00:08It's, it's Joel's mugshot whenever he went into prison.
00:15He's doing a smirk.
00:17That's, like, that's the smirk he would, he would give me a lot.
00:26I see you shaking.
00:28Yeah.
00:30I shake a lot, but, um, sometimes I can control it.
00:39Is it seeing this picture?
00:41Yeah.
00:42It's hard seeing the picture.
00:45And, like, it's hard, like, sensing the evil that he had in him.
00:51And, you know, it brings back a lot.
01:16Christy, come to the door!
01:17No!
01:18No!
01:19No!
01:21I can't get it!
01:23You don't want to try to go!
01:27We're here now.
01:28You're here, okay?
01:37I, um, I do remember it.
01:42Um...
01:44You actually hear me break the glass.
01:47And you, you hear me say, help me.
01:51And, um, I remember it very clear.
01:56We got you an ambulance on the way.
01:58We got someone on the way to you.
02:02Where did all this happen to me?
02:04Right here.
02:05Okay.
02:12I did know I was going to die.
02:14I knew I wasn't getting out of that cage.
02:17You know, I was just laying there, bleeding.
02:19There's blood all over the place.
02:22And, um, I didn't think I was going to make it out of there.
02:26I was so scared.
02:30I cheated death, you know?
02:32I cheated death, you know?
03:21I was so scared.
03:22It's Joel and I.
03:24And I look so happy.
03:26because at that moment, I was.
03:29You know, he was being nice to me.
03:31And it was nice when he was being nice.
03:36This right here is the jewel I loved.
03:41And I guess that's the jewel I didn't want to lose.
03:47Like, I didn't think, like, the things that happened in the future
03:52was going to happen to me.
03:53I really didn't think.
03:56Like, to be honest, like, I couldn't have imagined
04:00what was he capable of.
04:03I honestly didn't think he would do the things he did to me.
04:28I was about 16, 17, whenever I first saw Joel.
04:33He was my brother's friend.
04:36He would drive by on his motorcycle on a wheelie, and it caught my eye.
04:42I found him very attractive.
04:44He would make me laugh.
04:46Like, he caught my attention with that.
04:48Like, he would always make me laugh.
04:50There was an attraction there, but it was, like, I didn't entertain it.
04:57I didn't think about dating him until, like, years, years later.
05:19That's my baby.
05:21That's my son Christopher.
05:25He just got his final tap in this picture.
05:30My daddy passed away from cancer in 2013,
05:34and then nine months later, my son was diagnosed with leukemia,
05:38which is a blood cancer, and it was really hard.
05:48Yeah.
05:51You know, I didn't know if my son was going to make it.
05:56And, you know, I prayed.
05:58I prayed to God to save my son.
06:03I was at my lowest, and I was alone.
06:05I was scared.
06:07And that's when he kind of crawled his way in.
06:20Me and my son were in the hospital for one of his hospital stays.
06:25Joel ended up messaging me.
06:27He would just ask me how Chris was doing,
06:30and how am I doing, how am I handling it.
06:33I needed somebody to be there for me, and he was that person.
06:39You know, like, when we first started messaging,
06:42I was sitting on the couch looking out of the hospital window crying
06:49and, you know, looking at my son, and it was hard.
06:52And then I, you know, I hear a ding,
06:55and then I started, like, smiling at my phone.
07:00And he's messaging me.
07:01Hey, beautiful.
07:02Oh, my goodness, I've seen the picture you posted today.
07:05You look so beautiful.
07:07And so that's what got my attention, you know.
07:10That's where I, like, started falling in love with him.
07:16After we started dating, he would come to the hospital with me,
07:19and he would actually stay in the hospital.
07:23He was my knight in shining armor.
07:26He would always call me his queen,
07:28and he would always say, you know, every king needs his queen.
07:32And, you know, my kids loved him.
07:36I did fall, it fall very, very hard for Joel.
07:40And it wasn't just, like, he was, like, my best friend.
07:43And, like, he knew me, I knew him.
08:06We were actually having a great day, and we were out swimming,
08:09and we were having such a good time.
08:11Who are you?
08:12Who are you?
08:13And then he thinks it's hilarious to grab my shoulders
08:19and just hold me under.
08:24And I'm sitting here, splashing the water, trying to get him off me.
