00:00Best home performance and best home occasion here of the season?
00:03Absolutely, I agree with that. I thought it was our best performance from the first minute, really, right on.
00:10I thought we'd done a really good job. Chelsea were coming here probably hurting a little bit from their recent
00:16results,
00:18but we were able to nullify it at different times, but they've got so much quality on their side as
00:24well,
00:25it was always going to be a difficult game to deal with the level of players they had.
00:28What particularly impressed you about your performance tonight?
00:32I think the intensity from the start, really. I think the way we went about the game.
00:38I thought we played really well at times as well. I thought we played some really good football.
00:44Generally as well, I think the way the players conducted them. I think they realised the importance of the game
00:51and the importance of us trying to win a couple of big games in the remaining fix just before the
00:57end of the season.
00:58So tonight was a big game. The crowd made it feel like a big game.
01:03It was a brilliant atmosphere inside the stadium. It was more like Goodison than we've probably had in any other
01:09game.
01:11I don't know if the 5.30 kick-off helped that instead of the 8pm on a Monday night,
01:17but obviously it was a really, really good night and a big thank you to the support for the part
01:25they played in helping us today.
01:27This gentleman on the front, next please.
01:32Hi David. Liam's just been in here and he said that he thinks that his team did have plenty of
01:37chances
01:37and entered the final third and had lots of shots and that it was something of an even game in
01:42a sense.
01:43Do you agree with that?
01:45And if so, does that make you more pleased with the manner and the size of the victory that you
01:48were able to be so climactic?
01:49Well, I think if you were turning around here and saying that we were far better, then there'd be something
01:53wrong.
01:53The level of quality of players they have, you'd be expecting that.
01:57Our goalkeeper made a couple of wonderful saves at 1-0, which could have changed the game.
02:07I think it would be hard to say that we didn't have to win that game tonight if you were
02:11trying to allude to that at all,
02:13which I don't think you were.
02:14I should be off your head if you were.
02:17But I do believe that, yeah, I mean, we couldn't expect Chelsea in Champions League.
02:22They were playing in the last 16 teams, so the level of what they've got is so good.
02:27So we might have just caught them.
02:31You know, David, a big game in midweek.
02:32I know what it's like when you've got midweek games.
02:34You have to come again.
02:35Never easy.
02:37And we took a little bit of advantage of that, I think, tonight.
02:43Liz?
02:45Hi, David.
02:46Obviously, Jordan and Jimmy are in the England squad, but Kiernan maybe could count himself a little bit unlucky.
02:52What do you think those performances say about that sort of decision?
02:55Well, it's not me.
02:56I don't make the decisions on who's picked an England team.
02:59Never will.
03:03But I have to say that, if anything, I would say it's proof that Jimmy Garner was the best player
03:11on the pitch, head and shoulders.
03:13And he's up against so many players who will go to the World Cup and so many players who play
03:19international football.
03:21So I think the goalkeeper shows you exactly what you can do.
03:24He probably knows it.
03:26Last week, he probably just missed out on something last week a little bit.
03:29Today, he made up for it, definitely.
03:31He's an excellent goalkeeper.
03:33And Kiernan's a little bit unlucky, if you ask me, only because the amount of players England have got to
03:41choose from in a sort of higher midfield position is so big.
03:48I think it makes it hard.
03:49But Kiernan's performances for us have been fantastic, really have been.
03:54Just could I ask, how big is that for your European aspirations?
03:57And I would say also, in terms of potentially, it's a bit maybe pie in the sky, but Champions League
04:02qualification.
04:04Yeah, the last bit probably is, I would love to say it wasn't, because I'm trying to be more positive
04:09than I would normally be.
04:11But I have to say that we, I think forever to even be in the mix for Europe is unbelievable.
04:19Whether it be the Conference League or whether it be the Champions League, it would be amazing when you think
04:24of the troubles.
04:25And it was only, we were probably sitting this time last year wondering if we could get out.
04:29I don't know exactly where we were this time last year, but we were just beginning to edge ourselves away
04:34from relegation.
04:35We still had lots of money to pay off as well.
04:39New ownership.
04:40We were going to get rid of, I don't know, 10 or 12 players, or we had 10 or 12
04:44out of contract.
04:45So for us to be in a position like this just now is great.
04:48And I hope they can stay in the top half of the league.
04:51That would be, by the end, would be great.
04:54But we've got our eyes on something else really now.
05:01Hi David, congratulations.
05:02I wanted to ask about the, you know, we've seen Liam's come in talking about fragility in the last 10
05:07days.
05:07And the atmosphere just from when the bus came through and all the fans and this place rocking.
05:13How powerful can that be, the fortress, the power of the families?
05:17I think it was really difficult to explain sometimes to people, you know, what it was like at Goodison.
05:21And we used to have that feel.
05:22So, I've got to say, I think the team, the team gave the supporters something tonight as well.
05:27By the way, the support was great.
05:29The coming in was fantastic.
05:32I think a lot of people, nice day, got here a bit earlier.
05:35A lot of people around the place a bit earlier.
05:37Probably had a couple of drinks.
05:40But generally, it was a brilliant, brilliant atmosphere tonight.
05:44And, you know, the players deserved it.
05:46The players deserved what they got from the supporters tonight because they were right at it from minute one.
05:51They really were.
05:52Joe?
05:52David, Everton have wanted and needed a performance like that from Beto for so long.
05:57Just how pleased were you to see him deliver it?
05:59Well, I think Beto, we all know, but I think his all-round game tonight was much better.
06:05His link-up play was better.
06:07You know, he gets two goals tonight in a big game.
06:11And it says a lot.
06:12I keep saying that.
06:13I've said it in every interview for the people who are not normally here.
06:15He's a great boy to work with.
