00:00.
00:06Hello and welcome everyone.
00:08We are in Cologne at Gamescom 2019.
00:12My name is Nims
00:12and today Nintendo presents a more in-depth look
00:15at The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Complete Edition.
00:19Now joining us today we have a very special guest
00:21from CD Projekt Red.
00:23We have Myles Toast joining us.
00:24Hello Myles, thank you so much for joining us today.
00:27Thank you for having me, it's a pleasure.
00:28Awesome, and from Nintendo of Europe we have Kaveh.
00:31Hello Kaveh.
00:32Hi Nims, hello everyone.
00:33Thank you for joining us.
00:34Now Kaveh, we're going to be taking a look at this game
00:37in handheld mode.
00:38That is correct Nims.
00:40So thanks to a little bit of Nintendo magic
00:41we're able to show you what the game looks like
00:44in handheld mode.
00:45Amazing.
00:46So our viewers out there will see within a Switch frame
00:49basically a one-to-one representation
00:51of what the game is like in handheld mode.
00:54Meaning that for users out there that may be watching in full HD
00:57what they will see within the Switch frame will be a one-to-one representation
01:01of what it's like to play this game on the go.
01:04Right, which is a big thing.
01:07I'm excited about that.
01:09So Myles, for the viewers who are watching at home
01:12could you give us an introduction to The Witcher 3
01:17and tell us a little bit about maybe the storyline
01:20and things to do with this chapter?
01:22Yes.
01:23So The Witcher 3 is a narrative-driven action RPG
01:27set in a medieval fantasy world.
01:29And players take over the role of a character called Geralt of Rivia.
01:34And Geralt of Rivia is a Witcher.
01:37A kind of, you know, how would you say, like a monster hunter?
01:41A professional monster hunter who, other than just hunting monsters,
01:46he's actually uniquely equipped for this
01:48because being a Witcher means that you have undergone
01:51a certain set of mutations that give you superhuman abilities,
01:54reflexes and strength, making him uniquely qualified
01:58to go through the job of being a monster hunter.
02:01And Geralt has sort of taken on the ultimate contract,
02:05which is to find the Child of Prophecy.
02:09Oh, wow, I'm sold.
02:11Let's go.
02:14So yeah, let's go.
02:15Let's start.
02:16You may have noticed there there was a marker
02:18that was displayed about the guarded treasure.
02:21That's going to be in this area here,
02:22but it seems to be protected by a Vyvern.
02:25So I'm going to go take care of that.
02:28And as you may have seen just now, Geralt automatically wielded a sword there.
02:32And I believe this is a silver sword and you can have multiple swords in this game.
02:36Exactly.
02:37Witchers usually use two kinds of swords.
02:40They use a steel sword for beasts and min,
02:43and then they use a silver sword for magical creatures and apparitions.
02:49And we can actually see this here with the silver HP bar that this beast has,
02:54that, you know, the silver sword is indeed the right choice.
02:56But Geralt will make that choice for us,
02:58so we don't really need to worry about which sword we're using.
03:02And I've also just used the Witcher sign there.
03:05So Witcher sign are spells, right, that you can use as well in combat.
03:11Yes.
03:12As a Witcher, Geralt is able to sort of utilize a basic form of magic.
03:16And this basic form of magic allows him to cast so-called signs.
03:21And we just saw here the Igni sign, which allows you to cast this fiery blast.
03:24We have the protective Quen sign, for example, that casts a shield around you.
03:30Or one of my favorites is actually the Urdan sign,
03:32which generates a trap on the ground that if monsters run into,
03:35they'll be temporarily stunned.
03:38Right.
03:40So here we go.
03:41Now that we've taken care of this ribbon, we can just find this guarded treasure.
03:45So one thing you can do is use Witcher sensors,
03:47which allow you to highlight kind of interactive elements of the environment.
03:52And here this helps us unveil this guarded treasure that we were looking for here.
03:56This is just one example of what you can find when you're exploring through the world.
04:00I'm going to go for a small walk here and see if I can find something else in this area.
04:07I mean, just looking at this particular view right now, it looks absolutely huge.
04:11So a small walk is an interesting choice there, Kabe.
