00:00Go on, what's the best thing about those Spanish costas?
00:04I like getting the sand in between my toes.
00:06The great shops.
00:07Atmosphere.
00:08Sea.
00:09You hate the sea.
00:10Shut up.
00:11But one thing we could all agree on,
00:13with over 300 days of that glorious sunshine a year,
00:17it sure beats the cold and grey of the old UK.
00:21Ah, this is a lie.
00:23Living that dream can be blooming hard graft.
00:26Misty.
00:27My lad, you're right.
00:28Stress level.
00:30Through the roof.
00:31But at the end of the working day...
00:33Girl power.
00:34Girl power.
00:35Come on, Sam.
00:35Forward.
00:36Booyah.
00:37The quality of life on the costas...
00:41I did it!
00:42..is priceless.
00:43Cheers.
00:45Peace and love.
00:46Cheers.
00:47That's why there will always be...
00:49Start again, she's waffling.
00:50Oh, Kerry.
00:51A lot cheaper than England.
00:53Everybody's in that friendly zone.
00:54This is heaven.
00:56Bargain-loving Brits in the sun.
00:58CHEERING
01:00Today on the costas...
01:02And be careful with the ball balls,
01:04cos they can break.
01:05Savvy Shanie's determined to slay the slow Christmas trade
01:08on her undie stall.
01:10Or do as the Spanish ladies do on New Year's Eve
01:13and wear red.
01:14One, two.
01:15That'll be OK.
01:16Mm-hm.
01:17Cafe manager Kayleigh hopes to belt out bangers,
01:20not serve them at her group's first gig.
01:23Everything's still OK for today, yeah?
01:25Yeah, I'm excited.
01:27250 euros.
01:28Yeah, 250 bit much.
01:30And our vintage find is single mumpreneur Jackie.
01:33Having maxed out on her seventh shop lease,
01:36she needs to be thrifty with the styling.
01:39I've just seen some antelope prawns.
01:42Oh, just look.
01:43Let me just look.
01:51Give me another orange.
01:52Give me another orange.
01:53I want another orange.
01:55My name's Kayleigh,
01:57and I have been living in Spain now for nine years.
02:03It's crazy in the mornings.
02:05Absolutely crazy.
02:06Getting the kids up.
02:07Getting them breakfast and dressed.
02:10It's go, go, go.
02:11All the time.
02:12Especially today.
02:13It's the last rehearsal later
02:15for songstress Kayleigh's first wedding gig.
02:18Come here, guys.
02:20Going to get ready for school now and get dressed?
02:22Oh, mate, come on.
02:24Eat your breakfast.
02:24It's your Frosties.
02:25It's your faves.
02:26They're great.
02:27As are Kayleigh's supportive, er, housemates
02:30in her Almeria home.
02:32Living with my parents is really handy
02:34because they help out with the kids.
02:36Hello.
02:37They're not eating their brekkie, darling.
02:38No.
02:39We argue about little things sometimes,
02:42about who's cooking dinner
02:43and who's hoovering, that kind of thing.
02:45Just silly little things.
02:46Come here, quick.
02:47Who's going to eat it first?
02:48Let's go.
02:48One, two.
02:49We do know how to leave it at work
02:51and not bring it home.
02:54So it does have its...
02:55Yeah, it has its ups and downs,
02:56but every family has ups and downs.
02:59But, no, we do all get on.
03:00They're parents,
03:01but they're really great friends as well.
03:03Go on, I'm going to turn into a beautiful princess.
03:07In grandad's eyes,
03:08I suspect you already are, Sky.
03:10For work, I own a cafe,
03:12so I'm front of house
03:14and my parents work for me,
03:15which is great because I'm their boss for once.
03:19I'm putting it all away.
03:20And I also sing.
03:22I have always dreamt of being a performer.
03:25Since a young age,
03:26I've always been doing karaoke at local bars.
03:30There you go.
03:30You're going to go put it all back in the cupboard.
03:32And it's always been a big, big dream of mine.
03:35So when I moved to Spain,
03:36I thought I might as well try and fill that dream.
03:40Oh, my goodness.
03:42Look at you two.
03:43Wow.
03:43Oh, there's two prettier grandchildren in Spain at the moment.
03:46I'd like to see them.
03:47Kayleigh's taking big steps
03:49to make that dream of a singing career a reality.
03:52This is the Carver Chicks.
03:54Me and my friends put the group together last year.
03:57So we've got Emma, me in the middle,
04:01and then Abby on the right.
04:03Next week, we actually have our first proper gig together,
04:06which is a wedding.
04:08So we'll be doing the entertainment at the wedding reception.
04:12Stakes couldn't be higher.
04:14The happy couple will expect the group set to be flawless.
04:17Hey, Steve.
04:18I'm the roadie, so I'm taking all the speakers,
04:21taking us to the gigs, setting it all up for us.
04:24Come home.
04:24The pay is not as good as it used to be.
04:26In fact, it's non-existent, but there we have it.
04:30These rock and roll stars that they used to have the roadies,
04:32I don't know what the excitement was,
04:33cos I don't get none.
04:35Well, there could be a volavant in it for you.
04:36See, told you I missed.
04:39So the challenges for being a single mum and a working woman
04:44is trying to prioritise the time for the children,
04:48cos, obviously, we work at the cafe Monday to Friday till 4 o'clock,
04:54and then weekends I'm singing.
04:56So it's just getting that balance
04:58with actually spending quality time with the children.
05:02And you've still missed.
05:04If she can squeeze it around the cafe,
05:06which supports her young family.
05:09To do what she does, I take my hat off to her.