08:27I was trying, you know, to kick my legs,
08:29but my legs were right around him.
08:31And he had my, had me pressed up against him
08:36and holding my shoulders down.
08:40When I was underneath the water, I really couldn't see very much.
08:44But then when I, when he let go,
08:47he has, like, this huge smile on his face.
08:50His eyes were, like, lit up.
08:53And he's just laughing so hard.
09:01Joel thinks it's hilarious.
09:04Like, he, like, fed off of it, basically.
09:11It wasn't just, like, giggles and everything.
09:15He enjoyed it.
09:17He, like, it, he got high off of it.
09:19It was his reality.
09:21And he just was, like, beaming.
09:24It, like, it made him so happy.
09:27Him causing me so much pain.
09:46One day, him and I were at my mom's
09:48and he ended up messaging, um, this girl.
09:56And supposedly, you know, she's just a friend.
09:59And I had an issue with that.
10:03And I'm, like, why are you in the bedroom messaging her?
10:08And that is when he took and grabbed me by my shoulders.
10:14And he was yelling at me in my face.
10:16And then all of a sudden, he took and just headbutted me.
10:20And then knocked me down.
10:25And I felt this instant pain in the middle of my forehead.
10:30And he got on top of me.
10:34I was, I was scared when he was on top of me.
10:37He was angry.
10:38And, like, his eyes, they go black.
10:44And to this day, that, his face still harms me.
10:48I wasn't looking at Joel.
10:50I was looking at that evil demon that he had in him.
11:01After he headbutted me, it was a totally different person.
11:06The person I'd seen on top of me.
11:09And, you know, I'm, I'm hurting.
11:11And I'm scared.
11:13And he has this smirk on his face.
11:16And it was pure evil.
11:19I knew right then I was, I was looking at the devil.
11:25But then my nephew ended up banging on the door.
11:29And then that got Joel off of me.
11:34And Joel ended up leaving.
11:54When, when it was good, it was great.
11:57And that's what I was holding on to.
12:00I did see, like, hope in him.
12:04I didn't want to give up on him.
12:05You know, I, I loved him enough to stay.
12:09And I just, I just couldn't give up on him.
12:13He was saying he was sorry, that it won't happen again.
12:16He loves me.
12:18He can't live without me.
12:21I was still hoping that, you know, maybe he will come around.
12:24Maybe things will be different.
12:25And just give him a little bit more time, you know.
12:28I don't want to give up on him just yet.
12:30But I loved him.
12:33And I'm like, you know what?
12:34I'm going to fight for this love.
12:51We would be laying in the bed and, you know, watching our phones.
12:55Winnie, he would just be over there just watching violent videos.
12:59Joel would laugh.
13:00And you're like, look, bae, look, bae.
13:04He got his jaw broken.
13:08Or, look, bae, look, his blood is, like, coming out of his head.
13:13He, one hit, watch this hit.
13:15All it took was one hit to open his skin up.
13:19I honestly think he liked the gore of it, like, the blood and someone being in pain.
13:25Like, he loved when somebody was in pain.
13:29And I look at it, and I'm like, that's just not funny.
13:32Like, what are you doing?
13:33And I look at him, and he has, like, like, you know how when you see a newborn puppy, you're
13:39like, it's so cute.
13:40You're smiling.
13:41And that is how he was, like, but it was gruesome.
13:48It gave him relief, like, you know, watching somebody get pain calls to them.
13:56Like, he enjoyed it.
13:59I felt disgusted.
14:01And, like, like, I thought he was demented to look at that and, like, get off on that.
14:09They're just wondering, you know, what was wrong with them.
14:13And it, it was just awful.
14:27He started telling me that his grandfather was mowing one day, and he found little bunnies in, like, a tall
14:36area of the grass.
14:37And he picked the bunnies up, and then as his grandfather came around with a lawnmower, he threw the bunnies
14:45in front of the lawnmower, and they got ran over.
14:50And he enjoyed seeing, like, the bunny parts and the blood splatter out from the lawnmower.
14:58And Joel just thought it was funny.
15:03At first, Joel's laugh was, like, his normal laugh, and then, like, after he saw, like, the disgusted look on
15:10my face, it turned into, like, an evil laugh.
15:15Like, you know how you see in the cartoons, like, the bad guy, they laugh?
