01:13on set together for a limited time
01:15so we've kind of got to cram as much as we can
01:17in this 4 days as possible
01:19It's an ensemble cast this time so
01:22availability is tough to schedule sometimes
01:27We're shooting our opening sequence
01:29in the Pelican deployment bay area
01:31where we meet our team
01:32Osiris team for the first time
01:38Locke
01:38Tanaka
01:40Veil
01:40and Buck
01:43We'll shoot the briefing room scenes
01:44which are on the Infinity
01:47Again
01:48Again that's just a different challenge
01:49than Halo 4 altogether
01:51because the majority of those sequences
01:52are really about
01:53Chief and Cortana
02:03You go from maybe 2 or 3 characters
02:05and you jump to 6, 7, 8
02:07So technically
02:10that's 8 face setups on a day
02:128 audio mics
02:138 head cams
02:14You know
02:16More makeup people to come in
02:17and put dots on faces
02:18And then
02:20when you put all those actors on set together
02:22the sort of chaos factor
02:23kind of goes exponential
02:32Should be a good trip
02:41There's obviously an intro cinematic
02:42that would lead into
02:43it leads into every mission
02:45has one of them
02:45For E3
02:47we've actually cut things in
02:49from cinematics throughout the games
02:51to sort of build that story
02:52and build the mythos
02:53of what the mission is
02:54who the key players are
02:56but yeah
02:57we definitely had to edit out things
02:58so we didn't give away too much

07:35A lot of things have to come together for this sequence to play believably and reliably
07:41And we're just sorting out which components are solid and which ones are giving us trouble
07:50And trying to triage out what we're going to do about each
07:54We also want a good experience for all four players
07:57And so testing that in this type of environment allows us to play through it
08:03See everyone's point of view over and over again
08:06That's awesome
08:07Yeah to me most of the stuff plays really really well
08:10There's one section that I think we need to add a little bit more camera shake

08:21There's performance things to keep in mind too
08:26There is a lot of memory coming from environments from all of animations from effects and destruction
08:33So it's a pretty complex area

08:35We're really trying to make sure it doesn't turn into just another scripted video game experience
08:41Like we want the player to actually play it
08:44So
08:45It's a tall order
08:49Halo 5 is really very co-op centric
08:53The way we build the levels, the way we build the game itself
08:55And the way that we've constructed the characters that you play as in the game
08:59So we actually have two different teams in Halo 5
09:02You have Blue Team, which kind of all brothers and sisters brought back together from the Spartan 2 program
09:06And then you have the Spartan 4s
09:08Fire Team Osiris, which is Locke's team
09:10You know, we have Vale, who's our rookie
09:12We have Tanaka, who's a little bit more of a veteran
09:14We have Buck, who used to be an ODST
09:16So when you're playing as co-op, you're playing as each of these characters
09:19Rather than just generic, you know, alternates of Chief
09:22And so throughout the story you're alternating between both of those teams
09:27There's no visual hierarchy or attenuation in these wires yet
09:30So don't get too concerned with the fact that they're all like 100% full white
09:36You know, I'll organize them and push and fade them back
09:39So that, you know, maybe like the cradles, obviously the health bar
09:42Are a little more visible than things like the elevation
09:46Because that's just kind of fancy
09:47It's just like if you ever put on a motorcycle helmet
09:50You know, you're not really cognizant of like the detail and the padding up on your cheeks, you know
09:55The last one here was Kelly
09:59And she has the EVA visor
10:01And all this stuff, I mean, I definitely used her helmet as a template
10:05So actually, very conveniently, lines like this in the health bar actually match up perfectly with this little horseshoe in
10:12her glass
10:12So I tried to be very ergonomic about finding compliments, you know
10:17So I'm not really inventing too many false lines in any of these concepts
10:23I'm really working off of the truth in the model
10:27And that is all I have on Blue Team, I still need to do Fred
10:30Well, and Jeff actually has done some really interesting explorations
10:38Into projecting normals onto the glass
10:41And you actually got a lot of identity of who that Spartan is from the reflection on the glass
10:48Of the glass paneling
10:50And then we'd have wires on top of this
10:52But hopefully we can rely less on the wires and kind of rely on this stuff
10:57Because I think this captures better the overall shape of the helmet than like our static wires could do
11:02Yeah, I love this stuff. I love doing bold stuff like this
11:05We're all, you know, we're always going to be strapped with the
11:08How much to do of it, you know, and when it impacts gameplay
11:12And starts conflicting with the other stuff going on
11:14Because you have this, you have effects flashing, you have lens flares
11:18You know, the layers start getting crazy
11:20I think both with Jeff's demonstration here and with these illustrations
11:24I think we're being deliberately kind of heavy-handed just for proof of
11:27Just to kind of sell the idea
11:29But I think in practice this stuff, you're going to find this stuff like 50%
11:34Like to either tone down or pushed out
11:35Yeah, it just, it feels more interactive, it feels more modern, yeah

11:55So the new dual camera setup that we have on Halo 5
12:00Lets us get a stereo view of all of Brian's markers so that we can see them with 3D coordinates
12:08That's going to make everything a lot more accurate and give us an even better facial solve

12:36and uncomfortable about the fact that they're going to go track Chief
12:41Travis, he's our backup Buck
12:46Travis is also our primary Fred as well on the team
12:50And we'll basically be taking his entire performance
12:53If we can't get Nathan Fillion in here
12:55And then we'll just have Nathan do some audio on top of his performance
13:01So there's, there's Locke
13:05So we're going to start here with Locke