05:11You know, I don't think I could do it.
05:13I'd love to do it, but I don't think I could do it.
05:15So we've got a busy day today.
05:16We've got what's normally Fishy Friday,
05:19but this week we haven't got any fish.
05:22My dad forgot to order it.
05:23And then I've got a band practice with the group.
05:28OK, ready?
05:28Yeah.
05:29Who's ready?
05:30Hands up if you're ready.
05:32I'm feeling really nervous about the wedding.
05:34I still get those before nerves where you're going,
05:38oh, I need a drink.
05:40But no drinking, no drinking.
05:42Not even a glass of chamomile tea.
05:45Let's go, March.
05:45Let's go.
05:47It's too late for wedding jitters now,
05:49with that final rehearsal looming.
05:52See you later.
05:55We love a bargain.
05:58Oh, we certainly do.
05:59Whether you're up for upcycling...
06:01Put the husband to work.
06:03Have you got a brand new mirror?
06:04..or bulk buying for knock-down prices.
06:07Obviously, you get more bang for your buck,
06:09but what you've got to make sure you do
06:10is not drink it all at once.
06:13Nothing makes us Brits happier than saving a few bop.
06:16Oh, I love a bargain.
06:18I love a second-hand shop.
06:20And who doesn't love a haggle?
06:21Eight euros, and it's my favourite new ring.
06:24Basically, I think if you give them my contacts and haggle,
06:27I think they appreciate that,
06:29and basically, you've got their respect then.
06:31And if it shaves off a few euro, even better.
06:34Always rub your belly when you're going to make a bargain,
06:36cos they know you mean business.
06:39Or hungry, for a deal, that is.
06:41And he's not the only one.
06:46250 euros.
06:47Yeah, 250, bit much.
06:49Single mum Jackie will go down in history
06:51as a top-notch bargain hunter.
06:53So much so, we're going for a bog-off
06:56down Fuenke-Roller Flea Market.
06:58I'd like some nice ornaments.
07:00I'd love a big...
07:01I'd love a big lion or...
07:05..just something quite British.
07:07Even a bulldog.
07:09Back in 2022, this enterprising Essex girl
07:12was on the brink of adding two new shops
07:14to her ever-expanding empire,
07:17starting with her seventh tattoo parlour.
07:19One minute, I've just seen some antelope bones.
07:23Oh, just look. Let me just look.
07:26Having sunk everything into the lease and shop fitting...
07:29That's real!
07:31It's real!
07:33Jackie had 100 quid left
07:35for a statement piece to dress it.
07:38It's quite exciting,
07:39cos you never know what you're going to find.
07:42A nice pair of antlers would look a bit different,
07:44but we'll see what we can find.
07:46And the thing is, I've got a background in antiques as well,
07:49so it really helps me.
07:51That's really cute.
07:52Nice.
07:54It's a baby!
07:56OK, OK.
07:58Not the reaction you're after.
08:00That's upsetting the children.
08:04Don't be upset, honey.
08:06They didn't kill it.
08:07It was probably already dead.
08:09Probably.
08:10With less than two weeks until opening,
08:13Jackie's got to make fast work of her to-do list.
08:16Yeah, the leopard, that was a shame.
08:18Massively overpriced.
08:19300 euros.
08:20That would have been a lovely, lovely piece.
08:22These are nice.
08:25I don't want it.
08:27They're really nice, huh?
08:31I think these would be expensive.
08:3390 and what?
08:34What?
08:35One of them.
08:36What can I do?
08:3975, yes.
08:41I can do 50.
08:43I'm looking for 50, Royce.
08:44She drives a hard bargain, I think.
08:47OK, si, senor.
08:4860.
08:49Muy, muy bonito.
08:51So it was up to 95 and I got him down to 60.
08:56So I'm quite happy with that.
08:57That's a good deal.
08:59A third off.
09:00I'm impressed.
09:01Money's tight raising three kids alone
09:03and running your own businesses.
09:06What is the best price you can do?
09:08I'm going to pay for it.
09:10Yes.
09:11What is the best?
09:1270.
09:13I'd like it.
09:1550?
09:1650.
09:17Very good.
09:19Thank you, senor.
09:21I think, for me, the bargain of the day was my tiger.
09:24Yes!
09:25I love this.
09:27It's a 1920s French ceramic piece.
09:30I think they're beautiful.
09:32Really nice.
09:32I love that tiger.
09:34I've got him down to 50, so that's a good price.
09:38Let's get him back to Ben-Omarina to dress the shop
09:41and start making money.
09:43Very heavy.
09:44Oh, my God.
09:44We could work out with this dress.
09:46Look.
09:48Don't drop it.
09:49You sure?
09:51Hallelujah.
09:52The sweat is worth it today.
09:54Scavenging for deals in the Spanish heat
09:56brings its own challenges.
09:58Everyone's exhausted now.
10:00I think we need to get back.
10:02We're hot and tired, but happy.
10:04We've got our bits.
10:06Good shop.
10:08Now Jackie needs the shop ready to put them in.
10:13Coming up, it's mittens off
10:16as Santa Shani's seasonal marketing strategy
10:18cranks up a gear.
10:19No, too low.
10:21Too low?
10:21Yeah, when people come in, they can knock their heads.
10:25No, Kaylee!
10:26It's mummy.
10:27And major doubts are creeping in for songstress Kaylee.
10:31It's the struggle with everything,
10:33with the calf, the kids, the group,
10:35singing, everything.
10:48So you've got these.
10:51If you can put them under each shutter.
10:56I'm Shani.
10:59And I'm Laurie.