15:19That's how he laughed.
15:22Joel loved violence.
15:24I think that causing somebody pain, like, like, you can control how bad that person hurts.
15:33And I think he really enjoyed, like, the pain of it.
15:38There was, like, two sides to Joel.
15:41There was the caring, sweet, but then there was a demon Joel.
15:45And it seemed like the longer he was the sweet Joel, the, the harder the demon would come out.
16:04I really honestly thought my love could fix him.
16:07I thought my prayers could fix him.
16:10He would be asleep next to me, and I would pray for whatever, you know, he's fighting.
16:16Like, if he can overcome it.
16:19And I told God to please, like, help Joel get through this.
16:24Like, Lord, I don't know what all he's going through, but I, I also, like, understand something is obviously going
16:31on with him.
16:32They, he's battling demons that I don't know of, that he's not speaking of.
16:37And, um, I wanted Joel to get better, and I asked God to make Joel better.
16:46And the, the Joel that I fell in love with will eventually be the Joel that he is.
16:53But in reality, the Joel that I fell in love with was just a mask.
17:09One day we were driving down the road, and he was just being ugly to me.
17:15And I told him to pull over, because I didn't want to go home.
17:21And I undo my seatbelt, and open the door.
17:26And as I get the door opened, he takes off.
17:38This is the road rash I got because of Joel.
17:44I took this picture because I kind of wanted, I guess, to remind myself of what he did.
17:50And, like, I remember him, like, laughing, that evil laugh and that smirk he had on his face.
17:58And when I slipped, that's when I got the road rash.
18:14It was, like, his videos that he used to watch, like, the gore and, like, the blood.
18:21And that's what I guess he got so excited for, because his videos that he used to watch and love
18:27to watch happened in real life.
18:29And he got to see it firsthand.
18:34He took me to the hospital.
18:36He told me to tell him I wrecked a scooter.
18:39And that's what I did.
18:41He never apologized.
18:45He thought it was funny.
18:46So why did you cover for him?
18:49I just, I just didn't, I just didn't want him in trouble.
18:57And so I lied.
19:01Joel knew I loved him.
19:03And Joel knew I wasn't going anywhere.
19:06And no matter what he did, I was always going to be there.
19:19One thing we haven't talked about is the tattoo on your neck.
19:24Yeah.
19:27It says always with his initials right here.
19:31I did make a promise to myself.
19:34I'm like, well, I'm never going to leave you.
19:35I love you.
19:37I would tell him, be like, I love you.
19:39He's like, I love you too.
19:41And he would say forever.
19:43And I would say always.
19:46And I personally don't like neck tattoos.
19:48But he wanted it on my neck.
19:52He's like, get it on your neck.
19:54You know, I was like, no, you know, let me do it on my arm.
19:57And he's like, no, get it on your neck.
20:01I really honestly believe that he made it on my neck so other people can know that I guess
20:08I'm his property.
20:10You know, I belong to him.
20:12And in his sick way, it was like a pleasure for him.
20:16Because not only did he mark me, he marked me on my neck where he would strangle the life
20:22out of me.
20:34The kids are mostly with me.
20:36Occasionally, they would go to their dad's.
20:39He would get them every other weekend.
20:42And, um, like I remember one day I was at home and I said I was leaving and I was
20:49going
20:49to go to my mom's.
20:50And then Joel comes in and he got in front of me and he was like, no, you're not.
20:55And I'm like, yeah, I am.
20:56I'm not letting you go.
20:59And he ended up pushing me to the ground.
21:03And then he straddled me.
21:07And he ended up starting choking me.
21:10His eyes went dark.
21:12That face still haunts me in my dreams because I still see him.
21:17And, um, like I pass out.
21:30And then I wake up and, um, I was very confused because when he first knocked me down, I had
21:37my pants on.
21:39And, of course, I don't remember him taking it off.
21:42I don't know how long I was out for.
21:44I don't know what he did to me.
21:46But the only, you only have your pants off for one reason.
21:50So.
21:52He really enjoyed being able to, I guess, control, to control me like that.
22:00And, um, he got pleasure from it.
22:03Um, so he started doing it more often.
22:07It got to the point where it was, it was at least three times a week I was getting strangled
22:11until I was unconscious.
22:14And some weeks it was more.
