00:00I
00:30Hi, I'm Bob Keeshan, and welcome to CBS Story Break.
00:33Usually, all is quiet for the possum family who live in the swamp.
00:37But that was before somebody gave little Miles a saxophone.
00:42Now Mama says that saxophone has got to go.
00:45So Miles decides to go right along with it.
00:48But on the road to fame and fortune, Miles runs into some dangerous detours.
00:53Based on Thatcher Hurd's book, here is Mama Don't Allow.
01:18Miles! Miles Possum!
01:21You come in here and visit with your Uncle Waylon before he leaves.
01:26Miles, do you hear me?
01:30What is wrong with that boy?
01:33That's what we've been wondering.
01:35He doesn't know what he wants to do with his life.
01:38We're trying to raise him the best we could.
01:41Don't worry, Mama, because you've done good.
01:43You never know what a boy is gonna be.
01:47He's a nameless possum.
01:49Like a fly that just won't blossom.
01:51And he takes after your own side of the family.
01:54New York!
01:55New York!
01:55New York!
01:56I'm an aimless possum.
01:58And my apprehensions are awesome.
02:00And I really do not know what I want to be.
02:05Miles, didn't you hear me say,
02:08Uncle Waylon has brought you a present?
02:11A present?
02:14Maybe this will give you a notion of where your talents lie.
02:17Wow, look at this!
02:19A saxophone!
02:24Gee, Waylon, thanks.
02:29Yeah, thanks, Uncle Waylon.
02:31I'm gonna practice every day.
02:34Every day?
02:35Oh, wonderful.
02:50I never liked your brother, Waylon.
02:54My brother?
02:55I thought it was your brother.
03:24What did we ever do to the zoo?
03:28What did you say?
03:43Miles, that does it!
03:48If that big horn you have to play,
03:51we wish you'd do it far away.
03:53Your ma and I are both in pain.
03:55To play that way is inhumane.
03:58We cannot take this awful sound.
04:01Can't stand to have that horn around.
04:03We love you, son,
04:04but you must know your saxophone has got to go.
04:10Ooh.
04:18Mama don't allow no music playin' round here.
04:21Uh-uh.
04:22My mama don't allow no music playin' round here.
04:26No way.
04:27Now, I don't care what mama don't allow.
04:29I'm gonna play my music anyhow.
04:31Mama don't allow no music playin' round here.
04:44I'm gonna play my music.
04:50Oh, oh, oh, oh.
05:38Ha-ha! No bear's gonna get the best of...
06:03So the morrow is when you're all alone, and you're in the woods, bring a sacks of boat.
06:07Mama don't allow no grizzlies scaring out here.
06:11Mama don't allow no grizzlies scaring out here.
06:19Well, I don't care what Mama don't allow, gonna scare up all grizzlies anyhow.
06:24Mama don't allow no grizzlies scaring out here.
06:38Mama don't allow no grizzlies scaring out here.
06:55Hey! You're too close to my store!
06:58Well, how far away should it be?
07:00I hear Australia be nice this time, oh yeah?
07:03Oh, I get the message.
07:10Oh, this music is making you grow so well, my children.
07:19Oh, my goodness.
07:24Now, boy, you stop there.
07:34Hey, Sheriff!
07:35That man's cruel and unusual punishment.
07:38Well, it's a free country. Folks got a right to play music if they please.
07:43Except that kind.
07:47Son, either you cease and desist that there alleged music, or I'll run you in on a 601.
07:53A 601? What's a 601?
07:56Yeah, a 601, a 601, a 601, oh yeah, here it is.
07:59There you go, a 601.
08:01Playing an unlistened saxophone or any musical instrument so as to annoy the Sheriff.
08:10That was awful. That sounded like a moose getting his tonsils out.
08:15Almost as bad as your cooking.
08:17Now, now, you boys stop complaining or I'll arrest that saxophone player and put him in the same cell as
08:22you.
08:22Oh, mercy, Sheriff! Don't do it! Don't do it, boss!
08:25Come on, Dad!
08:26I don't get it.
08:28All my life, people say to me,
08:30Miles, what do you want to be when you grow up?
08:33What do you want to do?
08:34Well, I found something and now no one wants me to do it.
08:40Hmm, so long, saxophone.
09:06Yikes!
09:08Say, that's a mighty fine sax you got there, fella.
09:11Wow, you're a great drummer.
09:13I bet folks like it when you play.
09:16See, you're not actively serious, kiddo.
09:19You buy a drum and all your neighbors put their homes up for sale.
09:23Boy, I know just how you feel.
09:26No one likes my saxophone.
09:28I was gonna throw it in the river.
09:30Don't do that, Jack.
09:31My name's Miles.
09:34When you're playing your saxophone,
09:37there's a reason the crowds are hissing.
09:40Cause if you're playing all alone,
09:42then the most crucial part is missing.
09:45All I need is a guy with a drum?
09:48That's the answer to it, my chum.
09:50Get a band and before you know,
09:53I'll be the star of a video with a saxophone!
09:58A drum!
10:08Hey, we got a great sound, man.
10:11But something is missing.
10:13I know I'm a lousy player.
10:15I mean, besides that.
10:17Hey, give a listen to that library.
10:25And stay out!
10:29And stay out!
10:31Well, some folks just don't like good music, you know.
10:33I knows the feeling.
10:35I knows the feeling.