11:00And be careful with the baubles, because they can break.
11:03Your eyes aren't deceiving you.
11:05It is only November.
11:06But entrepreneur Shani's big Christmas crusade starts today.
11:10You're going to leave these, you're going to take these down each night,
11:13or are you going to leave them up for December?
11:15No, you've got to take them down every, every, we've got to take them.
11:18I'd leave them up, Shani.
11:20I'd just leave them up.
11:21We're getting ready for Christmas today.
11:23We have Christmas music in the shop.
11:26Make it really festive for the customers.
11:29Selling comfort and joy in Torre Vieca.
11:32No, too low.
11:33Too low?
11:34Yeah, when people come in, they're going to knock their heads.
11:38Oh, well, they're going up.
11:38Don't forget, the shutter's going up.
11:40Still think it's too low.
11:42Still too low.
11:43Too low.
11:44Christmas is very poor for the business,
11:46just like summer holidays are really bad for the business.
11:49Well, the tourists don't come over and buy lingerie,
11:52and a lot of people, they leave Spain, they go back home,
11:55back to Northern Europe or ever,
11:56and, you know, it's just not a big thing for them anyway.
12:00No.
12:00Not big for us.
12:01So they'll need to box clever with savvy tactics to boost sales.
12:06It gets quieter from, I'd say, the first week in December.
12:11Nothing really going on in the market.
12:13It's completely dead,
12:15even though the markets are open on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
12:18But really nice.
12:19Really nice because the weather's lovely.
12:21Every cloud, eh?
12:23As the stall's part of a weekly market
12:25that's just four Sundays until Christmas
12:27to target the few customers they do get.
12:30Oh, it looks nice.
12:31You've done it really well.
12:32Good.
12:33Shani loves Christmas, actually.
12:34Yeah, she really does.
12:36I mean, we don't celebrate with loads of presents or anything like that.
12:39Time to do the Christmas tree.
12:41It's always a really nice time.
12:43It's just really relaxing.
12:44Even go down the beach, you know,
12:46which is a lovely thing to do at Christmas time.
12:48I like everything to match.
12:49I love silver, pinks.
12:51Our Christmas tree at home is cream and turquoise.
12:54So, yeah, I like things matching.
12:57So, what I'd like to do is get a postcard made like a Christmas card
13:01so that we're in our hats
13:04and the dogs are in their little outfits.
13:07I know it's the end of November,
13:08but just look at the weather now.
13:10I mean, the last Sunday in November,
13:12it's just amazing we don't even need coats.
13:14And that's not all she's lined up today for her festive lunch.
13:18Morning.
13:19Oh, morning, Anne.
13:21Very Christmassy indeed.
13:22Yeah, did the Christmas tree.
13:23I know, Laurie did all the tassels outside.
13:27Oh, he's been busy.
13:27So, uh, you're getting in the mood, aren't we?
13:29In the mood for Christmas, yeah.
13:31A bit different from Hogmanay back home for Scottish lass Anne.
13:35I met Anne through Laurie's paddle group
13:37and I just had this sort of feeling that,
13:40oh, I think she'd be good working for us.
13:42I love Christmas.
13:43I am very much a Christmassy person, yes.
13:45I do look forward to it and I love cooking Christmas dinner.
13:48And she's been amazing, you know,
13:50so she's been with us for two years now.
13:52A little elf tells me Shaney's planned a thank-you surprise for Anne tonight.
13:56But next on her festive to-do list, it's sell, sell, sell.
14:00And it's nearly Christmas time,
14:02so I thought I'd do just a little video
14:04to show some examples of what you could buy yourself for Christmas.
14:08I post so much on social media.
14:10I post on about 600 groups a week.
14:13She's gone for the direct selling approach this year.
14:15We've got some beautiful bra sets in with the pants to match.
14:21Because it's in the market but not on the high street
14:23that people pass normally, you know,
14:24it's really important to keep it in people's faces, really.
14:27So social media's really important.
14:29Advertising, really, just to let people know we're still there, really.
14:32Or do as the Spanish ladies do on New Year's Eve and wear red.
14:37No, was that OK?
14:38It was absolutely brilliant.
14:39You were almost professional.
14:40Oh, thank you very much.
14:42Shaney's unwrapping all her marketing bestsellers this Christmas.
14:45I sort of run competitions every, I would say,
14:49every two or three months.
14:51Well, it is the season for giving, after all.
14:54So I've been running a Christmas competition on my social media.
14:58It's brought a lot of attention.
15:00People comment and share.
15:02And they can win a €30 voucher.
15:04So, at random, I've picked a winner.
15:07Good morning.
15:07Good morning.
15:09How are you?
15:09Good, thank you.
15:11You're Denise.
15:12Yes.
15:12I recognise you.
15:13You've been to me before, haven't you?
15:15Regular casket.
15:17Aw, congratulations.
15:19Thank you so much.
15:20You're very welcome.
15:21For competition winner Denise, Christmas has come very early.
15:24I'd never, ever win anything.
15:27And I've had quite a really good-looking week this week.
15:30So, do you want some help now with spending your voucher?
15:34Yes, please.
15:35You're very welcome.
15:36Aw, happy Christmas.
15:38Thank you very much.
15:39Bye, Mum.
15:40Bye.
15:41The shop's early festive launch is going to plan.
15:45But will the doggy photo shoot bring glad tidings?
15:49You never know what the dogs are going to be like, but we'll have a go.
15:52Yeah, all right.
15:53Dogs in festive togs flees Navidad.
16:02There we go.
16:04The girls are here already.
16:05Well done.
16:06So, today's going to be a long day.
