00:07end you're going to get a surprise this is a story of a friend of mine and it's
00:13a story that touches my heart and makes that aha moment happen for me every
00:19single time you know there are moments in life that look small while they are
00:24happening and yet they can divide a life into a before and after most people do
00:33not recognize those moments when they arrive they do not come with music they
00:38do not come with a spotlight and they do not announce themselves as destiny they
00:47look ordinary they happen on regular streets in regular towns in the middle of
00:53regular pain but God God has always done some of his deepest work in places the
01:02world would never think to call holy when young Carlos and his family moved to the
01:11little town of Miami Arizona there was one thing that made him dread the place it was
01:19not the desert air and it was not the size of the town it was the boy next door his
01:27name was Bobby he was the same age as Carlos he was in the same grammar school
01:34class but he was bigger and every day he chased Carlos home most days he caught him
01:44and beat him up Carlos kept running because running felt safer than standing he kept
01:51running because fear teaches a person to think survival is the best they can hope
01:57for he kept running because when you were small and somebody stronger keeps coming at
02:04you retreat can start to feel like the only language a lot of people understand that kind of running don't
02:14we even if our bullies do not have a name like Bobby you know some people have
02:21spent years running from rejection some people run from conflict some people run from old shame some
02:31people run from the memory of being humiliated some people run because life taught them early that
02:40that standing their ground would only get them hurt harder so they learn to withdraw they learn to avoid they
02:51learn to live one step ahead of what threatens them and that kind of fear does not only live in
02:59children
03:00it follows grown people into marriages jobs churches and our private thoughts it teaches us to brace it teaches us
03:13to shrink it teaches us that safety is found in retreat but right next to the cottages where Carlos and
03:24Bobby lived was a gas station the owner's name was Jack
03:28and every day Jack watched the same sad scene play out he watched the bigger boy chase the smaller boy
03:37he watched the smaller boy run he watched the bully catch him he watched the beating happen again and again
03:48day after day
03:50Jack may also have known that Carlos's father was an alcoholic and mostly oblivious to what his son was dealing
04:02with that matters because you know there are seasons in life when the people who should have stepped in do
04:10not there are seasons when the protection you needed never came from where it should have come
04:18there are seasons when the child version of a person learns to carry pain without help that kind of silence
04:27that kind of silence leaves a mark
04:33then one day
04:36Jack decided that he was going to step in
04:38he went to Carlos's mother and told her to stay in the house that day
04:43and not interfere
04:45she agreed
04:47then
04:48right on schedule
04:50little Carlos came running past the gas station toward home
04:55and Bobby
04:56was not in sight yet
04:58but
04:59he was coming
05:00Jack stopped Carlos and said he wanted a word with him
05:04Carlos tried to explain politely but urgently
05:08that he could not stop
05:11he had to get inside right away because Bobby was chasing him
05:15and would be there any minute
05:18Jack would not let him go
05:21he told him he was not going anywhere
05:24he told him he was going to stand up and fight that boy right now
05:29and Carlos pleaded that Bobby was too big
05:32but Jack
05:34would not back down
05:36he told him he was not going to run away
05:39anymore
05:41and
05:41that's where this story becomes bigger than one playground struggle
05:46you see there are moments when God sends somebody into your life
05:51not merely to comfort your fear
05:54but to break your agreement with it
05:58not every act of love feels soft at first
06:01sometimes love puts a hand on your shoulder and says
06:05enough running
06:08sometimes grace does not only soothe
06:12sometimes it strengthens
06:14and sometimes the mercy of our God arrives through somebody who sees that the pattern
