Chris Thomas debates a massive rumor from Jim Bowden regarding the Braves potentially trading for Mike Trout to bolster their outfield. How expensive would it be, and would the return be worth it?

00:00Sean Murphy is snake bitten. I jokingly asked our guest yesterday, Lindsey Crosby, about
00:07that, and that was before knowing that he's going to miss at least eight weeks. Eight
00:14more weeks a winner for Sean Murphy with a fractured, it's a thumb, right, Oren? Fractured
00:20thumb? Yeah. And that one wasn't his fault. It was a freak injury. Ay-yi-yi, this guy,
00:27this poor man. All he's trying to do is play baseball. Oh, is that middle finger, ring
00:33finger? Middle finger. Okay. All he's trying to do is play baseball, man. That's all he's
00:40trying to do. And this dude cannot stay healthy right now on a bet. So Sandy Leon is up for
00:50now. Maybe pulled the trigger on Jonah Heim a little too soon. Is he gone? He's not
00:57available. Sandy Leon hasn't been a major league quality catcher in a long time. He
01:03was with the, I think he won a world series with the Red Sox a long time ago, but he's
01:08not a good backup option. They're going to have to find a way to improve there. And then
01:13you got Braves Cubs tonight. Let's go. Two hottest teams in baseball squaring up. Good
01:20pitching matchup. We got Grant Holmes going for us. They got Colin Ray, two pretty good
01:25pitchers when they're both on their game. So we'll see what happens. And then obviously
01:30you get all the truth. It's going to be an emotional evening as well as you get all the
01:35outpouring and the tributes for both Ted Turner and Bobby Cox. So if you're on your way to the
01:42game, you know what to do, the Atlanta baseball post game show comes your way immediately following
01:52the last out win or lose. So from 10 to 11 PM, it's me and it's you on the phones,
01:59the only
02:01live local post game call in show for the Atlanta Braves. So if you're on your way to Truist right
02:08now, do not touch that dial. When you get back in your car, you call me and we talk about
02:14the game. We talk about the ceremonies for Bobby and for Ted, and we react to a really
02:21interesting litmus test series is what we'll call it for the Atlanta Braves. So I'm excited
02:29for this one. I'm excited. And of course, I'll keep you posted right here on 92.9. The game
02:34as the game progresses. First pitch is in about an hour from now. Here's my question.
02:42Again, you know how we do here on 92.9. The game to quote our friend, Carl Dukes. We don't
02:47start rumors. We just talk about them when they're out. And there is a thick with two C's might
02:55be three rumor about the Atlanta Braves. This one, this one got some heft to it. It's a big
03:04old thing. And you tell me what you think at 404-726-0929. Our buddy, Jim Bowden, the former
03:14GM, he now does work for CBS. He posited a theory. Could the Atlanta Braves, should the Atlanta
03:24Braves, try to pluck one Michael J. Trout, I don't know if that's actually his middle
03:32initial, but Mike Trout from the Angels and bring him here to Atlanta to finish his career?
03:41Whoa. Whoa, Nelly. Whoa, Mr. Bowden. Whoa. Wow. That is a heck of a proposition, sir.
03:53On many levels. Number one, we could use a permanent left fielder now. Let's not shake a
04:02stick at that. Dubon's a nice fill-in. Eli White's a nice fill-in. Yaz, it hasn't really
04:10worked. You need a full-time everyday left fielder. Dubon is best when he's playing all
04:16over the place spelling guys. You know, he's not an everyday outfielder. That's not his trick
04:21of the trade. Never has been. Mike Trout, on the other hand, Mike Trout, Michael Harris,
04:30Ronald Acuna Jr. Again, whoa. Think about that as an outfield. If healthy, that is by far
04:44leaps and bounds, miles and galaxies away, the best outfield in baseball. It's not close.
04:53But, big but. Again, thick with two C's. He's not healthy ever. And that's part of the problem.
05:03So, here we go. 404-726-0929. Should the Braves take a gamble and try to go get Mike Trout?
05:15Here's the details. He makes $37 million a year, which, when he's healthy, that is an extreme
05:23bargain. He's got four years left on his contract.
05:28If you give the Angels enough of a bag full of prospects, could you get them to eat some
05:39of it? So, he has, in total, it's about four years, $150 million left after this year.
05:49If you include J.R. Ritchie, maybe Owen Murphy, Caminiti, would they want a Dubon?
06:03Would they want? I don't know. Take your pick. I mean, who? Take your pick. But I have a feeling
06:10they'd want mostly prospects. Because that's a full, hard, stop, rebuild for the Angels.
06:21Is it worth? Now, we know the Braves usually don't do this. They don't take these kinds
06:26of swings. Again, the biggest contract they've ever given out is to Austin Riley. And, ooh,
06:33that doesn't look great right now. Although, he's playing a little bit better.
06:38Should the Braves buck the trend and go after Mike Trout? Is it worth cleaning out the farm
06:47system to go get a first ballot Hall of Fame player to help finish out his career here in
06:55Atlanta? Again, if healthy, Trout, Harris, Acuna. The upside is World Series champion.
07:04I mean, that's not hyperbole. That's what it is. The upside return on this trade is World Series champion.