16:09We've got, everyone books in for, like, for today at the cafe, and then later on, me, Abby and Emma
16:14will be getting together just to practice through for what we're going to do for next week.
16:19If their first ever wedding gig next week goes down well, it could drum up future paid bookings.
16:25Better than Greg's.
16:28But until the group takes off, budding singer Kayleigh's bread and butter is the family firm.
16:33This is a dream come true, all working together as a family.
16:37I'm in my naughty corner.
16:39The girls do what they do.
16:41It just doesn't get any better.
16:43The role is at the cafe.
16:44So, my dad is in the kitchen cooking, and he is chef and comedian.
16:50Kitchen, muesli, bacon, bacon.
16:53That's the way forward.
16:54My mum is also in the kitchen, who preps everything up, salads and everything, makes cakes.
17:01Who's just going to make a cup of tea?
17:02And then you've got me out front.
17:05Just making sure all the customers are happy.
17:08There we go.
17:09Thank you very much.
17:10And we'll see you next week.
17:12The Almaria Cafe gives expats a taste of home, but it's a world away from Kayleigh's old life in Essex.
17:19So, it's our nine-year anniversary of moving here tomorrow, and I've missed some things about the UK, but not
17:27as much as I don't miss, really.
17:30Hi, are you OK?
17:32I am.
17:32Yeah.
17:32Can I have a vegetarian all day breakfast, please?
17:35Yeah.
17:36Living in Spain, I enjoy the lifestyle.
17:38Well, everyone is, you know, relaxed, chilled, everything's like meniana tomorrow.
17:45The change of pace isn't the only adjustment Kayleigh's had to make.
17:49I was in a relationship for six years, and then we had Jackson and Skye, and then we got married,
17:56and we were married for about two years.
17:59And roughly 12, 14 months ago, we separated, and I moved back in with my mum and dad, so the
18:07kids had a steady home.
18:08What can I get you, darling, to drink?
18:11It's been very difficult, but like I say, I've got all my family support.
18:15Mum and dad here, my family in the UK, they're always supporting me.
18:20It's right on the edge, so, yeah, I've come out stronger at the other side.
18:28Especially if Kayleigh's singing side hustle takes off.
18:33Hello, you all right?
18:35Everything still OK for today, yeah?
18:37Yeah, I'm excited.
18:39It'll be good, won't it?
18:40Me, Emma and Abby started the Carver Chicks last year.
18:44I like singing anyway, you know what I'm like, I want to sing.
18:46We all went out one night, and we were drinking Carver, believe it or not.
18:52Once we get you singing, there's no stopping you.
18:55We've always liked singing together anyway, because we like to harmonise with each other.
18:59And we decided we should do this, and do a group, and party songs, and things like that.
19:04Just stick into the girl groups.
19:06All right, I'll see you shortly.
19:08See you soon. Bye.
19:09The dream's for us to really push it, and get as many gigs as we possibly can.
19:16As a single mum, she depends on family for support, while she focuses on her new career.
19:22Once the kids have finished school, they come back to the cafe, and they play in the back room.
19:28Well done. High five.
19:31That's really good. That is my way.
19:34Look, Kayleigh!
19:36It's Mummy.
19:37Kayleigh!
19:37Mummy.
19:38Kayleigh!
19:39I hope I'm a good role model for them when they grow up, or even now.
19:46But juggling everything, trying to give them the best life as I possibly can.
19:50So I'll go without, if it means they get.
19:53It's a struggle with everything, with the calf, the kids, the group, singing, everything.
19:59But I wouldn't change it for the world, because watching them now, I'm proud.
20:05Very proud.
20:06And I'm happy things are the way they are.
20:08I wouldn't want it any other way.
20:10Ding dong!
20:10You never know, Kayleigh, if opportunity comes knocking...
20:14Hello!
20:15..it could be your time to answer it.
20:19Ding dong!
20:21Ding dong!
20:24Ding dong!
20:26Ding dong!
20:28Ding dong!
20:28Ding dong!
20:30Ding dong!
20:30Ding dong!
20:31These are an absolute steal.
20:32So this one came in a little kit.
20:34It was £2 from a charity shop.
20:36Ding dong!
20:39This is needle felting.
20:42I've never done it before.
20:43This was my first little attempt.
20:45You get the instructions with it and all the wool, and it just tells you how to do it.
20:50I just sat down.
20:51It took me about three days to do it.
20:53And I just love her.
20:54I think she's fantastic.
20:56She's not perfect, but everyone's got to start somewhere.
20:59And for her first attempt, I think I did pretty good.
21:08At the moment, making a Chico, and it's coming along quite well.
21:12It just takes you away and puts you in your own little world for about an hour a day.
21:16It's fantastic.
21:23It just de-stresses me while we're on the long journeys, and it means I don't have to talk to
21:27Mark as well, which is a bonus, really.
21:34Come on, beauty.
21:37You carrying them, honey, for me?
21:39Grab those, two beauties.
21:41Bargain hunter Jackie and the kids are back with their flea market finds to dress her seventh tattoo parlour.
21:48This is why this shop is amazing.
21:51It's in a prime expat location in Beno Madida.
21:55Ta-da!
21:56I was looking down there.
21:57This is pure British Mecca land.
22:02Buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz.
22:06Food, restaurants.
22:08And here I'm going to have a huge sign saying tattoos.
22:14Bajacks.
22:16It's going to be amazing, amazing.
22:19I shouldn't be getting another shop.
22:21I shouldn't.
22:22I'm in the summer.
22:23I should be saving.
22:24But I can't help.
22:25I just can't help myself.
22:26But I love it.