06:20cannot continue
06:22and they refuse to let your fear keep writing your future
06:27the world often thinks kindness always means making people comfortable
06:33but sometimes
06:35sometimes the truest kindness
06:38is helping a person discover that what has been chasing them
06:42is not invincible after all
06:46as Jack kept urging him on
06:49Carlos got braver
06:52then Bobby arrived
06:54instead of running
06:56Carlos stood up to him
06:58he wrestled the bully to the ground
07:00it was a brief fight
07:02and when it was over
07:03Bobby cried out
07:05and then he gave up
07:07just like that
07:08the pattern was broken
07:11the boy who had done the chasing surrendered
07:15the boy who had done the running stood his ground
07:18and as Jack had known from the start
07:23Bobby never chased Carlos again
07:26in fact
07:28the story says they later became friends
07:33and that is how fear loses some of its power
07:36not always in one giant public triumph
07:40but in a moment
07:42a person turns around
07:43and faces what has been ruling them
07:46the enemy loves repetition
07:50because repetition builds identity
07:53if he can make you run long enough
07:56you begin to think of yourself as a runner
07:58if he can make you retreat long enough
08:02you begin to think of yourself as weak
08:04and if he can make you absorb humiliation long enough
08:08you begin to believe humiliation is normal
08:13but one moment of courage can break a pattern
08:18that has been writing itself into your soul
08:21for years
08:22one moment can say
08:26this does not get to keep happening
08:28one moment can say
08:31I am not who fear has been telling me
08:34I am
08:35and that's one reason the Bible keeps calling people to stand
08:40not because standing is easy
08:43not because standing means you're never afraid
08:46but because there are battles you do not win
08:50by running forever
08:52David had to walk toward Goliath
08:55Moses
08:56well Moses had to face Pharaoh
08:58and Esther
09:00had to go in
09:02before the king
09:03the disciples had to keep preaching
09:06in a world that wanted them silent
09:09standing is
09:10not always loud
09:11and it is not always glamorous
09:14but sometimes
09:15it is just the moment
09:17somebody finally refuses
09:19to let fear be lord
09:21over their choices
09:23anymore
09:25now
09:26I know that this looks like
09:29a small childhood episode
09:30one of those little rough edges
09:33that fill early life
09:34but for Carlos
09:36well you see
09:38for Carlos
09:39it was not small at all
09:41the day he turned around
09:44and stood his ground
09:45helped make him
09:47what he became
09:48afterward
09:49people later knew him
09:52as the world middleweight karate champion
09:54from 1968
09:56to 1974
10:00and then
10:01as the star of films like
10:03A Force of One
10:05Delta Force
10:06and
10:06Code of Silence
10:10you see
10:11the whole point
10:13was that
10:13before the championships
10:16before the image
10:17of toughness
10:19before the legend
10:21there was a scared
10:23little boy
10:23trying to outrun a bully
10:25until one man
10:27stopped the running
10:29and
10:30this is why
10:30this story matters
10:32spiritually
10:33because we live
10:35in a world
10:35that celebrates
10:36the finished image
10:37and
10:38forgets the hidden
10:39turning point
10:40we admire
10:42the strong man
10:43and overlook
10:44the frightened child
10:45he used to be
10:46we notice
10:48the victory
10:49and miss
10:49the day
10:50somebody helped him
10:51break his pact
10:52with fear
10:53we see
10:55the outer power
10:56and forget
10:57the inner moment
10:58when a soul
10:59first learned

11:20when courage
11:20begins to wake

11:22heaven pays
11:24attention
11:24to what the
11:25world
11:26calls
11:27small
11:30and maybe
11:31that's the
11:31part of this
11:32that somebody
11:33listening right
11:34now needs
11:34most
11:35you see
11:36you may
11:37still be
11:38living inside
11:39the running
11:40stage
11:40you
11:42may be
11:43structuring
11:44your life
11:44around what
11:45chases you
11:46maybe
11:47it's not a
11:48person anymore
11:49maybe it's
11:51anxiety
11:52maybe it's
11:53shame
11:54or
11:55maybe it's
11:56an old
11:57wound
11:59could be a
12:00voice in
12:00your head
12:00that keeps
12:01telling you
12:02that you
12:02are too
12:02small
12:03too weak
12:04too far
12:06behind
12:06too damaged
12:09too late
12:11but
12:12the Lord