22:21It was like an addiction that he needed, that he enjoyed, that it got him high, that I, he
22:29could push me this close and, you know, I didn't die.
22:32And, like, you know, he would hold my throat a little bit longer each time.
22:35And then it got to the point that I was passing out.
22:39Um, and, you know, if you think about it, like, you know, he's strangling me.
22:45And it's just a moment of seconds before you pass out and then you die.
22:49And, um, that, that's scary.
22:53It was, it was really scary.
22:57It was torture.
22:59And, like, he got off on the torture.
23:01And he liked the fact that he was, like, he was in charge of it.
23:05I do believe that he was seeing how close I can get to death.
23:10Every time he did, like, when I was looking in his eyes.
23:14It was like a demon I seen.
23:16Like, I didn't see Jill Whopper.
23:19It, it was pure evil.
23:35I wanted to tell my mom what was going on.
23:39I wanted to tell my brother what was going on.
23:42Um, like, I felt bad because they thought I didn't want to be around them.
23:46And that's not the case at all.
23:48Like, I wanted to go around them and I wanted to explain what the, like, all the hell I went
23:52through.
23:53And that I was going through.
23:55But I couldn't.
24:05Quite a few times he would say that he would hurt my mom.
24:08Just to hurt me.
24:10Like, that was, like, the only way he could hurt me is to hurt her.
24:19He was always afraid that my mom would be able to talk me out of staying with him.
24:26And so he really didn't like me talking to her.
24:28Especially, like, before, if I was talking to her, he had to be right there.
24:36I think he was more afraid of what I was telling my mom.
24:39He's, like, you know, blowing his cover, I guess.
24:42It was, like, damn it if I do, damn it if I don't.
24:45I figured, you know, if I stayed, they could end up killing me.
24:50But if I left, it's not just me anymore, it's my mom.
25:03I've had it with you, Joel.
25:05I'm not doing this anymore.
25:07One day, Joel and I were arguing.
25:10And I told him I was going to leave.
25:13And he's like, no, you're not.
25:14I'm like, yes, I am.
25:16I'm tired of this, Joel.
25:17I can't do this anymore.
25:18I'm leaving.
25:20Well, I'm in the bathroom.
25:22And there's no way for me to get out.
25:25And he got mad.
25:26And he knocked me down.
25:28And I fell into the tub.
25:29And that's when he turned the water on.
25:34And he was holding the shower head in my face
25:38and making the tub fill up with water.
25:43He's holding me under.
25:44And I'm like, oh, my gosh.
25:46I'm going to die.
25:54I was afraid I was going to drown.
25:56And my kids were there at the time.
25:58And I was scared because I didn't want my kids
26:01to see me that way.
26:03But then my son started knocking on the door
26:04and said, what's going on?
26:07Hello?
26:11That's when he stopped.
26:12And it was like the fun, loving Joel.
26:17He took and threw me a towel.
26:20He didn't do anything in front of anybody.
26:23Joel would only hit me behind closed doors.
26:33It seemed like each time he was, like, physical with me,
26:38like, the next time he was going to top that,
26:41he was honestly pushing to see how far
26:44he could actually take it.
26:48He had to go a little further
26:49or he didn't get enjoyment out of it.
26:52Like, he wanted more and more and more.
26:55And each time got rough and scarier.
26:59And, like, you know, he would hold my throat
27:01a little bit longer each time.
27:02He was seeing how close I can get to death.
27:16We went fishing a few times.
27:18And then all of a sudden,
27:20he comes up behind me and grabs me at my shoulders.
27:25And it was, like, right here in my ear.
27:27And that's when he sits there and says that, you know,
27:30he can dump me in this pond and nobody will ever find me.
27:34And, like, turns me to face him.
27:38So I'm looking at him.
27:40And he does this little smirk he would do.
27:44And he told me that he was going to kill me
27:46and dump me in a pond and nobody will ever see me again.
27:49He's going to say that I got hooked on drugs
27:52and that I ran off with a dealer.
27:54He's like, they're never going to see you again.
28:00And then he let me go.
28:04It was like nothing happened.
28:06Like, he was just telling me,
28:06oh, the fish are biting over here.
28:13And, you know, my heart kind of, like, fell out of my chest.
