00:00um well also in terms of the calendar the nfl draft is one month from tonight
00:07april 23rd a lot of buzz today on my twitter at least sal about the receiver we've talked about
00:13born in rochester casey concepcion texas a&m and i just keep everything i see maybe it's you know
00:20you follow a certain smallish number of people and if they're all like-minded so be it but it's
00:26still always very positive on him like the the metrics are good and matt harman's got charts
00:33about how he can get open and do all this i wonder if he even makes it to the bills
00:37but if he does
00:38what then as we've talked about a lot whether or not they you could still see the bills go wide
00:43receiver in the first round after trading for dj more what's your latest on that i still think it's
00:50really possible um and here's a big reason why i think today is a kind of highlights this look what
00:54jackson smith and jigba got today right i mean like you can't just try to keep grabbing these
01:00receivers that are already on pro rosters and paying them these monster contracts if you can
01:06get a guy and you can have him receiver is it's i know it's not the exact same but receivers
01:11kind of
01:12become like the quarterback on a rookie contract right like it is 40 million a year for jackson smith
01:19and jigba right i mean and then you got to multiply that that is one guy at a position where
01:24you
01:24generally dress five guys in a game and the other guys aren't you know always making peanuts it's not
01:29going to be like that you might have a guy making 10 million a year another making 6 million a
01:32year
01:32i mean you're you're throwing so much money at that room now well how do you keep the cost down
01:38you get a guy under cost control that you draft and that you have for four years and then you
01:42make
01:43a decision and if you want to you know pay him and yeah great if he's that good if he
01:47becomes jsn
01:48you pay him right that's what you do you live with it totally cool totally fine so i think that
01:53you
01:53you have to it's not just the position and where he fits i think it's the economic model of the
01:59league
02:00right now on how you have to absolutely consider that right and they're doing this second contract
02:06for him that's after only three years right as soon as they could do it they did it with him
02:10and that's
02:10you know that's one way to do it you know you could try to extend the shelf life of that
02:14rookie deal
02:15but you know if the guy is you know obviously playing way beyond what you've got him signed for
02:21it's good business to take care of a guy that you want to build around so i get why they
02:26did it but
02:26yeah but even that gets shorter right like if the bills drafted this casey concepcion at 26 overall
02:33and he nails it he catches 80 balls as a rookie and year two is even better and you're you're
02:41looking
02:41at you're looking at that kind of something comparable to that as soon as you can which is year three
02:47so
02:47like the life cycle even is that short you know it's like josh allen the bills did not wait until
02:53they had to do josh allen's contract as soon as he was eligible to do a contract they like okay
03:01we i
03:01think we're all in the city we all agree this guy's great okay let's do it and just you know
03:05rather than
03:06you know play it out um so even that opportunity you have there with that rookie contract that shelf
03:12life is can only be three years it as of right now um where the bills pick at 26 according
03:20to over
03:20the cap data does a good job with this the cap figure for a wide receiver for anybody i'm sorry
03:27anybody drafted at 26 3.5 million i mean you think about that right if you can get a wide
03:33receiver and
03:33you hit on him and he's really good in year two and year two by the way his next cap
03:38hit for the bills
03:39picking there would be not much higher than that right you're going to go up you're going to go up
03:43a little bit each year i mean you can get a guy for four and a half million dollars it's
03:47unbelievable
03:47and then he can't negotiate and renegotiate for three years so you're right and i'll take my chances
03:51i gotta you know brandon bean the the one thing that's kind of come up over this this uh couple
03:57months
03:58here is brandon bean and joe brady have mentioned you know hey you're paying your quarterback a lot of
04:02money and it's harder to build a roster that way and there's been some pushback to that from fans
04:07from media saying no it's not that your quarterback's making a lot of money it's the guys in the
04:11bottom end that aren't contributing that you're paying too much to i totally respect that point i
04:15get it but it is real that you're paying josh allen amongst the best in the league and you're paying
04:20him
04:20that much money and you're going to have to find other ways to pay the rest of your roster when
04:25you're
04:25doing that i get it and we can make definite you know determinations and say well you shouldn't have
04:29paid curtis samuel you know six million dollars a year whatever it was nine million dollars a year i get