22:27It's in such a good position.
22:29So Jackie has to make this new unit pay for itself pronto.
22:34This will be the tattoo area.
22:36There'll be a tattoo area there, reception there.
22:38And I'd ideally like it very clean, surgical looking,
22:44but with some real nice little pieces, you know, that are eye-catching,
22:49that people come in and say, oh, my God, I love that.
22:52Where'd you get that?
22:53The tiger's making sense now.
22:55Having splashed all her savings on shop fitters,
22:58who thankfully finished, and a new sign on order,
23:02she's forced to build her own furniture.
23:04Hope this is the way the legs go.
23:06Can't risk any wobbles with a tattoo chair, Jackie.
23:09No, I've got it, I think.
23:10But now I need a little spanner.
23:12I haven't got a spanner.
23:14Oh!
23:16Spanner.
23:17You'll be a flat-pack pro after this.
23:20Years of IKEA training, this is.
23:22I'm not great at things, but I just have a go,
23:24and we can do it.
23:26Women power.
23:27But trust me, if there was a man here, I'd say,
23:29could you do this for me, please?
23:33But there's not, so we get on with it.
23:35You know, Nanny would be able to do this in a whiz.
23:38Yeah, Nanny.
23:43She'll sort it in nano-quick time.
23:46She's off tomorrow,
23:47but she's having a little five-day break in España.
23:50A break?
23:52Well, I say a break.
23:53It's hard to meet you.
23:56I'd say a break.
23:57I've never worked so hard in all my life.
24:00The whole family rallies to meet Jackie's tight deadline.
24:03Don't know what these were for.
24:06Let's hope they weren't important.
24:08You'll know soon enough when customers take a seat.
24:11Mr Tiger is going to be sitting on there.
24:13So the horns, I'm thinking, here.
24:17The decor may be coming together,
24:19but nobody will get to see it
24:21unless the man from the council gives her permission to open.
24:25So in three days, the licence guy will come.
24:27He'll take a picture of the bathroom area.
24:30All pictures of things like the fire hose,
24:33the reception area,
24:35the tattoo area,
24:37and then he'll send that off to get licence
24:39and then it might be open in a week or two.
24:41Every day's delay costs Jackie money.
24:43Good location,
24:45right class of people,
24:46right type of people.
24:48The people around, yeah.
24:50Rocking roll cards,
24:51yeah, the fighters, yeah.
24:53But until the inspector gives Jackie the thumbs up
24:55to welcome her first customers...
24:57Voila!
24:58Well done.
25:00Is it to be or not to be?
25:03That is the question.
25:07Coming up...
25:08I can't believe they're doing this.
25:11Reluctant elf Laurie takes one for the team
25:13for Shanie's Christmas campaign.
25:15That is definitely the picture, Laurie.
25:17Put that on my social media.
25:19And it's the final run-through
25:20for songstress Kayleigh
25:21as their first wedding gig looms large.
25:24It will be amazing
25:26if we can get everything right
25:27and get the right songs as well,
25:28extra to what we've got.
25:29Yeah.
25:30It'll be brilliant.
25:31Yeah.
25:37Come on, you.
25:39Come on, you.
25:41You're beautiful.
25:42Where's that Benny?
25:44Jealous?
25:45Jealous?
25:46Well, a little bit.
25:47After their shop's early festive launch this morning,
25:50it's phase two of Casada Sweetheart's
25:53Laurie and Shanie's Christmas campaign.
25:55Great day today.
25:57It's really surprising for the end of November
25:58because it's normally starting to get fairly quiet now
26:00going into December.
26:02That'll pay for that surprise Christmas treat
26:04for assistant Anne and husband Brian later.
26:07You're going out soon, aren't you?
26:08Going out for a lovely walk.
26:10But first, Tia and Harry are, um,
26:12psyching themselves up
26:14for their Christmas card close-up.
26:16I quite like Christmas.
26:17I always like Christmas.
26:18I think I like the food, especially in the drink.
26:21But you love Christmas, really, don't you?
26:23Well, I think I loved it more when the kids were young.
26:27And this year is going to be the first Christmas
26:29that we've been on our own.
26:31Right.
26:34Come on, Harry.
26:36Without the family to entertain this year,
26:38Shanie's devoting more time to boosting sales
26:41during a notoriously quiet time at the shop.
26:44Right, we ready?
26:45Yeah, all ready.
26:46I've got all the dogs' jumpers and our hats.
26:50Yeah.
26:50So, um, yeah, just trying to get it all Christmassy
26:54so I can post the card on my page.
26:57Let's go.
26:59An elfie, if you will.
27:04So, where do you want to actually park?
27:05Well, I think if we go right to the end
27:07and then turn right and park behind the huts.
27:11I've got one for you, Shanie.
27:12What did they call Father Christmas when he lost his pants?
27:16Saint Nicholas.
27:17You can have that.
27:19I've got Harry.
27:20You've got Harry?
27:20Sort of.
27:22Yeah.
27:24Right, OK.
27:24I've got Harry now.
27:25I've got Harry.
27:26OK, you've got him then.
27:28Right, I've got this here.
27:30They live a 15-minute drive from popular Guatemala Beach.
27:34We've travelled quite a lot.
27:36I don't think we've seen beaches much better than this anywhere.
27:39Do you know what?
27:39We could be in the Caribbean here.
27:41It's amazing.
27:41Just about, yeah.
27:42Famed for having the warmest waters in Spain,
27:45perfect for a Christmas dip.
27:47It's a lovely space over there, Lowell.
27:49Let's do it there.
27:50Yeah, that'll do.