28:20And, like, I wanted to believe,
28:22I wanted to think he was playing,
28:25but deep down I knew he was dead serious.
28:34Tell me what this is.
28:42Um, this is a picture of the cage that I was in.
28:46And, um, right here is my son's jacket
28:52that Joel made me hold.
28:55Um, he told me to hold this jacket
28:59while you die, bitch.
29:01Because you're never going to see your kids again.
29:20I'm sitting in the living room
29:22and he sees me on the phone.
29:24And he just gets that evil look in his eyes,
29:27like, who is she talking to?
29:30And he accused me of talking to another man.
29:34And I get off the phone with her.
29:36And I'm like, why did you do that?
29:37I go, I was on the phone with my mom.
29:39He's like, huh?
29:40I go, I was on the phone with mama.
29:42I'm like, why are you doing that?
29:43He's like, sure, sure, you were talking to your mom.
29:48I go, you know what?
29:48I'm tired of this, Joel.
29:50I'm leaving.
29:52And he ends up grabbing my head
29:57and slamming it into the door frame.
30:01And my phone actually called my mom.
30:04And she heard me say,
30:07Joel, you made me bleed.
30:09And, like, blood is pouring all over my face.
30:11You know, I can feel it.
30:13He told me that, um,
30:16since I'm going to act like a bitch,
30:17I'm going to get treated like a bitch.
30:20He locked me in my dog's cage.
30:24And a short time later, I heard drilling.
30:32And I immediately was like,
30:34oh, he is, he is screwing screws in the door.
30:38He is keeping me in this house.
30:45And that's when, like, I,
30:47like, I was already scared.
30:49But that's when I became terrified.
30:51I'm like, how is he going to finish me?
30:54Like, is he just going to let me lay here
30:56and bleed to death?
30:58Is he going to strangle me?
31:01Well, as I'm hearing him screw,
31:04screws in the door,
31:07um, you know,
31:08I love, I love crime shows.
31:09So I know that they would spray, like,
31:11luminol, and it would light up.
31:14So, um,
31:16I took the blood on my forehead.
31:18I wrote on the wall,
31:20in my own blood,
31:22um, he killed me.
31:24Because I was like,
31:25I need to let them know,
31:26hey, I didn't run off.
31:29And nobody would be able to find out where I'm at.
31:32And he said it before,
31:33that he will take and dispose of my body in a pond,
31:37and he would tell my family that I ran off.
31:42Just as I got done writing,
31:45and then I kind of, like,
31:46put my back to the wall,
31:48and he sits on the edge of the bed,
31:50and is just watching me.
31:52I didn't want him to, like, prolong it.
31:55I didn't want him to just, like, make me suffer.
31:58I didn't want him to continue to torture me.
32:01So I was just saying,
32:02please, God, just let it be fast.
32:09And my dad could come and get me
32:12and take me home.
32:18And I kind of, um,
32:21go unconscious again.
32:23And I hear my mom.
32:26Um, I hear her go,
32:29Christy, Christy, baby girl.
32:32And I hear pounding.
32:44If my phone didn't call my mom,
32:46I, I would be in a pond right now.
32:56Where's he at?
32:57I'm just mad.
32:58I'm just mad.
33:00What's up?
33:04Christy, come to the door.
33:07Christy.
33:08Christy.
33:11Christy, come to the door.
33:12No.
33:13No.
33:14Help me.
33:16I can't get down.
33:17I can't get down.
33:30Search him.
33:32Dude, y'all are, like, really treating me like I could be.
33:36I put it on everything I love.
33:38That's what happened.
33:41Dude, I put it on God.
33:42Okay.
33:43I'm glad.
33:44Yeah, I don't believe you.
33:46She started slamming her hands into the door.
33:48Get in the car.
33:49Get in the car.
33:52Watch your leg.
33:58I've never seen that clip before.
34:01How does he look to you?
34:04He looks like an evil prick.
34:08He doesn't, he doesn't look remorseful.
34:11He's not sorry.
34:13He might be sorry that he didn't get to finish what he started.
34:16But that's the only thing he's sorry about.
34:33The doctors said that with all the head injuries that Joel caused and all the times he would
34:40strangle me until I was unconscious, caused me to have brain damage.
34:45They didn't think that they would be able to fix me.
34:49They sent me to a nursing home to die closer to my family.
