00:08I think we started to realize that the measure of a soldier is how they handle loss, and Market Garden
00:13was all about the loss of many different things.
00:18If you've ever seen the film Titanic, most people knew before going into the theater that the boat was going
00:23to sink.
00:24Yes, the boat sank, and we wanted to see it sink because we wanted to see the special effects, but
00:27the movie was not about the boat sinking.
00:29The movie was about this drama between these characters and how they dealt with this situation and each other.
00:35By focusing on the soldiers in our game instead of the war in general, we give our game a more
00:41of an emotional slant, making them real people.
00:45For me, what always makes people interesting is finding what's beneath the surface, who they were, the pieces of who
00:51they are, kind of coming together into the soldier.
00:54And then from there, they actually become great characters again.
00:57You can have the most emotional scene in the world between two characters, but if the player himself is not
01:01involved in some way, then, I mean, you fail.
01:07Sergeant Baker has three teams at his disposal.
01:09He's got the assault team, which is led by Corporal Sam Corian.
01:12He's got his base of fire team, which is led by Tom Zanovich.
01:14And he's got his special team, which is MG or Bazooka, led by Private Gary Jasper.
01:18In the rules of the Brothers in Arms universe, we've drawn this line.
01:22And so everyone in the game, rank of lieutenant and higher, is an actual historical figure.
01:29And everyone ranks sergeant and lower is based on an actual guy in an actual unit, but we've changed the
01:35name and we've created our own personality and our own details there.
01:38You play as Sergeant Matt Baker, and you lead a reconnaissance platoon of the 101st Airborne, the Screaming Eagles.
01:46And your job is to keep your squad alive and accomplish the mission.
01:50In many cases, the mission and the men are going to cause you a dilemma.
01:55You will decide whether your men live or die.
01:58You can make the best decisions imaginable, do the best job, have the best guy who's the best soldier, and
02:03he's still the one who happens to get hit.
02:05Man, that's very sobering.
02:10We just killed the Krauts that came off this elevator.
02:13Which means they're probably waiting at the top.
02:15I know.
02:16Oh God, we're really stupid.
02:18I know!
02:19Who is Sergeant Baker?
02:20You know, when he went into Normandy, he was green.
02:23It was his first combat experience ever, and he had just been promoted to squad leader.
02:26In fact, that was his first line in the first game.
02:29I never asked to be squad leader, but I had no choice.
02:31He is the leader, even though he's got all this weight on his shoulders.
02:35You know, he doesn't want to obviously show that to anybody.
02:38You know, he's got people to keep alive.
02:40Guys who he's trusting with his life, he's not necessarily trusting with his emotions.
02:45And he's really never been prepared for that responsibility.
02:48Now that guilt is really taking a toll.
02:51Frankie!
02:58Baker is losing it.
02:59You know, we've called it shell shock and post-traumatic stress disorder.
03:02He's certainly experiencing the pressure.
03:03We're seeing him start to buckle.
03:05So you get to see kind of his descent into kind of this war madness kind of thing.
03:10How many men is one officer worth?
03:13It's literally poised in the game.
03:1510, 20, 30.
03:16I mean, it has no answer.
03:18Who's the right man to take command of second squad?
03:23Corporal Sankorian has become Baker's right-hand man.
03:26He's watched both of his buddies, you know, become squad leaders.
03:29And they're, you know, above him, but they also really listen to him and they really, you know, respect him
03:34as an equal.
03:34You follow orders or you die.
03:37Tell me one order I haven't followed to the letter.
03:39It's not about that.
03:40We really try to tackle that emotional complexity.
03:44When I give you an order, you follow.
03:47I'm not a particular fan of Corian, but I like him as a character because he creates complications for Baker
03:54and the other guys.
03:55It's obvious that he wants to become more than just a corporal.
03:57He's a good soldier.
03:58He really is.
03:59He's a great soldier.
04:00He's a great team leader, but he and Baker don't always see eye to eye.
04:03He asks the questions that need to be asked of a leader.
04:06How do you measure your life versus mine?
04:09What the hell is going on in here?
04:11Well, Paddock said some stuff that made him sound like a real thing.
04:14I see one goddamn bruise on any of you.
04:16It'll be KP and latrines for a week.
04:19Heartsock has seen just as much shit as Baker has.
04:22We're the tip of the spear, Jazz.
04:25We need to look sharp when we go in.
04:27I have to say I like his character better than Baker.
04:29That is kind of the military mindset.
04:31It's like, yeah, shit happens.
04:32This shit is, you know, foobar.
04:34But you've got to go through it.
04:36I like Jasper, and I like his bazooka named Stella.
04:41Jazz!
04:42Let's give him all we got!
04:45He decides to kind of treat this bazooka like his girlfriend.
04:54You know, one of the things that's interesting about storytelling and video games is, frankly,
04:58I think the entire industry is in the Stone Age.
05:01So much difficulty just in getting to the point where the character will tell you what you're expected to do.
05:07The idea to, like, create a deep character, very few games get anywhere near there.
05:12The social storyline between you and your men is really the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
05:17All of us wonder, what would I do in that situation?
05:21If I was faced with this horrible situation, how would I react?
05:27And there's something to learn about us from knowing what we're like under those tests.
05:32The stakes are no higher than they are in war.
05:37But then, since I got all the same, what we'd like, why would I ever take care of them?
05:52Remember that?
