00:00:31November marks the 10-year anniversary of Halo 2
00:00:34And I am excited to tell you that Halo 2 is getting the full anniversary treatment
00:00:39The puzzle becomes, how do you honor the material?
00:00:43How do you keep it fresh and interesting for, you know, a new generation?
00:00:48Halo is about this incredibly powerful hero, Master Chief and his AI sidekick, Cortana
00:00:56And their journey to save the Earth
00:00:59We've always been very, very concerned with maintaining that gameplay to just feel authentic
00:01:03The moment that kicks in, you're like, yes, let's go
00:01:15We decided to go out and capture new source material this time around
00:01:30My friend's trust is not the issue today, Spartan Locke
00:01:35It's just absolute home run
00:01:37It's probably some of the best fun I've ever had in Halo
00:01:39And that's a pretty major statement
00:01:42At the end of the day, everybody has one thing in common
00:01:44And that is a love for what we're doing
00:01:47And a passion to make this the best it can be
00:02:03So when I joined Bungie in 1998, I got hired to work on the Myth 2 team
00:02:09And as I was working on Myth 2, in one room, there was this other room with a smaller number
00:02:13of guys in it working on
00:02:14Something else, which at the time was called Blam, this totally top-secret code-named game
00:02:20That at first was a lot like Myth, it was an RTS
00:02:23But it slowly evolved over time into a third-person game that was on the Mac and PC
00:02:28And then it became a first-person game that all of a sudden, bam, was on the console when we
00:02:33got bought by Microsoft
00:02:34But Halo went through lots of different permutations along the road before the first version came out
00:02:40When we were working on Halo, it was actually the first time that we were developing a game first on
00:02:45Windows
00:02:46And people don't know that because Steve Jobs got up at Macworld and showed off Halo for the first time
00:02:52And said, and it's being developed first for the Mac
00:02:55It actually wasn't true
00:02:56We had to scramble to do a Mac port of the game at the last minute before that Macworld conference
00:03:00And this is the first time anybody has ever seen it
00:03:04It's the first time they've debuted it
00:03:06I remember Joe Staten, our writer, came to me and said, yeah, Marty, we need something
00:03:10We're doing it on Tuesday and it's like, this is Friday
00:03:13So I'm like, oh my gosh
00:03:15So I said, okay, so it's just going to be music
00:03:17I'm going to give you a CD
00:03:19Somebody hits play on the CD
00:03:21Jason's going to go up on stage and hit the space bar on the scripted demo
00:03:25And we're just going to cross our fingers and hope that all this stuff comes together
00:03:29I asked Joe, all right, what's the emotional tone?
00:03:32What's the story we're trying to tell?
00:03:34He goes, I don't know, but it needs to be ancient, epic, and mysterious
00:03:38I'm like, okay, okay, ancient, epic, mysterious
00:03:42So I called up my partner, Mike
00:03:44And I said, Mike, I'm going to come over
00:03:46We need to, like, figure out a way to do music
00:03:48We're going to record on Monday with an orchestra and some singers
00:03:52But I don't know what we're recording yet
00:03:54So this is, I believe, a Saturday
00:03:55And we're recording on Monday
00:03:58So on the way to his house, I'm driving over
00:04:00And I'm like, okay, ancient, epic, mysterious
00:04:04Well, ancient
00:04:06Gregorian chant monk singing
00:04:07So I made up a melody while I was in the car
00:04:12No
00:04:12No, yeah
00:04:16I came up with the whole melody
00:04:18In about the half hour it took me to drive to Mike's house
00:04:20I walk in, I said, Mike, okay
00:04:22We're going to do, like, big, epic orchestra
00:04:25But we're going to start with monk singing
00:04:27And we're going to end with monk singing
00:04:28And that'll give us this nice, epic, ancient feel
00:04:32And Mike's like, yeah, cool
00:04:35He's like, Mike, I got this idea
00:04:36And we've got to be done with it by Tuesday
00:04:37And I was like, it was just another thing
00:04:39To me, it was just another thing to do
00:04:42And I'm like, yeah, okay
00:04:43Yeah, we'll do it
00:04:44Okay, and what is this thing about monks?
00:04:47Really?
00:04:48Okay, cool
00:04:49Jason got up and pressed the button to start it
00:04:51And if you watch the video very closely
00:04:53You can watch Jason take a massive inhale of breath
00:04:56Right before he hits, okay
00:04:58Because there was one bug that would have just
00:05:01Really been bad if it happened at that moment
00:05:03So it was a, you know, heart-wrenching
00:05:06Exciting time for everybody
00:05:07But literally that was the first time
00:05:09We'd shown it to anybody who was on stage
00:05:11At the Javits in New York
00:05:12In this huge public forum
00:05:35This was a time where
00:05:37Big, expansive environments
00:05:40Weren't seen too often
00:05:41Certainly in sort of the shooter space
00:05:43Which had been very corridor focused for a long time
00:05:45If you remember the demo
00:05:46It started off indoors
00:05:48Pretty typical
00:05:49But right in the middle of the demo
00:05:51We took you outside
00:05:52In that moment of transition
00:05:54And the camera panned up
00:05:56To show you the sun and the vista
00:05:57And I think at that point
00:05:59Everybody who was watching
00:06:00And afterwards realized
00:06:02Wait, this is a step change
00:06:03In what we expect from
00:06:04From a typical shooter
00:06:06And in short order
00:06:08We were out in Redmond
00:06:09Getting it up and running on
00:06:10What was to become the Xbox
00:06:11Let me now unveil Xbox
00:06:20Five, four, three, two, one
00:06:24If you thought about gaming
00:06:27On consoles back then
00:06:29There had been some big hits
00:06:30In the first person shooter space
00:06:32With things like Goldeneye
00:06:33And Perfect Dark
00:06:34But there wasn't a long track record
00:06:36Of shooters being a healthy genre
00:06:39And a big genre on console
00:06:40Halo got it right
00:06:41Halo figured out how to make the controls
00:06:43How to make the balance work
00:06:45For first person shooters
00:06:46And I specifically remember back then
00:06:48People saying
00:06:49This will never work
00:06:50You cannot put
00:06:52A decent first person shooter
00:06:53On a console
00:06:54So when we were looking
00:06:55At kind of forecasts
00:06:56And how the marketing team
00:06:57And the sales team
00:06:58Thought games would sell
00:06:59Halo was somewhere down on the list
00:07:02It was pretty bleak
00:07:03And people weren't sure
00:07:04It was going to make it
00:07:05Frame rate was bad
00:07:07Shooters, are they really going to work
00:07:08On console, but it definitely became
00:07:12The hallmark of the original Xbox
00:07:13Not only brought the FPS to the console
00:07:15It brought story in an FPS
00:07:18You know, which I think is
00:07:19A huge, important part of Halo
00:07:21The Covenant found something
00:07:22Buried in this ring
00:07:24Something horrible
00:07:25Halo is about
00:07:26This incredibly powerful hero
00:07:29Master Chief
00:07:30And his AI sidekick, Cortana
00:07:33And their journey to save the Earth
00:07:36I mean, that's it
00:07:37I mean, certainly there's a lot of
00:07:38There's a lot of battles along the way
00:07:41And there's a lot of drama
00:07:42With the Covenant
00:07:43But that story takes twist and turn
00:07:45But your goal is to save the Earth
00:07:49Is it true?