04:16Yeah, we haven't really gotten the best of weather nowadays here.
04:19But again, that's such as the price of having a dynamic weather system, right?
04:23To which the world also reacts.
04:25Right.
04:26Which is really cool.
04:27And it actually makes a difference whether we're fighting in the rain or in the sunshine for certain types of
04:32monsters.
04:33Right.
04:33Could you tell us a little bit about these monsters we've got here, Miles?
04:36Yeah, these are Rot Fiends.
04:37And as you can see, as they're defeated, they blow up and explode.
04:40Which, you know, is a good thing to know.
04:43So Geralt knows, or you as a player, know that you need to move away from them to prevent any
04:48damage, right?
04:48And it's an important skill as a professional monster hunter to know what you're dealing with.
04:54And we even offer what we call the bestiary, right?
04:57Where players actually, throughout their journey and throughout their contact with different monsters,
05:02can gather and collect the knowledge that they have.
05:05Much also like on these devourers that just...
05:08Oh, wow.
05:11And as I said, it's really important to learn some of the strengths and weaknesses of any kind of monster,
05:16as you see here, to be able to react to them and come in well prepared.
05:21Alright.
05:22So, yeah, thank you very much for this introduction to the multiple things you can do here.
05:27I'm gonna have a quick look now at the inventory to just showcase all these different things that you can
05:32equip yourself with.
05:33I tried using the crossbow earlier with not much success, I have to admit.
05:38But you can also, like, use potions and bombs as well to do a lot of damage or to destroy
05:44the monster nest as I just did on screen.
05:45But one thing I would like to have a closer look at is the character tab, Miles.
05:50Yes.
05:50Can you talk a bit about what this character tab is about?
05:53Absolutely.
05:53So here's basically where you spend your talent points, your ability points to customize how you can play Geralt, right?
06:00If you're really into sword fighting, then you can branch into the combat tree, which focuses down on that
06:05and makes Geralt sort of this almost, you know, dancing sword fighter, a very powerful melee combatant.
06:13Whereas if you are more into magic, for example, you can invest into the science tree that dramatically enhances your
06:19magical abilities.
06:21For example, the Igni sign can be improved to create a 360 degree fiery burst around you, which is pretty
06:28cool.
06:28Wow.
06:29And then last but not least, Witchers are pretty crafty people.
06:32So they engage into a lot of alchemy brewing potions, which can help them against certain monster types.
06:38Again, that ties into knowing what kind of beast you're dealing with, right?
06:42The right medicine for the right sickness, if you will, right?
06:47And also you can craft bombs, right?
06:50And these can be useful, for example, when fighting vampires.
06:53Vampires might need a silver bomb because they have the tendency to turn invisible.
06:58And with a silver shrapnel bomb, you can defeat this ability and render them visible and make them a much
07:04easier foe to defeat.
07:06And, of course, all these talents that you can invest, you can then modify using these mutagens, which you get
07:12from slaying monsters.
07:13So you can see here how slaying monsters directly improves your ability to slay monsters.
07:19And matching the specific color of the mutagen to the talents that you've chosen, in this case we see a
07:26very general build, right?
07:28You're not meant to, or not meant to, but you're not necessarily bound to having to invest into a specific
07:35skill.
07:36But you can create a hybrid to suit your own tastes, right?
07:39And these mutagens improve those abilities when you match them properly.
07:44There you go.
07:45And as you can see here on the screen, I have indeed created a well-rounded character.
07:49So I've invested in multiple different skills and all assigned them to me so that I have a bit of
07:53extra attack power,
07:54but also a bit of extra sign power and develop my signs a bit further.
08:00All right.
08:00So now I'm just going to call Roach, our dear friend.
08:04Our trusty Steve.
08:06Here he comes.
08:08Yeah, but customization like this is really important to us when we create RPG experiences, right?
08:13You'll want to be able to, you know, use the equipment that you want to use to upgrade your character
08:18and have the sense of progression of becoming stronger and better.
08:21And you can do this by, you know, with the tools that you craft, by improving the tools that you
08:26have,
08:26or acquiring new armor and swords.
