00:08I think Bobsleigh is pretty comparable to Formula 1.
00:15You have your high-budget teams.
00:16And that makes it Germany 1-2!
00:19You have your low-budget teams.
00:20I mean what?
00:21Teammates battling against each other within teams.
00:25It's exciting, it's fast.
00:27Nice looking run from Taylor Austin.
00:28But the margin for errors are really small.
00:30This is true!
00:32I'm trying to go as fast as possible.
00:35I definitely ride that line of cash or crash.
00:37I love you!
00:39Bobsleigh combines massive athleticism...
00:44...with mind, precision...
00:46...and a healthy dose of fear.
00:49It's the best sport in the world.
00:55But it's crazy expensive.
00:58Our tour keeps travelling further and further.
01:00Each athlete has about 500 kilos worth of sleds with them.
01:03Plus runners and tools and equipment.
01:06And you've got to ship that around the world.
01:09Athletes are paying for us to come on tour with them and coach them.
01:13They're all paying $45,000 this year.
01:16This season's basically bankrupt me.
01:18That's a lot of burden to put on somebody.
01:21It's not ideal.
01:22We're real short right now.
01:25The biggest problem is...
01:27...support from the government is a lot smaller than in the past.
01:30But people don't believe in the program right now.
01:32And the athletes, they're giving it their best.
01:36But we don't have everything that we need to win medals.
01:42I've never seen a sport go from so well-funded, so well-coached to what we are now.
01:51The reason why it's so sweet to win is because it's so hard.
01:55The game is excellent.
02:10The game is awesome.
02:13The game is amazing.
02:13This is awesome.
02:13Today we have a small issue with the brakes.
02:15Right there.
02:16It must be like 10 degrees back.
02:19Okay.
02:24I wish we had more resources, money, like technical support, we need spare parts, you
02:32know, we're running out from everything.
02:33My budget should be 20, 25 grand in this season.
02:37Right now, five maybe.
02:41I need this one.
02:43And like half is gone, right now, it's beginning in season, it's half is gone.
02:50I'm fixing right now, my way, MacGyver style, oh man, a little more back.
03:04Equipment is a big thing in bobsleigh, if you line up to every race with an advantage over
03:09somebody else, you're going to win more races than they do.
03:12Let's check the junkyard, not this one, someone took the part, maybe this one.
03:18It's similar, but it's not the same, no luck.
03:23Some people are building their sleds in their garage and others are building it at BMW's
03:27factory in Germany.
03:29Oh, there's a good spot.
03:33We got Marty, so you know.
03:36Yep, I think it's bad.
03:40Don't try this at home.
03:42Only professionals, yeah, you know.
03:44Man, it's almost, I need this point up, like 10 mil minimum.
03:50It's old, you know, but it's still usable.
03:57Marker, is that loud enough?
04:01Taylor Austin, bobsleigh pilot.
04:08When I was younger, I always wanted to have a career in football.
04:12So I ended up moving to Calgary and playing with the junior football team, the Calgary Colts.
04:17My dream was always playing in the NFL, playing in the CFL, playing as long as possible.
04:23There was definitely a point in my career when I realized it's not going to go too much further.
04:28Talking with my running back coach, he had actually tried bobsleigh back in the day.
04:32Taylor Austin of Calgary was a youth sports football player with the Calgary Dinos before
04:37being recruited to bobsleigh.
04:43Since then, I've had a relentless push to be better every day.
04:48Closing it again though, we've got to be clean in the bottom of the pack.
04:51He will be guaranteed a medal.
04:53He's a world-class bobsleigh driver.
04:55There's like 10 to 15 of those.
04:57Ten years ago, I have a lot of experience and reputation as a resilient fast pilot.
05:03So yeah, like you're not actually getting off the wall.
05:05Or do I like help it over more?
05:07We need this ice.
05:08I want to be like there, but like a sled like earlier.
05:11I've always, you know, looked up to the people who've been Canada 1, Canada's best pilot, Rush, and then Cripps.
05:19He was overshadowed and sort of forgotten about.
05:24He's older than I was when I retired.
05:27His window is now.
05:28Let's go!
05:29Come on, James!
05:29World Championships being in Lake Placid this year, he can win that race.
05:33He just has to have a fast enough start.
