00:16In previous episodes, we talked about how movie and aimy combat is in Wildstar.
00:22After all, combat is what you will be doing most often, so we want to make sure you're
00:26having fun out there.
00:27We showed you crowd control.
00:28How breakout gameplay gives you a way to fight back when disabled.
00:33But before we get to talking about classes, and we can't wait, we need to have a little
00:38chat about the special sauce in our combat sandwich.
00:41It's the way you, as the player, control what your character can do.
00:45I'm talking about ability mechanics.
00:49In other words, how you interact with the game in order to use your abilities.
00:53Now, in most MMOs, you've got your standard set.
00:57Instant abilities.
00:59Cast time.
01:00And channel.
01:02Instant.

01:03Channel.
01:04Instant.

01:05Channel.
01:06Hit the button.
01:07Wait for it to do its thing.

01:11In Wildstar, we needed players to interact
01:13with their abilities in a much more reactive way.
01:15Because circumstances can change.
01:17Quickly.
01:18That's why, in addition to instant abilities, we've made the vast majority of our cast time
01:23and channel spells mobile.
01:26Whether you're channeling and chasing, or charging and fleeing.
01:30On top of that, we've added a whole suite of cast methods designed to be reactive.
01:35Like Rapid Tap.
01:36Wait until an enemy is vulnerable, and tap, tap, tap.
01:39Once you activate it, you've only got a short window to get your hits in.
01:43So tap it while it counts.
01:45Ability charges have multiple uses, but no time limit.
01:48So fire off some steady damage and keep one in reserve.
01:51Or stun this poor chump and dump all your charges.
01:55Ya dead.
01:56Charge and release is a more reactive take on cast time.
01:59You can hold the button to charge up.
02:01But if homie pulls a fast one, fire it off and change tactics.
02:05Might not do as much damage, but it won't go to waste.
02:09Press and hold is a reactive channel and feels supremely gratifying.
02:13Hold the button, people start dying.
02:16Need to react to something?
02:17Just let go and do your thing.
02:19What this approach to ability mechanics does
02:21is take a combat system built on movement and aiming
02:24and adds reactive mobile casting.
02:26And variety.
02:28Cause be it healer, tank or DPS,
02:31we think everyone deserves to feel like a spider monkey ninja.
