00:04Stimber
00:05Hi everyone, I'm Stimber
00:06the designer on The Last Campfire
00:07and I'd like to show you an Xbox One exclusive
00:10of a couple of moments taken from the first minutes of the game
00:13Our story begins in the dark
00:16in a hopeless place
00:17where a lost ember sleeps
00:22This is really exciting for me actually
00:24we've been working on this game for a few years
00:26and it's really nice to be able to show other people
00:29what we're working on
00:37This is ember
00:38and somehow they've become lost
00:43Ember ran without hesitation
00:48The wall glistened in the light
00:56The painting glowed reacting to ember's presence
01:00It showed a moment from the first ember story
01:04Ember just hoped it would show the way home
01:07What you're seeing now is the narrator
01:09She follows you through the game and fills out some of the backstory as you're travelling and reacts to your
01:13actions
01:13It was a relief to find someone else
01:16Though the stranger was deathly still
01:20Hopefully you can see that the world looks quite charming
01:22but you'll feel that there's a real undercurrent of darkness
01:25That's what we're trying to get across
01:26Ember froze almost too frightened to look away
01:30When I noticed a small satchel
01:33I think this kind of charming dark fantasy is something you don't really see that often in games
01:41I really love this moment with ember
01:42It's the first time ember's seen a skeleton
01:45Despite that ember's first thought is empathy
01:48A little touch on the shoulder to say sorry and pay respect
01:54The satchel felt heavy
01:56Ember looked inside
01:59Inside was a gold statue moulded in the likeness of the first ember
02:05On the floor was the symbol of a campfire
02:08We've taken a lot of different inspirations for making the game
02:11Illustrated books and movies like The Dark Crystal or Labyrinth
02:18Something about the door felt wrong
02:21And we really wanted to tell a story that would fit in that style
02:23And just like those stories there's hints that as you play
02:26This won't always be a happy tale
02:30Moments like this are down to our artist Chris Simons
02:32He's our entire art team
02:34Just one man has made all the art and animation that you can see
02:37Ember departed
02:39Thinking only of the stranger
02:40Now left in the dark
02:42He's put so many beautiful little touches and moments in
02:45I think people really enjoy just
02:46Taking in all the scenery as they're wandering around
02:49The stairway led to an unfamiliar forest
02:53If the stories of the first ember were true
02:56A path through the forest would lead to the campfire
03:00Sometimes I'm playing a new build
03:02And I'm used to seeing this white box layout and I've taken it back
03:05He's transformed it completely with so much love
03:10The flame called out to Ember
03:12Ember tried to listen
03:21So the cage you see ahead there is a place where hope has become trapped
03:28The flame was almost within reach
03:31We wanted the interactions to feel really tactile
03:33You don't just press a button
03:35You're pulling on a lever or tugging at the chain
03:37The flame spoke and Ember listened
03:40This tactile feel becomes really important and a big part of the game later on
03:47Most games with puzzles tend to have a format of a series of increasingly difficult versions of the same puzzle
03:52But for campfire we were trying to make it so that each puzzle you encounter feels new or has a
03:56unique twist
03:56It's almost like a smorgasbord of all different types of logic puzzles
04:01Like here as you step out into the forest for the first time
04:04It's a welcome relief to be outside
04:06But then you kind of realise that this forest still might not be safe
04:11And I think they're just understanding that this place they're trapped in
04:13Is a dangerous one and they might never escape
04:17Finding and rekindling hope is actually one of the big themes at the heart of the game
04:22And learning to appreciate just how fragile that hope can be
04:25As the forlorn Ember awoke, the campfire flickered into life
04:32Well, thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed this sneak peek
04:39Thank you