27:52Christmas has always been a really special time of year.
27:54I mean, in my family, it was really the highlight of the year in some ways.
27:59You know, like, it's just, it's all part of being English, isn't it?
28:02Having a great Christmas.
28:03And it's come early today, you cheeky elf.
28:07I can't believe they're doing this.
28:09I mean, Christmas in Spain, all the restaurants are open,
28:12do Christmas dinners.
28:13There's so many English people here, so it's all very Christmassy.
28:16But it's not the same as being in England with Christmas,
28:19because you've got all the adverts, everything going on,
28:22all the decorations on everyone's houses.
28:24People do decorate their houses here, but not as much as in the UK.
28:28Harry, Harry, look.
28:29Harry, sit.
28:30Look, what's this?
28:32Ever the reluctant content creator is our Harry.
28:37Wonderful.
28:42That is definitely the picture, Laurie.
28:44Put that on my social media, just wishing everyone a happy Christmas.
28:47Yeah.
28:48And thanking them for their custom throughout the year.
28:51Brilliant. Put it on Christmas Day, eh?
28:52Yeah, brilliant.
28:53OK, fantastic.
28:54But today's festive fun is not over yet.
28:58So we're now going back, taking the dogs home,
29:01and then we're meeting Brian and Anne and taking them out
29:04to say thank you for all what they've done the whole year
29:07and to wish them a happy Christmas.
29:09Well, that's a successful afternoon.
29:12It was.
29:12They're going to love it, Brian and Anne, when they see that.
29:16Positively picture perfect.
29:20Costa Blanca, let's be having you.
29:22It's not just Shaney and Laurie who've lost their hearts to Spain.
29:25As soon as I came here, I thought, this is somewhere that I'd really like to live when I'm older.
29:29Yeah, I love it here.
29:31Over 300 days of sunshine a year beats Britain hands down.
29:35If we were given the choice and we could lock up, leave everything safely at home,
29:39our kids are grown and everything like that,
29:41we wouldn't question twice moving over here to Spain.
29:44We'd gladly trade home comforts for the costas.
29:47Oh, gosh, yes, absolutely.
29:48I'd love to live in Benidorm.
29:50I just think it's just...
29:52I would live in Benidorm.
29:53It's clean, it's beautiful.
29:55Benidorm for the win.
29:56Move here?
29:57Probably not, but then you're half Spanish, so...
30:00I would.
30:00You would, yeah.
30:01So, good luck with that.
30:03Yeah, thanks.
30:04He'll come round Marina.
30:06I live between here and Glasgow.
30:08I have a rented flat.
30:10A part-time lover, that's what you are, Colin.
30:13Oh, I wouldn't, I'd miss my family.
30:15Well, we don't expect you to leave them behind, Jo.
30:18Absolutely.
30:19I want a caravan.
30:22Caravan.
30:22I want a caravan.
30:24We're there, Colin.
30:24We love a caravan.
30:25And I'm coming here.
30:26Yeah.
30:26Get those poor women a caravan.
30:28We actually discussed this the other day,
30:30but I don't know if my body would take it.
30:33I couldn't be tired.
30:35I literally could not take it.
30:36He'd have no liver left.
30:38Best stick to a fortnight, Stephen.
30:40And a pint of water or two.
30:42I think British are living the dream out here.
30:43You can't go wrong.
30:45It's good.
30:46Cheap.
30:47You'll enjoy your life.
30:49Andrew, you have nailed it.
30:56Really happy with how the shop's looking now.
30:59In Benalmadina, enterprising Jackie's never looked back.
31:03She's set to open her seventh tattoo parlour on the costas,
31:06if all goes to plan.
31:08How gorgeous does he look here.
31:11I'm so happy with this that I got from the boot sale.
31:14Love him.
31:15But he'll have no customers to greet without the trading licence
31:19she's still waiting for.
31:21I love this location.
31:22A bit like Titanic.
31:27Well, with a better outcome, hopefully.
31:29And good news, I found out a couple of days ago,
31:32right next door to me, I have got a biker's bar.
31:37That could drive up custom.
31:39It's my smallest shop, and I'm just hoping it could be a busy one.
31:42So I'm really fingers crossed.
31:45Please.
31:46I can't help noticing you don't practise what you preach.
31:49I'm a tattooist that hasn't got any tattoos.
31:52But I always say you don't need to have brain surgery
31:54to be a brain surgeon.
31:56Erm, OK.
31:57With trade heavily dependent on tourists,
32:00it can be unreliable.
32:02There's always a risk.
32:03And I've got a lot to maintain.
32:05I've got the house.
32:06I've got the three little monkeys running around.
32:09We need maintenance.
32:10So I've got to work.
32:11I've got to always go forward.
32:13So before she even gets permission to open her seventh shop,
32:17Jackie's eyeing up a backup, selling bubble tea and waffles.
32:21So this is actually where one of my shops is,
32:24and the bubble shop that I'm thinking of getting is right there.
32:29So close, so ideal.
32:32This will be gone.
32:32I'll take this down, put a shutter in so the front's wide open,
32:36and then maybe do a kind of counter there.
32:41If you're hungry, you're walking along,
32:43and you smell that bubble waffle, you're going to come in.
32:45Having never made bubble tea or bubble waffles before...
32:49Woo! Woo! That's heavy.
32:51..dipping her finger into this sweet treat craze is a gamble.
32:55And I think it'll be amazing,
32:56so I'm going to guinea pig the kids now.
32:59On Hong Kong bubble waffle.
33:01If the trial goes well,
33:03she may well have taken on shop eight
33:05before number seven is even open.
