The Atlanta Braves have officially opened up some additional spending money after Jurickson Profar's PED suspension went through. Will they actually use that money to bolster the roster?
Transcript
00:02Good morning. You've made it to Friday. It is Sports Radio 92.9 The Game. We are The Morning Shift.
00:07I am Allie with Mike and Bo. Dylan is hanging out behind the glass and yeah, we're pretty certain it
00:14was only a matter of time that Jerickson Profar's appeal would be denied. Now it's officially official. Of course, Jerickson
00:20was flagged again for performance enhancing drugs. So he has been suspended. He got that positive test last year. His
00:28first offense. It was 80 games.
00:30This time around, it's 162 games. No postseason. So is there any chance he plays for the Braves? I don't
00:39want to hear about it. Yeah, I don't like it. I don't know. Like I get it. You've invested all
00:45this money. There's going to be a pocket of fans. Braves fans. Maybe it'll be the majority. I don't know.
00:49They're going to say, well, you know, you already you already, you know, lost some money to him. You might
00:53as well, you know, see if he can at least help you a little bit. But he didn't even make
00:56a good impression when he did.
00:58Oh, dude, you know, get to play. I don't think he lived up to what we thought we're bringing in.
01:03I'm solid on that. You know, like I'm so solid on having to live this saga again.
01:08And just like, I feel like I'd be holding my breath all the way through next season of like, when,
01:11when's that next test going to pop?
01:12You know, and then what I'd like, I'd have to think at this point, he's just got all together, quit
01:18training with whoever he was training with. Right.
01:20And I know he's talked about Fernando Tatis senior and doing some of those things and how it revolutionized his
01:25training regimen.
01:26Yeah, I guess it did. You know, I just, I can't imagine that he's ever suited up in a Braves
01:31uniform again.
01:32Maybe I'm wrong.
01:34I don't ever know anymore. I'm, I would never, I'll, I won't say never, but I'm good on it.
01:42Um, I'm, I'm over that dude way. And I think everybody in, in, uh, Braves country is, it just, it's,
01:49it's didn't work.
01:51I mean, didn't work. And you, he got you, man.
01:54Well, that's all you can say. He got you.
01:56What's funny is clean, clean. Think about this though. If I told you that you had it, remember we're, we're
02:06regular people.
02:07Like, I mean, obviously, you know, you played professionally in a sport. Allie and I are regular people.
02:11We're regular people.
02:11If I told any of you, if you had, well, I know that I'm just saying he actually had this
02:16opportunity.
02:16You had to cheat to get a contract for an X amount. And if you got caught, you might lose
02:25some, you know, not all though, but at least half.
02:30I'd do it. You'd do it. I think most people would do it.
02:34Yeah.
02:34So I don't know. What bothers me is he did it again. Like, dude, it's guaranteed.
02:39I think what bothers me is I know that I now have, I have an issue believing he was not
02:48doing something in the year he played in San Diego, his career year, right?
02:54So personally, if I knew my money was fully guaranteed, I'd have, I'd have, I'd have quit it right then.
03:02Yeah. But you, but you got away with it that last year in San Diego. So he thinks he's going
03:07to get away with it again.
03:07But, but why keep doing it? You've, you just made more money than you.
03:11He doesn't think he'll be caught. I mean, that's the, that's the bottom line.
03:14You do it because you don't think he'll be caught.
03:15He wasn't caught the first time.
03:16Okay. But he was caught the second time.
03:18The follow-up for this season is what I don't understand.
03:21But he probably, there's probably a different formula.
03:23Oh, I'm sure.
03:24Somebody's in the lab.
03:25Hey, I figured it out, man.
03:26There's no, no doubt. And I said the same thing when all this happened, boss.
03:31I was like, you know what? I get it. You know, I, not that I get it, not that I
03:35understand it,
03:36but I think when you look at it from his perspective, like you won, you won.
03:39It just stinks for the other people that are not doing that.
03:42That's, that's the, the biggest point of contention.
