00:30The movie was not about the boat sinking. The movie was about this drama between these characters and how they
00:35dealt with this situation and each other.
00:37By focusing on the soldiers in our game instead of the war in general, we give our game a more
00:43of an emotional slant, making them real people.
00:47For me, what always makes people interesting is finding what's beneath the surface, who they were, the pieces of who
00:53they are, kind of coming together into the soldier.
00:56And then from there, they actually become great characters. You can have the most emotional scene in the world between
01:01two characters, but if the player himself is not involved in some way, then, I mean, you fail.
01:09Sergeant Baker has three teams at his disposal. He's got the assault team, which is led by Corporal Sam Corian.
01:14He's got his base of fire team, which is led by Tom Zanovich.
01:16And he's got his special team, which is MG or Bazooka, led by Private Gary Jasper.
01:20In the rules of the Brothers in Arms universe, we've drawn this line. And so everyone in the game, rank
01:27of lieutenant and higher, is an actual historical figure.
01:30And everyone ranked sergeant and lower is based on an actual guy in an actual unit, but we've changed the
01:37name and we've created our own personality and our own details there.
01:40You play as Sergeant Matt Baker, and you lead a reconnaissance platoon of the 101st Airborne, the Screaming Eagles.
01:48And your job is to keep your squad alive and accomplish the mission.
01:52In many cases, the mission and the men are going to cause you a dilemma. You will decide whether your
01:59men live or die.
02:00You can make the best decisions imaginable, do the best job, have the best guy who's the best soldier, and
02:05he's still the one who happens to get hit.
02:07Man, that's very sobering.
02:12We just killed the Krauts that came off this elevator.
02:15Which means they're probably waiting at the top.
02:17I know.
02:18Oh, God. We're really stupid.
02:20I know!
02:21Who is Sergeant Baker? You know, when he went into Normandy, he was green. It was his first combat experience
02:26ever, and he had just been promoted to squad leader.
02:28In fact, that was his first line in the first game. I never asked to be squad leader, but I
02:32had no choice.
02:33He is the leader, even though he's got all this weight on his shoulders.
02:37You know, he doesn't want to obviously show that to anybody. You know, he's got people to keep alive.
02:42Guys who he's trusting with his life, he's not necessarily trusting with his emotions.
02:47And he's really never been prepared for that responsibility. Now that guilt is really taking its toll.
02:53Frankie!
02:59Baker is losing it.
03:01You know, we've called it shell shock and post-traumatic stress disorder. He's certainly experiencing the pressure.
03:05We're seeing him start to buckle.
03:07So you get to see kind of his descent into kind of this war madness kind of thing.
03:12How many men is one officer worth? It's literally poised in the game. 10, 20, 30. I mean, it has
03:19no answer.
03:20Who's the right man to take command of second squad?
03:25Corporal Sankorian has become Baker's right-hand man.
03:28He's watched both of his buddies, you know, become squad leaders.
03:31And they're, you know, above him, but they also really listen to him and they really, you know, respect him
03:36as an equal.
03:36You follow orders or you die.
03:39Tell me one order I haven't followed to the letter. It's not about that.
03:42We really try to tackle that emotional complexity.
03:46When I give you an order, you follow.
03:49I'm not a particular fan of Corian, but I like him as a character because he creates complications for Baker
03:56and the other guys.
03:57It's obvious that he wants to become more than just a corporal.
03:59He's a good soldier. He really is. He's a great soldier. He's a great team leader, but he and Baker
04:03don't always see eye to eye.
04:05He asks the questions that need to be asked of a leader.
04:08How do you measure your life versus mine?
04:11What the hell is going on in here?
04:13Well, Paddock said some stuff that made him sound like a real dick.
04:16I see one goddamn bruise on any of you.
04:18It'll be KP and latrines for a week.
04:20Heartsock has seen just as much shit as Baker has.
04:24We're the tip of the spear, Jazz.
04:27We need to look sharp when we go in.
04:29I have to say I like his character better than Baker.
04:31That is kind of the military mindset.
04:33It's like, yeah, shit happens.
04:34This shit is, you know, foobar.
04:36But you've got to go through it.
04:38Jazz-a! I'm Zebra!
04:39I like Jasper, and I like his bazooka named Stella.
04:43Jazz! Let's give him all we got!
04:47He decides to kind of treat this bazooka like his girlfriend.
04:56You know, one of the things that's interesting about storytelling and video games
04:59is, frankly, I think the entire industry is in the Stone Age.
05:03So much difficulty just in getting to the point
05:05where the character will tell you what you're expected to do.
05:09The idea to, like, create a deep character,
05:11very few games get anywhere near there.
05:14The social storyline between you and your men
05:16is really the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
05:19All of us wonder, what would I do in that situation?
05:23If I was faced with this horrible situation, how would I react?
05:29And there's something to learn about us
05:31from knowing what we're like under those tests.
05:34The stakes are no higher than they are in war.
05:44So let's see what we did in that situation.
05:45Oh God, don't get it!
05:51If you guys are playing dobry comedy in each other,
05:52Let's do not know.
05:52The sun is now!
05:52The sun is now!
05:52H papy!
05:52Have breathed?
05:52The sun is now!