06:17Incredibly humble.
06:18Tries to improve himself every day.
06:20And sometimes when you work like that, you get good fortune and good luck.
06:24And I'm not saying it was good luck, but he certainly got what he deserved from the work he puts
06:29in.
06:30You've made a habit of getting good results just before big breaks this season.
06:34And obviously a lot of the players will go away for international duty.
06:36But just how much does that mean to the next three weeks to be able to go in a high
06:41like that?
06:42Well, I'm actually a bit disappointed now that there is a break.
06:45Because I think we've got a bit of confidence and I think we're playing with a bit more self-belief.
06:50And you can see it.
06:51But I'm hoping that the likes of Jimmy Gardner, who's going to wait for his first international cap,
06:55hope cap for his international trip.
06:58Don't know if he'll get capped or not.
06:59But I hope he comes back even a better player.
07:04The boys who go away, you know, who've not been there before and it can make them better
07:08and they can see what other top players are like.
07:12But I would have probably liked a game that we were playing at the moment.
07:15I'd like just to keep it going.
07:17We've got a relative.
07:18We've got Tarki and Jared back, which really helps us greatly as well.
07:22So we're beginning to get back to having a full squad as well.
07:27Hi, David.
07:28You mentioned before the progression you've made over the last 12 months,
07:31not only coming from relegation to a European fight, but also the evolution of the squad.
07:37I know your own contract is up at the end of next year.
07:41Are you already starting to think maybe the possibility of a European campaign,
07:45maybe extending that a little bit further?
07:47Are you enjoying your time back in Everton?
07:49Well, I've got a year to go anyway, so I'm fine.
07:53I'm not too worried about that.
07:54The big bit for me is the word that you used there, European.
07:59It changed an awful lot of things that we've done at West Ham the minute we got European football.
08:05It altered a lot of the way we all looked and the way the club was.
08:11What it done for the West Ham supporters to be on a European tour,
08:16winning group stages and whether it was the Europa League or the conference.
08:21So I can imagine if we could possibly do it, what it would do to the crowd here.
08:28You know, we've got 53,000, I think.
08:30Is it 50?
08:30Yeah, 52,500.
08:32You know, we'd be selling out all those games because Evertonians are desperate to get back in amongst it
08:38and they want to be challenging about or around the big competition.
08:42So, look, we'll try, but if we don't make it, then we won't.
08:47I don't think we'll turn around and say it's been incredibly disappointing.
08:50I think we'll probably more likely say, hey, we've probably had a pretty good successful season,
08:54but we've got seven games to go and we're going to have to win another couple of big games
08:58and I'm going to need the atmosphere and the crowd to play a big part.
09:03Final one.
09:05Hi, Dave.
09:06Hi, Dave.
09:06Just ask about Beto, because I think Matthew Benham,
09:09that Brentford's almost had a couple of weeks ago,
09:12he sort of gave him credit that he's always in positions
09:15and maybe sometimes he misses chances, but you shouldn't really judge him on that.
09:20Is that what you feel like with him, that you know that even though he does have peaks and troughs,
09:25he's always in the game, he always gives the opposition something to think about
09:28because he does play with an edge.
09:30I agree.
09:31He does.
09:31He's got, you know, when I came in last year,
09:35I think he had five one-on-ones with goalkeepers
09:37and I'm saying you don't get one-on-ones with goalkeepers.
09:41Tonight was a little bit of a one-on-one, to be honest.
09:43He played through, even, you know, just inside the centre-half
09:47and he got to it before the goalkeeper.
09:49But last year he had five one-on-ones and he might have scored three of them.
09:52I can't remember exactly what they were.
09:55And very few players get those opportunities.
09:57You don't see so many now in football.
10:01But he sort of dried up maybe the way we played.
10:04I have to say his work, his link-up plays improved great.
10:08And I have to say so is Tiano Baris.
10:10Both of them have made big improvements on it.
10:13Maybe the way we're playing is helping them in some ways.
10:17But what we needed them to do is score the goals and Beto got them.
10:21And he trains every day to try and score.
10:24And some days you walk off going shaking your head and saying,
10:26oh, my goodness.
10:27But there's other days you come away and think,
10:29this boy's all heart, effort, trying to make it work.
10:33And he's getting his rewards for it.
10:36Last one.
10:37Hi, David.
10:38You mentioned James Garner being the best player on the pitch.
10:41I was wondering if you could elaborate on why.
10:43And maybe he was at right back last week and you moved him to midfield and that pass for the
10:47first goal.
10:47I thought his, well, his pass for the first goal was exquisite.
10:51I think that the levels of the players he's playing against tonight was always going to be a judge to
10:55see how he could perform.
10:58I think he's taken that on greatly.
11:01He's saying he's nearly taken it as a challenge.
11:03And I thought tonight, the way he played, his endeavour to recover the ball back, his speed to recover the
11:08ball back,
11:10is another side of his game which we need because we don't always have the ball as much as maybe
11:15the likes of a Chelsea.
11:19And that level of performance isn't just tonight.
11:21That level of performance has been there.
11:23And that's why he's been called up.
11:26And he's had to play well because the last international game was, I don't know, was it January?
11:30When was the last international game?
11:31Before Christmas.
11:32Before Christmas.
11:34So he was on the radar, didn't quite make it.
11:37So he's had to keep his form up from sort of before Christmas or whatever that, in November it might
11:42have been, to March.
11:43And I think he has.
11:44I think he's probably been at a level which he had to keep doing it all the time.
11:50Up against Fernandes tonight or Elliot Anderson at Knott's Forest or Declan Rice at Arsenal.
11:56So if you think of the levels of the players he's having to play up against and compete, he's doing
12:00a brilliant job.
12:02Thanks everybody.