10:37Now, that's what this band needs, Clyde.
10:40My name is Miles.
10:41You really think we need a guitar?
10:43Are you kidding?
10:46Well, just a sax and a drum are fine.
10:48They give you notes and a sense of rhythm.
10:51But a combo's really shiny.
10:54When a guitar's playing with em.
10:56If we all wanna reach for a star.
10:59What we need is to get a guitar.
11:02Then a band is gonna go far.
11:04Got my sax and I got my drum.
11:06Got a guitar that I can strong.
11:28What are we doing here?
11:30Leave it to me, Roger.
11:32Miles.
11:32Right.
11:33Our combo needs just one more thing.
11:36And here he comes now.
11:38Give a listen.
11:40Give a listen.
11:51Now that.
11:53That's gonna prove a horn for you.
11:54If you get out of here alive.
11:57Come on, Miles.
11:58Miles.
12:03Hey, you got some lip there, pal.
12:07Oh, thanks.
12:08I just gotta express myself.
12:10How about expressing yourself with our band?
12:13Well, it's not like you don't need me.
12:16If your group hasn't got some brass.
12:18Then you might just as well go dump it.
12:21Any band can have real class.
12:24With the sound of a mighty trumpet.
12:26If our trio is sounding forlorn.
12:29All we need is the cat and the horn.
12:32Got our band and we're here to play.
12:34Now they won't tell us to go away.
12:36Cause we are a band.
12:40Today.
12:45That four piece player's a real winner.
12:48The bigger I find, four course dinner.
12:51The drummer will be our hors d'oeuvre.
12:53And for the main course, we will serve.
12:56The guitar player, Lally Ride.
12:58The trumpet player on the side.
13:01And guys, let's save that little squirt.
13:03The sax player is for dessert.
13:17Do you think I got what it takes?
13:19You just never know till you get in front of an audience.
13:22Oh.
13:36Well looky.
13:39We got ourselves a real band.
13:45Charge!
13:49Come on Jackson.
13:51Come on.
14:07Now, was that all really necessary?
14:11What are we going to do?
14:13Only thing musicians know how to do.
14:15Play!
14:16Maybe somebody will hear us and save us.
14:35Hey, you fellas don't think we want to hurt you, do you?
14:43Us think that?
14:44Of course not.
14:46We were so hoping that we could engage a little orchestra here to play at a special gator gathering tonight.
14:55You mean we get to live and play a gig?
14:58And we'd really love after you performed to have the four of you for dinner.
15:06Quiet, Duford. What do you say?
15:09You got yourself a band. We gonna be real hot for you.
15:13Just medium rare will do fine.
15:18But I've never played in front of an audience before.
15:20Relax. You don't get nervous if you know you're good.
15:25That's easy for you to say.
15:34Welcome to the Swamp Queen. I am your Gator Waker.
15:38And for tonight's entertainment, four wonderful musicians.
15:41And for tonight's menu, four wonderful musicians.
15:47I'm the Bob's.
15:48There.
15:50There.
15:59There.
16:00There.
16:02There.
16:04There.
16:07There.
16:09There, there.
16:12A beautiful rose.
16:13There.
16:14There.
16:15There.
16:16In a good place.
16:24Thank you, thank you.
16:26Oh, you're a cold-blooded group tonight.
16:29And we got a treat for you.
16:33I can't go out there.
16:34What if they don't like our music?
16:36Nobody ever has.
16:38Listen, Grover, you want to be a musician?
16:41You want to be in a band?
16:43Of course, but...
16:45But nothing.
16:47If you want to be in a band, you've got to play along.
16:50You've got to make a little noise.
16:53So now, ladies and gents, gators and crocs,
16:57put your claws together
16:59and welcome tonight's main course,
17:01I mean, main attraction,
17:05Miles Possum and his Swing and Swat Reviews.
17:23Hit it, guys.
17:40I think we're about to receive a chewing ovation,
17:44unless we play something real hot.
17:46But I don't know any hot sounds.
17:49Think, Elroy.
17:50Did you learn any at home?
17:53Mama wouldn't let me play my sax at home.
17:55Hey, that's it!
18:11Oh, well, now, Mama don't allow no music playin' round here.
18:15Mama don't allow no music playin' round here.
18:19Well, we don't care, Mama don't allow no guitar workin' round here.
18:34Well, Mama don't allow no guitar workin' round here.
18:40Well, well, now, Mama Lola, no gator dancing around here
18:44Mama Lola, no gator dancing around here
18:48Well, we don't care why Mama Lola gonna play for gators, anyhow
18:51Mama Lola, no gator dancing around here
18:54Well, well, now, Mama Lola, no, around here
18:59Mama Lola, around here
19:02Now, we don't care why Mama Lola gonna, anyhow
19:06Mama Lola, no, around here
19:34I don't think we ought to stay around here.
20:06Hey, guys, they're getting tired.
20:08Lullabot version.
20:36Lullabot version.
21:06Lullabot version.
21:31Lullabot version.
22:01Lullabot version.
22:03Hi, Mom. Hi, Pop. Guess what? I was in a real live band, and when I grow up, I'm going
22:10to be a musician. I'm going to practice every day until I'm good enough.
22:22Harlow, Miles finally has a goal in life.
22:27Yep. Maybe my son's going to turn out all right after all.
22:32Oh, good night, Esther.
22:36Oh, not Harlow.