08:29So calling Roach is great, but having somewhere to go is even better.
08:35So I'm just going to have a quick look at the world map here.
08:40Nothing wrong with just galloping around that.
08:42I would do that.
08:44And here we can basically see the map of Novigrad and No Man's Land.
08:52Exactly.
08:52So these are two of our hub worlds, essentially.
08:55Huge connected areas that the player in by itself will be able to explore freely
08:59without any loading screens actually interrupting your experience.
09:02And I will set a marker here in Novigrad.
09:05That will be my goal now.
09:06Okay.
09:07But before I go there, I want to show the world map because this is just a part of it,
09:11right?
09:12Exactly.
09:12So in addition to this region, you have a lot more regions that you can explore,
09:17including the Duchy of Toussaint.
09:20Yes.
09:20Which was added later on, right?
09:23Exactly.
09:24It's the big sort of extra region we added as part of our second expansion, Blood & Wine.
09:30And players of the Complete Edition will have free access to that, you know,
09:34because that's why it's the Complete Edition.
09:35It has all the content we've ever released for the game on one cartridge.
09:40Faster.
09:41All right.
09:42That's it.
09:43I will now make my way to Novigrad.
09:47Yeah, we can see here that, as I said, you know, you're able to move through this world completely freely.
09:52There's no loading screens unless you choose to fast travel between places and the continent, right?
09:59But other than that, you can, you know, we see the big city there in the distance,
10:03and we'll just be able to approach us just like that.
10:05Even entering interiors like these houses that we see in front of us,
10:10all that happens without any loading screens.
10:12Wow.
10:15And that makes the whole experience very seamless, right?
10:18You see also a huge amount of NPCs being rendered here,
10:22really allowing this sort of place to come to life.
10:24And it's really important for us to create an immersive environment
10:27and an immersive world that you really can get lost in.
10:33Okay.
10:34So this particular area we're about to enter into, Miles,
10:37could you tell us a little bit about it in terms of maybe the inspiration behind the design?
10:41Yes, absolutely.
10:43So the city we're approaching is the biggest city in our game.
10:46It's called Novigrad.
10:48And you can sort of think about it as sort of medieval Amsterdam in a way, right?
10:53It's actually also quite a bit inspired by that, you know,
10:57it being a medieval trades town with a harbor.
11:01And that's sort of important for us how we think about these places that we create, right?
11:05We try to root them in like logical ways.
11:09Like how would this city, why does it exist here?
11:11It has a harbor, so it's rich for trade.
11:13You know, that's what makes it have its place in the world.
11:18And Geralt himself, he will sort of dive deep into this city as part of also the main story.
11:23But it's also a place where you can pick up many side quests, many side activities,
11:28you know, talk to different characters, buy new gear at vendors.
11:32So it's really a rich place where that offers a lot of different things for the player to do.
11:40So I believe, Kaveh, we are heading to the marker that you set on the map, is that correct?
11:44Yeah, that is correct.
11:47And here, yeah, we can see a lot of townsfolk.
11:50There's also a merchant, as you can see there.
11:54He's also indicated on the minimap with virus icons showing them.
11:58I just wanted to take a moment to go talk to him because he seems to be a Gwent aficionato.
12:07He likes Gwent.
12:11And this is sort of this ongoing quest, right, in the game where you can play cards, basically.
12:16Yes, it's a more light-hearted side activity that Geralt also likes to dabble in,
12:21a kind of card game that people in this world play all across the world, essentially,
12:27independent of where you are.
12:29And, yeah, Geralt will be able to find lots of good challenges
12:31and also gain some cool rewards, complete decks,
12:35and even there you'll be able to sort of choose your favorite deck,
12:38you know, the one that suits your playstyle,
12:39and engage in this quite crafty side experience.
12:44And here we have Nidas.
12:46Okay.
12:47I will talk to Nidas.
12:53Not exactly what it is about.
12:55Not quite.
12:55What's it about?
12:56I hear right you're going on some voyage, need a companion.
13:00Not just some voyage.
13:03Cross the sea.
13:04Mark this.
13:05When I got pressed into the infantry in 1242,
13:09I promised my beloved letter I'd return alive, whole, and with a pearl from Skellige.