05:36So now I'm Canada 1.
05:38The competition within the team gives them a target to be Canada 1.
05:42That's their target.
05:43My target is trying to be the best in the world.
05:46Obviously, an Olympic medal is everything to a bobsleigh athlete.
05:50For me, it would be redemption.
06:16I think we're going to hold one, two before we go.
06:26All right, fellas, work's been put in.
06:28We know where our jobs are.
06:29Let's try and execute the best we can, right?
06:31Let's put it out.
06:32Let's push ourselves today, baby.
06:33Absolutely.
06:34It's not some fun.
06:36This year, Taylor's got pretty much a whole new team.
06:41It's a bit of a tryout for those guys, right?
06:43We'll see how their first races go.
06:46We're trying to be good and fast, but make sure we hit those cues.
06:50Having a track athlete doing 100 and 200-meter sprints,
06:53bobsleigh has definitely given me a second chance.
06:56This is my second year.
06:57At this time, I really have something to prove for myself.
07:00So what I did with Shmo that time with the handles,
07:02I accidentally blocked him.
07:04And then when I realized it, I just went up and I reset.
07:07I'm coming in as a rookie, so I need to learn quick.
07:10Back!
07:12There's absolutely a chance I could end up not being on the team.
07:15All I know is I need to do my best.
07:19Taylor is a big role model for everybody,
07:22and he's one of the best drivers in the world.
07:24Me coming in very new, it's a great honor to be on his team.
07:30There's definitely some weight going into this next Olympics.
07:33It's, you know, medal or bust for us.
07:46Cyrus' team came into this whole preseason as the underdogs.
07:49So these guys have something to prove, right?
07:53It's just a little visualization.
07:55This is important because then it gives me and my crew confidence that
07:59I can get down the track safely.
08:05Every time we do it, we'll picture in a perfect run.
08:13We've been training together for four months now.
08:17The hard work is paying off.
08:20We're going to try to beat Taylor.
08:23Taylor Austin from Canada and some of the athletes you know well.
08:28The funny thing is, like, three of us, me, Cyrus and Shaq,
08:33were his team pushing him on his first World Cup medal.
08:3730 hundreds back, so it's not going to be gold,
08:40but he will be in the medal.
08:42It's a guaranteed medal for Taylor Austin of Canada.
08:46Yes, boys!
08:47Wow, that's an amazing result for this team.
08:50First ever World Cup medal for all four members of this team.
08:55That proved that that team could be something.
08:58I told you, Taylor, we're going to get a medal and we got it.
09:02And we're going to keep going.
09:03Yes, sir.
09:04That was big time.
09:06We won a lot of medals.
09:08My time in that team was good, you know?
09:10We got to be World Cup medalists together.
09:14They put their faith in me to do what we needed to do,
09:17and I think we were successful.
09:21Our dynamic was a little tense, but when we have to perform,
09:26we perform because we're professionals.
09:29We finished eighth overall in the 22-23 season together.
09:33On your time with Shaq, Boca, and Cyrus,
09:36did you enjoy sliding with these guys?
09:38I'm not answering that question.
09:46This past summer, Taylor decided to go in a different direction.
09:52He took on some new breakmen.
09:56Yeah, Taylor never really told me about the change.
09:59He just went and formed his team.
10:12What's your goal, Steve?
10:1443-02.
10:16That's insane.
10:17He's been doing very well the last few push sessions, Boca.
10:21Yeah!
10:22That's what I'm talking about!
10:28It's a good day for Boca, eh?
10:30Both Shaq and Boca are amongst the best pushers on the team.
10:33They've had a really good camp,
10:34and they're definitely the top pushers in the organization.
10:4143-93.
10:42That's fast.
10:46The pilot supposedly wants the best guys to push him.
10:52They used to fight for the best guys.
10:55Four TPs, man!
10:57Four TPs!
10:59But right now, the best pilot is one of the best guys.
11:02It's hard to understand.
11:04And it's hard to not take personal.
11:07At this point, I have to take his decision very personal.
11:10And now I have to show him and the coaching staff my worth, right?
11:15This is not a nice guy sport.
11:22It's a big risk.
11:23The boys don't really know how to load yet.
11:30They're good athletes.