04:34that that's totally fine but it is real that when you're paying so much of your cap to one position
04:39and one player you have to figure out where you can find getting cheaper labor so to speak and i
04:45think
04:45this is the best way to do it if you can get a really good who are the highest priced
04:50players now
04:50it's the quarterback it's the edge rusher it's the left tackle and it's receiver now if you can get one
04:54of those four positions and that you hit on them in the draft you get a cost controlled player for
05:01three years at a great rate at a premium position i think this is the most and you're a smart
05:07guy so
05:07you led with this this i think is the most compelling argument to not rule out receiver at 26 that
05:14i
05:14think can be made because i mostly i think like a lot of us the bills make the dj more
05:19trade and i'm
05:20like okay i just can't see them using 26 on a receiver and i think push comes to shove i
05:25probably
05:25will still end up there but you gotta respect this point like bean could look at it like okay
05:33yeah sure i did add dj more but that's only you know what what are they really hoping to get
05:38out
05:38of that three years maybe right at the cost it's added maybe see if they can get out of it
05:42after that
05:43if not sooner i don't know right so you're gonna need someone else and the only way like you're saying
05:51to avoid having to pay double which is what you do you're paying premium assets and then the big
05:56contract for an established player at least if you draft a guy and he's not does he's not keon
06:01coleman for two years he he hits you're getting really that that's exactly what you need when you
06:08have a 50 million dollar quarterback as you need value at some of these other positions that are you
06:14know really really helping you um i think the bill's biggest problem sale is the middle class
06:20of their roster is too expensive and not like they maybe have too many guys that are pretty good
06:26and so therefore they're getting paid in the middle of their position group league average wise but
06:31that's not they're not moving the meter for you but they're costing you you know and cumulatively it
06:37just reduces you know how effective you're going to be that's right and i'm glad you guys brought up
06:43keon coleman so like you take example he's not costing a ton of money right now in the cap this
06:48year
06:48he's 2.7 million dollars and they're very very livable but if he's not helping you whatsoever
06:53i mean that just gets added onto the pile of you know the extension you gave khalil shakir
06:57you still have joshua palmer that you signed last year and these things start to add up and these guys
07:02got to play for you they're not going to be you know if he's going to be inactive that's a
07:05totally
07:06different you know you know argument and set of circumstances that's not good by the way that you
07:10have to account for but this is a position where you're going to have to employ
07:14five six guys on the roster maybe seven they did at that times last year and those things start to
07:19add up so that's a guy where i wonder this is chicken and egg for me like i still wonder
07:27if
07:27he's on the roster okay keon coleman and i i don't know if the bills have an opportunity to move
07:32him
07:32i still think they highly consider it that's just my way of looking at it just how all this has
07:36played
07:37out but his status might also be determined by what happens on april 23rd and 24th and 25th which
07:45is if they were to go out and draft a casey conception i'd be like okay you can move on
07:49from keon coleman now like that that's just go do it because what what is he doing for you right
07:53now
07:53i don't think he's doing anything if you don't bring in another receiver where you think he's going
07:58to be at the top half of your depth chart then you're kind of relying on keon coleman a little
08:02bit
08:02to do that and that's that's a dangerous game right now to play all right you're talking me
08:07somewhat into being more open to the idea of a receiver in round one and this particular player
08:13you'll find you know this is not really surprising or or meaningful but you'll find
08:18mock drafts where he doesn't go by pick 26 and others where he does so i think he'll be maybe
08:25the
08:25receiver to watch other guys are interesting too like maybe omar cooper players that
08:31boston right denzel boston who might have um the talent to be drafted as high as pick 26
08:39with sal capaccio mike shope and the bulldog here so jsn i was going to ask you about that
08:45separately but we already did it 42.15 million for that player i guess you know we everybody's going
08:52to applaud it right you guys have already discussed it i mean just to have that season on a super
08:57bowl
08:57winner yeah nobody's going to mind if you're spending money on you know a player that just did
09:03that for you right no but and here's the other part about it like those numbers always get inflated
09:09but even the guaranteed number is 30 million a year like he's getting 120 guaranteed over four years