33:07Oh, I'm losing count.
33:08Guys, can you help me?
33:10Does anyone want bubble waffles?
33:12Yeah!
33:12I can't hear you!
33:14Yeah!
33:14I can't hear you!
33:15Yeah!
33:16Her taste testers are bubbling with enthusiasm,
33:19but the jury's out on whether this venture could lift off.
33:30Oh, yeah!
33:31Hiya!
33:31You all right?
33:34How are you?
33:34Hello, you all right?
33:35You all right?
33:35Mwah!
33:36Mwah!
33:36How are you doing?
33:37Yeah, good, thank you.
33:38Yeah?
33:38So far, the Carver Chicks have done one proper set.
33:44Hungry?
33:45Can I get you some drinks?
33:46Yes.
33:46We supported a different band that came down from Madrid,
33:52so we were the support act for them.
33:55But next week is Kayleigh's group's first ever wedding gig.
33:58Today's their crucial last practice in her Almaria cafe.
34:02And then, have you finished?
34:04Yeah, all finished now.
34:04Let's get going.
34:05I'm just going to take your kids to the park.
34:08All right, if you need me, just give me a call.
34:10OK, will do.
34:11I'll be there.
34:12So we've obviously got the wedding Wednesday,
34:15so we need to make sure everything is right,
34:16and it's an important day for them.
34:19So it needs to be spot on.
34:21Yeah, they're looking forward to it, aren't they?
34:22So we want to make sure it's perfect and they have a good night.
34:26I love the atmosphere that we make with the Carver Chicks,
34:30even though we've only done one gig.
34:32It will be amazing if we can get everything right
34:34and get the right songs as well, extra to what we've got.
34:36Yeah.
34:37Yeah, it'll be brilliant.
34:38The banter is great.
34:39We all bounce off each other and we have a good laugh.
34:43Banter's all well and good,
34:45but this fledgling group needs their set to be perfect
34:48if they're going to turn this into a real money spinner.
34:51OK, forward to this.
34:52One, two, one, two.
34:54My plans for the future,
34:56I would like to get a property for me and the kids
35:01so we can move out of my mum's.
35:03One, two.
35:05To give the kids their own little place as well
35:07so they've got something for when they get older.
35:11So we're just starting then, yeah?
35:13That is high, Bebs.
35:14Yep.
35:21I want to be the best version of myself I can for them
35:25and be the best mum I can.
35:26I want them to see me being the strong mum
35:28who carried on for everything.
35:33Yeah, I feel this is a new chapter started,
35:35doing all this with the girls.
35:37We can only really go up, I guess.
35:44Break a leg next week, ladies.
35:48Coming up.
35:49Oh!
35:51Boom!
35:52The junior taste testers are properly jacked up
35:55by mum's tea and waffle trial.
35:57We have our first customer.
35:59We can't have a Christmas dinner without a means pie,
36:02so we can't.
36:02And Shaney's festive surprise for assistant Anne
36:06goes with a bang.
36:07What a poor man.
36:08Here you go, Luke.
36:09I've got a promise.
36:09You have a measure in tape for your bros.
36:21I need to Google the temperature now.
36:24I want to do something.
36:25Just one top, one bottom.
36:27In Benelmanina, Jackie of all trades
36:30has her army of taste testers
36:32primed to give their verdict
36:33on a possible new enterprise.
36:36It's a waffle with bubbles.
36:38While she's waiting for permission
36:39to open her seventh tattoo studio,
36:42Jackie's opening a bubble tea and waffle shop.
36:45I've got a lot, lot, lot more research to do.
36:48But this is nice research.
36:51Oh!
36:53Boom!
36:54If novice Jackie's bubble tea
36:56and waffle making skills are sweet enough...
36:58What are you going to do in the shop?
37:00Be the manager.
37:02There's a unit that's come up
37:03beside one of her tattoo shops
37:05that would be the perfect spot.
37:07This is my magic for the bubble waffle.
37:10This is tapioca starch,
37:12flour,
37:14vegetable oil,
37:15custard powder,
37:16baking powder,
37:18water.
37:20Oh, and six eggs.
37:21Oh!
37:22Can't give my recipe away.
37:24Too late.
37:24They look more like bubble wrap
37:26and have a taste
37:27that is sweeter and more eggy
37:29than regular waffles.
37:30We have our first customer!
37:33What do you think, Bahara?
37:36Mmm, and coffee.
37:39Yeah.
37:40100 out of 10.
37:4110.
37:4210%.
37:42Say 100%.
37:45How much would you pay for that?
37:47$5.50 is OK.
37:49Sweet.
37:49Can we interest you in a bubble tea
37:51to wash all that down?
37:53Right.
37:54You've got to stir this in, OK?
37:56Now I'm going to do popping balls.
37:58So basically,
38:00popping balls,
38:01the little juice balls
38:02you get in the bottom
38:03of the bubble juices.
38:06So just do one gentle drip.
38:10Squeeze it
38:11so you just get one.
38:13They can be all different colours
38:14and you bite them
38:17and they squish out juice.
38:18You buy them from
38:19and you can actually make them.
38:21So then I found out
38:22you use sodium alginate
38:25and calcium lactate.
38:29So one of them,
38:30you put in the juice
38:31and the other one,
38:33you put in
38:34and it makes the ball.
38:36Sometimes it's just nice
38:37to do things that push you
38:38and challenge you.
38:39So I do enjoy
38:41to be challenged.
38:42Oh my God!
38:44That is mine!
38:46That is mine!
38:47Today's experiment
38:48was brilliant.
38:49I learnt so much
38:51and it was really fun.