11:31But right now, they are just not ready.
11:34Oh, the guys forget closing zippers on the gears.
11:46Oh, you're good.
11:47Yeah.
11:48Yeah.
11:49He's definitely on the back end with a year or two left in this sport.
11:53So why wouldn't you want to win?
11:54And win now.
11:56It was faster, but it was not as good.
12:00For me to have a new team this year is definitely risky.
12:04Oh yeah, we're way out of it.
12:05And that's the same spot we were yesterday.
12:07Yeah, but at least we're in the sled sooner.
12:09Yeah.
12:09But I'm focused on me and the team I have presently.
12:13We are just taking a long time to complete the load.
12:16Like, we started loading here.
12:17If you make the wrong choice with teammates,
12:20you're not going to get the result that you want.
12:22You only have a very small window of opportunity
12:25to achieve big things in this sport.
12:27Just trust it more, execute.
12:29Every rep is just trying to be faster off the pump.
12:32Apparently, he doesn't want the fastest team yet.
12:34But it's his team, right?
12:45I think there's a big scratch in it, so that's fun.
12:48That one's a big one.
12:49Yeah, that one's big.
12:50Oh no.
12:51Shane, man.
12:52Shane, this is your looking runner.
12:54All right, let's take a look.
12:57No, man, it's nothing.
12:58It's nothing, Smarty would put it.
13:00Smarty would say it's nothing.
13:0150-50, it's okay.
13:02It's nothing, the runners.
13:03North American Cup, big deal.
13:05Yeah, North American Cup.
13:06It's fine, you win.
13:07World champs, you made shiny.
13:12See if we get a counter on him, is he doing 20?
13:15I don't think he's doing 20.
13:16I'm doing 30, man.
13:1730.
13:18Check the taste.
13:18That's what we're supposed to do.
13:20As per the Bald Slave Voodoo.
13:25Oh, good question.
13:27It's everything, man.
13:28You know, someone back in the day did it.
13:30They transferred that knowledge onto someone else.
13:33We try and replicate things that the people that have been
13:36successful do.
13:38Hopefully it works for us.
13:40So, anyway.
13:41Make sure you just get Shane sitting on his chair doing nothing.
13:44This is his usual position.
13:46This is Shane's normal position.
13:48Man, I gotta rest up.
13:51Shane had a twisted ankle there a couple days ago,
13:53warming up for the two-man race.
13:55Have you seen Shane, his brakeman?
13:56The chair behind, he's a big guy, right?
13:58You know, like, what's this guy got to do to kind of like,
14:01to, in order to keep his safety?
14:03Oh, oh, oh.
14:04He's got a little.
14:05You all right?
14:07Yeah?
14:08Ouch.
14:10Let's see.
14:11Yeah?
14:13Hey, goddammit.
14:14You're going to be okay, or do you need someone else to go in?
14:17Someone else.
14:18Someone else?
14:20Yeah, I was doing my final warm-up, and I ran into this little ice
14:23mound and rolled my ankle.
14:25So, out for this race.
14:26We'll fire Mark up, eh?
14:27Yeah, keep going, keep going.
14:29Two minutes to start for the men.
14:30Two minutes to start.
14:31You always have a substitute kind of sitting there ready to go,
14:34but they usually don't go in, so they're not necessarily actually
14:37prepped and ready to go.
14:39Don't think, just push.
14:41Track is clear for Tito.
14:42I'll send him Shane on.
14:43No, fire them!
14:44Come on!
14:45Come on, Mark!
14:46Back!
14:46Yeah!
14:47Come on, Mark!
14:48Come on, Mark!
14:49Come on, Mark!
14:50Come on, Mark!
14:51Yeah, it's either Austin and Shane, or 5-2-6 is that start.
14:58You know, football, rugby, you play through some injuries,
15:01but Shane came from track and field, track's a bit more,
15:05everything has to be perfect kind of thing.
15:07So, for him, he needs everything to be feeling like really,
15:10really good for him to really execute stuff.
15:12Oh, ho, ho!
15:14Oh, yeah.
15:15There you go.
15:17Yeah, it's definitely gotten worse.
15:19Shane's injury could be a problem for him.
15:21We don't know if he's going to be good for the race,
15:23but we'll have to wait and see.