09:15and that is legit right like oh my god like he is he's getting paid and yeah he's awesome
09:20so great i don't think anyone's going to complain flags fly forever he helped you get a flag this year
09:25right championship banner that's great so yeah i mean i don't think anybody has any quorums with you
09:31know that happening they also what are they paying sam donald i mean that's part of the reason they can
09:35do it right they're not playing they're not paying their top end guys like your quarterback the kind
09:40of money that you know other teams are and you can afford to do that in that window so this
09:44is the
09:45economics of how you have to kind of go about roster building it's it's not it's not the same for
09:50everyone it's not a it's not a zero-sum game for everybody so yeah i i think he's a fantastic
09:54player um you know when he was drafted he was a guy that we talked about for the bills
10:00and it'd be great to have a guy like that on your team and you draft him and he becomes
10:03what he
10:03becomes no one can predict that though right i mean like who knows i'm sure there are people out
10:08there going i knew that guy would be great i'm sure well there's other guys that were taken before
10:12a little after whatever that you know bust out of the league was a garrett wilson who played with
10:17him at ohio state and said this guy is going to be better than all of us olave was on
10:21that team and
10:22wilson and then you know jsn had an injury in a preseason game as a rookie and just did not
10:29hit
10:30until really until last year he was fine but last year was the explosion do you feel i brought up
10:36the
10:36the mock draft point with conception in mind sal do you feel like you have a feel for the receiver
10:42flow
10:43in the draft yet i mean not that we're ever going to know for sure i mean you've had conversations
10:48and
10:48maybe listen to others or people talk about the the depth of the position people don't tend to say
10:53like it's a great year relative to the last few some of the last few at receiver do you think
10:58you
10:59have a sense of like how in demand these guys will be i i feel like from the people that
11:05i've
11:05listened to and kind of feel like they're plugged into what teams are thinking that this draft maybe
11:12more than a lot in the past really comes down to what your flavor is you know what i mean
11:17like if
11:17you want a certain guy you can get them but where do you want to get them right it's not
11:21like there
11:22there's not these slam dunk guys all over the place even carnell tate you know what is carnell
11:27tate even and yeah he might be the most the more consensus number one i guess by most people but
11:31it just seems to be and look at this guy casey conception he's not even six foot tall
11:35right i mean if you want if that's what you're looking for and you can you want a smaller guy
11:40who can play
11:41and return punts and all that that's your guy if you need a bigger guy like a denzel boston you
11:46can
11:46get a guy like that this draft seems to be very much about what flavor you want to put on
11:53your team
11:54yeah and then you've got like i think jordan tyson was the guy that i feel like i heard the
11:58most about
11:59during the season um but now that we're into draft season it's like there's a lot of concern about him
12:05being able to stay healthy right so like there's there's there's always i mean it's draft season
12:11there's gonna be questions and concerns about you know every guy there's hardly rarely is there a
12:16perfect bulletproof prospect i guess i mean it happens but i feel like if tyson didn't have injury
12:22questions he'd be the guy people would be talking about maybe even for the top five but he does sure
12:27and so does anybody else really measure up and that's where you get to the point you just made where
12:31it's like what flavor do you want right do you want the guy that plays above the rim do you
12:35want
12:35the technician like what are you looking for like for me at this point i mean i i felt this
12:40way about
12:41coleman too two years ago give me a guy that gets open what what's his best trade he gets open
12:48right in some way somehow he's going to get there and this conception today reads more like that than
12:55some of these other guys to me i agree i agree i think he fits i like him a lot
13:00obviously the rochester connection is cool that's not the reason why but i like him a lot i think
13:04also he the bills do have an opening at return man i mean that's a that's a spot they need
13:08to have
13:09somebody they don't really have a guy right now unless you're going to put a little shakir back
13:12there you could put i mean mccall hardman they have him he can do it no doubt but i mean
13:16is he making
13:16the team right i don't know are you putting if he does maybe that's the only thing he does casey
13:20conception can check off a couple of boxes for you and i just think that that matters right now um
13:25for what
13:26the bills are looking for and how they're trying to build their roster paying money around the roster