38:53So I might be hiring
38:54this little group.
38:56You're my manager.
38:58You're my ball maker.
39:00No, that don't work.
39:01The trial's been a success
39:02but Jackie has a big decision
39:04to make.
39:05Eight shops,
39:06maybe too much
39:07and well,
39:07burst her bubble.
39:08I'm going to take
39:09another look at it
39:10this afternoon
39:11just to see how I feel
39:13when I get there.
39:14My whole goal
39:15and my whole drive
39:16is basically
39:17and my dream
39:18is to have stability.
39:20I don't want
39:20Rockstar house,
39:21Rockstar car,
39:22loads of money.
39:23I want stability
39:24for me and my children
39:25and if the bubble tea
39:27can go forward with that
39:28and help me get that
39:30then we'll go down that road.
39:32Every single time
39:34we finish an activity
39:35the kids disappear
39:36and I'm left with a mess.
39:37Following that second viewing,
39:39Jackie decided to hold off
39:41on a bubble tea
39:42and waffles business.
39:43They're like,
39:43oh, that was fun.
39:44Bye.
39:45Off to play with the bunny.
39:47After she finally
39:48got the thumbs up
39:49from the council
39:50to open her seventh
39:51tattoo shop.
39:52Congratulations.
39:59Well, we're just going
40:00to celebrate Christmas
40:01with Anne and Brian,
40:03our good friends
40:04and who work with us
40:04on the store.
40:05Yes, I know it's November
40:07but let's not spoil
40:08Laurie and Shaney's
40:09seasonal fun, hey?
40:11These pies?
40:12And just have a lovely
40:14little chill that night
40:15after the market.
40:16And thank them
40:16for all the work
40:17that they've done for us
40:18throughout the year.
40:19Yeah, exactly.
40:20Hi, guys.
40:21Oh, good evening.
40:23How are you doing?
40:23Oh, good evening.
40:24How's it going?
40:25Good to see you.
40:26Lovely to see you.
40:27Lovely to see you too.
40:28I'm going to see you
40:29for at least an hour.
40:31How are you doing?
40:31I'm fine.
40:33Their early festive
40:34lunch day's been as
40:35stuffed as a Christmas
40:36turkey, but finally
40:38they can relax.
40:39Here's our Christmassy
40:40table.
40:41When we go away
40:42on holiday, Anne and
40:44Brian, they run the
40:45business with the girls
40:46for us.
40:47We know we can trust
40:48them and it's just
40:49really nice to work
40:51with people that you
40:51like.
40:52Cheers, all.
40:52Cheers.
40:53I think when you move
40:55to any new country,
40:57especially to live,
40:59it's really important
40:59to make friends and get
41:01a good social circle.
41:03And they've cracked it
41:04with this pair.
41:05Oh, you would.
41:07And you're all in the
41:08same boat.
41:08You've all moved over.
41:10You all left the
41:11families.
41:11One of the poor
41:12man.
41:12Here you go, Luke.
41:13Here's my measuring
41:14taffy eyebrows.
41:18Everyone tends to
41:19talk to each other
41:20in restaurants or in
41:21bars, anywhere, you
41:22know, you've got
41:23something in common.
41:25Thank you so much for
41:26everything you've done
41:27for us over the year.
41:28We really, really
41:29appreciate it.
41:31This is on our
41:31bars tonight.
41:32No, no, no, no.
41:35I want to say thank
41:36you.
41:36Thank you very much.
41:38Really appreciate it.
41:39And it's not your
41:39standard festive grub
41:41tonight.
41:41And not just because
41:42Shaney's Christmas
41:44has come very early.
41:45Paella for Christmas,
41:46eh, Brian?
41:47Well, and we go.
41:49Not wearing Spain.
41:50That's it.
41:51You've got to do
41:51what you've got to do.
41:52I know.
41:53How wonderful.
41:54Since they've
41:54adopted Spain as their
41:55home, they've adopted
41:57some of its customs, too.
41:58Today's been a great day.
41:59Really successful, both in
42:01the shop and both this
42:02evening.
42:03It's been a really
42:04lovely day.
42:05Yeah.
42:05A little Christmassy
42:06day.
42:07He loves my mince
42:08pies.
42:09Yeah, I think the
42:10earlier you can get
42:11celebrating for Christmas,
42:12the better.
42:13You can never do it too
42:14early.
42:15Who's for a mince
42:16pie, guys, love?
42:17Yes, thank you.
42:18Yeah, and you.
42:19Typical.
42:20Boys will have the
42:21pie.
42:21We can't have a
42:22Christmas dinner without
42:23a mince pie, can we?
42:24It's lovely to get the
42:26crackers and the
42:27mince pies.
42:28Don't you agree,
42:29Laurie?
42:29Yeah, I mean, you
42:30couldn't just go totally
42:32like native and Spanish,
42:34could you?
42:34It wouldn't seem like
42:35Christmas.
42:35Feliz Navidad.
42:37Happy Christmas.
42:38Feliz Navidad.
42:40No, I won't sing.
42:45Next time on The
42:46Costas, have animal
42:47lovers Paul and
42:48Mick found the
42:48perfect match for
42:49their pawsome pal?
42:50Paul, you're
42:51right now.
42:51Love is in the
42:52air for new
42:53couple Sonia and
42:54Tim.
42:54I think I'm a
42:55little bit of a
42:55goose for you.
42:57And we rewind to
42:58when bar owner Clark
43:00hoped to salvage his
43:01bar.
43:02We've got to start
43:03getting the cash in.
43:25We'll see you next time.
43:25more than what we Bock
43:31on the album.