00:07:51More or less
00:08:02Being the standout launch title
00:08:05For the Xbox
00:08:06Halo single-handedly put
00:08:08That piece of hardware
00:08:09Into millions and millions of homes
00:08:12When the Xbox first released
00:08:13It went to my neighbor's house
00:08:15I didn't get one
00:08:16My neighbor got one for Christmas
00:08:17And then he got Halo
00:08:19And I spent the next six days, I think
00:08:21Just at his house the entire time
00:08:23We just kept playing Halo
00:08:25And that's all we were doing
00:08:26And then eventually
00:08:26I ended up buying an Xbox
00:08:28Just so we could play Halo
00:08:29I played Halo at my friend's house
00:08:31And instantly loved it
00:08:33I mean, we were throwing
00:08:33Plasma grenades at each other
00:08:35For probably three hours
00:08:37And after that
00:08:38Immediately went home
00:08:39To my twin brother
00:08:40And said, alright
00:08:41We gotta pool our money
00:08:41And get an Xbox
00:08:43Everybody back then
00:08:45Knew what Halo was
00:08:46And as a result
00:08:47A lot more people
00:08:48Who probably weren't
00:08:49Hardcore gamers at the time
00:08:51Began to dive in
00:08:52And made the decision
00:08:54To buy an Xbox
00:08:54And discover even more
00:08:56When it seems like
00:08:57All is lost
00:08:59When it feels
00:09:00As if you have no hope
00:09:01Now, you know
00:09:02I don't think Xbox survives
00:09:04If Halo wasn't there
00:09:05If you looked at the other
00:09:06Launch games that we had
00:09:07Project Gotham
00:09:08Was a nice game
00:09:09There were a lot of games
00:09:10That proved that we could
00:09:12Actually ship
00:09:12Games on a gaming console
00:09:14And Microsoft kind of
00:09:15Had no business in doing that
00:09:16It was our first time
00:09:16Trying to do that
00:09:18But Halo was the thing
00:09:19That I think
00:09:20Made people look
00:09:21And that gave us
00:09:23Credibility
00:09:23In creating a console
00:09:25We didn't sell a lot
00:09:26Of the original Xbox
00:09:27If you go back
00:09:27With the sales figures
00:09:29But we sold a lot of Halo
00:09:33When we shipped Halo 1
00:09:35We had doubt
00:09:36About whether
00:09:37The game was going
00:09:38To be successful
00:09:38But we also didn't know
00:09:40If the Xbox
00:09:40Was going to be successful
00:09:42Frankly
00:09:42But we really didn't
00:09:43Spend too much time
00:09:44Thinking about
00:09:45What would we do next
00:09:46Because the odds
00:09:47Were stacked against us
00:09:48Of course
00:09:49When it hit
00:09:50And hit big
00:09:51Well that's when
00:09:52We had to scramble
00:09:57Our early plans
00:09:58For Halo 2
00:09:59To be completely honest
00:10:00Were pretty disorganized
00:10:02What everybody felt
00:10:04Very intensely
00:10:06Was
00:10:06We have a hit
00:10:07We can't just ship
00:10:09Another game like that
00:10:11It has to be bigger
00:10:12And better
00:10:13It has to have
00:10:13More features
00:10:14More weapons
00:10:16We knew that
00:10:17Our ambition
00:10:17Had to be greater
00:10:18But frankly
00:10:19We had no idea
00:10:20How to fill those shoes
00:10:22So we struggled
00:10:23For a long time
00:10:26Once we figured out
00:10:27In general
00:10:28Great
00:10:28So we're going to go
00:10:29We're really going to go
00:10:30After the virtual couch
00:10:31We're really going to go
00:10:31After matchmaking
00:10:32In a party system
00:10:33That team went heads down
00:10:34And ran
00:10:36Okay we're going to try
00:10:37To tell a more complicated
00:10:38Hopefully intriguing narrative
00:10:40Where you're coming
00:10:41As a playable character
00:10:41Okay story team
00:10:42Go
00:10:43And for a while
00:10:44Each team was
00:10:46Off in the wilderness
00:10:47Figuring out
00:10:48Well how the hell
00:10:48Are we going to do
00:10:49All this stuff
00:10:50I think it's really
00:10:50Important to be ambitious
00:10:51I think it's important
00:10:52To have more balls
00:10:53In the air
00:10:54Than you can catch
00:10:54At the end
00:10:55When it all
00:10:57Comes down to it
00:10:58And you have to ship a game
00:10:59But
00:11:01Certainly you can go too far
00:11:08The year is 2552
00:11:11After a long fight
00:11:12Our colonial defense
00:11:14Has failed
00:11:14And the covenant
00:11:15Have made their way to earth
00:11:16Even though I was on the project
00:11:18And sitting in the trenches
00:11:19With the other guys
00:11:20I kind of had blinders on
00:11:22You know what I knew
00:11:23About the campaign
00:11:23Was
00:11:26They probably cut
00:11:27I mean at least a third
00:11:28Of the total game
00:11:29Maybe as much as half
00:11:30I don't honestly know
00:11:31And that's why Halo 2
00:11:33Ended up with such
00:11:33A jarring ending
00:11:34This is Spartan 117
00:11:36Can anyone hear me?
00:11:38Over
00:11:38Isolate that signal
00:11:39Master Chief
00:11:41You mind telling me
00:11:42What you're doing
00:11:42On that ship?
00:11:44Sir
00:11:45Finishing this fight
00:11:47One of the things
00:11:47I thought about
00:11:48Really early on
00:11:49Was
00:11:50Imagine that there was
00:11:51A covenant commander
00:11:53Who was in charge
00:11:53Of events
00:11:54In the first Halo game
00:11:55How would he have felt
00:11:56When he fell flat on space
00:11:58When he completely failed
00:12:00What if you were that guy
00:12:01Who got your ass handed to you
00:12:02By the Master Chief
00:12:03What would your bosses
00:12:04Think of you?
00:12:06And that's really the genesis
00:12:07Of the Arbiter
00:12:08It was Harrison
00:12:10I had the
00:12:10Well
00:12:11Either good or bad idea
00:12:13Depending on how you look at it
00:12:14To suggest
00:12:15What if you actually played
00:12:16As
00:12:18This guy
00:12:18Wouldn't that be pretty cool
00:12:19If you could put yourself
00:12:20In his
00:12:21Horseshoe
00:12:22Boots
00:12:23And walk around
00:12:24With his mandible jaws
00:12:25And talk to other Covenant
00:12:26And
00:12:26Really get the other side
00:12:28Of his story
00:12:35When they switch the story around
00:12:36And you're playing as the Arbiter
00:12:37It
00:12:38You were like
00:12:39Whoa
00:12:40What would you have
00:12:41Your Arbiter do?
00:12:43You know
00:12:43It all of a sudden
00:12:44Just took everything you knew
00:12:45And
00:12:46Mixed it all up
00:12:47Oracle
00:12:48What is Halo's purpose?
00:12:51Collectively
00:12:51The seven?
00:12:53Wrong
00:12:53Not another word
00:12:55Please
00:12:57It was an interesting way
00:12:59To
00:12:59To innovate on
00:13:01The interactive storytelling
00:13:02We are the arm of the prophets
00:13:04And you are the blade
00:13:06Ultimately
00:13:07That turned out
00:13:08To be a lot more
00:13:09Work
00:13:10And made us make
00:13:11Some hard choices
00:13:12At the end
00:13:14We're going to
00:13:16Go to Earth
00:13:17Go into the prophet
00:13:18Of truth ship
00:13:19Rescue Cortana
00:13:21Do battle with the grave mind
00:13:22And button everything up
00:13:25It was extremely challenging
00:13:26To wrap all those different
00:13:28You know
00:13:29Ambitious angles
00:13:30Into one nice
00:13:31Smooth
00:13:32Polished
00:13:32Product
00:13:33And
00:13:35Especially at the end
00:13:36For the campaign
00:13:37It just
00:13:38There wasn't enough runway
00:13:39To land
00:13:40What we
00:13:40What we really wanted to land
00:13:45So it was not until 2002
00:13:47A good probably six months
00:13:49After we had finished the music
00:13:51I finally was called into a meeting room
00:13:53At Microsoft
00:13:54And sitting around a table
00:13:56With all these guys
00:13:57But there was one guy in the room
00:13:58Who was
00:13:59Had dreadlocks
00:14:01And like a white beret
00:14:02And a white suit
00:14:03And his name is Niall Rogers
00:14:05I think he was working with
00:14:06Maroon 5
00:14:08In New York
00:14:09And they wouldn't stay
00:14:11In the studio with him
00:14:12They kept taking breaks
00:14:13And he found out
00:14:14They were taking breaks
00:14:15And wasting time
00:14:16Playing Halo
00:14:17This new game
00:14:18And they said
00:14:19Yeah Niall
00:14:19You gotta see this game
00:14:20It's so cool
00:14:21And Niall looks at him playing
00:14:22And he goes
00:14:23Yeah but what's that music?
00:14:25He was the first guy
00:14:27Who said
00:14:27I want to have a company
00:14:30That releases
00:14:32Game soundtracks
00:14:32And he wanted Halo
00:14:34To be the first one
00:14:35I remember
00:14:37Loving that soundtrack
00:14:38So much
00:14:38That I bought the soundtrack
00:14:40To a video game
00:14:41Who does that?
00:14:42Nobody does that
00:14:43Nobody goes like
00:14:43Oh I want to hear
00:14:44The MIDI music
00:14:45From old PC games
00:14:47No
00:14:48Halo was so iconic
00:14:50That you could release
00:14:50A soundtrack
00:14:51And I would buy it
00:14:52And I would listen to it
00:14:53In my car
00:14:55While not getting laid
00:14:56Ever
00:14:57I love that song
00:14:59And when the
00:14:59Da da da da
00:15:00Da da da da
00:15:02The moment that kicks in
00:15:03You're like
00:15:03Yes let's go
00:15:04You know that score
00:15:06Is just
00:15:06You hear that
00:15:07And just immediately
00:15:08You're there
00:15:09You're in Master Chief's helmet
00:15:10And you're living it
00:15:12It immersed you
00:15:13And you felt like
00:15:14You were put in this world
00:15:16And that's why
00:15:17There's such an emotional connection
00:15:19That music became your music
00:15:21I believe it's something like
00:15:44No that's not it
00:15:48And the Halo 2 one's got the rocking
00:15:50Like
00:15:53Yeah that's
00:15:55I was dating a girl at the time
00:15:57And whenever she heard
00:15:57The Halo theme
00:15:58I could hear
00:15:58Every door in my house slam
00:16:01Because she knew I was going to be
00:16:03Playing Halo for four hours
00:16:05As good as I like Halo 1's soundtrack
00:16:08He came back after the success of Halo 1
00:16:11And he said
00:16:11Marty for Halo 2
00:16:12You know I can get you anybody you want
00:16:14I'll get you
00:16:15Steve Vai
00:16:15Jeff Beck
00:16:16I can get you pink
00:16:17You know
00:16:18A pink?