15:31Bob today's more of a rugged sport.
15:33Sometimes you just have to tape it up and get back in the race.
15:36How am I going to get my foot in my shoe?
15:38Yeah.
15:38Oh, ho, ho!
15:41All right.
15:42I'm going to go listen to some sad music and cry in the corner.
15:50All right.
15:50Good afternoon and welcome to Whistler Sliding Center.
15:52Some action-packed racing coming up soon.
15:55Can't be too tight too, right?
15:57Because we need the back and forth.
16:01She's coming higher than the runner.
16:03I think we're going to be good today.
16:05Yeah.
16:06Pull it.
16:08That sled that we're using right now is a very old sled that we use for push training.
16:13It's overused, right?
16:15And right here, we are taping the brake handles.
16:18Because there's a big metal piece right here that is cutting my ankle.
16:23So the Icehouse sled is just basically a practice sled that we push on all summer.
16:28We bring it out when we have to.
16:30And that's the sled they gave us this year.
16:32Because we ain't good enough for a good sled yet.
16:36The best pilots, you know, the experienced pilots get the best sleds.
16:41And they have a machine set.
16:43Lift it up.
16:48Oh, man.
16:49It drives like a dream.
16:50So we're going to take the hood off.
16:54Yeah, we'll tell them to cut this part.
16:55Oh, yeah, man.
16:56We like keeping some secret right now.
16:58The other teams maybe have a better equipment or more money for the equipment.
17:03We'd rather not show it.
17:05It's like secret stuff.
17:07Yeah, we want to keep some secrets.
17:10It drives itself, man.
17:12Just touch it.
17:13It just goes.
17:13Yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:14Downtime was good.
17:17Oh, man.
17:19I almost lost a finger.
17:22All right.
17:24Let's get it.
17:27Cyrus has recently switched from being a brakeman to being a pilot.
17:30He's got a lot of really good experienced brakemen on his team.
17:35We have a really strong start.
17:37But Cyrus is still really new at driving.
17:42Go, go, go!
17:44Go, go, go!
17:59Crash, crash, crash, crash, crash, crash.
18:08Cyrus crashed a week and a half ago.
18:11Okay, I'm just going to break my...
18:16It wasn't easy.
18:17It was a rough one.
18:19It got me a burn.
18:23Yeah, I think Cyrus's crash, it kind of shook him up a little bit.
18:27Sometimes it can shake your confidence.
18:32This track is the fastest in the world, so, yeah, happens, right?
18:38Nobody wants to crash and everybody wants to get down the fastest.
18:41It is a little bit hard on the ego as well.
18:46A pilot can always get rattled from a bad crash.
18:48You got to get back to the top of the hill and try to fix the mistakes you made.
18:54One more.
18:55One more.
18:59We are pushing towards one goal.
19:04Elevate the new pilot, qualify him.
19:10It's the Olympic season, so let's go.
19:14That's what I'm talking about, baby.
19:16Yeah, today's his day.
19:36I'm going to go for it, so we'll see.
19:45I'm sure we can.
19:48The North American Cup is a proving ground before you get on to the World Cup.
19:52You have the opportunity to get points that can get you qualified for the Olympic Games.
19:57That track is clear for USA team Grady Mercer from Bob Star.
20:03Bobsleigh track.
20:04Tour men is the marquee sport in men's bobsleigh.
20:09It's the fastest, most dangerous.
20:11Go, go, go, go, go!
20:13So it's the funnest to drive as well.
20:16Yeah, we should be like 152, 153 kilometers an hour today.
20:20Top speed, 150 kilometers an hour.
20:23The track is clear for Canada team Pat Norton from Bob Star.
20:26Go, go, go, go!
20:28Go, go, go, go, go, go!
20:32Today we're going to see spicy ice.
20:35Bum sleigh in track.
20:37It was cold last night.
20:40And it's clear blue skies today, which is just a recipe for fast ice.
20:46149 top speed here for Canada's Pat Norton.
20:53A track is clear for Australia team Rhys Peters from Bob Star.
20:56When the ice is hard,
20:57It's going to get way less grip.
21:02So obviously that's a lot harder to drive.
21:14Okay, Dearborn underway with a 515.
21:16Come on, Shannon!
