01:12Of course, there's some leeway there.
01:14We've got to make it fun for the player.
01:15So this time around, we made a lot more freeform.
01:17We added a lot more shooter elements to it.
01:20In the past, we put such a strong emphasis on squad combat
01:25that we took a lot of control away from the player.
01:27Set up the M.G. over there!
01:29We realized along the way that ultimately what we needed to do
01:32was not neuter the player's ability to be powerful,
01:34but to make his squads even more powerful,
01:36to make them more relevant.
01:39Tell my squad to suppress the enemy or kill the enemy.
01:41In fact, if I get really good at the game
01:43and I choose to play it this way,
01:44I can beat the game without ever firing a shot.
01:47Now the player's viewing his squad as more of a weapon
01:50rather than a squad.
02:01Destructible cover has made a huge difference
02:03just in the wow factor and keeping the game new.
02:05just totally blow away a chunk of wall
02:08and people were just so excited every time they see that.
02:10It's really awesome to see people's reaction to that.
02:13Introduces a bit more of an element of time.
02:15You're behind a wall and that wall may not be there for very long.
02:18You have to use tactics, but you have to use those tactics quickly
02:21or you're not going to be around much longer.
02:23It's pretty technical to make something blow up
02:25and make it look realistic.
02:27But then when you see it in the game
02:28and you see it blow up, you're like,
02:30that's awesome.
02:32Along with the destructible cover system,
02:34we have a gore system,
02:36which is pretty brutal, actually.
02:41We have a really awesome gore system.
02:44You can tear out limbs and arms.
02:49Part of our push for authenticity
02:51was that we didn't want to pull any punches
02:53as far as the effects of these.
02:56When a bullet hits a target,
02:58when a grenade goes off next to a target,
03:00we want to show what these things do.
03:04We get into what we call an action camera sequence.
03:07The camera goes in really close.
03:08I'm right on the guy.
03:09So as he's flying through the air and getting blown up,
03:11I see an arm get torn off
03:14and a piece of his leg is like flying at the camera
03:16in glorious slow motion.
03:26When you see real soldiers in real situations,
03:28a lot of time they're in a relaxed
03:29or more of a patrol stance.
03:31You can't always be perfectly ready.
03:33Guns are heavy.
03:34You can't always hold them up to your eyeball all the time.
03:36Soldiers are not always in combat.
03:37They're not always yelling.
03:38If he's in patrol, he's talking,
03:40and there's color dialogue to go along with that.
03:41I don't think you're going to kill him with words.
03:43Coming out of the cinematic,
03:44the player and his squad are in this patrol stance.
03:47Then you'll suddenly see them all hunker down,
03:49and they'll get really quiet.
03:52They start getting low.
03:53They start whispering.
03:54This spot doesn't look too safe.
03:55You notice Baker's voice changes.
03:57When he gives commands, he's whispering.
03:59Germans ahead.
04:00Don't think they saw us.
04:01This lets the player know that he's in stealth
04:03and that the Germans can't quite see him,
04:05but he can't get too close.
04:07Wait, you can be inside!
04:13As soon as combat starts,
04:15we'll shift into a combat posture,
04:16and everybody will be screaming,
04:18and everybody's up, and the gun's out,
04:19and we're firing.
04:20Space and fire!
04:21Come on, NG!
04:23Firing!
04:25You get a great amount of feedback
04:27about your surroundings,
04:28and about the combat,
04:29and about the way the battle's about to unfold
04:31by just looking at your men.
04:32This isn't safe, Frankie.
04:34Don't lighten up, Corian.
04:38There's also armor.
04:40There are artillery pieces like, you know,
04:42the German side, the dreaded 88.
04:47You know, 37-millimeter cannons
04:48and all kinds of artillery pieces,
04:50and then there's also tanks.
04:55You can button up.
04:56That means you're going to get inside of your hatch
04:58and just use your main gun and your turret
05:00and take guys out.
05:01Or you can even climb up and get on top of the cannon.
05:03You have a better view up there,
05:04and, you know, you can use the machine gun
05:06and just grind guys out.
05:08There's a lot of ways you can use a tank
05:10to cause havoc on the enemy.
05:11To me, the tanks are like,
05:13that's the dessert.
05:14Ha-ha!
05:34I'll pop it down again.
05:35we're going to not be doing the,
05:35the podr in football.
05:35I'll finish the fucking scales off.