00:16:19What?
00:16:20Well I hadn't really thought about guitar per se
00:16:24And yet
00:16:26But Steve Vai or Jeff Beck
00:16:29Sure
00:16:29Are you kidding?
00:16:36There's one other guitar player
00:16:37Who was a huge fan of Halo
00:16:39And went outside of his agent
00:16:42He went outside of everybody else
00:16:43We didn't even bring it through Microsoft
00:16:45I never got a contractual written permission
00:16:48To work with him
00:16:49And that's John Mayer
00:16:51John Mayer plays guitar
00:16:54On two very distinct pieces in Halo
00:16:56And you hear it on the soundtrack
00:16:57But I never revealed that it was him
00:17:00Because he didn't want his agent to yell at him
00:17:02He just wanted to be able to tell his friends
00:17:04Yeah that's me playing on Halo 2
00:17:10Halo is one of the few games
00:17:11Where we still have people playing the 10 year old game
00:17:14And Halo was I think
00:17:16Really special
00:17:17Especially in the United States
00:17:19As far as how it introduced a lot of people
00:17:22To multiplayer gaming
00:17:23And with the first Halo
00:17:24It was a very social experience
00:17:26Physically carrying your Xbox
00:17:27Someone's house
00:17:28Carrying TVs
00:17:30Heavy CRT TVs back in the day
00:17:32Pre-Halo and Halo 2
00:17:35You had to make do with what you had
00:17:37It was like
00:17:38Okay we've got these modems
00:17:39Which are tin cans and strings
00:17:41Now we need to connect them
00:17:43To somehow communicate with each other
00:17:45And then play this game against each other
00:17:46Now we need a way to talk to each other
00:17:49To set up the play date
00:17:50So that we can murder each other
00:17:52And it was all these disparate technologies
00:17:55And forums and modems and drivers
00:17:58And operating systems
00:17:59And it was a delicate nerd dance
00:18:01You would have to do a 25 minute geek ballet
00:18:03Just to get a game synced up
00:18:05To be able to play with someone else
00:18:07Then when Halo 2 came along
00:18:09It was really as easy as pushing a button
00:18:11Seeing your friends
00:18:12And saying
00:18:12Okay I'm going to shoot you now
00:18:14With Halo 2 it changed radically
00:18:17Because we were able to put people together
00:18:20Without having them in the same room
00:18:21We used Xbox Live obviously
00:18:24Introducing the next arena
00:18:27Butt kicking
00:18:28Just went global
00:18:33Xbox Live is here
00:18:36Max Holberman who designed a lot of those systems
00:18:39Had a really simple philosophy
00:18:40Which was to try and recreate
00:18:42The fun aspects of being together
00:18:44In that basement with those TVs
00:18:46But do it online
00:18:47And I think that's one of the reasons
00:18:49Why it was so successful
00:18:50Because it kept the social
00:18:52Cultural aspect of that connection
00:18:53And didn't really make it all about technology
00:18:56It made it all about fun and connecting
00:18:57And just sort of being around your friends
00:19:00I was in a meeting
00:19:01And they were explaining it to me
00:19:02And I was like
00:19:02Wait a minute
00:19:02What?
00:19:03You're going to do what?
00:19:05You're going to have people on a virtual couch
00:19:06And we don't need to be with each other?
00:19:09Wow
00:19:09I said that sounds cool
00:19:11And then of course it came out
00:19:12And it was cool
00:19:13It just felt great
00:19:15To kill people around the world
00:19:17In a video game
00:19:19Legitimately
00:19:19I mean
00:19:20You were used to doing it on your couch
00:19:22And I always said
00:19:23When I played games
00:19:24If I can't kill something
00:19:25I don't really have a desire to play it
00:19:26That's just the way
00:19:27I just love FPSs
00:19:28It comes down to the last kill
00:19:30And you get this voice
00:19:31Like double kill
00:19:32I mean it was just like
00:19:33You know
00:19:34Killing spree
00:19:35And you were like
00:19:35It just
00:19:36You got so emotional about it
00:19:38And you strove to get those
00:19:40Those small moments of awesomeness
00:19:43Not only was it a way to
00:19:44Kind of hang out with your friends
00:19:45Whether in person or online
00:19:47But it was also like
00:19:48A legitimate form of competition
00:19:49Right?
00:19:50If you're in school
00:19:51It was a question of
00:19:52What level is that guy in Halo 2?
00:19:54You know
00:19:54How good is he?
00:19:54It was fun
00:19:56The end of the day
00:19:57It was entertaining
00:19:59It was just so fun
00:20:00The histories between Halo and Xbox Live
00:20:03I don't think you can
00:20:04You really separate the two
00:20:05Even today
00:20:06In terms of the stuff
00:20:07That we're trying to do with Halo 5
00:20:09And innovating on Xbox Live
00:20:10There's a long history there
00:20:11But we all knew
00:20:12That when Halo finally came to Xbox Live
00:20:15That would be the time
00:20:16Like that would define
00:20:18The success or failure of Xbox Live
00:20:21You know
00:20:22I think if you're
00:20:22If you're a game player
00:20:24Who hasn't tried Halo
00:20:25And you're playing things like
00:20:26Battlefield and Call of Duty
00:20:27There are a lot of things
00:20:28That you take for granted
00:20:29When you start up a game
00:20:31You'll go in a matchmaking playlist
00:20:34You'll be matched with players
00:20:35With the same skill
00:20:36And the same interests obviously
00:20:38They want to play the same game mode
00:20:40As you do
00:20:42There's you know
00:20:42An even number of players
00:20:43That are evenly matched
00:20:45So that each game is fun
00:20:46Each game is close
00:20:47And each game is exciting
00:20:49So when you finish a game
00:20:50You either won or you lost
00:20:52Not by a huge margin
00:20:53Which made it fun
00:20:54Made it challenging
00:20:55But I gotta give credit to Max for that
00:20:58That was his baby
00:20:59And that's probably his biggest impact
00:21:01On the industry today
00:21:02As he's kind of changed the way
00:21:04That we play console games online
00:21:06In a few hours
00:21:07One of the most eagerly awaited video games
00:21:09Finally goes on sale
00:21:10Preparing to rewrite retail history
00:21:12Video game is expected to have
00:21:14Bigger first day revenues
00:21:16Than any movie
00:21:17Has ever had an opening day
00:21:18At the box office
00:21:19Biggest retail launch
00:21:20In entertainment history
00:21:21You know dozens of grown men
00:21:23And probably about three women
00:21:25Have crawled out of their parents' basements tonight
00:21:27To be first in line
00:21:27By the new video game
00:21:28Halo 2
00:21:29Video gamers across the country
00:21:31Are anxiously awaiting
00:21:32The midnight release
00:21:33Of a game called Halo 2
00:21:3445 minutes and counting
00:21:36For Halo 2 to go on sale
00:21:38The line right now
00:21:38Is probably about 100 yards
00:21:40It is the most anticipated game
00:21:42In entertainment history
00:21:49Well if you're an Xbox gamer
00:21:52There's a good chance
00:21:52You're pretty tired right now
00:21:54Halo 2 sold 2.4 million units
00:21:59In 24 hours
00:22:02Now I understand
00:22:03There's a few more states
00:22:04To put in the red and blue columns
00:22:05We're gonna go back to the map
00:22:06And rob Corddry
00:22:07Rob looking at this
00:22:10Yeah!
00:22:11Yeah!
00:22:12Suck it!
00:22:13Suck it!
00:22:13Where's your alien plasma rifle now bitch?
00:22:16Wow!
00:22:16Wow!
00:22:17Oh!
00:22:18Are you playing Halo?
00:22:20No?
00:22:21The anticipation around that
00:22:23You know coming
00:22:25That Halo 2 was gonna land
00:22:27I think was just a kind of magical moment
00:22:31Bungie created something spectacular
00:22:33Right?