13:29you're going to pay a guy a little separately to be just a return man maybe you can have a
13:33guy in
13:33your roster who can do both it is sorry it is the only position on offense that i think we'd
13:39all
13:39agree that like they're not drafting offensive line um i know that they have you know a guard
13:45maybe competition i know they lost a swing tackle over the weekend which we can get to if you want
13:49but
13:49you know they're not drafting an offensive lineman they're not drafting a running back they're not
13:52drafting a tight end to me it's that that's the only spot on the offense and then like last year
13:58right around now as you guys know like going into the draft i was very confident they were taking
14:02defense like the first three picks like they're going defense first three picks i i think i think
14:07that seems right to me again this year as of right now still got a little time but i i
14:12i think wide
14:12receiver is still very much in the window within that group no when you laid it out the way you
14:17did
14:17you're reminding me of how i felt really before dj moore got here it was basically go do go do
14:24a thing
14:24go do a big thing right go get a guy whether that's a trade or just a signing you're gonna
14:30need
14:30a guy but i need another guy i need another you know a guy that that passes the test as
14:37being
14:37someone that could actually matter for them at receiver so that i'm not like you said it counting
14:44on coleman right if coleman flies right and you know improves his you know attention to detail and
14:51being a pro and all that stuff and can perform and earn his way onto the field over a guy
14:58you draft
14:59okay good for him hat tip but if i don't put that guy in place in front of him then
15:05i am de facto
15:06counting on coleman and i don't think i want to be there if me getting the if i get the
15:11right guy
15:12it falls just right and now i want to trade him that's a better route to me or he's got
15:16a battle to
15:17get over this guy because beyond the you know i'm just looking at the depth chart more palm or
15:23shakir and i'm into micole hardman and tyrell shavers who's coming back from an acl injury
15:29and coleman like that's it that's my receiving core nothing against steven gosno right but oh please
15:35of course you have something i need you you got to do more than that you just really do
15:39otherwise it looks like you are still sort of hedging you're actually you're expecting coleman to do
15:45something for you and i don't think this organization should be looking for him to do something
15:49for them if he does it great but man if you're counting on it man i think that's the wrong
15:55road
15:55i think can i jump in here and say this i think the optics on a potential coleman move are
16:01really
16:01interesting if i'm being i have a tough time doing it so i'm not getting anywhere close to what i
16:06paid
16:06to get him probably i mean it's a dump and for sure if i'm the other team i'm like wow
16:12they're so
16:13desperate to get him out of there on a team that's so thin at receiver that they're just going to
16:18give
16:18him to me that would that would be alarming um i think if i'm being i'd want to keep him
16:23and then
16:23maybe have the story written that you know just he was the problem or coaching just didn't ever get
16:30the most out of him more so than it was just a bad pick i hear you i do i
16:36understand all that i think
16:38you know to me he's always been maybe a piece of something else you want to do do you want
16:43to move
16:43around in the draft do you want to move up it doesn't have to be first round you want to
16:46recoup
16:47your second rounder maybe he's with something you do to be able to do that and then you can justify
16:52it a little bit more about what you're saying there mike because you're right another team might
16:56be like i don't know now look but we all know all it takes is one team to go look
16:59we really like
17:00that kid we had him in for a visit he'll be fine here like we think we got the right
17:04people in
17:04place the right coaches in place to be able to handle him like that's all it takes for one team
17:09and let's remember it did take an extra year i get it bean did that with kairi and he didn't
17:14play
17:14right he didn't play and then they tried it they tried it and it just didn't work and he eventually
17:18moved off of him and like okay well you know i'm gonna have to trade this guy keon coleman is
17:22to
17:22me the most interesting guy on the bills roster right now it really is because if you do play it
17:30out
17:30with him and you get through an offseason where you think he's kind of done everything right what
17:35did bean say do everything he'd write like the offseason last year and then things didn't go
17:39right if that happens again guys i'm telling you i don't think this organization has any desire
17:45whatsoever to be answering questions about why keon coleman is once again a healthy scratch
17:49every week i mean that just to me that creates a whole nother issue there yep that's interesting
17:55interesting