21:17Big run for him.
21:21So right now, it's the pre-Olympic season.
21:25The pressure's starting to mount up.
21:27You're really starting to see how you stack up against the world,
21:29and you're starting to see where the chips fall as far as your chances at the Olympics.
21:32Top speed, 150 top speed.
21:35Great effort there.
21:36Jay Dearborn across 52 to 5.
21:39That's good enough for second place there.
21:42Come on, Shane, wake up!
21:44So qualifying for the Olympics is based off of your ranking points you get
21:49from all the different circuits that you race on.
21:51The North American Cup, the Europe Cup, and the World Cup.
21:55That creates a ranking list of athletes.
21:57Ready?
21:58Yeah!
21:58Come on, Green Boyd!
21:59Come on, Shane!
22:00And there's a cutoff, basically.
22:02And if you're inside of that, you go.
22:05And if you're outside of that, you don't go.
22:07Draft is clear for Canada team Taylor Austin from Bob Star.
22:16Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go!
22:19Bob Slade in track, and here comes Canada's Taylor Austin on board with him.
22:24Shane Ort, Mark Zanet, and Johan Eskrick-Parkinson.
22:30The 6-100's in it, coming out of corner seven, now down to four.
22:34This particular sled has a way of finding speed in the bottom half of the track.
22:38We'll expect no different this time.
22:42Austin again picking up speed at the bottom.
22:44Fastest speed we've seen 151.5 has Taylor Austin across 5189, sitting comfortably on top of the board.
22:57We're going to give the best crew to the best pilot.
23:00Right now, that looks like Taylor.
23:05There's a lot of potential on Taylor's team.
23:08When it comes down to it, the coaches are going to make the teams for world championships.
23:12We're going to put our best foot forward, and everybody's going to want to be on that top sled.
23:29I've always been the underdog since I was a little guy.
23:33That's how I like to live.
23:34I like when people don't believe.
23:42My mom always liked working, and she was a single mother.
23:46I lost my father when I was three.
23:49I was making my own money when I was eight, nine years old to help her.
23:54And then I grew up on the track and field.
23:58But I started having problems, started hanging with the wrong people, and I was getting lost.
24:06But I was like, man, I promised myself that I would be an Olympian.
24:12My coach one day is like, hey, this thing called bobsled is going to have a trial.
24:15I don't know what the heck is this bobsled thing.
24:19I did the physical test, and the team's like, all right, you guys are going to Canada.
24:24And I was like, I guess I go to Canada.
24:28We just came, meet these lads, you guys are going to jump on this thing, go down this hill.
24:35But I didn't speak no English, right?
24:37Just got these lads, sit there, and then go down.
24:41And I was like, holy crap, this thing is fast for real, man.
24:50So the 2014 Olympics was coming up.
24:54Russia, Sochi, but I ended up like that.
24:57I just became a despair.
24:58That's when I took a four years break.
25:01Ready, Liam?
25:02Let's go.
25:04Workout time.
25:05Okay, one more.
25:07Push, push, push, push, push, push, push.
25:09My first kid came, Dylan, and I was watching the Olympics again.
25:14I saw the Canadian team compete.
25:17Crips team.
25:19Got the bronze medal, and when I saw him coming out of this lads screaming and crying,
25:23I cried too.
25:25And that day, it's like, I'm back to this.
25:30My roots, I take everywhere I go.
25:33I'm Brazilian, but I want to represent Canada because that was the country that showed me
25:41different life, the country that embraced me and saved me.
25:47I want to make sure my kids grow up and say my father was an Olympian, not only with Brazil,
25:54but with the country that I was born to.
25:56You guys, they will be hungry next year.
25:59They better be hungry because I'm starving.
26:01A little bit back.
26:02A little bit of work to do for a number two president.
26:05You've done six seconds off the oil.
26:07Let's go, Boca.
26:08Come on, Team Grey.
26:09Let's go.
26:10Come on, Boca.
26:15We're the underdogs, and we're just here to prove a point right now.
26:17We've got the best pushing athletes on the team.
26:19Everybody knows it.
26:21And Taylor is the best driver that we have in our program, in the country, and one of the best
26:25in
26:25the world.
26:27Do you think his push times aren't that strong?