00:22:34And I mean I think that
00:22:35The game Bungie created
00:22:37Is why 343 exists today
00:22:39And why many of the fans are here
00:22:42So 343 was created
00:22:44To kind of take that universe
00:22:46And carry it forward
00:22:48There was never any question
00:22:49As to whether we should do
00:22:50A Halo 2 anniversary
00:22:51In terms of
00:22:52You know
00:22:53I think we all kind of had
00:22:54That very romantic notion
00:22:55Of going back to Halo 2
00:22:57And Halo 2 for a lot of people
00:22:59Is that sort of
00:23:01Perfect snapshot in time
00:23:03That perfect moment
00:23:04And so there was always
00:23:05A really sort of
00:23:06Rising demand for it
00:23:07This is the 10th anniversary
00:23:08This is the right time to do it
00:23:12This is about Master Chief's journey
00:23:15His past and his future
00:23:19Questioning authority
00:23:20And searching for the truth
00:23:22The Halo franchise
00:23:23Is the reason Xbox is here today
00:23:25As many of you know
00:23:26November marks the 10 year anniversary
00:23:29Of Halo 2
00:23:30And I am excited to tell you
00:23:32That Halo 2
00:23:33Is getting the full
00:23:34Anniversary treatment
00:23:36Halo 2's multiplayer
00:23:37Was special
00:23:38For a lot of reasons
00:23:39And Halo 2 anniversary
00:23:41Will contain
00:23:42The original Halo 2 multiplayer
00:23:45Exactly as it shipped
00:23:4710 years ago
00:23:48When we were thinking
00:23:49About anything before the anniversary
00:23:50The game has to be
00:23:51Exactly the same
00:23:51You know
00:23:52It has to
00:23:52Some of the
00:23:53Things that people loved
00:23:54About Halo 2
00:23:56Were the glitches
00:23:57And those were all
00:23:58You know
00:23:59In
00:23:59So for us
00:24:00It's how do you keep
00:24:01The gameplay
00:24:01The same
00:24:02But raise the graphical fidelity
00:24:05And then
00:24:05How do you just have
00:24:06New ways to play
00:24:09The old game
00:24:10It's the same game
00:24:11But new ways to play that game
00:24:12And so I think
00:24:12Kind of mixing that new
00:24:13With that old
00:24:14Is hopefully something
00:24:15That will be refreshing
00:24:16To new and old fans
00:24:25So for Halo 2 anniversary
00:24:27Saber is really focusing
00:24:28On the campaign
00:24:29On remastering
00:24:31All the graphics
00:24:31And making everything
00:24:32Look wonderful
00:24:33On the Xbox One
00:24:34They're also
00:24:34Because they're so tech savvy
00:24:36Really helping to push
00:24:37Bring up the resolution
00:24:39As high as possible
00:24:40And hit that 60 frames per second
00:24:41Mark that we're stretching
00:24:42To hit
00:24:43Doing an HD remake
00:24:44To those older
00:24:45Halo 1, Halo 2 games
00:24:47Makes a lot of sense
00:24:48Because those games
00:24:50They stand the test of time
00:24:52The storytelling component
00:24:54Of those games
00:24:55Is great
00:24:55The gameplay experience
00:24:57Is great
00:24:57So it makes a lot of sense
00:24:59To bring it to
00:25:01The new hardware
00:25:01People remember Halo 2
00:25:03As a beautiful looking game
00:25:05And so our objective
00:25:06Really is to let people
00:25:07Feel that the game
00:25:09They're playing now
00:25:09Is the exact experience
00:25:11That they played
00:25:12Ten years ago
00:25:12Only when they switch back
00:25:14Will they realize
00:25:15The tricks their mind
00:25:16Was playing on them
00:25:17Because of the
00:25:18Elapse of ten years
00:25:20Of time
00:25:20There's something
00:25:21That's just so instinctual
00:25:22About how that game
00:25:23Feels and plays to you
00:25:25That I don't think
00:25:25It's something
00:25:26That really
00:25:27That you can identify
00:25:29Directly
00:25:29So we've always been
00:25:31Very very concerned
00:25:32With maintaining
00:25:33That gameplay
00:25:33To just feel authentic
00:25:34And that authenticity
00:25:36Is something
00:25:37We didn't want to lose
00:25:38And something we know
00:25:38That it's very easy
00:25:40To just miss
00:25:41That back and forth switch
00:25:44Was something that
00:25:46Came about
00:25:48Primarily because
00:25:49Dan Ayub and I
00:25:49Were going back and forth
00:25:50During the original Halo
00:25:51About how we really
00:25:53Wanted to maintain
00:25:53That gameplay
00:25:54And we really wanted
00:25:55To show people
00:25:56Look
00:25:56Look what we've done
00:25:58Right
00:25:58And so
00:25:59Now it just works
00:26:00It works seamlessly
00:26:01And you can just
00:26:02See it yourself in the game
00:26:03It's very cool
00:26:03In addition
00:26:04You know
00:26:05Just like we did
00:26:06With Halo 1 anniversary
00:26:07We want to add
00:26:08Different elements
00:26:09Different things
00:26:09That the fans can
00:26:11You know
00:26:11Not only just relive
00:26:13How the game played
00:26:14And sort of
00:26:16Keep that same
00:26:19Nostalgic experience alive
00:26:20But we want to add
00:26:21Different elements to it
00:26:22So they can change it up too
00:26:23So skulls
00:26:24Is what we do
00:26:25In the Halo franchise
00:26:26And these are things
00:26:26That are hidden
00:26:27Throughout the
00:26:28Throughout the levels
00:26:29And once you find
00:26:29The skull
00:26:30You can turn it on
00:26:31And once it's turned on
00:26:32You can change the gameplay
00:26:33Some of those might mean
00:26:35Oh if you turn
00:26:37The grunt
00:26:38Birthday party skull on
00:26:39Anytime you headshot
00:26:40A grunt
00:26:40It sounds
00:26:41The sound of laughter
00:26:42From children
00:26:43And confetti
00:26:43Pugs out of the grunt
00:26:45Things like that
00:26:46Are added all throughout
00:26:47The game
00:26:47And Saber is handling
00:26:49All that work
00:26:50So they've been
00:26:51A huge asset to us
00:26:52And they're really
00:26:53Remastering the game
00:26:54Making it look great
00:27:03When we started Halo 2
00:27:05And you know
00:27:05We got greenlit
00:27:06And we had our conversations
00:27:07With Bonnie and Phil
00:27:08And all that stuff
00:27:09And they're like
00:27:09Yeah we want to do this
00:27:10My first call
00:27:11Was to Max Oberman
00:27:11I walked out of that
00:27:12Meeting room with Bonnie
00:27:14Walked to my desk
00:27:15And called Max
00:27:15And said Max
00:27:16This is happening
00:27:16We're doing it
00:27:17Had some talks
00:27:18With Dan Ayub
00:27:19At Microsoft
00:27:19And he threw out
00:27:21The idea of doing
00:27:21Halo 2 anniversary
00:27:22To which I was like
00:27:24Yeah awesome
00:27:25That'd be fun
00:27:25So I was super excited
00:27:27But even committing
00:27:29To doing six maps
00:27:30For Halo 2 anniversary
00:27:31Was a huge commitment
00:27:33And it really
00:27:34Sort of put a lot of
00:27:35Pressure on the team
00:27:36I think if you just
00:27:37Asked our producers
00:27:38The safe bet was four
00:27:39We got started on that
00:27:41Super excited
00:27:42And then immediately
00:27:43We had some very
00:27:44Difficult discussions
00:27:45All right
00:27:46We only get six maps
00:27:47Which ones are we
00:27:49Going to make
00:27:49We needed to take it
00:27:50Down from 23 or 25
00:27:52Down to 12
00:27:53Now we had to
00:27:53Take it down to six
00:27:54And there were a lot
00:27:55Of really tough discussions
00:27:57Eventually the decision
00:27:58Was let's have
00:27:59Too small
00:27:59Too medium
00:28:00And too large
00:28:02Turned out some
00:28:02Of the really small maps
00:28:03Were some of the best maps
00:28:04Maps like
00:28:06Lockout
00:28:06Top of the list
00:28:07Right
00:28:07Were just kind of
00:28:08A no brainer
00:28:09Those were really easy
00:28:10Every single map
00:28:11Seems to outdo itself
00:28:14Ascension is
00:28:16It's incredible to me
00:28:17One of the best skyboxes
00:28:19I think I've ever seen
00:28:20In any halo map
00:28:21And you can go up
00:28:22And just stand on the edge
00:28:23And sort of look out
00:28:24This halo ring
00:28:25And just see all this
00:28:26Movement out there
00:28:27Just feels so lifelike
00:28:29I've actually just
00:28:29Jumped off the edge
00:28:30And you know
00:28:31Just to my death
00:28:32And it just felt like
00:28:33It was falling
00:28:34It is really cool
00:28:35So the map's
00:28:37Really coming to life
00:28:39On Ascension
00:28:40Adding that bubble shield
00:28:41In the middle
00:28:42Is very deliberate
00:28:43Because we want
00:28:45More variety
00:28:45Than the map
00:28:46Just turning into
00:28:47A sniper fest
00:28:48And that shield
00:28:50Adds that variety
00:28:51It gives you moments
00:28:51Where close range
00:28:53Combat matters
00:28:53And where you have
00:28:54Some more cover
00:28:55And some more protection
00:28:56And that sort of thing
00:28:57But how do you do that
00:28:58In a way that doesn't
00:28:59Fundamentally break
00:29:00What works
00:29:01And doesn't make it
00:29:02So it isn't any fun
00:29:03For snipers on the map
00:29:04For instance
00:29:05So I think we
00:29:06We hit the nail
00:29:07On the head
00:29:08With that one
00:29:10There's more dynamic
00:29:11Elements in maps
00:29:12There are more
00:29:12Interactive elements
00:29:13You're able to change
00:29:14The way the flow
00:29:15And the nature
00:29:16Of the map works
00:29:17There's certain things
00:29:18You can shoot
00:29:19For example
00:29:19That will close gates
00:29:21Or change the path
00:29:22Through the level
00:29:23And those things
00:29:24Are going to add
00:29:25A fair amount
00:29:25Of variety
00:29:26To the experience
00:29:28So what you guys
00:29:28Are seeing here
00:29:29Is a piece of concept
00:29:31From a map
00:29:31We haven't announced yet
00:29:32Any ideas
00:29:33What map
00:29:34Yeah
00:29:34Has anyone guessed it yet?