03:44This entire thing is the other roster spots.
03:46And it's the same to an extent, the same conversation we had about Charles Betty
03:50Aco. You know, if you start bringing players back from G league teams and NBA teams and allowing
03:56them roster spots in these colleges, then the person who's really being screwed out of that
04:01is the next man up because there's no room there.
04:03And that's how I feel about the jerks, bro. It's like, yeah, good for you.
04:06You cheated and you got, you know, tens of millions, but the reason I don't like it is
04:10because you screwed, screwed the next guy.
04:13Yeah. And it's the guy that was also up for a contract really in this, in this case that
04:18you're competing with. And I think whoever that all-star selection was, you got a couple
04:22of years in San Diego. Yeah. Yeah. It look, I get it the first time, but the sec, the last
04:28few times I'm just, I can understand it. I'm not saying I love it. It, but the reality is,
04:33is we have guys who, I mean, I saw the other day that are, I think it was yesterday, Barry
04:39Bonds is signing a deal with Netflix to do, be a media guy with Netflix. And someone had
04:45the perfect tweet. How does a guy who spent his entire career being a jerk to the media
04:51and cheating the system and some, not entire career on cheating the system, but we know
04:55the Giants days were something different. Get a job in the media. Now look, Barry Bonds
05:03was a Hall of Famer before he ever went to San Francisco and his head grew seven sizes.
05:09But the reality is, is how does, how's he a media, how is he going to be a part of
05:13the
05:13media? Like, how can you, how can you, how can you do that? Like the hypocrisy with some
05:18of these guys knows no bounds is, is the point of it. And you're some pro far. That's who
05:23he, I mean, that's it.
05:24Well, and we don't know the conversations that were going on behind closed doors, but
05:28I do suspect that the Braves were kind of like, let's wait and see how this appeal goes
05:32for jerks in. And let's just wait until we spend this $15 million. Well, now we have an
05:37official. So do you think they're going to use this money, utilize it somewhere else?
05:43I'll let Mr. Positive go. Cause I'm sure that y'all are going to say that I'm
05:48trudging things down. I don't have any confidence they'll do that. So I'll, I'll
05:51seed my opinion here.
05:52Not immediately. No. Maybe you want spring training breaks and there's a veteran or
05:57two that you think you could spend it on, but I don't perceive that they will do
06:03anything. I don't, I don't, I don't expect any big moves from now to open to that
06:09from a week from now for opening day. I believe that they're going to go in the
06:14season and you might see a, um, a Dallas Keuchel type signing like a month or two
06:21into the season. Maybe as Lucas Gialito signed anywhere, I don't believe he has.
06:26I believe he's still on the market. Uh, I apologize for not being on top of that,
06:30but that's a guy that could get depending on what happens. Right. Um, but now that
06:36Didier Fuentes has came out and just had a good spring. If the elder experiment goes bad,
06:43you're going to stretch that as long as you can and then maybe bring him up.
06:47But is there a bit, is there, is there, is there, I don't want to talk anything into
06:51existence, but is there an injury that comes up that makes you have to spring for
06:54a guy like that? Personally, they need to be looking at, at, um, at another, uh, DH type
07:01player, but maybe you're waiting for you. Are you, can you, can you hold out for Sean
07:05Murphy? Do you have enough time? Do you get off to a better start than you did last
07:08year? You had that time. I also think that there's a part of them that's like, you know
07:12what, let's save that money until the trade deadline comes. And then we have
07:15money to play around with. That's, I think that's the most likely scenario for
07:19me. I'm not saying that they won't spend it. I just don't think they're going to
07:22be in a hurry. And I think that he's right. I think you patch up a couple of
07:24holes along the way. Well, and he's not signed, right? Dylan, is that what you're
07:28looking up? Yeah. He's not signed, but suspected to go to the Padres. Correct. Yeah.
07:32Well, and each Wednesday night you can join Damian Day Day-Lewis for Prep Sports