26:29One hundred percent.
26:30His push time is probably one of the worst ones on the world level.
26:36Track is clear for Dean McCann, Cyrus Grey, Shaq-Marie Lawrence, Chris Holmsted,
26:41and De Sousa.
26:43Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go!
26:56Popslay in track, and here comes Cyrus Grey and his guys, Marie Lawrence,
27:01Holmsted, and De Sousa.
27:03Four nine four, first sub five push we've seen here.
27:08Some of the most powerful pushers that we have here in Canada.
27:13Grey already locked him up.
27:17Run here for Cyrus, high through 16, gets it down okay.
27:21Stage 148 is the top speed, 52.33 is the finish, sliding Cyrus Grey and his crew
27:26into fifth position after seven sleds down.
27:35We didn't double check the brakes.
27:37We passed up probably 120.
27:41I mean, we got the oldest sled in the field, so I'm yanking on them.
27:45I'm pulling them as hard as I can.
27:46They're not catching, and we're just praying, hoping we slow down.
27:51But we're okay, we're good, we're safe, and we're ready to go again.
27:55All right, we'll take a look at the leaderboard here while we are getting that sled back.
27:58Bit of an overshoot there for the team.
28:02In third place, Dearborn.
28:03In second place, Norton.
28:04In first place, Austin.
28:06That is after seven sleds.
28:08Let it go, let it go, Chris.
28:10What an ankle, Shane.
28:12What an ankle, baby.
28:13What are we talking about here?
28:15Today's been driving good, and even with a new crew.
28:18Yeah, they're doing good.
28:19I mean, they'll push a little faster, but yeah, getting down fast.
28:23I keep telling the Aussies that the easiest way to be faster at the bottom
28:26is just to push faster at the top.
28:28Yeah.
28:29We're two minutes to start for the men.
28:31Two minutes to start.
28:32Men's four-man, heat number two.
28:35For the second heat, you go down in reverse order from worst to first.
28:40He'll be going off last in the second heat, because he was the fastest on the first heat.
28:49Top speed for these guys, 144.
28:52Oh, four seconds ahead of the field.
28:55What a run.
28:56USA's Grady Mercer down 53-2-3.
28:58Two runs for him at 146-3-1.
29:04Track is clear for candidate team Cyrus Gray.
29:07Let's go, boys.
29:08Big push.
29:10Come on, boys.
29:12Let's go.
29:13There's advantages to being the underdog.
29:15I mean, it gives you that drive, right?
29:20Let's go, dig, dig, dig.
29:24Here comes Gray with his big guys behind him.
29:26They're 492.
29:28Nice.
29:29That's a push.
29:32It's pressure in a different way.
29:33If you're the top person, you have every advantage,
29:36then you feel this pressure of you have to win versus the underdog.
29:40You've got nothing to lose.
29:42You're always pushing up.
29:4316-3-6, past quarter three.
29:45Nine tenths.
29:46Now a full second into the lead.
29:48And you're getting closer and you're putting more pressure on those people in front of you
29:51that should be winning.
29:52That lead increasing now.
29:54One and a half seconds.
29:56Now 148 kilometers an hour.
29:58Good speed here for Cyrus Gray and his crew.
30:01One in 0.85 seconds into first place.
30:03They go.
30:09The push time was the best of the day.
30:15Fastest team on the field.
30:18Cyrus drove amazing on the second run.
30:22Cyrus crashed last week.
30:24Lost a little bit of his confidence, but he got his confidence back.
30:28He got his soul back.
30:29You gotta believe in the underdogs, man.
30:33Cyrus drove great in the second heat.
30:35First run was a little shaky, but he really laid down a good one on the second run.
30:39And that's kind of what you'd expect from somebody in his level of development.
30:43One sled to go.
30:44You got Taylor, who's a phenomenal driver.
30:47He's got a bunch of new rookies.
30:49And he's trying to show the old teammates that, hey, I don't need you guys.
30:53I mean, nobody was worried about us at the start of this.
30:56And now I think we got everybody's attention for sure.
31:00I would be worried if I was him.
31:03I mean, he should be.
31:05Come on, boys.
31:07Taylor doesn't have the best pushes right now.
31:09Those guys are young, inexperienced.
31:11They will get better.