13:14Not just any pearl either.
13:15It's a big promise.
13:16A pearl.
13:17The rarest of most precious.
13:18Not just any pearl either.
13:20For a world, ambitious.
13:22Perhaps, but they were empty words.
13:25I came from the war, that one and the next,
13:28but I never fulfilled my promise.
13:30My time to change that.
13:32Or if not now, then when?
13:35Thing is, I've grown old in the meantime, as you see.
13:40Can't manage it alone?
13:41Need a strong shoulder to lean on.
13:44Put your shoulders as strong as they come.
13:46So, what do you say?
13:48What do you say, Kaveh?
13:52Doesn't sound like a good deal, but I'll help this guy.
13:56Why not?
13:58Geralt seems to agree.
13:59I'll help you out.
14:02Don't you fret about coin.
14:04I brought home a good deal of it from various fronts.
14:07Say we meet in Skellige, by the collapsed bridge near Arenbjorn.
14:12It's but a hop away from the bed where black pearls are born.
14:15Will that work for you?
14:17Sounds fine.
14:18See you there.
14:19Alright.
14:21We've committed.
14:24So, I'm going to commit further by setting this quest as my next objective here.
14:30So, Miles, could you tell us a little bit about what we were just seeing there,
14:34in terms of there's different quests you can set and different types of quests.
14:40Kaveh just set that one as his quest that he's going to focus on right now.
14:43Can you build upon that and do different types of quests as well?
14:47Sure, absolutely.
14:47So, I mean, we at CD Projekt Red, we pride ourselves on being storytellers.
14:52For us, the story is sort of the central thing that drives everything we do when we make our games.
14:59And such Witcher 3 features what I hope to be an immersive and gripping main story.
15:06And, of course, also a huge variety of different side quests.
15:09But the cool thing that we try to do with many of these side quests is,
15:12of course, some of them are sort of independent,
15:14but many of them are actually tied into the main story in one way or another.
15:18And you'll actually have this where sometimes you won't actually be able to tell
15:21where the main story ends, where a side quest begins,
15:24because the side story you chose might have been spawned
15:27because of your experiences in the main quest.
15:30And likewise, the side quest might actually affect the outcome of your main story.
15:36So Witcher 3 has many, many different possible endings
15:40that really depend on the choices that you make throughout the main story.
15:43And we always like to say, your choices, your consequences.
15:48What you choose to do, you'll have to live with.
15:50I noticed to cover you were looking at a notice board as well.
15:53Is that where you can pick up some quests as well, Miles?
15:55Yes. You know, if you're not really being approached by good old needers over there,
16:00you might find some work looking at one of the many notice boards
16:03that you'll find all across the world in many, many different villages.
16:07and they actually grant a lot of awesome background lore as well to the world.
16:12But, you know, lots of work for Witcher to do.
16:14All right. I was just taking a look at that map there again.
16:18That map is huge. I'm just completely blown by it.
16:22Miles, could you tell us how did you and your team manage to get such a gigantic game on the
16:29Nintendo Switch?
16:30It's actually quite impressive to me as well as well, right?
16:34Having originally worked on the game and seeing it now work on the Switch.
16:38And we had a little bit of help here actually by our friends over at Saber Interactive.
16:43And at some point they proposed to us or they actually showcased us like,
16:47hey, look what we did. We can actually do it.
16:49And when we saw it was possible, we basically immediately jumped for it.
16:52because the idea of having players, you know, actually enjoy the game wherever they are
16:58is very appealing to us. Again, experiencing the stories we want to tell, right?
17:02No matter where you are.
17:06Oh, a bit of rain here. Okay.
17:10So, yeah, as you can see on the screen,
17:12Skellige looks quite different from where we just were.
17:16Could you tell us a little bit about this particular area, Miles?
17:18As Kaveh just said, it looks a lot different from where we just were.
17:22Yes. So, Skellige is very different from Novigrad and No Man's Land
17:26in that Novigrad and No Man's Land has a lot of inspiration
17:29from a sort of Slavic Middle Eastern...
17:32Middle Eastern...
17:34Eastern European is the proper term.
