00:00So I know that it's not surprising at all, like just what we know about Matt Fitzpatrick as a competitor,
00:05but in those series of conversations with him, what just stood out to you about the headspace he was in?
00:12A lot of guys, that's a tough loss that takes time to recover. Feels like he was already ready just
00:17to keep moving and, you know, no better evidence than what he did this week at Ennisbrook.
00:21Well, you kind of see either one of the two things happen after a week like that. You either see
00:25a player compete and have a chance to win and do what Matt Fitzpatrick did, or they come out Thursday
00:34so flat.
00:35They're four over through nine holes, Rick. Why did I play this week? And luckily enough for Fitzy, that wasn't
00:41the case. This guy really played Copperhead the proper way.
00:45And it was a golf course that fit his game. It's a place that you got to be super accurate.
00:50It's a lot of dog legs, firm golf courses.
00:54And he played fabulous. And I'm not surprised at all. And I really need to start reevaluating my one and
00:59done picks because we talked about him.
01:02It's just stupid, man. Like I, I wanted, I said like, there's no way I don't use him. I've done
01:08that so many times this year.
01:09I just overthink one and done where Fitzy was always, it was always the answer this week. And, um, like
01:16the whole week, everybody's like, who do you think is going to win?
01:18I was like, Fitzy's going to win. Stop asking me. Like, it's, it's a no brainer. This guy is going
01:23to end up at the top of this leaderboard, uh, head, especially heading to the weekend.
01:27I was like, this, there's, there's just not enough. There wasn't, there wasn't enough of a lead on Fitzy at
01:34this point for me to think that, that he wasn't going to win this golf tournament.
01:38And, uh, it was wild. It really was an interesting tournament because that Sunday felt like was a single digit
01:47under par going to win this golf course today.
01:49Cause that's kind of how it felt there for a while. Yeah. And, and we can, I want to unpack
01:54the day, uh, you know, in, in depth.
01:56I think the place that I think is interesting to start is talking about what Matt Mark Blackburn said recently
02:02on our show about the work he's done with Matt Fitzpatrick and what that's translated to right now in terms
02:07of his play.
02:07And, and Fitz talked about that as well as press conference. Uh, there's a quote in here where he said,
02:12there's a big difference in my approach play.
02:14My irons are just so much better, just better control, better distance control, better accuracy, left to right hitting the
02:20shape.
02:21I want to hit. I've always felt like the short game has been good enough.
02:23I felt like the driving has always been good enough and the putting has been good enough.
02:27So approach play always felt like it was the missing link last week at the players.
02:31He was second in strokes, gain T to green this week at bounce bar.
02:35He was first in strokes, gain T to green. You were with that group on Sunday.
02:39The player is watching him hit that bullet cut off the T all day long in your perfection.
02:43And then, you know, that T shot at 18 Sunday at bounce bar, just, I think the apex was 57
02:49feet sets up the approach shot to make birdie to win the tournament.
02:53What's standing out to you right now with his golf swing, particularly in the context of what Mark joined us
02:59on the show to discuss.
03:00Well, his golf swing is a dial, you know, he's able to move it both ways, uh, bring, bring the
03:06flight, uh, you know, whether it be up or down.
03:08Um, but I love with his iron game, the fact that he can, he can fade stuff to right pins
03:13and he could turn stuff to left pins.
03:14And I think that's, uh, and it's not like big draws or big fades.
03:18It's just, it just falls one way or another.
03:20And it's the proper shot time after time, hardly see big miss hits from him.
03:25Uh, for the most part, it feels like he's always hitting the back of the ball.
03:28Uh, but I, outside of his golf swing though, Charlie, like I love that he's got this, that low driver
03:34that he can hit.
03:35He talked about it with me on happy hour, but just it, from watching Fitzy over the last two weeks,
03:41what really stands out to me is that pressure just doesn't seem to affect him.
03:50And I think at the player's championship, I felt that way.
03:54Uh, I've seen him play at the Ryder cup.
03:56It just feels like when the situation gets heightened, he seems to slow down and feel like he's going to
04:05hit the shot that, that, uh, that he needs to at that time.
04:08And not many people have that.
04:10I think he's one of, one of 10 guys probably on tour that you put on a short list of
04:14guys that, that really feels that, that I just, he just doesn't look like he gets nervous, man.
04:20And it's, it's a rare quality to have.
