00:01Welcome to Half-Life Alyx.
00:04To listen to a commentary node, pick up the floating hologram of a radio headset in front of you, and
00:09simply put it on your head.
00:16Our first prototype was extremely rudimentary.
00:19And as a result, we built dozens of prototypes over the next few years.
00:23Teaching design elements is always tricky. We knew we'd need to do significant work.
00:28First, the players did not like to be shot at.
00:31We learned that sometimes a character performance can have unintended consequences.
00:36We were already grappling with the challenge of keeping this level well-paced and within scope.
00:40There were other problems, too.
00:42We didn't want this mechanic to feel too gamey or magical.
00:45In VR, we found it was sometimes all too easy to create an intense atmosphere.
00:50But how should we fictionally place them in this destroyed space?
00:53The problem was that playtesters felt cheated that they didn't get to destroy the striver.
00:58So we spent months refining this section.
01:01This looked like things had gone horribly wrong.
01:04But players themselves consistently cited this as a high point of their playthroughs.
01:08We authored a set of individual key press sounds to be driven by animation.
01:11These sounds helped alert players to the presence of barnacles.
01:15We used a physical gesture to activate the pole instead of a button press.
01:19To provide the controller's instantaneous velocity and acceleration data.
01:23The liquid surface is then displaced by a number of sine waves, modulated with the agitation value to create rippling
01:30waves.
01:30We created the tongue as a particle system.
01:32Players once again were fighting the reviver as intended, and they no longer wanted to take it home as a
01:37pet.
01:37And the club sandwich speech was resurrected.
01:40We also designed the death animations to emphasize the abdomen exploding.
01:44And ensured that an exploded abdomen chunk was left behind after the ant lion was dead.
01:49And their dialogue is designed to inform the player that the strider they have found may not be dead.
01:55We updated the sounds to be more threatening, but for this headcrab we brought back some of the cuter sounds
02:00to sell the headcrab's frustration with the mannequin.
02:06Classic headcrab nonsense.