17:37Sort of culture and also mythology when it comes to the monsters.
17:41But here in Skellige, we're facing sort of a heavily inspired area
17:45by the Vikings and Norse mythology, right?
17:50So, you'll see this actually in the architecture, in the vegetation,
17:53the way people talk.
17:55People, depending on the region you are, actually have a different dialect as well
17:58that you'll be able to hear and sort of identify them as, you know,
18:02that's a Skellige, that's a guy from Novigrad.
18:05And that's actually really fascinating.
18:06Again, we're trying to create the most believable worlds that we can.
18:10and part of that is even, you know, extending that to our voice acting.
18:17Cave, very brave, sailing in the rain.
18:20Yes, in a storm.
18:23Raindrops actually on the...
18:24That is very cool.
18:26It's very cool, yeah.
18:27The water physics in general are very, very impressive, I have to say.
18:31It looks fantastic.
18:32It's a pity that we, you know, didn't get the best of weathers,
18:35but it's part of having a fully dynamic, not only day and night cycle,
18:39but also weather system that, as I said earlier,
18:41that actually affects how monsters behave and, you know,
18:44it might not be the best idea to go out hunting for monsters on a rainy day
18:49when those monsters might be, you know, affiliated with water elements.
18:55Ah, right.
18:57I like what you did there.
18:58Didn't give away too much for the players.
19:00I'm so excited about time.
19:00The element of surprise in there.
19:02I like that.
19:04So, yeah, here I'm just making my way to the marker we can see.
19:07Whoops, sorry about that.
19:09You can see on the minimap.
19:14To hopefully find our dear friend Nidus again.
19:17And it's cool that, you know, we offer the players also a lot of different ways
19:20to traverse this huge open world.
19:22As you can see here, we have a boat.
19:23So water is no limit to Geralt, in that sense, right?
19:27We have Roach, of course, the horse.
19:29Or you can just engage on travel by foot.
19:32And if all that is too much for you,
19:35and if you want to make a level designer's heart bleed a bit,
19:37you just fast travel, right?
19:38It's all up to you how you want to spend time in the game.
19:42I'll show you I won't be doing that.
19:45I hope, I hope.
19:47Good your ear.
19:49So, what will it be?
19:51Will you help Albert Nidus find a black pearl for his wife?
19:54I'd like it done already.
19:56Humidities unkind to my bones.
19:58They've started creaking.
20:01Let's go.
20:02Let's go.
20:03But get ready for the creaks in the war.
20:04I mean, I've come this far.
20:05You can find pearls where it's dry.
20:08True.
20:09But I survived worse during the war.
20:13At Rosrock, we fought laced deep in the swamp and...
20:16Ah, laced my breath.
20:18History don't mean no wit to youngsters.
20:21Come on.
20:22Pearl grounds aren't far now.
20:24Okay.
20:25Did you just call us a youngster?
20:27Yeah.
20:29Well...
20:29I guess everything's relative, yeah.
20:32Something worth pointing out is actually the way this guy deals with or treats Geralt, right?
20:37It's not necessarily given in this world that Geralt gets treated nicely
20:41and with the sort of level of respect that this guy is treating us with
20:44because witchers in this world are mostly actually feared
20:47because they are superhuman, right?
20:49They're not really considered as human
20:51and people are oftentimes actually afraid of them.
20:55Hmm.
20:56This is the place.
20:57They say dive down here and you'll see the oyster beds all around.
21:00The problem is, not all hold the pearls.
21:04And the black ones are real rarity.
21:06But search long enough and you're sure to find one.
21:08You're telling me now?
21:09So how am I supposed to do the dining?
21:12Well, you see, I've been in the infantry all my life, sir.
21:16I'm not one for water.
21:17And my lungs ain't what they used to be, so...
21:22Probably not the best deal Geralt has done this one.
21:24That's always right.
21:27But hey, at least it will pay eventually.
21:29It will take his work, exactly.
21:32So here we go in the water.
21:37And yeah, again, I find the swimming as well incredibly impressive with the water physics.
21:41The water does look very, very cool.
21:43And that's yet another way you can traverse the world, right?
21:45Swimming and diving.