00:29:36What?
00:29:37Yell it if you know it
00:29:38Come on
00:29:39I can't hear you
00:29:40That's right guys
00:29:41Coag is back
00:29:57We showed off
00:29:58What turned out
00:29:59To be almost
00:29:59Everybody's
00:30:00Favorite announcement
00:30:01Which was
00:30:02The gun goose
00:30:02That was kind of fun
00:30:04We knew we'd have
00:30:05A good reception
00:30:06But not
00:30:07We didn't anticipate
00:30:08Quite how positive
00:30:09The reception would be
00:30:10What's better than a mongoose?
00:30:15A mongoose with guns
00:30:18Nice
00:30:18Yeah
00:30:22It's just absolute home run
00:30:23It's probably some
00:30:24Of the best fun
00:30:25I've ever had in Halo
00:30:26And that's a pretty
00:30:26Major statement
00:30:27Because I've had
00:30:27A lot of fun in Halo
00:30:28The art treatment
00:30:30And everything that
00:30:31Max and his team
00:30:32At Certain Affinity
00:30:32Have been doing
00:30:33Has really been true
00:30:34To the original
00:30:35Just keeping it updated
00:30:36And adding all this
00:30:37You know
00:30:38Cool new features
00:30:39And awesome stuff
00:30:40Skyboxes
00:30:41They knew that
00:30:42It was great
00:30:42When it launched
00:30:43Ten years ago
00:30:44They didn't want
00:30:44To change that
00:30:52There's generally
00:30:53A lot of work
00:30:54Involved with
00:30:55An anniversary edition
00:30:56There's a lot of people
00:30:58Who are attached
00:30:58To the sound of Halo
00:30:59Myself included
00:31:01I really like
00:31:02The sounds that they
00:31:03Did in the original
00:31:03But I feel like
00:31:04They can be
00:31:05Touched up
00:31:05And modernized
00:31:06And brought into
00:31:08Higher fidelity
00:31:09For the game environment
00:31:11I think some of the
00:31:12Best challenge
00:31:12I have found in this
00:31:13Is knowing that the fans
00:31:15Are so big on this game
00:31:17And in trying to find
00:31:19New tone and new texture
00:31:20But still simulate
00:31:22The old feel
00:31:51I'm going through a bit of a detective process
00:31:52And it sounds really big
00:31:53It's got good energy
00:31:54Missing the metal
00:31:55So then we'll find
00:31:56The right metallic tone
00:31:58And then we'll
00:31:59Reperform it the same way
00:32:00With the new flavor
00:32:01And we play those two together
00:32:03It's like
00:32:03All right
00:32:03Sounding big
00:32:04Sounding metallic
00:32:05What's missing now
00:32:06Some body movement
00:32:07Now we've got to find
00:32:08A new texture
00:32:09Maybe it's leather
00:32:10Maybe it's skin
00:32:10And then that would be
00:32:12Like a third layer
00:32:12And then continue to play it
00:32:15Until we start hearing
00:32:16All of the different layers
00:32:18And that's
00:32:19So we could end up
00:32:20With six or eight
00:32:20Different sounds
00:32:21For one movement
00:32:22In a character
00:32:23So one of the cool things
00:32:24That we ended up recording
00:32:25This time around
00:32:26Which is totally experimental
00:32:27Were tuning forks
00:32:28And we thought that
00:32:29Would go really well
00:32:30With the energy sword
00:32:31But it needed a little bit more
00:32:33The energy sword is a sleek
00:32:34Sort of elegant weapon
00:32:35But it's also
00:32:36A killing machine
00:32:37So we actually bought
00:32:39Some dry ice
00:32:39And we were thinking
00:32:40Hey what might sound good
00:32:42With this dry ice
00:32:42And we just started
00:32:43Randomly dropping objects on it
00:32:44What we really thought
00:32:46Was cool
00:32:47Was when we dropped
00:32:47Ball bearings on it
00:32:48So we ended up
00:32:50Using the ball bearings
00:32:51On the dry ice
00:32:52And the sizzling
00:32:52And the burning
00:32:54And the screaming
00:32:55And what we did
00:32:56Is we had the engineer room
00:32:57Actually feed that back to us
00:32:59Through a loudspeaker
00:33:00In the Foley room
00:33:01And we then set up
00:33:03Set up a microphone
00:33:04And we actually
00:33:05Made the sword motion
00:33:06From the game
00:33:07And that allowed us
00:33:08To capture
00:33:08More of a natural
00:33:10And sort of unique sound
00:33:15Here is
00:33:17What shipped in the game
00:33:19Ten years ago
00:33:24We wanted something
00:33:25With a little more body
00:33:26We wanted something
00:33:27With a little more musicality
00:33:29And we wanted something
00:33:30With more power
00:33:31Here is kind of the direction
00:33:32We are going now
00:33:41We decided to go out
00:33:42And capture new source material
00:33:43This time around
00:33:44Obviously you can't go out
00:33:46And record a battle rifle
00:33:47You can go out
00:33:48And record things
00:33:49That are similar to it
00:33:50But what we wanted to do
00:33:51Is kind of
00:33:52Choose weapons
00:33:53That had unique characteristics
00:33:55So for example
00:33:56The Thompson machine gun
00:33:57It's got a unique
00:33:59Clack clack clack clack
00:34:00Sort of sound to it
00:34:01And that's a very unique
00:34:02Characteristic that we wanted
00:34:03To kind of carry over
00:34:04Into some of the newer weapons
00:34:05Each gun had
00:34:07Kind of felt different
00:34:07The M1 Garand
00:34:09Obviously is the big
00:34:10Beastly 30-06
00:34:12Large caliber gun
00:34:13Really packs a punch
00:34:14You can really feel it
00:34:15In your chest
00:34:16And then there's
00:34:17The silent submachine gun
00:34:18The MP5
00:34:19That really has a unique
00:34:20Sort of
00:34:21Cthwack sound
00:34:22You let it fly
00:34:23And then you hear
00:34:24The thump down range
00:34:25It's pretty cool
00:34:28My personal shotgun
00:34:29Is the shotgun
00:34:31In Halo 2 Anniversary
00:34:32I completely forgot about that
00:34:34But that was a fun day
00:34:48The terminal started in Halo 3
00:34:50They had little easter eggs
00:34:51Where if you found
00:34:52A little datapad
00:34:53It would have
00:34:54A text document
00:34:55That you could read
00:34:56To get deeper into the story
00:34:57And then they expanded that
00:34:58With Halo 3 ODST
00:34:59But Halo 1 Anniversary
00:35:02Was when we
00:35:03Really stepped it up
00:35:04Hired the sequence group
00:35:06To come in
00:35:06Do all the
00:35:07Painterly style terminals
00:35:09So that was a new addition
00:35:10For Halo 1 Anniversary
00:35:11And then we decided
00:35:12To do it again
00:35:12In Halo 2
00:35:13Are you ready, reclaimer?