31:12But for now, he's just relying on his driving ability.
31:15Track is clear for candidate team Taylor Austin.
31:19Shane told me something, buddy.
31:21Come on.
31:21Come on, Shane.
31:23Yeah, yeah.
31:24Come on.
31:24Come on.
31:27Come on.
31:27Fuck you.
31:29Come on.
31:29Get it.
31:30Get it.
31:31And final block in track.
31:33This is it for all the marvels.
31:35This is candidate team Taylor Austin on board.
31:38Orton, Zanet, and Ezra Parkinson.
31:42Sub-5 push in.
31:44It's 4-9-8.
31:46Fourth hands up.
31:4739-2-4 out of 11 down onto Gold Rush Trail.
31:51Now our speed here.
31:53This is Taylor Austin across 52-03.
31:56Two runs for him at 1-43-9-2.
31:59That's good enough for first place there.
32:02After all nine sleds down, third place, Bindalati.
32:05Second place, Gray.
32:06First place, Taylor Austin.
32:12I'm proud of the boys today.
32:13They stepped up.
32:14I had to get a good couple of pushes.
32:15You know, I'm happy to come away with the win.
32:26So close to be Taylor today.
32:28We've got one more time tomorrow.
32:30We're going to come with the same intensity,
32:32same work ethic, and get the job done.
32:50Today's day was a hell of a run, and the brake stretch.
33:00I gave some taps there with the hammer.
33:04I'm excited to see if it's gonna work today.
33:21The NAC race has two days of four-man racing, so you can actually get double the amount
33:25of points in a short amount of time than you would on the World Cup circuit.
33:29Man, I got a question.
33:30You think I got to rinse this out from the incident?
33:32Nah.
33:34Let's go.
33:34Yeah, yeah.
33:35All right, this is when science meets jock.
33:38So we start off with a dirty shaker cup from yesterday with a little bit of residue in
33:44it from whatever I made to clean alkaline water.
33:49Cesar, one full scoop?
33:51I got one and a half.
33:53Cesar wants to die.
33:54I don't want to die like that, but Cesar, I'm giving you a good amount.
34:01That was it.
34:02It's time to take a sip, baby.
34:05Oh.
34:07Let's go.
34:09Everybody's got us counted out, and that's what we're going for.
34:12Another upset special.
34:14You got this, man.
34:26Oh.
34:28Oh.
34:28Oh.
34:28Oh.
34:35Oh.
34:59The brakes are not perfect right now but it's better than yesterday.
35:02we fixed it let's see how it's gonna be this is Canada's Taylor Austin we sit in
35:19the second place right now just only 10 hundreds behind Taylor's team we're
35:24going for top spot
35:27thank you the track is clear for Canada team Cyrus gray off-start
35:35come on baby wake up oh boys let's see it
35:58push bar is out push bar is out stand back so I think there's a push bar malfunction so like
36:09the pilot
36:09first part didn't actually lock in like you punch that lever and it's supposed to drop
36:15you don't see that every day hopefully we get that slid back into the sled six 100s in front
36:31hold that start hold that start
36:41oh
36:41oh
36:41oh
36:54Come on, man.
36:59Come on, man.
37:14He's had to bice you up, bice you up, bice you up, bice you up, bice, stop, stop, stop,
37:20stop, stop, stop, stop.
37:21You need to see the doctor now.
37:22Oh, I don't need doctor, man.
37:23I'm good.
37:24You didn't work.
37:25You tried.
37:26I saw you tried.
37:28You tried.
37:29You tried.
37:29Stop this team.
37:30OK.
37:30OK.
37:38OK.
37:38This is probably going to be your act, eh?
37:40You've got a size before?
37:41Yeah.
37:42Oh, man.
37:43Oh, no.
37:44Where's that?
37:45Yeah, that's 13.
37:49Shoot.
37:59We thought you had it close.
38:01He's driving.
38:02It's a corner of the floor, bro.
38:03I know.
38:03I'm driving with one hand.
38:06Can you believe in it?
38:08With the barrel.
38:09Yeah.
38:11Yeah.
38:11With that one.
38:12We walked down.
38:14Did anyone notice any sort of aase in the body?
38:16I think we should talk about some hands.
38:18Hard, hard, hard.
