knows, I call it a sniper rifle. I don't need
15:32usually 50 Cal is the, anyway, it's a, it's a big old gun. Yeah. Like a $10,000 gun. And,
15:38uh,
15:38so he's into it. He loves his guns. He loves high end whiskey too, Sean. He does kind of a
15:42whiskey
15:42kind of. Okay. All right. Well, we're going to get along. He's got a wall of whiskey. Yeah. Oh,
15:46that's beautiful. Hey, can I read a couple of these before we get to the last few nuggets?
15:49They're pretty funny. Um, good Lord. This Wyatt Teller segment is, this is going back to the beginning
15:55of the Wyatt Teller segment. When I cited the, uh, the 22 pound baby that died in 11 hours and
16:00the
16:01sternum broken five-year-old, this is a hell of a way to start your week. It's a good thing.
16:05I
16:05already dropped my kids off at school and they weren't listening. LOL. So he's saying it, um,
16:10text message. I like this guy so much text message. Seth has become Wyatt Teller's personal nugget.
16:16Hussey last one. And then we'll get to these last few in my Clint voice. I'm getting football
16:22horny listening about this guy. Yeah. All right. Hey, Hey, you wanted a culture change on the
16:26offensive line? Here it is. What do we love about Cole Popovich? It's because he fits the stereotype
16:31of the crusty old football coach. He's kind of kind of moody, snarling all the time, yelling,
16:37just grumpy look on his face. Um, uh, will Wyatt Teller be able to handle crusty old Cole Popovich?
16:44Who's like 34 years old. Uh, this is why I tell around which coaching style works for him.
16:49You know, there's, I mean, there's players that you get yelled at and you shut down and
16:54there's players that are, that you yell at, they get mad and they play bad. It sucks. And
16:59I responded to the latter. Yeah. He doesn't mind getting yelled at. Yeah. He was talking
17:05about playing for Brian, uh, for Bill Callahan, legendary offensive line coach. He's a crusty
17:10old dude. And, uh, and it turns out that he responds to that type of coaching. So yeah,
17:15he's going to get it here. Um, this is, uh, number nine. Now these are eight factoids in this
17:22is this one. I didn't know this until this morning when I was trying to round out, round
17:26out the list of 10. He holds a degree in property management from Virginia tech. Specifically,
17:31he studied the business side of land and building management. Okay. Again, Bridgeland. Yes. I feel
17:37like he gave, she, he could do an internship with Howard Hughes. He would have an in with that
17:42with the Texans for sure. An internship with Howard Hughes. Absolutely. I wonder if he owns,
17:46he's got to own some land, right? He's got to be, you know, I don't know. He's probably going to
17:50own
17:51a, uh, at least have a hunting lease or something. Yeah. Texas. I wonder, I think he's probably really
17:55excited about just everything. Uh, uh, he's big into his guns and, uh, he's any land where he can
18:02shoot stuff. I think any stereotype about Texas or anything, like he's like, hell yeah, that's what,
18:07yep. I'm here for it. Um, he, uh, the, the, the few enough for number 10 to surround it out.
18:13He's got ADHD, but he's pretty open about it. Talks about it a lot. He's an avid golfer. He likes
18:19high-end whiskey and guns. Boom. Okay. There it is. There it is. All right. Wyatt Teller, man. I am
18:25down with, uh, I'm down with Wyatt Teller as an interesting group. They got there now in the
18:30offensive line. Great. And Smith seems like an interesting guy. Yep. Yep. Yep. Yep. Should be good,
18:35man. Should be a good, uh, good training camp when these fellas get here. OTAs. It's going
18:39to be here soon. The spring mini camp or, uh, uh, training is coming up pretty soon for these
18:44guys. That was good stuff.