21:48So as you're about to get, hopefully, a black pearl, any advice for Kaveh Maus?
21:55Don't stay too long underwater.
21:57You don't seem to have the appropriate potion for it.
22:00Ah, yeah, true.
22:01Which is something that you can actually do.
22:02You know, you can craft potions, of course, to enhance your monster slaying abilities.
22:07But also, there is a potion, for example, that enhances your ability to breathe underwater.
22:12And crafting that might be useful if you plan on going for a bit of an extended swim or dive,
22:17right?
22:17Oh, wow, I think we've got a visitor here, Kaveh.
22:20Yes, there are some sirens that are making everything more difficult.
22:23Oh my gosh.
22:25And I think in order to not lose all my breath, I will need to go back up.
22:31Yeah, maybe if you try the crossbow, you might be able to hit it.
22:35Ah, true that.
22:36But I think breath will be my priority here.
22:38That's breath breath!
22:41Made it.
22:42Nice.
22:43Alright, let's go for one more dive.
22:45Yeah.
22:46Where are you, Siren?
22:47You can actually lock onto the target if you press one of the analog sticks.
22:53There you are.
22:57Hey!
22:58I got it!
22:59Nice!
23:00Nice.
23:01Lucky shot there.
23:03But it's the one that counts.
23:07Alright.
23:09Where are you, Black Pal?
23:11Where are you, Black Pal?
23:13So yeah, here I'm also using the Witcher senses to highlight the different elements you can interact with.
23:20That one.
23:23This one.
23:23Not black.
23:25Another one here.
23:26Come on!
23:28Not black!
23:30And grab some air!
23:30Grab some air!
23:31Go, go, go!
23:33Alright.
23:34That would be a tragic end for Geralt of Rivia if we just drowned hunting for some pearls.
23:40There we go.
23:41Nice.
23:41Alright.
23:42I think I will leave it at that anyway.
23:45Because we don't want to spoil the rest of the quest also for the viewers that are watching.
23:49Just gonna swim back to the shore.
23:52Why not?
23:54Alright.
23:55As Kaveh swims back to the shore.
23:57Miles, are there any closing remarks you'd like to leave for the viewers who are watching at home?
24:02Yes.
24:02Actually, two things.
24:03So, you've seen that Geralt is a pretty well-established character in this world.
24:07Some people know him, right?
24:08They know witches in general.
24:10And this is of course because there's been a couple of games before this and Geralt is an established character.
24:17However, I don't want this to be a deterrent for people who haven't played the previous games.
24:21Really, we made this game with all these new players in mind.
24:25And it's something that you can jump right into and enjoy much without even any previous knowledge of the games.
24:33However, if you have played the previous games, you'll find little easter eggs and hints and wings to previous characters.
24:39But really, we made it so that you'll be able to find your way around and not feel out of
24:44place simply diving in without any prior knowledge.
24:47The second thing is that, again, what we're launching here soon is our complete edition of Witcher 3.
24:55Which means that it features all of the content that we've ever released for Witcher 3 on one cartridge.
25:01For this, we actually opted to go for the 32 gigabyte cartridge.
25:05So players have the full experience once they plug it into their Switch and are ready to go and explore
25:11this huge open world.
25:14I'm sold. Like, I cannot wait for this game to come out.
25:17From what I've seen so far, which is a snippet of how huge this game is, it looks incredible and
25:24the aesthetic of it is beautiful.
25:26So thank you so much, Miles, for joining us today. And Kaveh, thank you so much for your gameplay.
25:32Now, I believe you do have a special announcement for us for the release date of this title.
25:37Yes, I wasn't kidding when I was saying soon, because it's actually very soon.
25:41And The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Complete Edition launches on Nintendo Switch on October 15th this year.
25:48Wow, that's not very far at all.
25:50It's very soon indeed.
25:51Very soon indeed.
25:52So once again, thank you so much, Miles, for joining us.
25:55Kaveh, thank you so much for your gameplay.
25:57My pleasure.
25:58And for everybody watching at home, this was The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Complete Edition.
26:03Thank you so much for watching and we'll see you all very soon.
26:06See ya.
26:07Bye.