00:35:15This is how my story begins
00:35:16We kind of sized up
00:35:17Like, okay
00:35:17So what are the things
00:35:18That fans have always
00:35:20Wanted to know more about
00:35:22It's this relationship
00:35:23Between the Prophets
00:35:24And the Elites
00:35:26This situation
00:35:27In the Covenant
00:35:28Kind of the big lie
00:35:29Really
00:35:29That the Prophets
00:35:30Have held over
00:35:31The rest of the Covenant
00:35:32For who knows how long
00:35:34That leads to
00:35:36The events of Halo 2
00:35:37The breaking of the Covenant
00:35:38The war between the Elites
00:35:39And the Brutes
00:35:40And the Prophets
00:35:41And how
00:35:42What role does the Arbiter
00:35:43Play in all of this
00:35:45So that's a question
00:35:45Fans have been asking
00:35:46For a long time
00:35:47Thinking towards the future
00:35:49What do we think
00:35:50Fans will want to know
00:35:51More about
00:35:52You know
00:35:52A year or two from now
00:35:54Is we're pretty sure
00:35:55They're going to want to know
00:35:55A lot more about
00:35:56Spartan Locke
00:35:57Or Agent Locke
00:35:58As we meet him
00:36:15The Terminals form a connective tissue
00:36:17For this world
00:36:18And we're getting a chance
00:36:20Again to realize this
00:36:21In a much more vibrant
00:36:24Affected
00:36:24Pointed way
00:36:26That users would appreciate
00:36:28A lot of our stories
00:36:30Within the Halo Terminals
00:36:31Are additional narrative
00:36:32They're back story
00:36:33And a lot of it
00:36:34Is kind of exploration
00:36:35Even further than
00:36:36Some of the novels
00:36:37And so we're saying
00:36:38Okay well this is one shot
00:36:39Where you know
00:36:40Post the Halo ring exploding
00:36:42And you know
00:36:42Does this tie into
00:36:44This novel
00:36:45And does this make sense
00:36:46For this one two second shot
00:36:47Because it's got to fit
00:36:48The entire Halo universe
00:36:49And that's a big challenge
00:36:51Halo has had
00:36:53A very definitive style
00:36:55From day one
00:36:55And it's evolving over time
00:36:57And it keeps growing
00:36:58And growing
00:36:58But one of the things
00:36:59That's unique
00:37:00About what Sequence
00:37:01Brings to it
00:37:02Is that it has
00:37:03Its own style
00:37:04It's much more
00:37:05Of a painterly look to it
00:37:07It makes it feel like
00:37:08It's a graphic piece
00:37:09Versus a 3D piece
00:37:11To see what Sequence
00:37:13Has done from a visual
00:37:14Standpoint is just
00:37:15It's breathtaking
00:37:15The Terminals that I worked on
00:37:17They did some amazing stuff
00:37:18With high charities
00:37:19Interiors
00:37:20They did some incredible stuff
00:37:22With worlds that we
00:37:24Haven't talked about yet
00:37:25And I think fans are really
00:37:26Really going to get a kick
00:37:27Out of that
00:37:34When we were doing the voice acting
00:37:35For all the Terminals
00:37:37We had people in Redmond
00:37:38On Skype
00:37:39Listening in to the session
00:37:41In LA
00:37:41With the guys from Vancouver
00:37:43You know like
00:37:44All these pieces
00:37:44Have to come together
00:37:45It's amazing to get
00:37:46To see the voice talent
00:37:48Because obviously
00:37:48They're such an integral part
00:37:50To what we do
00:37:51With the Terminals
00:37:51To be able to go to the studio
00:37:53And actually see them perform
00:37:55Is amazing
00:37:56Because we're able to
00:37:57Sort of show them
00:37:58The rough drawings
00:37:59And the animatics
00:38:00And they're able to
00:38:01Sort of feed off
00:38:02Our work as well
00:38:02So to be able to go down
00:38:04And see what they do
00:38:05And really appreciate
00:38:06And also contribute
00:38:07It's great to be able
00:38:08To be involved in that
00:38:10I really am glad
00:38:11That they're revisiting it
00:38:12Sort of giving it
00:38:14New life
00:38:14I mean take a 10 year old game
00:38:16And then actually tie it
00:38:18Into the future
00:38:19Of the Halo franchise
00:38:20As well
00:38:20That's really cool
00:38:21Honestly that's one
00:38:22Of the coolest things
00:38:23That I think we did
00:38:24During these sessions
00:38:25Everybody here
00:38:26Just lit up
00:38:27It was like
00:38:28Oh my god
00:38:28This is the holy grail
00:38:30This is you know
00:38:31This is Halo
00:38:32You know this is huge
00:38:35My name is Keith David
00:38:37And I play
00:38:38The Arbiter
00:38:41When it came up
00:38:42And they were looking
00:38:43For you know
00:38:45This character
00:38:46The Arbiter
00:38:47And I got the first script
00:38:49And read it
00:38:50I was like
00:38:50Wow I like this guy
00:38:52I like this character
00:38:53And you see what he looks like
00:38:55You know it's like
00:38:55It's very different
00:38:57And you know
00:38:58Through the different
00:39:01Incarnations of the game
00:39:03I love the way it's evolved
00:39:05I love these stories
00:39:07My friend's trust
00:39:08Is not the issue today
00:39:10Spartan Locke
00:39:12It is my trust
00:39:14You must earn
00:39:16You are a hunter
00:39:18Yes
00:39:18A seeker of things
00:39:21And now you hunt
00:39:23Other Spartans
00:39:24Getting to meet
00:39:25Somebody like Keith David
00:39:26You know somebody
00:39:27A character
00:39:27I know him through
00:39:28His character
00:39:28In the Halo series
00:39:29Really well
00:39:31It is a really cool thing
00:39:32To see that in real life
00:39:34You know
00:39:35Oh this time
00:39:36I'm going to have
00:39:37A Nero Grey
00:39:39Everything he says
00:39:40Is epic
00:39:42We need to be on the other side
00:39:44Of the glass
00:39:44And take this
00:39:46Be the first ears
00:39:47That hear these performances
00:39:48You know
00:39:49And get giddy
00:39:50And excited about it
00:39:51Knowing where it's going to go
00:39:52And knowing what millions
00:39:53Of people are going to get to enjoy
00:39:55It's a huge deal
00:39:56Bringing back Keith David
00:39:57And having the Arbiter
00:39:58And then adding this new character
00:40:00Of Spartan Locke
00:40:02And have this story
00:40:04Be more complete
00:40:05And more connected
00:40:06In the fiction
00:40:07That's an amazing start
00:40:09To a journey
00:40:10That I think Halo fans
00:40:11Are going to be thrilled with
00:40:12A lot of the narrative work
00:40:13We do
00:40:14Is best done
00:40:15With actual
00:40:16VO narrative
00:40:17Storytelling
00:40:18I mean if people watch
00:40:20Something without any audio
00:40:21You realize that
00:40:21It's 50% of what you're doing
00:40:23I mean it's
00:40:23It sets the feeling
00:40:25The tone
00:40:25Before anything else can
00:40:27It's extremely powerful
00:40:28So it's a big part of our work
00:40:30The following is a target profile
00:40:31Of Thel Vadami
00:40:32Supreme Commander
00:40:33Of the Covenant Fleet
00:40:34Of Particular Justice
00:40:35And compiled by
00:40:36Lieutenant Commander Locke
00:40:38I like to think of him
00:40:38As a career soldier
00:40:40In a sense that
00:40:42He has a lot of tools
00:40:43He has a lot of pedigree
00:40:45And he's been in the forces
00:40:47For a long time
00:40:48He's not really old
00:40:50But when you start very young
00:40:51You have a lot to learn
00:40:52So I look at him
00:40:53As a career soldier
00:40:54In a sense that
00:40:54He came out
00:40:55He was a cut above the rest
00:40:56He was really good
00:40:57From the start
00:40:58He's a leader
00:40:59And he's learning on the job
00:41:01But he has the tools
00:41:03And the know-how
00:41:03And the temperament
00:41:04To get it done
00:41:05Bringing back
00:41:06Tim D'Adabo
00:41:07Who's the voice of Guilty Spark
00:41:08I mean it's just
00:41:10An evergreen character
00:41:11And an evergreen sound
00:41:13It's so incredible
00:41:13To kind of hear him come back
00:41:15And just instantly be
00:41:16Guilty Spark
00:41:17Greetings
00:41:18I am 343 Guilty Spark
00:41:20I learned a small amount
00:41:22About your covenant
00:41:23Before that reclaimer
00:41:24Blew up my installation
00:41:25Quite unacceptable
00:41:27And we're rolling
00:41:28When you're ready
00:41:30But Oracle
00:41:31I do not understand
00:41:32We were told
00:41:33The rings are salvation
00:41:35A gateway
00:41:36To paradise
00:41:37That's smoother
00:41:37Communications
00:41:38Shut down all lines
00:41:41To the fleet
00:41:41He's got that presence
00:41:44He's been there
00:41:46He's done that
00:41:47He's not of the earth
00:41:49Though
00:41:49So there's something
00:41:50Otherworldly about him
00:41:52So
00:41:54When he approaches something
00:41:56It's
00:41:57From a very different viewpoint
00:41:59Than mine
00:42:00So it's
00:42:01You know
00:42:02He's just got that
00:42:03That texture
00:42:04Comes from
00:42:05Comes from
00:42:06Knowing
00:42:08And from a lifetime
00:42:09Of experience
00:42:10And of what he's been through
00:42:13The elites are blind
00:42:16Orbiter
00:42:17But I
00:42:18Will make them see
00:42:36So
00:42:36Microsoft came to us
00:42:38And like
00:42:38Okay
00:42:38We have this Halo 2 project
00:42:39Where we basically
00:42:40Have to
00:42:42Recreate those
00:42:44Cinematics
00:42:44That we had before
00:42:46But now we want to
00:42:47Pump it up
00:42:48Up res it
00:42:48But the thing is
00:42:50It's 58 minutes
00:42:51Worth of footage
00:42:51Oh
00:42:52Okay
00:42:54A lot of times
00:42:54People come to us
00:42:55And they say
00:42:56Hey here's our game
00:42:56And here's what's cool about it
00:42:58Make something great
00:42:58And we go off and do it
00:43:00This time
00:43:00The structure was already there
00:43:02We're using the same timing
00:43:03We're using the same story
00:43:04And because that structure
00:43:06Was there
00:43:06It really gives us time
00:43:07To focus on
00:43:08The visual fidelity
00:43:10And the performance
00:43:11Of what was already there
00:43:13So yeah
00:43:14No we could
00:43:14We couldn't say no
00:43:15After it's more
00:43:16Okay now that we've said yes