38:20OK.
38:32Taylor Austin, Cape Canada, having a blinder of a series here
38:36for North America's Cup.
38:38Good speed at 150 kilometers an hour.
38:41What do you expect?
38:42And there it is.
38:435189 is the finish.
38:44Taylor Austin into the number one spot with the 14383.
38:49And with that, it includes North America's Cup ball slay racing.
38:53What are you talking about, dude?
38:55Double gold.
38:56What are you saying?
38:57What ankle?
38:57What ankle?
38:58What ankle?
38:59What ankle?
39:03OneStudio.
39:03That's the only part that jeezes.
39:04You know, these guys are celebrating.
39:07And breaking the cement.
39:08Yeah.
39:09You know, the good cement was common accord.
39:14That's all right?
39:14Yeah.
39:15It's all right.
39:16It's all good.
39:16I know you're not so happy.
39:21Well, you know, we did what we could.
39:25You did so well, man.
39:29You know, when I look back on the athletes that have achieved Olympic medals,
39:33they all have some type of massive disappointment in their career
39:38that lit a fire under them to do that extra next thing
39:42that takes them from being that top six or top eight person
39:45to standing on top of the podium.
39:50And in first place, representing Canada,
39:54Taylor Austin, Shane Ort, Mark Zenit.
40:15I've been sliding for 12, 13 years already.
40:18I'll be 36th at the next Olympics, so that's it for me.
40:22Woo!
40:24Nice!
40:27I'm excited to see what I can do in the next two years,
40:29what the team around me can bring.
40:31It tastes better after four wins.
40:33Oh, yeah.
40:34Clean it up.
40:35Taste of victory.
40:35The guys that are with me right now, you know,
40:37I'd love to see them racing me at the World Championships.
40:40We'll have to see how these guys do through the rest of the year.
40:42Even though there's some other guys that are pushing faster straight off the top,
40:45I think we showed that we're in range of them.
40:50Man, if it wasn't the pilot bar today,
40:52we would definitely make some noise.
40:54I mean, this team did a great job going down with that thing of opening.
40:56So close, so close to the field, so close.
40:59These guys stay hungry, real good.
41:02As a younger driver or a newer driver,
41:04your goal is to knock off the top sleds,
41:07to take their spot.
41:08That's the name of the game, right?
41:09If you want to move up to the World Cup,
41:11you've got to beat a World Cup sled.
41:13We're within 500, so a guy's been pushing together for months, years even.
41:17Yeah.
41:17Man, I ain't worried about that.
41:19It is a high-performance sport,
41:20and at the end of the day,
41:21the best people are going to race with me.
41:23I don't have a crystal ball.
41:25Injuries could happen.
41:26People could come up.
41:27People could go down.
41:28Well, let's have to see.
41:30Canada!
41:31Team on three, team on me.
41:32One, two, three, team!
41:34The team is very united right now.
41:36We're working hard,
41:38but Taylor is the best pilot on the Canadian system.
41:42And being so close to him,
41:45just a little bit frustrated, you know?
41:47We just don't have the equipment that will help us
41:50to achieve the highest place in the podium yet.
41:55We're on the dogs, man.
41:56We don't stop until we get it.
41:59If you don't beat your own teammates,
42:02you don't get to go compete against the rest of the world
42:04at the highest level.
42:06But eventually, you have to work with your opponents
42:09on your own team to push each other
42:11and work together so that you can beat the rest of the world.
42:30Training, working, and being in a team
42:32is very important to me.
42:36Because in the end of the day,
42:37I want to be in the Olympics.
42:42I push hard every moment I'm on that sled.
42:45I have no idea how to push less than 120%.
42:50You're up, Boca!
42:53Man, I just want to be the best.
42:57I said to myself in the beginning,
42:59when I jump on the Canadian team,
43:01I say, I will be one of the best on this team,
43:04and I'll prove to you guys I will be.
43:27I'll be the best on this team.
43:37Multiple fractures, right femur, suspected spinal trauma.
43:41ETA, two minutes.
43:42Go to the hallway, coming through.
43:43It's J, Doc.
43:44Can you hear me?
43:48My name's Dr. J.
43:49Spines are dropping.
43:50Two, one.
43:52No!
43:53No!