34:56They told my mom that I most likely would not make it.
35:02And if I did make it, I would never get out of bed again.
35:08I'm really scared because I was only like 35, I think, at this point.
35:18And, you know, I wanted to watch my kids grow up.
35:21You know, I wanted, I wanted to still be a mom.
35:25I got very angry that Joel did this.
35:29That's when, I guess, like the spell he had over me broke.
35:55Um, Joel's sister reached out to me.
35:59She wrote,
36:01I was telling my friend who knew Joel as a kid the history of his abuse, and he was shocked.
36:06It ends with you, but there is a long line of women who were subject to his abuse.
36:11Me, both his grandmothers, his previous ex-girlfriends, and now I'm hearing about his sister, his cousin, and his aunt.
36:22His older sister told me that he ended up pushing his grandmother down the stairs.
36:28And there was one incident where he was arguing with his grandmother, and his grandfather, I guess, stepped in.
36:38And that's when Joel hit him in the head with a trophy.
36:52I knew I was going to have to testify, and I knew seeing him was going to be, like, really
36:57hard.
36:59And, to be honest, it made me sick, the thought of seeing him again.
37:04I didn't, I didn't want to see him.
37:08But, like, after finding out, you know, that he did that to his grandmother and other members of his family,
37:13you know, it made me more confident in myself.
37:18And, like, it was crystal clear I needed to do what I needed to do to get him, um, to
37:25get him in prison for as long as possible.
37:29And, um, looking back, you know, how I said, like, there was, like, a demon in him.
37:36And there truly was a demon in him.
37:39He's dangerous to everyone.
37:41Like, nobody's safer around Joel.
37:44And, um, like, you know, I realized I wasn't his first, but I made, I made sure I was his
37:50last.
37:52And nobody's going to get hurt by the hands of Joel Walker again.
38:13He was sentenced to 50 years, 11 months, and 29 days in prison.
38:22That's a long time.
38:23Yes, it is a very long time.
38:25When you say that, you have a smile on your face.
38:27Because he, he can't hurt me anymore.
38:31And it's not really just about me.
38:33He can't hurt another woman like he hurt me.
38:43I rely on my mom a lot.
38:45And, um, sometimes it's hard because she's supposed to rely on me.
38:51You know, it's supposed to be the other way around.
38:53And, um, here, here I am, 39 years old, having, to have my mom help me with, like, things I
39:00should be able to do on my own.
39:03Sometimes I lose my balance a lot.
39:05And then I think a lot of it is also anxiety.
39:10It's honestly still, like, putting a toll on me.
39:15I have really, really bad nightmares about him.
39:18And I, I still do.
39:23Like, just the other day, I, I try to get up and run.
39:27And, like, I have some nightmares that, like, you know, if you're dreaming inside of a dream, like, you wake
39:33up and he's still there.
39:38To be honest, I hate looking at myself because my body, like, things have changed since Joel.
39:45And, like, it's, it's hard to miss this huge neck tattoo.
39:51And it's just, like, a constant reminder of what all, like, what all he put me through.
39:57And it reminds me of all the times he strangled me.
40:01So it's hard to look at.
40:05I do think about wanting to get it covered up.
40:08I've actually got a design for it.
40:11And purple is for domestic violence color.
40:14So I want purple in there.
40:16And hopefully one day I'll be able, be able to do it.
40:22I have a lot of emotions, you know.
40:24It's nice to get it out.
40:26Like, it's good to finally, you know, get it off my chest.
40:30Because, you know, I've been holding it for five years.
40:34It's difficult.
40:35But it's nice to finally be able to express and say everything he's done.
40:43And I just think of how I used to be and how I miss the old Christy.
40:50And she's never coming back.
40:54But I'm thanking God now for letting me survive, you know, allowing me to still be with my kids.
41:02I was gone for two years.
41:04And I'm finally home.
41:06So instead of please, God, will you, it's thank you, God, for everything you've done.
41:18Policemen are supposed to be good people, you know.
41:21They're supposed to be.
41:23My mom, she was in love with the man.
41:24Tried to get her to stop, but she stayed by him.
41:27It was a bombshell when the killer turned out to be a sheriff's deputy, David Keith Rogers.
41:34The man's a monster.
41:35The man's a monster.