00:43:18How do we do it
00:43:22So for the choice of actors
00:43:25We actually found
00:43:26The perfect mix
00:43:29Of people that could do
00:43:30Mocap
00:43:31That had the
00:43:32Facial features
00:43:34That we wanted
00:43:35And that were also
00:43:37Great lip syncers
00:43:38So that
00:43:39They could perform
00:43:40Their facial
00:43:41And also be very technical
00:43:43To hit
00:43:44All this
00:44:14Official expression
00:44:15Content of the human face
00:44:17Oddly enough
00:44:17Women do it
00:44:18Twice as fast as men
00:44:19But that piece of your brain
00:44:22Is there to look at faces
00:44:23And understand what's going on
00:44:26And a lot of people
00:44:27Even if you're not artists
00:44:28Will be able to look at
00:44:31CG generated face
00:44:32And say
00:44:33Something wrong with that
00:44:34Something wrong with that
00:44:35I don't understand
00:44:35But it's off-putting
00:44:37They may not be able to tell you
00:44:39What's wrong
00:44:39But they know it's wrong
00:44:41And it makes them feel uncomfortable
00:44:42I think there's some deep
00:44:44Primal monkey brain
00:44:45Sort of thing going on there
00:44:47But this process
00:44:48Kind of circumvents that
00:44:49All those little subtle nuances
00:44:50That are really hard to put in there
00:44:52By hand
00:44:53If you're an animator
00:44:56Kind of come for free
00:44:57Because we're capturing
00:44:58Everything
00:44:59All those little things are there
00:45:01The computer doesn't miss it
00:45:02Even if we did
00:45:04Playing Cortana was really unique
00:45:06Because there's
00:45:08You know
00:45:09In this particular version
00:45:10That we're doing
00:45:11And using the MOVA
00:45:12You're in such a small space
00:45:15To work with
00:45:16And as an actor
00:45:16It was really fun
00:45:17And challenging
00:45:18You know
00:45:19Creating this new character
00:45:20But having to match a voice
00:45:22That's already there
00:45:23And making sure that
00:45:25I gave the performance
00:45:26That you want
00:45:27That matched
00:45:28Not only the mocap
00:45:29But then going back in
00:45:31And matching it
00:45:31With your actual movement
00:45:33On your face
00:45:34And you can move this much
00:45:36And then there's
00:45:37The action sequence
00:45:38Which was nuts
00:45:40Because it was literally
00:45:42Frank being like
00:45:44You jump
00:45:44You run, run, run, run
00:45:46Run, run, run, run
00:45:46You fall
00:45:47I land
00:45:49Look up
00:45:50Oh no
00:45:52See the arm
00:45:52Go, go, go, go
00:45:54Get it
00:45:56Buzzers, buzzers, buzzers
00:45:57Look around
00:45:58Like
00:45:58It was that kind of thing
00:46:00And you're doing it all
00:46:01Just with this kind of movement
00:46:03With your head
00:46:04Because you can't do
00:46:05Any more than that
00:46:06We got to those
00:46:07Really funny moments
00:46:08Where the comments
00:46:09Would be like
00:46:09Could you run more
00:46:11But not move
00:46:11It was really funny
00:46:13One of the great things
00:46:15About games is
00:46:15You can play multiple roles
00:46:17In the same production
00:46:19So being the Arbiter
00:46:20And being Johnson
00:46:21There are actually scenes
00:46:22Where I'm fighting myself
00:46:22So that's actually new
00:46:24Very cool
00:46:24And it was a lot of fun
00:46:25To figure out
00:46:26How to portray that
00:46:27And watch how they figured out
00:46:28What we were going to do
00:46:29To make that work
00:46:31How you doing?
00:46:33The big focus of this
00:46:34Has been working
00:46:36Into the facial performance
00:46:37Of the actors
00:46:38And trying to really translate
00:46:40What they've done
00:46:42Into the CG world
00:46:44The first time
00:46:45That we saw a picture of Johnson
00:46:46We thought it was a real dude
00:46:47We were like
00:46:48Okay, so who's this guy
00:46:49And why are we seeing
00:46:50A picture of him?
00:46:51And then when we started
00:46:52Seeing it moving
00:46:52We were just like
00:46:53Okay, this is animated
00:46:54But it's really good
00:46:56And you start to see
00:46:57The aliens, the covenants
00:46:58You know, the brutes
00:46:59All these different species
00:47:02It's phenomenal
00:47:03The work that they're doing
00:47:04And to have
00:47:05I think it's 56 minutes
00:47:07More or less an hour
00:47:08Of content
00:47:11As a Halo fan
00:47:12That gets my blood
00:47:13That gets my blood going
00:47:24This is going to be a
00:47:25I think the world premiere
00:47:26Of the latest footage
00:47:28That you guys have brought
00:47:30Complete with a lot of explosions
00:47:32So let's roll that
00:47:44In the event of
00:47:45Unexpected shutdown
00:47:46The entire system
00:47:48Will move to standby status
00:47:49All remaining platforms
00:47:51Are now ready
00:47:52For remote activation
00:47:53Remote activation
00:47:54From here
00:47:58I must get inside
00:47:59And mount up on it
00:48:03Your pal
00:48:04Where is he going?
00:48:06Good
00:48:06To finish what we started
00:48:08And this time
00:48:10None of you
00:48:11Will be left
00:48:12To be having
00:48:18They'll make a girl a promise
00:48:21If you know you can't keep it
00:48:42We're at Skywalker Sound
00:48:45And we just concluded
00:48:47A long week
00:48:49Of recording
00:48:51For Halo 2 Anniversary
00:48:52Halo was the reason
00:48:54That I was inspired
00:48:55To get into the video game business
00:48:57Before that
00:48:57I was making records
00:48:58For 15 years
00:48:59And 2001
00:49:01When Halo came out
00:49:02Just changed my whole world
00:49:03That's when I finally saw
00:49:04The world of video games
00:49:06Which is my other love
00:49:07From when I was a kid
00:49:08We're talking pre-Atari 2600 days
00:49:11I'm aging myself
00:49:13Halo just opened up
00:49:14My eyes to a whole new possibility
00:49:16Of this is what I need to be doing
00:49:18Being a composer
00:49:19I have my own sensibilities
00:49:22As far as how I would approach
00:49:23Any given project
00:49:24But since this is a project
00:49:25Where the music's already composed
00:49:27And what we're really doing
00:49:29Is revisiting the material
00:49:31The puzzle becomes
00:49:32How do you honor the material
00:49:34How do you keep it fresh
00:49:36And interesting
00:49:37For a new generation
00:49:39It's a cool process
00:49:40To record and produce
00:49:41Large scale orchestral music
00:49:43I mean let's just take
00:49:44The orchestra for a second
00:49:45I mean you've got 85
00:49:46Very highly trained musicians
00:49:48And you've got Wateru
00:49:49Who's the conductor
00:49:50Who the amount of trust
00:49:52We have in him
00:49:53To emotionally convey
00:49:55And coax out of the players
00:49:57The performance we want
00:49:58Is incredibly high
00:50:00Millions of people love this game
00:50:01And they really
00:50:04You know they're so heavily attached
00:50:06To the game and the music
00:50:07And for me to be able
00:50:09To be a part of it
00:50:10As a conductor
00:50:10To throw in my interpretation
00:50:12And to get the orchestra together
00:50:14And work with this team
00:50:16You know as one of the team members
00:50:17To create this gigantic soundtrack
00:50:20Is just so rewarding
00:50:21He will take our direction
00:50:23And Wateru just has a way
00:50:25Of expressing that back
00:50:27To the orchestra
00:50:28In a language that they
00:50:30Just completely understand
00:50:31I mean on the first anniversary
00:50:32He said something
00:50:33That all of us in the booth
00:50:34Still remember
00:50:35Act as if you are
00:50:36Tucking the baby into bed
00:50:39And suddenly the orchestra
00:50:40Was like oh you know
00:50:42And then they would just
00:50:42Go to play
00:50:43And the notes would just
00:50:44Float up and through the roof
00:50:46And out into the universe
00:50:48This music is not only in the classical style
00:50:52But it also has the elements of rock
00:50:53And also it's very earthy
00:50:56At the same time
00:50:57It's very out there in the space
00:50:59So taking those elements all together
00:51:01Gives me an idea of what expressions are
00:51:04Like phrasings
00:51:05Let's say you know
00:51:06Like this should be like
00:51:07It sounds like an Irish dance
00:51:08This one phrase
00:51:09But it's not really an Irish
00:51:10It's more like a space Irish
00:51:12It's like an alien Irish dance
00:51:14So it's like a whole hybrid sport
00:51:16So I would share that with an orchestra
00:51:17And this orchestra is so wonderful
00:51:19That they get an instant idea
00:51:21Of what we're aiming for
00:51:23I mean if I could put him in my pocket
00:51:25And carry him to all the gigs I do
00:51:27I would
00:51:27He's just
00:51:28He's so expressive
00:51:30And he really gets the best
00:51:32Out of the orchestra
00:51:33And he understands the essence
00:51:36Of what he's supposed to do
00:51:38And finds the best way to bring out
00:51:40What you know
00:51:41Some have characterized
00:51:43As perfection on demand
00:51:45Music from Halo 2
00:51:47Is really attractive
00:51:47From a choral conducting standpoint
00:51:50And a choral singer standpoint
00:51:51Because it's so much of it
00:51:53Is vocally based
00:51:55And one of my favorite styles
00:51:57Is Gregorian chant
00:51:58And you hear that influence
00:51:59Throughout the score
00:52:29So when you take the full breath of the symphony
00:52:32And then you take the full breath of the opera chorus
00:52:35And then the boys choir
00:52:36Just singing perfectly
00:52:38Just that incredible
00:52:39Beautiful sound
00:52:40It's visceral
00:52:41I mean it's an emotional experience
00:52:45You know add to that
00:52:46Something like Steve Vai
00:52:48Which was a fantastic experience
00:52:50We just had a great day
00:52:52Halo 2 introduced Steve Vai
00:52:54Into the mix
00:52:55And that was also another iconic move
00:52:59I mean that was
00:52:59Steve Vai is Steve Vai
00:53:01Right?
