00:00Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and U.S. President Donald Trump have wrapped up their high-stakes summit in Washington.
00:07This is their second meeting since last October, and it comes at the tense time for the alliance,
00:13as Takaichi looks to reassure the White House after Japan declined to join Trump's call to protect the Strait of
00:20Hormuz.
00:21But things took a turn during the press conference.
00:24When asked why the U.S. failed to warn its allies before striking Iran, Trump drew a parallel to Japan's
00:32attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
00:36Well, one thing you don't want to signal too much, you know, when we go in, we went in very
00:41hard,
00:42and we didn't tell anybody about it because we wanted surprise.
00:46Who knows better about surprise than Japan?
00:50Okay, why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor?
00:56Takaichi is among only a handful of leaders to visit the White House since the U.S. and Israel's war
01:01against Iran began on February 28.
01:04And before sitting down with Trump, the Prime Minister joined leaders from five European nations in a joint statement,
01:11calling on Tehran to halt attacks on the Strait of Hormuz.
01:14The statement added that the group would consider appropriate efforts to help reopen the strait.
01:19However, it remains unclear what that would actually look like in practice.