00:53:01To those who don't know
00:53:03Like Steve Vai is basically God
00:53:05Like on guitar
00:53:06You know?
00:53:07I don't know if you get any bigger than Steve Vai
00:53:10In terms of like
00:53:11I'm a guitarist
00:53:13And I have my own sound
00:53:14And you can recognize me from a mile away
00:53:16You know?
00:53:17He's a legend
00:53:18Because of my contribution
00:53:20On the last one
00:53:21I received the call
00:53:22And I thought about it
00:53:25And I said
00:53:26Yeah I kind of
00:53:26I enjoyed that
00:53:27And I always wanted to come up to Skywalker
00:53:31And work and record here
00:53:32And it's a gorgeous studio
00:53:33And work with such creative people
00:53:35They really pulled a tremendous team together
00:53:37So it was a pleasure
00:53:39And an honor to be invited back
00:54:02That dude can just go
00:54:06You know?
00:54:06I'm more like a composer
00:54:08I like take my time
00:54:09He's just like
00:54:10I've got a guitar
00:54:11Okay awesomeness is about to happen
00:54:13Now let's pick which version of awesomeness
00:54:15We're going to go with
00:54:16You know?
00:54:16I had no idea what would happen
00:54:18Ten years
00:54:19From the date that
00:54:20I did the original guitar part
00:54:23In the soundtrack for the first Halo 2
00:54:25But I had a blast doing it then
00:54:28My friend Niall Rogers called me
00:54:31He was producing the soundtrack
00:54:33And you know I have two boys
00:54:35And they were really
00:54:36They loved the game
00:54:37When I told them I was playing on
00:54:39The Halo 2 soundtrack
00:54:41They couldn't believe it
00:54:42It was like I finally impressed them
00:54:44You know?
00:54:45So yeah
00:54:46I might quit guitar tomorrow
00:54:50Because of what I saw today
00:55:01There was a lot of energy and momentum
00:55:04Around doing a Halo 2 anniversary
00:55:06I think that with a new platform coming out
00:55:10We kind of went back and forth
00:55:12On really what was the right thing to land
00:55:14On the platform for the first time as Halo
00:55:16And so I think we went back and forth
00:55:18Between as Halo 2 anniversary is a standalone
00:55:23Enough
00:55:24But Dan who runs the publishing org
00:55:27And is a notorious sandbagger
00:55:29Came back with a
00:55:30Well we can do Halo 2 anniversary
00:55:32But we might also be able to do
00:55:35One, three and four
00:55:36And so that obviously became
00:55:39A pretty amazing prospect
00:55:41It really was just a question of whether we could pull it off
00:55:43It's a challenging process
00:55:45I mean a few things work in our favor
00:55:47These are partners that we've worked with before
00:55:48But at the end of the day
00:55:49Everybody has one thing in common
00:55:51And that is a love for what we're doing
00:55:53And a passion to make this the best it can be
00:55:56The idea of being able to play all four of them
00:55:59On the same platform
00:56:01Which we'd never been able to do
00:56:02As well as get the anniversary edition of Halo 2
00:56:05Was sort of a no-brainer
00:56:07Once that actually became a realistic
00:56:09Sort of production reality
00:56:10And then like magic happened
00:56:13And I think we all got really excited
00:56:15And we felt like that was really the way
00:56:16To start our journey on Xbox One
00:56:20Going into E3
00:56:21I think everyone knew we were going to announce Halo 2
00:56:24You know I think we waited a long time
00:56:25Typically we would have announced before E3
00:56:29Everyone knew we were going to announce Halo 2
00:56:31No one really believed
00:56:34That we would do something as ambitious
00:56:36As the Master Chief Collection
00:56:41The simple fact that nobody believed
00:56:43That it was going to be what it was
00:56:44Was actually great momentum for us to ride into E3
00:56:52We've been rehearsing this forever
00:56:54And you know I've got the points that I want to hit
00:56:57With everything that's coming
00:56:59So I get up there
00:57:00You know Bonnie does the intro
00:57:01I get up on stage
00:57:02And I start talking about the collection
00:57:04And you know we hop into the multiplayer
00:57:06And the multiplayer stuff looks great
00:57:08But then the closing is really where the punch is going to be
00:57:10Right the closing is where we're going to say
00:57:12It's all four games
00:57:14You know it's 60 frames per second
00:57:16It's 1080p
00:57:18It's quite literally every multiplayer map
00:57:20That has ever been made
00:57:22And I'm getting to that point
00:57:23And then I just start to hear it
00:57:26Right like people are cheering
00:57:28And as I'm going down the points
00:57:30Now that just the room's going nuts
00:57:31You've got the energy from the room
00:57:33When I walked off the stage
00:57:34There's just this wash of pride
00:57:37Like come over you
00:57:38Right it's like
00:57:38Yeah we were right
00:57:39You know that this is what people want
00:57:44We know where Master Chief is going with Halo 5
00:57:47And I think it's a super interesting story
00:57:49And it does have to do with his past
00:57:52And for us being able to kind of tell that story
00:57:55And lead into the future story was super exciting
00:57:58And we thought about what we wanted to do with 1, 2, 3, 4
00:58:03It is the Halo 2 anniversary
00:58:04It does deserve special treatment
00:58:07When I heard what 343 publishing team was planning
00:58:11As far as all these different games
00:58:14And all these different flip toggle between these upreds versions
00:58:19And this unified UI and unified matchmaking and everything else
00:58:23I thought they were insane
00:58:26I thought they were crazy honestly
00:58:27Such a massive undertaking
00:58:30You know I'm not just passionate about Halo
00:58:32But I'm passionate about what Halo can be
00:58:34And what it can become
00:58:35And I think for all of us
00:58:37We're so invested in Halo for the long term
00:58:40Right it is a universe that we believe in
00:58:44And it is a universe that we want to sort of continue to evolve
00:58:48And grow and innovate with
00:58:50And I think that level of dedication and passion
00:58:55Is pretty standard at 343
00:58:59When the games launch and we go to these midnight events
00:59:02Where the game is finally on sale
00:59:04Seeing how excited people are
00:59:06Seeing that people actually came to a store at midnight
00:59:08And freezing cold
00:59:09To pick up a game they could just as easily have ordered from Amazon
00:59:12The day before
00:59:13Is exciting
00:59:14Because they want to share that joy with us
00:59:17And we get to share it back with them
00:59:18The thing that I'm most excited for
00:59:20With Halo 2 Anniversary
00:59:23And with the Master Chief Collection in general
00:59:25Is going back with my friends from 10 years ago
00:59:28And playing 3v3 one flag on lockout
00:59:32Or classic CTF on midship
00:59:35For me at least
00:59:36That's going to be the place that I'm going to spend the most time
00:59:38Is playing those classic maps with friends from 10 years ago
00:59:42Calling people up that I haven't spoken to in so long
00:59:44And asking them to get online
00:59:45It'll be weird, weird conversations
00:59:47Hey, are you getting on Halo 2 tonight?
00:59:50The universe is a big place, right?
00:59:52I mean, I think this franchise can go anywhere
00:59:55And I think we're all honored to be part of that process
00:59:58Of charting where this thing can go
01:00:00But again, the universe is a big, big place
01:00:04And I don't think there are any limits to how big this can get
01:00:26This is Sparky 117
01:00:28Anybody hear me?
01:00:51I love picking up a sniper because it feels amazing when you get that one hit to the head
01:00:55To get that one hit kill
01:00:57I picked up the shotgun a few times
01:00:59Just ran at people
01:01:00Shooting them in the face
01:01:09To see it kind of remade with better graphics
01:01:12I guess have a real incentive to go back and play the old games
01:01:15Feel the nostalgia
01:01:16It was great
01:01:17It was a lot of fun
01:01:22People are going to absolutely go mad
01:01:24For the Master Chief Collection
01:01:26It's like a love letter to Halo
01:01:27You know, you've got the Halo 1 through 2
01:01:54When we finally see our work go out in the real world
01:01:57I mean, it's so gratifying
01:01:58I mean, I know this sounds really stupid
01:02:01But I've literally cried at some of these things
01:02:04When you see the fan reaction
01:02:06And how much it means to them
